Growing our Social Responsibility The mission of Green Bay Botanical Garden is to connect people and plants, in an environment that engages, inspires, and refreshes. We believe caring for our environment has a direct impact on our mental and physical well-being. People who visit the Garden express a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, and often-times tell us they leave feeling refreshed and inspired. Yet, a barrier exists for many in our community, and that is an admission fee. As a way to overcome that barrier, we offer a number of opportunities for the community to enjoy nature in their own backyards. Throughout the four seasons, your Green Bay Botanical Garden is open and accessible to everyone in the community: • Members receive free general admission throughout the year, with greatly reduced fees for special event admissions. • During Summer, we offer free Wednesdays from 4 – 8 p.m. during June, July & August and that includes Discovery Station with its family-focused activities, thanks to a grant from Green Bay Packers Foundation. We also offer free admission with the purchase of lunch during our Wednesday Cookouts. • During Autumn, our Fall Family Art Festival is a free admission event. • Winter brings the WPS Garden of Lights, and last year, we offered free admission opportunities to our non-profit partners, thanks to Schreiber. They were able to invite over 500 of their client families for fellowship, hot beverages and snacks, and early admission to the lights. Also featured is the free Winter Family Festival and Free Fridays during February. • Springtime has National Public Gardens Day in May — a free Friday that encourages the community to come out and experience the spring Garden. • Throughout the year we have free days for veterans, grandparents, moms and dads.
Arendt Conifer Garden Expands The Garden is the recipient of a generous gift from Conifer Kingdom of Portland, Oregon. Thank you to those that participated in an online marketing contest last fall, by liking Green Bay Botanical Garden on the Conifer Kingdom’s Facebook page. We are receiving $5,000 in new conifer plants. Gene and Betty Arendt have stepped forward to provide the funding to expand the Arendt Conifer Garden to the area just west of the Mabel Thome Patio, off the back of the Schneider Education Center. Meissner Landscape completed the construction this spring. Stop by and explore our 1,000-plus conifer plants, representing 521 varieties. Some of our favorites include the puffy little Sea Urchin white pine, the red tinged Fire Chieftain arborvitae and the chartreuse needled Winter Sonne mugo pine.
Through the generosity of a number of our local service clubs (Downtown Rotary, Preble Optimists) we engage over 500 school children from at-risk schools in our school tour program where kids learn about seeds, stems, pollinators and the like. starting with at-risk youth in area schools and youth organizations. Finally, as part of our social responsibility, we annually donate nearly 200 memberships, admission passes and special event tickets to dozens of community nonprofit organizations in efforts to help them raise funds for their missions. We are able to do all this because of you, our members, donors, and sponsors. The community appreciates your role in making Northeast Wisconsin a better place to live, for all of our residents.

2014-2015 Annual Campaign Update and Thank You Every Garden needs water, soil and sunlight to grow and flourish. Green Bay Botanical Garden requires something more – the generosity and support of our community. On behalf of the Garden and our Board of Directors we extend our heartfelt thank you for supporting our Annual Campaign and joining us in making a difference in the lives of our visitors. This support will ensure continued care of our 20-plus acres of developed Gardens and enable all visitors to have a special place for celebrating and creating memories and traditions. Mother Nature’s most exciting adventure will continue!
Education Endowment Created in 2014 Green Bay Botanical Garden established an Education Endowment Fund last fall to ensure the sustainability of our educational programming here at the Garden. This is due to the generosity of Mike & Gloria Morgan, who wanted to honor the memory of their parents and other members of the Morgan and Macaluso families. Both lifelong educators, Mike and Gloria believe giving to a cause they believe in is the ultimate expression of their values. Their goal is to inspire others to support the Education Endowment, ensuring the children, family and adult education programming here at the Garden continues into the future. This leadership gift has already attracted another former educator to make a gift to the fund. Consideration of a gift of any size to the Education Endowment, whether it is now or in your estate plan, will ensure the education mission of Green Bay Botanical Garden continues well into the future. For more information, please contact Susan Garot, Executive Director, sgarot@gbbg.org, (920) 491-3691, ext. 102.
Tax deductible donations to the Annual Campaign are accepted throughout the year. To make a donation online visit www.gbbg.org or contact Cindy Berton at (920) 491-3691 ext. 104 to donate by phone.

Education at Your Garden Rob Zimmer, Garden and Nature Writer
Monarch Majesty at Your Garden By Rob Zimmer
Throughout the gardens in summer and fall, you will discover monarch butterflies dancing among the vibrant, colorful blooms. Green Bay Botanical Garden is an important stopover for monarch butterflies during their annual migration south. Because of our location at the southern end of the bay, as well as the irresistible living bouquet of precious nectar plants, monarchs gather here in large numbers during August and September. As you may know, monarch butterflies have seen a rapid decline in number over the past few decades, with the lowest wintering populations ever recorded in the mountains of central Mexico the past two winters. While the importance of providing milkweed as a host plant for monarch caterpillars is well known, the added importance of providing late summer nectar plants is just as vital, as this will sustain the butterflies on their long journey south to Mexico. To help these regal butterflies, consider planting a few late-summer bloomers in your yard and garden this year. Stroll throughout the many gardens here and you will discover a wide variety of nectar plants perfect for welcoming monarchs on their summer journeys. The many species of milkweed are an obvious choice, providing not only nectar for adult monarchs, but precious food for monarch caterpillars, which will feed upon nothing else.
Orange milkweed, often labeled as “butterfly weed,” is the perfect choice for those who dislike the taller, “weedier” nature of common milkweed. Orange milkweed also blooms later into the season then other varieties. Asters are among the most important garden plants for monarchs and other butterflies. Available in many beautiful colors, ranging from pure white to blue to the rich purple of New England aster, these plants offer a bouquet of daisy-like blooms, rich in nectar and perfect for monarchs on the move. You will find a stunning array of spectacular zinnias in full bloom during summer and fall as well. Zinnias are another important source of food for migrating monarchs. Other late-blooming annuals such as cosmos, tall verbena and marigolds offer a rich food source as well. Joe-pye weed, as well as its colorful relative, ironweed, are spectacular perennials that serve as monarch magnets during summer and fall. Other important perennial nectar sources include the many different varieties of liatris, sedum, purple coneflower, torch lily, goldenrods, as well as the many species of wild prairie sunflowers, such as prairie dock, compass plant, cup plant and others. Retailing, Retiring and Rentals at Your Garden Patti Hitzler, Gift Shop Manager
See What’s New at our WPS Trellis Gift Shop! Come find the fairies as they flit from one spot to another in the WPS Trellis Gift Shop. Are they in one of their houses? Are they possibly hiding under the bridge, resting their toes in a pond, riding a shiny red bike... or do we dare look in the outhouse?! Oh wait, I see one resting on a bench in the shade of an apple tree. Tiny fairies are hugely popular again this year, if you don’t have a special spot in your garden, it’s time to start!
Fred Parish - Board Member Since 1997 Fred Parish has decided it’s time for him to retire from board service. He came on the board in 1995, went off for a year (2006) and came back on in 2007. He’s done a lot for the Garden, including providing in-kind architectural/engineering services for the Jenquine Pavilion, Schneider Education Center, and Stumpf Hobbit House. Fred promises to stay active as a member and volunteer. Thank you, Fred!
