Green Bay Botanical Garden

ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014

Message from the Chair & Executive Director Each year we are pleased to see our number of new members and visitors grow. People engage with Green Bay Botanical Garden on so many levels, and it’s reassuring to know that all the hard work put in by both paid and unpaid (volunteer) staff really has an impact! It’s about passion and drive, and wanting to make our community and your Garden a better place. This past year we impacted over 90,000 lives, including those of school children, adult learners, event goers, daily visitors, wedding and social event guests, families learning to grow vegetables, organizations hosting client and employee events and more. The serenity of the Garden was also host to several memorial services. The Garden attracts people of all ages, and in all stages of their lives. The amazing beauty and adventure that is your Garden awaits. During the year, we updated our strategic plan and committed to: • Continuing to increase our visitors to the Garden. • Growing and retaining our membership. As of April 30, 2014, we had nearly 3,000 members, an amazing number for a Garden in the size of a community such as Green Bay. • Continuing to strive for financial sustainability. Our endowment continues to grow as do our earned revenues. • Ensuring continued recruitment and training of volunteers results in adequate support for all we do at the Garden. • Focusing on staff recruitment, development and compensation to ensure retention of staff to accomplish our mission. • Board leadership development and succession planning ensuring an engaged, diverse and active board. • Better use of technology in carrying out the Garden’s mission. • Focusing on the next phase of development which is the Grand Garden concept. Major support continues to come through you, our members, through your membership support, purchases in the gift shop, attendance at events, and our annual appeal. We were blessed to also receive a significant grant from the Byron Walter Trust to support our internship program. During the busy summer of 2013, we had 11 interns that helped with gardening and implementing all of our events and visitor services. These students not only helped grow the garden, but grew themselves as well. In a season ending survey, 100% of the respondents indicated their internship here was a tremendous learning and growing experience, and they all believed it would translate into ongoing success in school as well as the workforce.

The World of Horticulture Gardens & Maintenance Last fiscal year was very fruitful for the Garden with the construction of the Simurdiak Patio featuring the Wos Garden on the east side of the Donald & Patricia Schneider Education Center. This expansion allows additional outdoor space for a variety of events and enhances the beauty of the entrance to the Emil and Gail Fischer Visitor Center and functionality of the Cornerstone Foundation Hall. In addition, the Arendt Conifer Garden was introduced on the west side of the Fischer Visitor Center in which 218 unique dwarf conifers were planted. We also celebrated a new garden with the dedication of the Baer Perennial Garden in the summer of 2013, which honors the memory of Frederick Baer and his love for gardening. Hundreds of other plants were added to GBBG’s collection throughout the grounds to increase diversity, compliment existing displays and add further interest throughout each season.

Collections Management Our collection increased to 44,270 permanent plants and 3,189 species and cultivars. We continue to transition from paper to permanent anodized aluminum labels, doubling our total to 3,850 this fiscal year.

The support from members and the community is heartwarming and satisfying, knowing that our early founders’ dreams are being realized. We help create memories and cement traditions that will continue for generations to come. All because of you! Please read this report and celebrate with us the success we’ve all achieved in the past year. As always, we welcome your input as we continue to shape and design the Garden, YOUR Garden, for YOUR future.

“As a business major at the University of St. Thomas, I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to intern at GBBG during the past two summers as a special events/adult education intern! The wide variety of experiences gained, and the wonderful fellow employees I have had the opportunity to get to know will always leave a special place in my heart for the GBBG!” ~ Nicole Pott

“Giving throughout the years to GBBG has been a pleasure and a challenge. When you help start an organization like this, giving as much as you can each year to help the garden grow is a natural thing to do. We know that GBBG will give as

Adult Education

Children & Family Education

The Garden offered more than 80 educational and enjoyable adult classes for our members and friends in the community: • More than 1,470 people attended a program this year, with our highest attended being Travelogues to Paris and the Netherlands, forums about Victory Gardens and Zero Waste, and Growing Blueberries in Containers. • 51 participants joined the bus trip to Chicago Area Gardens, including Cantigny Park & Gardens, Ball Seed Trial & Display Gardens and Chicago Botanic Garden. • The Spring Thaw Symposium “Chic Gardening – Green & Glamorous” hosted 96 guests. Speakers included Kelly D. Norris, Rich Eyre, and Jeff Epping.

