Annual Report from Your Garden Dick Rankin, Chairman of the Board and Susan Garot, Executive Director

From the Chairman & Executive Director

Your Green Bay Botanical Garden has completed another outstanding year THANKS to the multiple contributions made to enhance the Garden by our many volunteers, outstanding staff and the over 3,000 active members. Early in the Garden’s history the initial core of volunteers celebrated when the goal of 80 members was reached – how proud they must be with the quality of today’s Garden and our growing membership. Your membership, coupled with the support of sponsors, has enabled the Garden to be open for free attendance on a number of occasions throughout the year, ensuring the entire community has access to this community treasure: • Summer Wednesday evenings feature free admission from 4 – 8 pm and features a wonderful opportunity for families with children to learn at our Discovery Station • WPS Garden of Lights hosted nearly 500 families with children that would otherwise not have been able to enjoy this holiday light show • Hundreds of at-risk school children are able to come free to the Garden’s plant educational programs • Our Fall Family Art Festival features family games, entertainment, food and fun, mixed with an art show and drew over 4,000 attendees last year • And many other community outreach endeavors Membership and donor support also enables: • Continued growth and expansion of our plant collections and labeling program • Adult, youth and family programming that is affordable, providing members and others the opportunity to learn from experts • Many other member benefits, including free concerts, tours, and other amenities With our fiscal year that ended April 30, 2015, we achieved a number of milestones: • Grew our visitors to over 125,000, a new record • Grew our membership – we peaked at 3,271, a new record • Grew our school tours – 4,329 students came through the Garden, another new record • Grew our financial sustainability by creating a one month reserve account to smooth out the ups and downs of our economic cycle • Grew our endowment through the creation of an Education Endowment, thanks to a few of our donors, to ensure our education programming has the needed funds for the future • Grew our garden by expanding the Arendt Conifer Garden, which now completes the area surrounding the Mabel Thome Patio • Leadership succession plans were developed for our volunteer and professional leadership • With the assistance of St. Norbert College, conducted an economic impact analysis of the Garden, learning we have a nearly $6 million annual impact on Northeast Wisconsin

Obviously, any public endeavor is only as good as the members, the volunteers and the staff that are involved. Your Garden continues to be blessed with over 400 fantastic, dedicated volunteers and groups who donated over 11,000 hours of weeding, planting, mulching, parking, hosting events and much, much more during the 2014-15 fiscal year. To ALL of our volunteers, the board, the staff and the members of the Garden are most THANKFUL for your multiple contributions. You are each difference-maker contributors. Dick Rankin, Chairman of the Board

Susan Garot Executive Director

Del Moral-Niles & Van Drisse Join the Board The Garden’s board appointed and approved Chris Del Moral-Niles, Chief Financial Officer of Associated Banc-Corp, and Kristin Van Drisse, Vice President Wealth Advisor of BMO Private Bank, to fulfill unexpired terms of Nancy Byczek and Fred Parish. Both Byczek and Parish resigned mid-term due to changes in their workplace job duties. We are excited to have them and both bring a wealth of financial expertise as well as marketing and public relations skills. In addition, two other board members will be retiring from the board after nine years of service: Michael Raymaker and John Oates. Raymaker will stay on as past chair and Oates promises to stay involved at the committee level.

9

years of service John Oates

Michael Raymaker

Board nominees complete a board nomination form, which is reviewed by the Governance Committee before being presented to the membership for election at the annual meeting. We are currently looking for Board members who have skills in fund-raising and marketing.

If you’re interested in learning more about board service, contact Executive Director, Susan Garot, at sgarot@gbbg.org or Chair of the Governance Committee, Carol Faltynski, at cfaltynski@smet.com.

You can renew a variety of ways: in person, by mail, online at www.gbbg.org, by phone at (920) 490-9457 or toll free at (877) 355-4224. Stumpf Belvedere Ornament

The latest Garden wooden ornament, “The Stumpf Belvedere”, has arrived in the WPS Trellis Gift Shop! This ornament is made in Wisconsin from wood harvested from Timber Green Woods of Spring Green. Their trees are harvested only when they have matured. With careful selection, as soon as one tree is cut, another is ready to take its place in the forest canopy. Because their forest is well managed, it not only grows with more vigor, but produces a higher quality of wood. We’re excited to support a local business that cares so much for the natural beauty we have in Wisconsin. Stop in on your next visit to the Garden!

Bulbilicious Spring Display Planting

Thursday, October 15 & Saturday, October 17 Time to be determined, weather permitting. Each year we plant more than 50,000 bulbs in the Garden that make spring even more beautiful. Volunteers not only partake in the planting, but also see how their hard work pays off in spring when the Garden is overflowing with thousands and thousands of blooms. Imagine how rewarding it will be seeing all the beautiful flowers that were planted!

Autumn at Your Garden AUTUMN ORIGINALS Fall is one of my favorite times of the year to visit Green Bay Botanical Garden. During the fall season, a number of stunning and original blooms can be found along garden pathways. Be sure to explore the Garden this fall and enjoy the spectacle of the season as flowers and foliage burst into a colorful display. Here are some of the more unusual plants you’ll discover during your fall visit. Tamarack A variety of tamaracks and larches can be found throughout the Garden, glowing brilliant gold during mid to late October and beyond. New England Aster The classic native aster features daisy-like blooms in purple and yellow, New England aster grows wild in many areas of the Garden. Hardy Hibiscus or Rose Mallow With dramatic, explosive blooms in shades of pink, red and white, hardy hibiscus bloom in the Cottage Garden, Kress Oval Garden and Partnership Garden. Hydrangea Many hydrangeas peak during fall with spectacular blooms that adorn mid sized shrubs. Many can be found in the King Shade Garden, as well as other areas. Conifers In a wonderful array of colors, textures, shapes and sizes, conifers continue their year round display in fall where they provide a stunning backdrop for blooming fall flowers and changing leaves. Japanese Anemone Japanese anemones or windflowers are classic fall bloomers in silvery pink, white and rose. Find them in many locations at the Garden. Autumn Crocus Stunning fall blooming crocus adorn the Larsen Orchard area with their flamboyant, ruffly pink blooms. Roses One of the longest blooming flowers in the Garden, many varieties of roses continue their show well into fall and early winter. Ornamental Grasses With breathtaking plumes and fiery colors, the many varieties of ornamental grasses are at their best during fall. You’ll find many varieties scattered throughout all areas of the Garden. Fireworks Goldenrod This stunning and spectacular variety of goldenrod features long, narrow plumes that may reach a foot in length, splayed out like fireworks from plants that may reach 4 to 5 feet tall.

Rob Zimmer, Garden & Nature Writer Rose Turtlehead Growing in moist, shady areas, rose turtlehead features unusual pink, tubular blooms that draw migrating hummingbirds and monarchs on their journey south. This plant blooms profusely in the King Shade Garden during fall. Lobelia Cardinal flower and great blue lobelia, along with many garden hybrids, bloom during fall in moist, shady areas or open woodlands. You’ll find them in bloom in the King Shade Garden and elsewhere. Fall Garden Charm Among the best fall bloomers are the many varieties of annuals that continue their spectacular show well after Labor Day. Zinnias, cosmos, dahlias, marigolds, nasturtiums, morning glories and more continue their spectacular display in the Cottage Garden and the Nielsen Children’s Garden until the first hard freeze.
