Partners & Volunteers We are excited to recognize the following corporation and individuals as our 2016 Corporate Partner and Volunteers of the Year Corporate Partner of the Year Mayflower Greenhouse’s

support of the Garden began back in 2002. They’ve sponsored Garden Walk, Garden Fair and Tastebud, supported the Children’s Gardening program, and provided various plant materials throughout the years.

They also began sponsoring the Spring Thaw Lecture in 2004, when Jan Wos was establishing his niche gardening business in the greater Green Bay community. Since Jan’s passing, John Kress, Chris Beno and the team have continued their support as the sponsor of the Garden’s Annual Spring Thaw Lecture.

Development Volunteer of the Year Doug Hartman has been the naturalist of

his family, but proves it’s never too late to learn something new and learn it from one’s spouse. Last year’s Development Volunteer of the Year, Kathy Hartman, has been teaching Doug the skills needed to successfully co-chair the Perennial Performance Campaign to raise $5 million for the Grand Garden.

Doug’s “ask” may be soft, but there’s no doubt he’s effective. Under his leadership, the Garden is nearing its goal for raising the resources needed to build and maintain this wonderful new project, ensuring the Garden remains a vibrant educational and botanical resource for years to come.

Guest Services Volunteer of the Year Sandy Pineau is an excellent example of one of

our many exemplary volunteers. She is passionate about the Garden, promoting membership for 20 days and selling 23 memberships. She was the winner of our 2016 visitor services contest; the other winners are the new members who now have the opportunity to enjoy the Garden and all it has to offer. Sandy is extremely punctual, professional and friendly to all. She is always willing to assist staff as needed and you will find her at the front desk at least once every week and volunteering at many Garden events.

Facilities Volunteer of the Year Joe Hooyman has been chief painter, stainer

and sealer at the Garden since he started with us in 2007. He has climbed many ladders to ensure that every inch of wall or arbor is given equal coverage and care. Starting with the prep work of scraping, sanding and puttying, adding primer and paint or sealer, once we set Joe at a project, we know that he will follow it through to completion. Joe puts down his brush, but not his ladder, to help with setup of WPS Garden of Lights each fall as well.

Horticulture Volunteers of the Year Carolyn Haglund will do any job that is asked

of her, she is always here rain or shine. She is one tough lady; always surprising us with how strong she is. She doesn’t let a little scratch get in her way from getting a job done (she has even been known to refuse Band-Aids). Her Hummingbird Muffins are a hit with the other Tuesday volunteers. She may be one of the quieter volunteers, but when you get her talking, she is quite the hoot! She is one of the sweetest and kindest ladies we know!

John and Cathy Jacobs are very wellrounded volunteers, helping with both gardening tasks and WPS Garden of Lights set up. On Wednesdays, Cathy is part of a trio of ladies that bring in a bit of mischief to happily complete any job, even weeding the lawn, without any complaints. John works with the Wednesday guys on projects like pruning, transplanting and getting into their own mischief. They are both kind-hearted and always willing to help out where needed.

The beautiful love they have for each other is the same love that they show to everyone at the Garden.

Snowshoes are available to use on site and are free with Garden admission. We have sizes suitable for kids (6 years and older) and adults, as well as marked paths in the Garden.

Get out and enjoy the snow at the Garden this year! Not available during WPS Garden of Lights or Winter Family Festival.

Partners & Volunteers Education Volunteers of the Year Sandy Johnson is one of our garden docents

and ambassadors, but as a book lover, she is also very dedicated to preserving and maintaining the Garden’s book collections. She has been helping “behind the scenes” with the library from the time it first moved into our Horticultural Resource Center and has spent more than 100 hours this year keeping it organized and prepping used book sales. If asked to find a particular book, she could easily pick it from the shelves as her recall of the collection is more reliable than our computer database!

Rawson and Mary Price have been

engaged with and supported the Garden since opening our doors in 1996. In spite of Rawson’s need to retire from leading our Garden tours as a docent, he and Mary have greatly enhanced our docent-led tours by donating the “TourGuide Solution” – speaking and listening devices – to our tour program. With their support, docent-led tours have been improved by allowing visitors to listen, wander and truly discover the wonder, joy and beauty of the Garden. As one member of a recent tour said, “This is the greatest enhancement to a guided tour I’ve ever experienced.”

