2015 - 2016 Annual Dick Rankin, Chairman of the Board
A Message from the Chairman The Garden’s Fiscal Year, which ended April 30, 2016, was again a banner year thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, members and volunteers. We would like to thank each of our generous donors who helped us exceed our Annual Fund goal this year. Looking forward, our goal is to raise $5 million with the launch of the Perennial Performance Capital Campaign for a Grand Garden and Amphitheater. Volunteers continue to make fantastic contributions to the overall quality of the Garden and all events. The Garden could not be the community haven it has become without the tremendous contributions of time and talent of our MANY volunteers. Staffing continues to be another STRENGTH of the Garden. We are very grateful to have such talented staff at every level, led by our outstanding Executive Director, Susan Garot. Indeed, the ’15-’16 year has been wonderful for our Garden in every way. Our thanks to the many volunteers, members, generous donors and staff. Each of YOU are difference makers for YOUR Green Bay Botanical Garden. The following pages demonstrate the ways in which we have grown and our accomplishments as a community.

Buzzing about Local Artists
James and Karen Van Rossum are bestselling local artists featured in the WPS Trellis Gift Shop. They use only reclaimed silverware to make dragonflies, butterflies, bumble bees and several different flowers. Inspiration for the silverware art comes from a gift Karen received, made from James’ grandmother’s silverware. That piece of art radiates with personal memories and quickly found a prominent place in their garden. James, a welder by trade, decided to “upcycle” silverware found at many thrift stores into pieces of art so others can also experience those memories in a whimsical kind of way. Stop by to see their unique pieces!

Spa Herbs
Did you know that you can grow your own ingredients for spa treatments? There are a variety of different herbs that can be grown and harvested to use as your very own DIY spa treatment in the comfort of your own home. These herbs are used for their simplicity and versatility—from face masks and foot soaks to hair rinses. Benefits of Spa Herbs Each spa herb has its own benefit but can be mixed with other herbs as desired. Spa herbs are commonly used for relaxation, invigoration and energization. When combined with the right ingredients, they can also be good for moisturizing your hair and skin. Grow Spa Herbs Indoors As winter approaches, or if you live in an apartment with no garden space, here are some tips for growing spa herbs indoors: • Give plants plenty of sunlight with direct or supplemental light • Don’t over water plants as it could invite plant diseases • Don’t let plants dry out Herbs Commonly Used in Spa Treatments Plants that can be grown indoors: • Brassica hirta, mustard • Calendula officinalis, calendula • Chamaemelum nobile, chamomile • Cymbopogon citratus, lemongrass • Eucalyptus radiate, eucalyptus • Lavandula angustifolia, lavender • Melissa officinalis, lemon balm • Mentha spp., mint • Nepeta cataria, catnip • Rosmarinus officinalis, rosemary • Salvia officinalis, sage
Mint Botanical Name: Mentha spp. Common Name: Mint Bloom Time: Depends on type Life Cycle: Perennial Light: Full Sun Size: Varies on cultivar What makes it a good spa herb? The leaves of the mint plant can be used for a variety of spa treatments such as foot rubs and foot soaks. It is versatile and can also be used in herbal cocktails, cooking and teas. Mint is very vigorous and easy to grow indoors and outdoors so it is perfect for your garden or apartment. Check out the chocolate mint and other herbs in our Spa Garden and visit www.GBBG.org/diy-gardening for a complete listing of herbs in our Spa Garden and more DIY tips and tricks!
Fan Photos
GBBG’s social media fans share photos of their incredible adventures at the Garden year-round. Here are some of our favorites from summer 2016. Post your photos of the Garden on social media with the hashtag #GreenBayBotanicalGarden and they may end up in our next newsletter! sydneyguc
Plants that may not fruit or grow well indoors: • Avena sativa, oats • Cucumis sativus, cucumbers • Fragaria ananassa, garden strawberry • Fragaria vesca, alpine strawberry
acissej522
amy_gaerthofner
acissej522
Plants that should be grown outside: • Hamamelis virginiana, witch hazel • Rosa spp., roses Keep in mind that most herbs prefer to grow outdoors in full sun, and may not grow as well indoors, which is why proper lighting is key. This list of plants is just a suggestion of what may grow well indoors, but feel free to experiment and see what works for you. Everyone’s green thumb is different and what works for one person might not work for another. And if you don’t want to try your hand at growing your herbs indoors, you can always dry them out for use during the winter. They might not be as potent but they will still do the trick!
