Partners & Volunteers Anne Basten, Membership and Volunteer Manager

We are happy to recognize these individuals as our 2015 Corporate Partner & Volunteers of the Year! an inspiration. She welcomes guests with a smile treating everyone with respect and kindness. She is willing and able to do whatever is asked of her and takes pride in her work. The gift of her time is priceless!

Corporate Partner of the Year BMO Harris Bank/ BMO Private Bank

has been engaged with the Garden since 2007. They began as a Corporate Member and soon after became an annual sponsor of our concert series. They supported the Growing the Garden Capital Campaign in 2010 and took on an even greater role by increasing their support as the new Lead Sponsor of the Sanimax Concerts series in 2014. In addition, Executive Assistant, Cheryl Beilfuss, is a dedicated advocate of the Garden. She ensures BMO Harris Bank employees are aware of the benefits provided through the Bank’s support and encourages participation in the Corporate Partner Employee days at the Garden.

Development Volunteer of the Year Kathy Hartman has been involved with the

Garden Board of Directors since 2005. She has been Chair of the Fund Development Committee since 2012 and served on the Growing the Garden Capital Campaign Cabinet in 2010. Kathy led the process for the Garden’s re-branding initiative in 2013. She has also provided direction to GBBG’s Board of Directors in various Fund Development initiatives. As a result, the Garden saw an increase in its Annual Campaign donors as well as in overall donations of more than $17,000. We appreciate Kathy’s dedication and commitment!

Guest Services Volunteer of the Year Maureen Ackerman began volunteering at the

Garden when it was all but a dream. Back then, you could find Maureen alongside the Horticultural Staff, planting, weeding and doing whatever was needed. She made the move inside when help was needed at the front desk. Maureen has been faithfully volunteering there ever since and has been

Horticulture Volunteer of the Year Ricki Krautkramer comes in every Tuesday

with a smile on her face, delicious baked goods in-hand, and is ready to seize the day. Since volunteering with us in 2012, Ricki has taken on any job without complaining…whether it be weeding the sidewalk cracks with a nail at the end of a stick or refusing to leave until we are finished planting all 2,500 and some odd bulbs in front of the Visitor Center in the pouring rain and mud. Ricki also spends countless hours volunteering for numerous Garden events, usually taking the jobs no one else wants. We can count on Ricki for anything. She is the perfect example of what makes a great volunteer!

Facilities Volunteer of the Year Lee Zaddack is one of those volunteers you can

count on when you’re in any predicament. Lee is truly a jack-of-all-trades. There seems to be nothing that he hasn’t done, or tried, when it comes to outdoor horticulture and facilities maintenance. He mows, paints, repairs; he cleans, weeds, waters, and harvests produce; and he is part of the WPS Garden of Lights setup and takedown crew. Plus Lee has volunteered at most of our events in some facet or another. He has been a volunteer at the Garden since 1997 and has been a joy to work with. Lee also celebrated his 80th birthday this year.

Youth Volunteer of the Year: Anna Burie volunteered close to 20 hours for

2014 WPS Garden of Lights while being a full time high school student. Anna has stayed on board and has been volunteering throughout the spring and summer of 2015. We have seen her personality blossom over the summer through her efforts in the

Snowshoes Experience a winter adventure by exploring the Garden on snowshoes! During the winter months, snowshoes are available to use on site and are free with Garden admission. We have sizes suitable for kids (6 years and older) and adults, as well as marked paths in the Garden. Snowshoe check out requires that guests leave a driver’s license at the desk in exchange for their snowshoes. Get out and enjoy the snow at the Garden this year!

Partners & Volunteers Garden with our horticultural staff and the volunteer roles she has played during Sanimax Concerts at the Garden Series. She is a great addition to our events and horticulture staff and keeps us all smiling. Thank you Anna for helping the Garden grow!

Special Events Volunteer of the Year: Dale Bartel has volunteered over 80 hours at the

Garden this year. You’ve seen him at Mother’s Day Brunch helping children craft a planting project for mom, Garden Fair checking people in at admissions, Sanimax Concerts popping delicious popcorn, Fall Family Art Festival playing games with children, directing guests at WPS Garden of Lights and helping to create an edible craft during Winter Family Festival. Dale truly enjoys connecting families with the Garden and helping to create a remarkable memory of their time spent here. Dale always brings a smile to our faces. The Garden is so grateful for his support and the time he’s given in support of our mission.

Education Volunteer of the Year: Amy Kopp’s love of the Garden began as a

gardener in our Peas in a Pod Family Gardening program. When she became a volunteer reader for our summer story time, we were wowed by her endless enthusiasm and passion for working with children! When she decided to join our docent team, we did a happy dance, because the energy and excitement she brings to everything she does is so contagious. This year, Amy has also agreed to help us research and launch our educational outreach programs into the schools, simply because she has so much fun doing it. We appreciate her interest and continued support of education at the Garden.

