Free energy?

Some love the kick they get from energy drinks, but Red Bull, Amp and the others aren’t risk-free

Detroit Free Press

I

t’s been a grind all day and now it’s bedtime — but you’ve got more work to do or a long drive ahead. Should you gulp an energy drink? “Gulp” is the operative word, health experts say. Ounce for ounce, most energy drinks may be no worse for health than strong coffee. But while people sip a coffee or tea, those who choose energy drinks consume them like soda pop. And look at the packaging: Monster Energy, for example, comes in a 16-ounce can, which is technically two servings’ worth of caffeine, and youth researchers say many teens will drink the whole thing.

Energy drinks are the fastest-growing segment of the beverage industry, with sales rising about 9 percent by volume in 2010 and growing at the same pace this year, according to John Sicher, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest. “I’m going to be on a bus to Lansing (Mich.) and I’ll miss my afternoon coffee, so I’ll have one of these,” says Dennis Wixon, 27, of Sterling Heights, Mich., while buying two bottles of 5-Hour Energy at a gas station in Warren, Mich. Others turn to them because coffee isn’t enough. “This might be strange to say, but caffeine doesn’t give me that kick anymore — it’s almost a necessity,” says Oakland University junior Kaitlyn Chornoby. Chornoby, 20, of Shelby Township,

Mich., said she drinks some coffee and Mountain Dew, but usually it’s an AMP: Focus or Monster energy drink. Researchers say caffeine abuse is widespread among adolescents and college students, who use energy drinks to overcome a lack of sleep or to stay up cramming for exams. Turn to Energy on P.5

Energy drinks have other ingredients with unproven effects, such as high doses of vitamins and other nutrients, tied to label claims of increased concentration and an energy kick. “The other stimulants in these drinks are not as well understood as caffeine, and the data is mixed” about whether they boost alertness, says Joe Carlson, a Michigan State University youth nutrition researcher. Nutrition experts say healthy adults who otherwise would drink coffee or tea can switch to energy drinks as long as they don’t overindulge. “It’s just a beverage that can replace your cup of coffee in the morning,” says science policy chief Maureen Storey at the trade group American Beverage Association. But you’d be better off with coffee or tea, says David Schardt, senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a research group begun by Ralph Nader. “If you need to stay alert and, for some reason, don’t want coffee, an energy drink will do the trick. If you’re driving, it might even save your life,” Schardt says. But unless energy drinks are labeled low-calorie, “they’re sugary, caloric drinks, and that can add up” to weight gains, he says. Coffee and tea have no calories until you add sugar and milk or cream. Who should avoid energy drinks? Energy drinks are being increasingly abused, especially by young people hooked on caffeine, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The organization, which began tracking energy drink incidents this year, received 340 reports of adverse health effects caused by the drinks’ high caffeine levels. People with high blood pressure or heart disease also should beware of caf-

In 2007 Greeley had 38 malignant melanoma cases, in 2008 it had 45 and in 2009 it had 64, Fritz said. “Start at a young age,” Fritz said. “Skin is an organ of your body just like your heart, and you need to take care of it.” Fritz encourages parents to equip kids with hats, sunscreen and clothes that cover the skin. These healthy habits stuck with the girls sun tanning near the University of Northern Colorado campus. “Mom made us wear sunscreen when I was little,” Higel said. Since the girls always protect themselves, sun damage

is never really a concern for them. “I think about it, but I just don’t worry about it,” Roth said. Although these particular sunbathers wore sunscreen, they said many of their friends aren’t as cautious. “They try to get as tan as they can,” Roth said. Fritz said this attitude of invincibility is what can lead to young people getting unhealthy sunburns. Reckless attitudes combined with the outdoor spirit and number of summer days in Colorado has made the state one of the top three skin cancer states in the country, Fritz said. In order to reverse this increase of cases, NCMC has tried to spread knowledge about skin cancer — most specifically teaching the public how to recognize the symptoms. Fritz encourages getting naked. “We teach people what to look for and to check their skin at least two times a year,” Fritz said. As opposed to a regular mole, melanoma has erratic ratty edges. Melanoma also will not be evenly colored. Nonworrisome moles will be round and one color, she said. Because melanoma occurs during a long period of time, Fritz said the rising statistic might take a while to drop. “Common sense is what we really try to teach,” Fritz said. “When in doubt, check it out.”

»»Sun safety How to stay safe from the sun: » Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day. » Wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen and when involved with water sports, reapply it more often. » Cover up with long sleeves and pants when in the sun and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Also wear tightly woven clothing to keep the sun out. » Examine your body for skin changes at least twice a year.
