20 Years of Growth Susan Garot, Executive Director and Lee Somerville, Author & Master Gardener
“Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” – James Cash Penney (founder of J.C. Penney, Inc.)
Twentieth Anniversary So many forces are converging on the Garden this 20th anniversary year to ensure greater community relevance and sustainability. First, the board has adopted the following operational goals for the 2016-17 fiscal year (beginning May 1) to continue moving the Garden forward: • We are committed to growing visitation and membership by retaining and developing our staff and volunteers. We have a passion for guest service and it shows! Our excellence in visitor services has gained the Garden status with Trip Advisor users – we are consistently in the top 5 frequented attractions in the Green Bay area and have earned a Certificate of Excellence with an average rating of 4.5/5. • We are committed to finding ways to grow the endowment and ensure the Garden’s future sustainability. • We are expanding our educational programming beyond the Garden’s border through outreach efforts to schools and other youth-serving organizations. • We are continuing to enhance our plant collections status through participation with national trialing efforts for greater plant sustainability and by applying to the American Public Gardens Association Plant Collections Network for our magnolia collection. We have already achieved national recognition for our hosta, daylily and conifer collections. • We have committed to bringing a nationally touring garden sculpture exhibit to Wisconsin with Nature Connects® – made with Lego® bricks – in 2018. • Finally, we are embarking on the next development phase of the Garden with our Perennial Performance Campaign for a Grand Garden & Amphitheater.
The second force helping to bring new growth to the Garden is the community. As we are out talking about the Grand Garden to dozens of community groups, the enthusiasm and support we are garnering is so energizing. We held a community stakeholder workshop in January and a visioning 2 session in February, with over 100 folks from throughout the region in attendance. Schools, city and county government, non-profits, private businesses and others came together to help dream about the programming and provide direction on design to our architects, Somerville, Inc. and Smith Group/JJR. The plans are coming together and the Perennial Performance Campaign, led by Kathy and Doug Hartman, will kick off in June with a concert in the pre-Grand Garden space. See page 3 for details. Another force helping to grow the Garden has been our Garden Clubs: Lady Bug Garden Club, Garden Club Des Peres, Bay Area Daylily Buds (B.A.D. Buds), Gardeners Club of Green Bay, Green and Gold Hosta Society, N.E.W. Orchid Society, N.E.W. Rose Society and Northern Gardeners. These clubs were all instrumental in helping establish the Garden and each year provide grants for various projects, with the 2015 project helping to fund the history book: A Place For Everyone: The History of Green Bay Botanical Garden by Lee Somerville. Lee invested hundreds of hours interviewing dozens of volunteers, past and current employees, board members and others to produce this amazing book. Staff member Lori Vandenberg has taken her design skills to new levels by pulling the print and photos together to create a truly stunning book to sit on your coffee table or in your lobby waiting area. While helping to proof the book, especially Chapter 4, I fell in LOVE with our Garden all over again! You will too. It is an amazing story of hard work and perseverance and the results speak loudly with every turn of the page. Above is an excerpt from the book. Call 920.490.9457 to order your book today for just $24.95 plus tax, with a 10% discount for members. For more information on the Garden’s operating goals, the Grand Garden or A Place for Everyone, contact Susan Garot, Executive Director, at 920.491.3691 ext. 102 or sgarot@gbbg.org.

Garden Project Planner Plants to Protect Your Privacy
Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture
Privacy. We all want it sometimes and some of us want it all the time! Whether you are building a patio or planting along your lot line, you might find the need to install some screening plants in your yard this summer. At the Garden, we will be planting conifers along our new parking lot to screen off many of our not so beautiful behind the scenes items such as greenhouses, mulch piles and other maintenance areas that are better not heard or seen! In preparation, this winter we chose a selection of hedging plants to use as a screen and wanted to share a couple selections that might be useful to others working on similar projects. Many of these plants we heard about through Johnson’s Nursery Plant Talk articles written by Michael Yanny. Most of the plants were selected by Michael or one of his mentors, Herbert Trautman, here in Wisconsin. Take a look at the Plant Talk articles archived in the education section of Johnson’s Nursery’s website at www.johnsonnursery.com for further information on these and other screen-worthy trees and shrubs. Happy planting!
Featured Screen Plants Name: Star Power™ juniper, Juniperus x ‘J.N. Select Blue’ Exposure: Full sun Zone: 3 Height and Spread: 17’ by 7-9’ Characteristics: Blue-green foliage color, star-like juvenile foliage, dense growth requires little to no shearing, fast growing, deer resistant. Other Cultivars to Look For: Emerald Feather™ has fresh, bright green color and is fast growing; Trautman has a narrow upright habit and maintains its foliage color throughout winter.
Name: Trautman arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis ‘Trautman’ Exposure: Full sun Zone: 3 Height and Spread: 20-25’ by 10-15’ Characteristics: Somewhat glossy foliage, dense growth especially compared to Techny, tolerant of dry fall and winters and therefore less prone to drying out compared to other more commonly used cultivars. Other Cultivars to Look For: Patriot™ is an upright, columnar grower with good green winter color; Technito® is a dwarf form of Techny that is useful for smaller yards and also makes a nice specimen plant.
Garden Tidbits Puzzles with a Garden View
WPS Trellis Gift Shop has custom-made jigsaw puzzles featuring many distinct features found throughout the Garden. You will find the Cora Vanderperren English Cottage Garden featuring the Meredith B. Rose Cottage, the Stumpf Belvedere, the Schierl Wellhouse and the King Shade Garden.

Garden Tidbits Thank You, Volunteers
Our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of Green Bay Botanical Garden. Without them, we could not provide quality programs and services, exceptional special events or a beautifully-maintained Garden. In 2015, the following volunteers donated between 25-304 hours of their time for a total of over 7,584 hours. By generously donating their time to the Garden, we saved more than $170,000 in staff time!