• Area students, day care centers and scout groups gained valuable experiences during educational field trips to the Garden. We led 109 tours totaling more than 3,380 people. • Summer family classes, weekly story hours, twoweeks of summer camp and weekly Discovery Station activities reached 466 children and their family members during the summer. • Partnerships with community organizations allowed us to introduce the Garden to more than 1000 people during the winter season. Visitors to the Einstein Science Expo learned about composting, attendees of Live 54218’s Kids Food Event discovered how easy growing food can be, and students from Martin and Webster Elementary Schools found out what it takes to be a horticulturist during their Career Days.

Special Garden Events Green Bay Botanical Garden hosts a number of special events throughout the year to engage the community and visitors from across the Midwest and beyond. The 2013-2014 calendar of special events entertained 46,817 guests, bringing them to the Garden to enjoy garden-related programs, local music and art, delectable food and beverages, family-friendly activities and educational opportunities, good company and of course, the beauty of the Garden in every season. The biggest growth in event attendance was at Art Harvest with an 87% increase. Mother’s Day Brunch, Sanimax Concerts at the Garden series, Soup with Substance and Winter Family Festival all saw an increase in event attendance as well. WPS Garden of Lights captured the imaginations of nearly 35,000 guests over the holiday season despite some of the coldest temperatures in the 17-year history of the event. GBBG’s special events interest attendees of all ages and continue to grow throughout the years.

“We chose to support the Garden because we have always dreamed of having a beautiful Botanical Garden in Green Bay where people of all ages could come and learn about plants and enjoy their beauty.” ~ Lee and Louise Hansen

Green Bay Botanical Garden welcomed 90,730 visitors from all over the state, country & world.

Facility & Garden Rentals The Garden has seen steady growth in facility and garden rentals with the addition of enhanced bookable space throughout the recent years and positive word-of-mouth recommendations. Facility rentals for conferences, meetings, parties, bridal and baby showers, memorials, wedding receptions and more totaled 108 reservations. The Garden served as the backdrop for 74 outdoor wedding ceremonies, becoming part of a lasting memory for not only the newly married couples, but all in attendance. Since 2010, rental revenue has soared by an astonishing 225% and the demand for wedding, corporate and private rentals at this unique destination continues to increase.

Volunteers The Garden’s 540 active volunteers make an impact each and every day in our community. They work hard at events, multi task in administrative roles, balance the tasks of watering, weeding, planting and maintaining the gardens, and work diligently behind the scenes to ensure that we achieve our mission. Together they generously donated a total of 7,735 hours, which is estimated to be the equivalent of nearly $170,000 in labor. GBBG brought the necessary number of volunteer hours down from previous years by improving efficiency at events in particular. Our dedicated volunteers are an important asset to the Garden and continue to amaze staff members with their willingness to help in all areas. © www.amensonstudio.com

People & Partnerships Income

An Enduring Partnership with NWTC

Members

We continue to strengthen our partnership with our landlord, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC). The Garden enjoys a long-term lease on the college campus, and has created and maintained partnerships with many of the learning programs on campus: • Students in the Landscape Horticulture program help grow, plant and develop the hardscapes on the Garden grounds. We also hire summer interns from this program each year. • The print shop at NWTC provides printing, folding and stuffing services. • Students from the Administrative & Office Professional program help with the administrative needs of the Garden through internships. • Members of the Criminal Justice and Horticulture student clubs volunteer their time to help with traffic control during WPS Garden of Lights. • Students in the Electrical Power Distribution program help pull cable and power lines and install structures for WPS Garden of Lights.

The Garden saw many new and returning members with the record number of 2,964 member households at the end of the fiscal year. This new number is a 10% increase from the prior year. Our member retention rate held strong at 70%, slightly higher than the national average of 65%. The Garden continually seeks to offer members new and exciting opportunities while focusing on member retention and recruitment. GBBG members offer vital support for the growth of the Garden and programs.

The students that become involved in these opportunities with the Garden not only benefit through gaining real life experiences, but intrinsically they are helping their community.
