t generally takes five years to earn a black belt in karate. Aspiring students endure an eight-hour fitness test followed by hours of take downs, weapon disarms and board breaks. Andrea Sorensen, founder and CEO of the revolutionary marketing platform Liiingo, was the only adult in a class with her son when she started working on her black belt. She wanted to be an example, while challenging herself out of her comfort zone. “It was humbling to train with my son’s class. If you can fight a bunch of sixteen-year-old red belts, you are well prepared to be an entrepreneur,” Sorensen laughs. For Amy Gile, cofounder of the unique
“JUST LIKE PLAYERS MOVING QUICKLY ON THE ICE, YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO ANTICIPATE AND STRATEGIZE YOUR POSITION TO BEST SERVE YOUR CUSTOMERS AND ULTIMATELY SCORE A HUGE GOAL FOR YOUR BUSINESS.” - Janene Ellefson, Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships at Silverdraft
supercomputing firm Silverdraft, she learned discipline and perseverance while getting her black belt. “Business is tough and you need to be ready for whatever scenarios get thrown your way. You can’t be afraid to push through when things get really hard. The ability to breath, have patience, and stay calm also comes in handy!” Janene Ellefson and Jess Fuhrman first bonded behind the glass nearly 20 years ago. Both women are captains in the men’s hockey league at what is now called the Idaho Central Arena. Their many years on the ice taught them when to go hard against an opponent to win the puck, and to skate with tenacity and heart to uplift the team. Fuhrman, Vice President of Business Development at Liiingo, found her tribe in the hockey community. “We are adrenaline junkies. Anyone who likes to fly around on knives, carrying sticks and slapping hard chunks of rubber at each other must be a little crazy, or very calculated risk takers!” Lessons from the ice translate seamlessly into both their professional experience. “In business you need to be okay with changing on the fly and improvising,” explains Ellefson, the Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships at Silverdraft. “Just like players moving quickly on the ice, you need to be able to anticipate and strategize your position to best serve your customers and ultimately score a huge goal for your business.” These four women are Idaho business leaders, mothers, and athletes, uniquely bonded by their tenacious desire to push limits, and translate those skills into their business endeavors. A force to be reckoned with on the ice and on the mat, Andrea Sorensen, Jess Fuhrman, Janene Ellefson and Amy Gile are the face of female leadership in the Boise tech scene. As if Boise wasn’t already on the hot list, this pandemic has exposed just how desirable it is to live here. Women are critical to the growing state’s tech ecosystem, and Silverdraft and Liiingo are on the cutting edge of empowering people's experience through disruptive technology. Disruptive technology significantly alters how businesses operate and monetize by using a completely out of the box, innovative approach. Imagine you are opening a bottle of red wine amongst friends on your back patio. Looking over the bottle for a description of the wine, you notice a QR code with a clever call to action: “See where your grapes come from” and “Meet your winemaker.” With one tap you scan the colorful code and are immediately taken to a custom app to read tasting notes, videos and images of the winery, along with stories. Your friend explores another bottle’s QR code and the evening becomes an inspiring adventure learning about bold wine makers and their craft. 11

The problem that Liiingo has cracked the code on, is “THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION IS A eliminating sending customers DELICATE COLLABORATION OF to marketing platforms such as SOFTWARE, GAME ENGINES, google, Facebook, or another CAMERAS, AND OTHER app the customer is forced to download. “We are targeting COMPONENTS COMING a problem not an industry,” TOGETHER TO PERFORM explains Fuhrman. “The FLAWLESSLY.” problem is you can’t always be with your customer when they need information or have questions, Covid has even further reduced your ability to be with your audience.” Silverdraft is a premiere visualization solutions company that is crafted around proprietary computing hardware, software and services. Silverdraft solutions are powering the Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Visual FX, and Artificial Intelligence revolution. Gile got her start in Media and Entertainment as an actor and producer. “I studied the workflow and quickly realized that artists were hindered by technology. I