What’s in Bloom Jonie L. Paye, Board Chair

From our Board Chair Jonie Paye, National Sales Director for WBAY-TV, took the leadership reins from Dick Rankin at the Board’s November meeting. Jonie will be chairperson through 2018 and has set the following agenda. I was introduced to Green Bay Botanical Garden in spring and it has long remained my favorite season at the Garden. I look forward to mid-May each year when the spring bulbs are exploding in full color. This year, our 21st, the fall season may rank as a close second as the Grand Garden opens to our members and guests in “grand” fashion with a kick-off weekend of activities. Our board and staff have a busy year ahead as we work on programming for the Grand Garden space and prepare for our first national touring exhibit in 2018, Nature Connects®, an awardwinning exhibition created with over 2 million LEGO® pieces. The Board and staff held a retreat in late January to help us plan for the next few years. I invite you to come out soon and see what is new at the Garden. Thank you to our outgoing board members Deb Kuhn (3 years), Teri Kranz-Drella (3 years) and Bill Wangerin (9 years). Bill will stay on as an advisor for the Board. I close my message sharing my gratitude to you, our members, volunteers and guests, for your support these past twenty years in helping us grow and sustain our shared Green Bay Botanical Garden.

From our Director of Horticulture “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” - Eleanor Roosevelt And do we ever have big dreams here at the Garden! With your help and generosity, the Grand Garden has become a reality. Construction of the buildings, walls and structures will wrap up by June and the planting will begin by staff, interns and volunteers. We plan to have this new 2.5-acre garden planted by early September. Besides this large endeavor, we also have many other new additions planned for your enjoyment in 2017: • 43,000 spring blooming bulbs were planted last fall thanks to our staff and volunteers. Prevea Health volunteers planted over half of these bulbs in one morning on their Make a Difference Day! See our over 250,000 blooms for free on National Public Gardens Day, May 12, and free for mothers on Mother’s Day, May 14. • The Herb Garden will be updated this year to include a Shakespeare garden. Discover what the Bard featured in his musings! • We continue our trialing efforts of annual flowers with All-America Selections (AAS) ornamental seed and Ball Horticulture Company seed products. Peek into the white picket fence below the Stumpf Belvedere hillside this summer to see what will be released in 2018. • Our sustainable rose trialing efforts, including the EarthKind® and American Rose Trials for Sustainability™, will now be more visible from the Grand Garden. Please stop on by, learn something new and help thank our rose judges – Lee Hansen, board member, and Loretta Dorner, staff horticulturist – when you see them in the Garden. • The Mary Hendrickson Johnson Wisconsin Woodland Garden will be getting a new stone entrance path that will feature a grand 12-foot-wide staircase. We’ll also be revitalizing the turf in the large lawn, making those “I Do’s” that much more lush!

Branch Out Make this the year you get more involved with gardening and nature! The Garden has many ways for you to dig into the world of horticulture, including the expertise offered by our local and specialty Garden Clubs. We partner with 12 clubs from the area, all of whom introduce their members to current gardening trends and topics.

Members learn, socialize and contribute to various civic projects determined each year. Their objectives include: • Protection and conservation of natural resources to protect civic beauty and to encourage its improvement • To advance, through education, all facets of the fine art of gardening in landscape design, civic improvement and the study of horticulture • To cooperate with other organizations in the furtherance of the foregoing objectives Lunch meetings are typically the third Tuesday of the month (May – January), at various locations. Gardeners Club of Green Bay

As part of the national Gardeners of America organization, Gardeners Club of Green Bay contributes labor and plant material to community organizations, recognizes garden beautification with the Silver Trowel award and celebrates youth with the Big Sunflower & Pumpkin contests to fulfill their objectives to: • Educate its members and the public and to promote interest in horticulture pertaining to home gardening • Acquire and disseminate horticultural knowledge in regard to materials, plans and ideas in connection with home gardens to and for the benefit of individuals and communities • Encourage and promote pride in individual or private gardens, community plantings and parks Membership is extended to any serious gardener interested in these goals. Green & Gold Hosta Society

Calling all Hosta fans! The G&G Hosta Society strives to educate members on general gardening ideas, as well as: • The care, maintenance, hybridization and propagation of hosta • Use of hosta in landscaping • Growing hosta in containers • Sharing of hosta plants Join Club members for a spring annual meeting and fall harvest fest, as well as a summer bus trip and tours of member gardens. Thank You to our WPS Garden of Lights Volunteers

We are grateful for another incredible year at WPS Garden of Lights! We welcomed over 53,000 visitors from 25 different states. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to our volunteers who make this event possible each year. Two hundred and sixty-five volunteers from our community donated more than 2,370 hours of their time filling 723 shifts to give our guests a one-of-a-kind experience. Many volunteers put in multiple shifts or stayed longer to help make this the third highest attended year in the 20-year history of this event.

