From our Executive Director Summer’s arrival brings anticipation of all that is good in life… and everything done outdoors feels more gratifying, more real. This summer will bring our Grand Garden closer to reality. We have made great progress and are looking forward to a busy summer of planting and establishing this garden. Be sure to join us in the new Schneider Classroom and WPS Foundation Plaza for summer cookouts on BMO Harris Bank Getaway Wednesdays as you watch your garden grow.

We are planning grand opening events the week of Labor Day: • Thursday, September 7 – Official Ribbon Cutting of the Grand Garden. All donors will be invited to participate. There’s still time to donate! Anyone giving a gift of $500 or more by May 31 will be listed on the donor recognition sculpture. Contact me for more details at sgarot@gbbg.org or 920.491.3691 ext. 102. • Friday, September 8 – Field to Fork is a fresh dining experience that will showcase the Grand Garden and feature an elegant meal under the stars with local produce and farm fresh ingredients prepared by Chives Restaurant. This intimate evening is accompanied by exquisite wine pairings and live music. • Saturday, September 9 – Fall Family Art Festival welcomes everyone to see the new space. This free community event features art & craft vendors, children’s activities, food and beverage, plant sales & displays by local Garden Clubs and more. • Saturday, September 9 – Brews, Bistros & Bonfires introduces the new Billie Kress Amphitheater in the Grand Garden. Groove to live music by Midwest Dueling Pianos, watch the bonfire flames dance in the crisp fall air, savor a variety of tasty foods from local restaurants and sip frothy Green Bay brews.

Looking ahead to the summer of 2018, it will be our grandest as we prepare for a full season of events, including music, theater and our state’s first internationally touring garden exhibit.

It starts by thinking about not only the plants’ basic requirements (sun, soil and moisture) and design characteristics (form, flower color, texture, etc.) but also about their ecological benefits. For example, examine how many insects different plant species can support. By including plants that will supply food for more insects, they’ll in turn feed more birds, which then feed other animals. Simply put, the sun’s energy, the source of all life on earth, continues up the food chain and does not just stop at the plant. Check out the plant search tool under construction at the National Wildlife Federation’s website for detailed plant choice information: http://www.nwf.org/NativePlantFinder/ About. In general, plants that are native to Wisconsin provide the most habitat and insect food. This makes sense because the plants and insects have evolved together over the years. And remember, since you now want the insects to eat the leaves of your plants, when you see that damage, it is a good thing!

Nature Connects : Art with LEGO Bricks by Sean Kenney debuts at the Garden May 25 – August 19, 2018. Guests of all ages are invited to stimulate their imaginations and discover the connections between art, nature, play and design with this recordbreaking exhibit. Natureinspired sculptures crafted entirely of LEGO bricks will challenge the way you think of traditional garden exhibits and connect families with nature, creativity and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) in a whole new way. In addition to the sculpture display, special events and activities celebrating art, nature and play are scheduled throughout the three-month exhibit.

The massive planting project at Green Bay Botanical Garden (over 11,500 perennials and over 1,000 trees and shrubs) with the Grand Garden got us thinking. Our master plan update in 2003 included a Wildflower Garden in the footprint that is now the Grand Garden. And with all the news about pollinator habitat loss and bee decline, why not use this opportunity to create a beautiful large garden that adds to the wildlife habitat at the Garden? So we did, and so can you!

Featured Native Plant: Red Oak Botanical Name: Quercus rubra Common Name: Red oak Habit: Deciduous tree Size: 60-75’ tall, 40-50’ wide Light: Full sun Hardiness: Zone 4-8 The red oak is a valuable, fastgrowing oak that is great for lawns and parks, but also does well in commercial and urban settings as it tolerates salt and air pollution. Leaves emerge pinkish-red, turning dark green in summer, and changing to bright red in autumn. This native oak can grow up to 100 feet in the wild and supports over 500 members of the insect population - not to mention the birds that feed on them! A great choice when adding seasonal interest and wildlife habitat to your yard.

