From our Director of Horticulture “I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.” - Ruth Stout
Green Bay Botanical Garden continues to improve, and this season will be a busy one. Here are some of the projects you will see during your visits throughout this growing season: • Over 50,000 spring blooming bulbs were planted last fall. There are many opportunities to come and see GBBG’s amazing spring display at reduced rates including National Public Garden’s Day and Mother’s Day. • This summer we will be adding to the Arendt Conifer Garden with a $5,000 donation of plants we received from Conifer Kingdom thanks to your diligent voting in the Facebook contest this winter. • In preparation for the creation of the Grand Garden, 86 trees including 73 magnolias will be moved from their current location west of the Donald & Patricia Schneider Education Center to a storage area or other parts of the garden. Trees in the storage area will then be relocated back into the Grand Garden landscape once it is completed. As part of this process, GBBG is applying to be part of the North American Plant Collections Consortium for the genus Magnolia. This process will catalog our hardy magnolia collection on a national level.

• The new rose trial garden north of the Education Center created last fall will be planted with 80 shrub roses as part of the American Rose Trials for Sustainability and 60 hybrid tea and floribunda roses as part of the Earth-Kind Modern Rose Trial. GBBG will be the lone Northern trial site in the United States of the Earth-Kind hybrid tea and floribunda rose trial. • GBBG continues its All-America Selections ornamental seed trials with 12 entries and 19 comparisons, as well as its evaluations for Ball Horticultural Company. • We will be revitalizing the Herb Gardens this year by consolidating plants and adding an Up and Coming Herbs section (what’s new and hot in the culinary world), a Three Sisters Garden, and a Drinks Garden (herbs that are traditionally/historically used in teas, ales, liqueurs). • The Gertrude B. Nielsen Children’s Garden will feature a “Candy Crush” garden celebrating plants with names somehow related to candy. Take a look up from your cell phone and check it out! We invite you to bring a friend and visit often as the Garden offers different experiences each day. Happy Spring!

How Do You Express Your Values? Most of us express our values through some form of giving, whether it’s our time, talent or treasure. We choose to give our precious commodities in support of what is important in our lives. As with so many of you who give to your Garden, Les & Dar Stumpf express their values through all three: time, talent and treasure. Les and Dar’s first involvement with Green Bay Botanical Garden (GBBG) harkens back to the first Garden Fair, held in 1985 at the old Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Depot on Dousman Street, now home to Titletown Brewery. Dar met then president, Glenn Spevacek, and over the next few years, GBBG stole her heart before it was officially born. The Stumpf ’s joined the Garden in 1988, and have been instrumental in its growth. Over the ensuing years, the Stumpf ’s invested in the Garden’s development, including the Belvedere, the Hobbit House, the sundial in the Children’s Garden and numerous other projects. In addition to helping with development, Les Stumpf Ford has also supported annual programming through its longstanding sponsorship of events. Both Stumpfs have a great love for all the volunteers of the Garden. Les has always believed in hard work, and appreciates all the efforts put forth by the hundreds of volunteers here at GBBG each year. He credits his father for his work ethic, and believes “work is love made visible,” which he aptly notes is present here at GBBG. He and Dar have their own very noteworthy garden, and both are actively involved in growing and maintaining it. In fact, they hosted a private tour for GBBG members last summer. Back in the day, Les built a “trellis” display rack to hold materials as Dar and others traveled to attend garden shows around the region, promoting the “birth” of our Garden by encouraging support through donations and memberships. Their grandchildren attended our junior gardening program and Dar volunteered her time while they were learning. Dar served as board president and presided over the spring groundbreaking of the Visitor Center and its ribbon-cutting in 1995.
Keep Us Growing Green Bay Botanical Garden is a place for exploration, inspiration, celebration and rejuvenation and provided over 90,500 unique experiences last year alone! Children discover the magic of Mother Nature, couples celebrate their love for one another and friends and families make lasting memories. In addition, volunteers engage in their passion for gardening, artists are inspired to create, tourists explore the natural beauty within the city setting of Green Bay and individuals seek tranquility in the beautiful and peaceful Garden. People of all ages and walks of life come to the Garden to learn, refresh and engage with the environment. Please give a gift to YOUR 501(c)(3) nonprofit Green Bay Botanical Garden this year to ensure that it continues to flourish and we are able to meet the increased needs and expectations of our members, volunteers and community. It is our continuous goal to offer new and exceptional experiences each year for you, your family, friends and generations to come. Our annual campaign wraps up on April 30th. Won’t you please help us raise $200,000? We’re confident we can reach our goal through your generosity. To make your tax-deductible donation today, please return the enclosed envelope, visit www.gbbg.org to donate online or contact Cindy Berton, Director of Development, at 920-491-3691 ext. 104 to donate over the phone. Many employers provide a corporate matching gift to your tax-deductible contributions. Some companies match 2:1 or even 3:1 meaning your donation is doubled or tripled in your name. To find out if your company has a matching gift program for current employees and/or retirees, contact the human resources department where you work. Thank you for recognizing the importance of YOUR Garden’s mission and for your investment in its future!
$200,000
Both believe it’s important to teach philanthropy, which to them means giving what you have at the time you have it, and giving where you can make a difference. The Stumpfs often come to the Garden with an entourage, be it family or friends, and they feel a commitment to expose all those they love to their love here in Green Bay. Dar believes “friendraising” is a duty we all have to our Garden. Dar notes, “Every time I drive through the Garden gates, I feel I’m coming home.” While Les loves the Garden, he’s quick to note “not to THAT extreme” as he fondly nods to his wife. Of all the things in her life, Dar believes GBBG is one of “those constants”—her heart will live on here long beyond. For more information on legacy or planned giving, please contact Susan Garot, Executive Director, at 920-491-3691 ext. 102 or sgarot@gbbg.org.

Spring Has Sprung! Wake up garden; spring is finally here! Every season has a reason, and spring is the season of awakenings. Garden critters and plants awake from their long winter naps. Bees begin buzzing, turtles and frogs wiggle their way out of the mud, and birds make their way back to the garden, singing their favorite spring songs. The spring season is full of bright colors, joyful sounds and sweet smells, all which can be found at Green Bay Botanical Garden! Kids, want to learn more about those frogs wiggling out of the mud? Visit our Children’s Library and be sure to check out one of our newest books, Noisy Frog by John Himmelman. Learn about the sounds of tree frogs, toads, bullfrogs and more in this interactive story! Listen along to the frog sounds while enjoying the story here: http://www.dawnpub.com/ downloadable_activities_book/.