Gardens & Plants Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture

Tidal Wave Red Velour Petunia

Update from our Director of Horticulture The end of the season is a great time to evaluate how our summer gardens performed. Which plants were show stoppers? Which ones just stopped? At GBBG we not only evaluate all of our new plants throughout the Garden, but we also evaluate some specific trial plants all season long. As the Garden grows, we have become more involved with the horticultural science side of gardening. The trialing we perform allows our visitors and members to see new plants before they are released to get them on their purchase list - and to ask local garden centers to supply them. Our trialing allows local garden centers and growers to see the plants perform in a garden setting which may help determine if they are worthy of adding to their garden center’s inventory. During the summer of 2015, GBBG was involved in four major trialing efforts: • Ball Horticultural Company. Fifty-one different annuals and perennials were part of the trial. The plants were evaluated by our horticulture staff and interns monthly throughout the growing season with results sent back to Ball Horticultural Company. Some of the show stoppers were Tidal Wave Red Velour petunia, Taishan Orange Improved marigold, Glamour euphorbia, Campfire coleus, Flame Thrower Chili Pepper coleus, and Flame Thrower Spiced Curry coleus. Look for these plants on sale next spring. • All-America Selections (AAS) trials. GBBG is one of about 45 trial gardens in the United States that compares a breeder’s entry plant against the most commonly grown industry standards of that particular plant. The entry plants are compared and rated against the comparison plants throughout the trial, and then a score sheet is sent into AAS at the end of the evaluation period. This year 12 entries were evaluated against 19 comparisons for a total of 31 different plants. Our results are tabulated along with those from the other trial gardens to

AAS Greenhouse Evaluation

determine if the entry plant is worthy of an AAS designation. Look for AAS plants and seeds when shopping this spring to get proven performers into your garden. Go to www.all-americaselections.org to find your favorites. • American Rose Trial for Sustainability or A.R.T.S.®. This trial includes 15 shrub roses in 4 replicated blocks, equaling 60 plants total, which were planted and watered for a few weeks to establish them. After that, the shrub roses received no supplemental water, no fertilizer, no pesticide treatment, and no winter protection. The idea is to find beautiful flowering roses that require very minimal care and are not susceptible to insects and disease. Board member, Lee Hansen, and horticulturist, Loretta Dorner, evaluate the roses monthly. GBBG is one of 11 national sites in the A.R.T.S.® program. Roses are trialed for two years, after which a new group is planted. Check out www. americanrosetrialsforsustainability.org for more information. Look for the trial site next summer, and look for A.R.TS. ® winning roses in garden centers in the upcoming years. • Earth-Kind® Rose Trial. This trial includes 20 hybrid tea and floribunda roses in 4 replicated blocks, equaling 80 plants total. These roses are treated similarly to the A.R.T.S.® roses except they will get mulched for winter protection. This year the plants were simply established. Data collection will begin next year and continue for three years total. The trial’s goal is to provide homeowners and retailers with trouble-free hybrid tea and floribunda roses that look great with minimal care. GBBG is the only northern test site for this trial in the country. Learn more at www.aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ earthkindroses/about/ and view the plants next year at GBBG. Being home to the Packers, we in Green Bay know what it feels like to be the best in the country. With these trialing efforts, your garden is striving toward its goal to be the leading educational and horticultural destination in the upper Midwest. Please come out and see what is growing on next summer!

Grow Your Garden From our Director of Development What makes Green Bay Botanical Garden your Garden? Is it the look of wonder on a child’s face while they stretch their imagination in the Gertrude B. Nielsen Children’s Garden? Or is it the way you are transported into a different world, discovering new flowers, perennials or shrubs for your garden? Perhaps it is peace and tranquility as you stroll quietly through the King Shade Garden or a moment of laughter and joy as you share quality time with family and friends while creating a magical memory at WPS Garden of Lights. Whatever makes Green Bay Botanical Garden your garden, please know that it’s made possible through the generosity of friends like you. The Garden’s Annual Campaign provides support that is necessary to enhance and expand the Garden’s core programs. • Horticultural staff takes great pride in growing in a sustainable manner, protecting the Garden’s environment and continually enhancing displays so everyone can enjoy the wonder and beauty of the Garden. • The Garden’s skilled education team creates dynamic, hands-on children and family educational programming that boosts creativity and nurtures the mind. • Our internship programs are a win-win for students and the Garden, with students gaining valuable hands-on practical experience. The Garden gains the necessary hands needed to maintain 47 acres of beautiful garden spaces and manage existing and expanded events and programs. • Year-round events and free days at the Garden draw visitors to this one-of-a-kind landscape of beauty and serenity, providing a getaway in the city for our community.

Cindy Berton, Director of Development “Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. The anticipation nurtures our dream.” - Barbara Winkler Today we ask you to join us in supporting your Garden through a gift to the Annual Campaign. We are happy to report with the launch of this year’s campaign we have received support from 100% of our staff and board members! As a private, 501(c)(3) organization, the Garden doesn’t receive any local, state or federal government funding. We rely solely on the generosity of our members, visitors, friends and community for support. Your gift is tax deductible. Be sure to make your gift by December 31 to receive the deduction on your 2015 return. To donate: • Visit www.GBBG.org/Donate • Complete and mail the enclosed envelope • Call (920) 491-3691 ext. 104 Double the impact of your gift with employer matching. Every year many companies match gifts to the Garden made by their employees. Some may also match gifts from spouses and retirees! To find out if your company matches donations, contact your employer’s human resources department. Get a matching gift form from them and follow the directions for doubling – or even tripling – your gift. Thank you for your investment in this recreational and educational gem within the Green Bay community!