Special Events Volunteers of the Year Mary Borley has been volunteering with the

Garden since 2010. She understands how Garden events run, working with the public and recruiting other volunteers from her place of work at Associated Bank. Mary knows the ins and outs of Garden events, shows up early, stays late and always brings a can-do attitude. She keeps things moving, is organized and welcoming to new volunteers. Mary can always be relied upon to do any role, especially concessions and running a register! She brings a bright beaming smile and burst of energy to every event.

Pam Charlier is filled with high energy and

laughter. She started volunteering in 2014, and we have gotten to know Pam and her family, who have become part of our Garden family. Pam’s knowledge of catering, bartending and event set-up has been extremely helpful for us over these last few years.

Pam is a wonderful person and friend who can put a smile on anyone’s face. We could not imagine any Garden event without Pam involved, and we are so grateful to have her as part of the team.

Shirley Garthwaite has been volunteering for

the Garden for a year and a half. In 2016 alone, she has already put in almost 150 hours! Shirley is truly part of the Garden family and brings her best customer service smile wherever she goes. Shirley gave a lot of her time during the holiday season to help the Garden reach our record-setting year for WPS Garden of Lights. She was always welcoming to new volunteers and made all new Garden staff feel much better when working their first few nights in concessions. We are so grateful and impressed with how she works with such efficiency.

Within the pack are short lessons accompanied by hands-on activities that will introduce you to concepts of winter ecology and help you explore the wildlife and features of the winter garden more closely.

S.E.E.D. Packs are available during our regular business hours and are free with Garden admission. Completing the activities of the Winter Discovery Pack together will help develop an understanding of and appreciation for the natural world and enhance family bonds.

Walking through WPS Garden of Lights is a holiday tradition for thousands. WPS Garden of Lights Volunteers Needed

What better way to get into the holiday spirit than by volunteering for WPS Garden of Lights? We need your help to fill over 900 volunteer shifts over the course of the event. Volunteering is fun, and best of all, volunteers receive FREE admission to enjoy the beauty of the Garden the night of their shift. This is a great opportunity for families and friends to volunteer together, corporate groups to support their community or for students to fulfill required service hours.

Adult & Family Education

Throughout the winter, the Garden offers programs for adults, youth and families. These programs include:

W! Camp GBBG: Winter Day Camp NECamp doesn’t only happen in summer; winter means snow fun!

Through both indoor and outdoor activities and explorations, campers will discover how animals survive the cold, search for tracks and signs and play exciting snow games.

Adult Programs: Programs in the evenings and weekends include lectures, tours and workshops related to gardening, cooking, crafts and more.

Family Programs:

Programs include hands-on family workshops, nature hikes, family cooking classes, Garden Sprouts Preschool Programs and more. Days and times vary so there is something for everyone!

Soup with Substance

Hike, snowshoe or blaze your own skiing trail at the Garden. Then come indoors to enjoy homemade soup, bread and dessert and a garden-related presentation. The evening is finished with live musical entertainment. Tickets include admission to the Garden and snowshoe rentals. Spring Thaw Lecture & Workshop with Ellen Ecker Ogden

Lecture: The Art of Growing Food A kitchen garden is much more than a place to grow food; it is a place to observe and relax, invite beauty and nature and it all starts with good design. In Ellen’s lecture, you’ll learn how to grow an ornamental edible garden with an eye towards beauty, easy care and pleasure. A true kitchen garden opens your senses both in the garden and in the kitchen. Learn Ellen’s six steps to successful garden design, based on classic design techniques that anyone can follow.

This lecture is ideal for new and experienced gardeners, seeking fresh ideas for how to plant a kitchen garden that is rich in details and beckons you to come in and stay a while.

Please register early; class sizes are limited or classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. To hold your space in class, payment is due with registration.

After You Register We will contact you the week of the program to confirm your enrollment. Please dress according to the weather for all outdoor programs. No rain or snow dates are planned. Classes open one half-hour before starting time.

Cancellations & Refunds Classes cancelled due to low enrollment or hazardous weather conditions are refunded automatically. You will be notified by phone if a program is cancelled. In cases of inclement weather, call 920.491.3691 ext. 122 to check the status of the program. If you must cancel your registration for a program, your registration fees will be refunded if notice is received at least five days prior to the program. Green Bay Botanical Garden cannot refund fees requested on or after the start date of a program or for sessions missed due to student illness or other personal situations.

Children & Family Education Programs

“Mommy, outside? Outside?” Children have an instinctual love for nature.

In fact, countless studies have shown that kids who engage in outdoor free play have a more active lifestyle, increased problem-solving and creative thinking abilities, refined social skills and decreased chances for anxiety, depression and other serious health issues.