Blooming Partnership

This spring, we are excited to partner with Vijai Pandian, Brown County UW-Extension Horticulture Educator, and the N.E.W. Master Gardener Volunteers to provide additional horticulture classes at the Garden. Classes offered at the Garden will be repeat classes of some of those offered at the UW-Extension office in hopes to reach more members of the community and educate about horticulture. Look for classes with this symbol.

New Docent Information Session

Share your passion for the Garden with others – become a Garden Docent! The Garden is looking for fun and responsible volunteers to connect with visitors in both guided and self-guided settings. Think about the impact that we’re making in our community and in the lives of more than 135,000 who visit the Garden each year BECAUSE OF YOU. Enriching adults, children and families through the Garden’s “living” classroom … providing special events year-round … sustaining a vibrant and active volunteer program … growing the Garden for future generations. And we are growing! BECAUSE OF YOU, we’re planting more than 15,000 annuals for our visitors’ viewing pleasure this Summer. Get ready for explosions of color to welcome visitors as they enter the Garden, highlighting our unique structures and sculptures. We also continue to grow that special ingredient, people! Forty-five interns and seasonal employees have trained with our horticultural staff over the last five years. Many now hold successful careers in horticulture and environmental science, and all learn about teamwork and laboring with volunteers to make a community organization thrive. BECAUSE OF YOU our educational programming continues to grow. Through the new Garden Outreach programs, GBBG Educators travel into schools, daycares and after school programs for a fun and interactive learning experience. These programs inspire students’ natural curiosity and engage them in science activities to learn more about the plants and animals of the Garden. Our educators bring all the supplies needed for a captivating field trip right in the teacher’s own classroom! Last year the Garden offered 37 outreach programs and reached more than 850 students.

Plant Your Own Salsa Garden Get your kids or grandkids excited about gardening and show them how much fun it is to grow your own food! Making your own fresh salsa is fun and easy…and not to mention healthy (although you don’t have to tell the kids that!). Fresh salsas tend to be low in calories, high in fiber and full of vitamins. Plus, they don’t contain many of the additives, preservatives and salt found in most store-bought versions. When growing your own ‘Salsa Plants’ you have control over how your food is grown and are always guaranteed the freshest produce. What are some good Salsa Plants? Try some All-America Selections (AAS) winners listed below! Winning year is in parenthesis. If you choose to start your salsa plants from seed, start indoors beginning in late March. Follow the instructions on the seed packets, as each type of plant may have different growing requirements. Most prefer full sun and regular watering. If you don’t have the space to start seeds indoors, you can simply buy your plants from your local nursery or greenhouse. What makes a good Salsa Garden? Whether you are starting seeds indoors or purchasing plants, make sure to plant outside after all danger of frost has passed, usually by the end of May in Wisconsin. Choose a location for your salsa plants that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. To get the most productivity out of your garden, remember to weed, water, fertilize and harvest on a weekly basis throughout the season.

Emerald Fire Jalapeno Pepper (pictured above) Botanical Name: Capsicum annuum ‘Emerald Fire’ Common Name: Emerald Fire jalapeno pepper Habit: Annual Size: 30-40” tall, 18” wide Light: Full Sun Days to Harvest (from Transplant): 90 2015 All-America Selections winner What makes it a good Salsa Garden plant? The key ingredient to any good salsa is a good jalapeno. Measuring in at 2,500 Scoville units, this pepper is great not only for making salsa, but also for stuffing and grilling. Emerald Fire’s extra-large fruits are thick-walled and less prone to cracking than other cultivars. The plants are compact, yet very prolific. Consistent soil moisture is key for bountiful fruit set and uniform heat amongst the fruit. We grew this cultivar in the garden last year and were very impressed with its performance. Where can I buy Salsa Plants? New this year, you can purchase ‘Grow Gardens Grow Salsa’ kits in the WPS Trellis Gift Shop! You can also visit the All-America Selections website (www.all-americaselections.org), visit your local nursery or greenhouse or purchase plants at our annual Garden Fair in June. Don’t forget to take this article with you when you go shopping! Keep in mind, the types and quantities of plants you use will depend on your favorite salsa recipe and how much you plan on making.