Mark A. Konlock, Director of Horticulture An often-unmentioned and controversial topic when incorporating native plants into the landscape is sustainability through time. Although you might like the look of a prairie meadow and its ecological diversity, researchers at Michigan State University have found this look to be considered unattractive to the average American. We have been trained to think of a tidy landscape as appealing and neighborly. The problem comes when you sell your house, which the average American does every 5 to 7 years, and the next owner mows down your prairie! How do we preserve this habitat throughout time? A possible answer - use native plants in a more landscaped arrangement. Rather than creating a natural prairie in your backyard, consider adding native plants to your garden by grouping them as you would other perennials. This may seem to go against the grain of habitat creation, but if we want to make a long-term impact on habitat, this method might be more effective throughout changes in home ownership. As you plan your garden this summer, strongly consider adding some native plants to your garden. Not only will they be beautiful, drought tolerant and require no fertilizer, they will also provide food for insects, and by doing so, the entire food chain. Let’s help those critters out. We are all in this together!

CatONCERTS the Garden Thursdays, June 22 – August 17

Relax during evening performances that thrill music lovers across all genres and all generations. Stroll through the Garden, enjoy live music, wine, beer and dining. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets and their dancing shoes. No alcohol carry-ins allowed inside the Garden. No concert July 6. Sanimax Concerts will be moved into the Schneider Education Center if there is inclement weather.

Summer Trip: Gardens of Lower Michigan Join Green Bay Botanical Garden as we explore fabulous gardens from Green Bay to lower Michigan in all their summertime glory! Tour the beautiful origami exhibit at The Morton Arboretum, spend the night in South Bend, Indiana, then on to lower Michigan to tour Fernwood Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and even the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum on this four day trip July 13-16, 2017. This year’s program has a new look! With the addition of the Grand Garden, we have approximately 1,000 trees and shrubs and more than 11,500 perennials to plant. Work side-by-side with staff as they guide you through the tasks for the evening and then enjoy a delicious meal. The Garden will provide grilled meats and beverages. We ask you to bring a dish to share. Join us and be a part of something grand!

The Garden has many ways for you to dig into the world of horticulture, including the expertise offered by more than a dozen local garden clubs. This summer, we will grow our partnership with these clubs as they join us during BMO Harris Bank Getaway Wednesdays. Club members will be stationed by their specialty beds for you to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to help you explore more about gardening, plants and nature. Northeast Wisconsin Rose Society Founded in 1991, the mission of this club is to serve all who are interested in rose growing in Northeast Wisconsin and is affiliated with the American Rose Society. Activities include: • Helping other Rosarians, or Rosarian-wannabes, learn proper care and maintenance • Introducing new varietals at Garden Fair while selling roses as an annual fundraiser • Helping maintain the roses in the Lux Foundation Upper Rose Garden at the Garden and assisting Garden staff with rose trial research • Viewing member rose gardens • Displaying the best of the area at Fall Family Art Festival Membership is open to anyone interested in rose growing. Northeast Wisconsin Unit of the Herb Society of America Whether you are new to appreciating and understanding herbs or a seasoned herbalist, the N.E.W. Unit of the Herb Society of America is an encouraging and engaging group of herb enthusiasts. Activities include: • Themed meetings featuring projects, presentations and speakers • Herb of the month discussions – culinary and medicinal properties, botany, history and lore • The Book Thymes book club • Hands-on workshops and events • Herbal gatherings in Northeast Wisconsin • Helping design and maintain Garden herb beds and providing information for educational materials • Free, quarterly e-zine, The Wisconsin Herbalist (download at www.thewisconsinherbalist.com) New members are always welcome, regardless of prior herbal experience. Meetings are held at the Garden the second Tuesday of every month, May-September, and in Seymour the second Saturday of every month, October-April.