Yet, former Kindergarten teacher and current Garden Education Docent, Jan LaSota, shares a common concern that kids aren’t connecting with nature as much as they should be. She feels that if they’re not connecting with nature now, they won’t be compelled to take care of it as they get older. “Kids learn best about their environment when they’re in nature, seeing, hearing, touching and smelling it. They don’t see the grandeur of nature and when you’re at the Garden you see it in any season you’re here.”

The Garden is passionate about our mission to connect plants and people. Our skilled education team creates dynamic, hands-on children and family educational programming that boosts creativity and nurtures their minds.

Garden Member, Sarah Thomas, has been bringing her family to the Garden since 2012. One of their favorite programs is Story Time.

Sarah shares, “Not only are they learning, but the Garden leaves lasting memories and is becoming a part of their childhood that will be with them all of their years.”

Because of you, nature-lovers like Jan are able to help shape our future advocates, and families like Sarah’s can experience vibrant, hands-on programs to help them grow to appreciate, respect and love nature.

Plants & Collections

When the founders of Green Bay Botanical Garden first discovered its current site, it was a bleak, forgotten orchard dotted with telephone poles and browning weeds. In the 20 years since its opening, more than 20 of those acres have been developed into stunning gardens.

Thanks to donors like you, we have added over 48,000 plants to our collections. When you donate to Plants and Collections, you help enable our horticulturists to carry out our collections policy which calls for the Garden to showcase plants that are able to grow in Northeast Wisconsin and to incorporate them into a well-designed, landscape setting. Mark A. Konlock, Director of Horticulture, best explains how the King Shade Garden illustrates our collections policy: “We have a nationally recognized hosta collection with mature specimens that we integrate with perennials, trees, shrubs [and] conifers in a landscape type setting so it allows our visitors to see these plants, to learn their exact names... and then to go to their local garden centers to [buy] those plants for their own home garden.”

Beyond the hosta collection, the Garden also has nationally recognized conifer and hemerocallis (daylily) collections and is currently vying for recognition of our magnolias. These collections have played a hand in many garden groups coming to Green Bay in recent years, including the regional conferences for the American Hosta, American Peony and American Conifer Societies and the hosta and conifer societies are also considering Green Bay for upcoming national conferences.

Because of You A veteran suffering from PTSD transformed his life through our

Internship Program

Mark Froelich started his Landscape Horticulture associate degree program at NWTC in 2014 and has been an intern with the Garden’s horticulture team for the past two summers. Prior to starting his studies, Mark was a member of the United States military and served in Iraq. Upon returning home, Mark suffered from PTSD, resulting in difficulty holding a job, caring for his son and even keeping a place to live. After Mark made the decision to go to school in the Landscape Horticulture program, everything clicked and life was turning back around. He now has his own apartment, custody of his son and even his blood pressure has returned to normal because of the calming effects of working with plants through his internship. Mark notes, “This is the perfect place to learn your plants, the experience of working here is going to help me better than anywhere.” While he plans to continue working with the Garden throughout his degree program, he also has big plans for the future.

Where It’s Needed Most

Gerri Gribi, Garden Member and Volunteer, came to the Garden in 2011. She was a self-proclaimed non-gardener looking for something to do with her life after retiring from a rather isolated career as a professional folk musician.

As she volunteered at the front desk, she fell in love with the Garden.

Since also becoming a horticulture volunteer, she moved from absorbing information to wanting to share it as a Garden Ambassador.

Your generous donations provide all of our team members like Gerri with tools, supplies and the needed equipment to grow your Garden.

“It’s hard to describe how … this Garden has changed my life because it’s kind of like finding this half of myself I never knew existed. I have so much more strength and confidence than I ever knew I had. As somebody who’s aging, it’s nice to know I have all of that inside me and to be out here working with people who are twenty years older than me and working with much more strength than I have, so I have this to look forward to.”

Because of you, Gerri is inspired to share her story and passion for connecting plants and people with visitors throughout Northeast Wisconsin and the world. “It’s so exciting that we’re building this worldclass garden and seeing people visiting from places like Holland, Brazil, India and Japan. They’re very interested in this Garden and we’re really connecting plants with people, whether they’re local school kids going through who then bring their parents back, or it’s people from around the world that send a message about what Green Bay is all about.”

Your Garden is governed by a board of directors, nominated by the Governance Committee and elected at the Annual Meeting in October.