knew there was a better way and if we could speed up the workflow than we could save time and money in production costs and spur creativity.” Virtual production is essentially a green screen replacement and actors perform in front of large LED walls that project content like scenes or landscape. “The entire production is a delicate collaboration of software, game engines, cameras, and other components coming together to perform flawlessly,” explains Ellefson. “The engine powering it all is Silverdraft computing. Without high performance computing bringing those elements together the entire production fails.” Hollywood was just the beginning for Silverdraft. “We’ve done things like power Madonna’s Augmented Reality performance at billboard music awards in 2019. Most recently our computer made it possible to put virtual fans in the stands with Fox Sports and MLB,” shares Ellefson. “We also enable the car industry to design and build complete cars in virtual reality well before they are even physically built.” Not only are these women moving the Boise tech scene forward, they are investing in women as tech leaders. Fuhrman is the founding director of an organization (in partnership with the Idaho Technology Council and The Girl Scouts of Idaho) called iWIT (Idaho Women in Technology). “We leverage our leadership and influence to increase support for women led initiatives and organizations. Our goals are to keep more female and minority technology talent in Idaho by organically growing the talent pool through our mentorship ladder for tech professionals down to 4th graders. We exist to empower individuals to understand they can be successful leaders and remove barriers to career pathways currently underserved by women." Above her desk, Sorensen displays the first board she broke in her black belt training as a reminder to look past the goal, and to not pull back. “If you aim for the board, you won’t break it. And you’ll hurt your hand. If you aim past the board, then you have the momentum to succeed.” Andrea Sorensen, Jess Fuhrman, Janene Ellefson and Amy Gile embody the vision, commitment to community, and tenacity that will lead and innovative the tech scene in and beyond Boise. ¢

uccess comes to the dedicated, the determined, the steadfast and strongwilled. For Sting Ray Robb, he is the definition of all of that and more. Devoted to his family, his faith, and the sport of racing, Sting Ray, (and yes, that’s his real name) has been on the tracks since his was a small boy. “By the time I was 14, I'd raced everything from go-karts, shifter karts, Corvettes, K&N ProSeries Nascars, Dirt Modified cars, and open-wheel Formula cars all across the US and in 11 foreign countries. I ultimately found that my heart was in racing the open wheel formula cars which led me to the Road to Indy and this direct path to IndyCar,” Sting Ray shared with us. Sting Ray was recently crowned the title of Indy Pro 2000 Champion, which comes with a full-season contract and a scholarship for future races! Sting Ray is incredibly humble, and even during our interview, he made it clear that he had not yet won the Indy Pro champion title, and then proceeded to win the race just over a week later! Congratulations Sting Ray, way to represent Idaho! “My family has been very supportive of my desire to race from the beginning. My parents and grandparents have traveled with me, prayed and cheered for me at nearly every race so far. I believe that their amazing support has been key to my many successes and believe without them and the prayer and support of so many others, I would not be here experiencing this incredible opportunity. I will continue to trust that God's plan is at work in my daily journey.” Sting Ray knows the value of hard work and plans to finish off this season strong and continue to drive toward his dreams, “Once we enter the off-season I plan to participate in test sessions in the Indy Lights cars. I'll be working to prepare myself both mentally and physically for the upcoming season to insure I'm fully prepared. Of course, I've got to work and earn some money as well so I'll be working during the off-season as well.” And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the fact that even while spending so much time traveling, racing, and practicing, Sting Ray graduated a year early from high school with a 4.2 GPA,

while serving as class president, FFA officer, and as a leader in his church group. Talk about dedication! He also pointed out that Idaho doesn’t have any formula open-wheel tracks anywhere in the state, so he has spent thousands of hours traveling by both car and plane to various locations where he practices and races. But at only 18 years old, and with all his many accomplishments under his belt, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sting Ray Robb Formula Open-Wheel Track opening up in Idaho sometime during his career! ¢ When Sting Ray isn’t on the tracks (or driving to the tracks), he is soaking up the true Idaho lifestyle in our beautiful expanses of nature—mountain biking, hunting, fishing, golfing, and skiing. COMMUNITY OF CHOICE, COMMUNITY OF HEART
Creating the Kula Connection BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
Kula – Sanskrit for community of choice or heart Idaho husband and wife business duo, Michelle and Spencer Russell, were driven to bring the joy and lifestyle of healthy eating to the Gem State and beyond, simply by living through their own experiences. “Spencer and I were inspired by our personal transformations and by the irrefutable science behind lifestyle medicine and plant-based food. Spencer and I each lost 80 pounds. I transitioned from 7-12 daily prescription medications to none. During the course of my own transformation I studied and studied. I continue to study lifestyle medicine, positive psychology, mindfulness, and food's effect on mood, daily, in hopes of being able 20
to help others feel their best,” shared Michelle. The Kula Connection offers healthy-option dinner boxes, delicious dairy-alternative cashew cheeses, brownies, gourmet cashew cheesecakes, pancake mixes, and a whole array of tasty treats that are actually good for you. It was hard for us to believe it too when we saw how amazing the Bill Dill “cheese” spread looked! “The community support for Kula remains the greatest experience. When we first started it was in West Side drive-in's commissary kitchen with Chef Lou Aaron. My best friend and my grown up kids dedicated 100's of hours to get us going. When we started to sell at Boise's
Farmer's Market volunteers rallied around us. Dozens of people gave freely of their time and talents. The community in Boise really willed Kula into being and it is their support that keeps us going.” In addition to their incredible food offerings, Kula also provides workshops and coaching opportunities for those looking to dive further into a healthier lifestyle, or simply looking to incorporate wellness into their day-to-day lives. Their coaching options are geared toward selfempowerment and strength reinforcement. “You are the expert in navigating your own life, based upon personal preferences and past experiences. We provide the structure of the session and serve as a collaborative partner,” Spencer indicates on their website. They aspire to help you navigate life’s hurdles in a way that elevates the body and mind beyond stress. Michelle and Spencer are excited to keep the Kula momentum going and look forward to the future. “Kula is continuing to grow and respond to what's happening in our community and our world. Everything we make is purposefully engineered to actively help fortify your health, boost your immunity and make you feel better. I am creating new products constantly and we are increasing our community outreach through Kula Dudes, a yoga program for men. I have a cookbook coming out in November called, Just Mushrooms, which I am super excited about as I believe mushrooms are a key to a more sustainable future and better health. We look forward to continuing to provide plant-based and lifestyle alternatives in our community.” ¢

KIWI SHAKE AND BAKE Couple Brings New Zealand Flare to Downtown Boise BY HUNTER LEVY PHOTOGRAPHY HEATHER JAMES
After selling their iron roofing business in New Zealand, Chris and Katie Munro saw an opportunity. They had traveled to Boise multiple times over the years, visiting from across the ocean to compete in boat races. They loved Boise—the people, the mountains, the culture—but could they really come all the way across the world to Boise, Idaho to open a restaurant? “We just thought: Let’s do it,” said Katie. Kiwi Shake and Bake is a café-style restaurant in downtown Boise dishing out the only New Zealand food around. From meat pies to specialty, homemade pastries, Kiwi Shake and Bake offers a variety of New Zealand favorites Getting to that point, however, took some effort. “When we first got here, we spent months going around trying to source ingredients that worked,” said Chris. “We brought a baker over from New Zealand that had been baking for 54 years. He retired at 70 to come help us. He tried making all of his recipes, but on the first day he said if there was a plane going back to New Zealand, he was on it.” “The ingredients were so full of sugar that he couldn’t get it to do what he needed it to do,” explained Katie. In addition to the food, customers looking for a caffeine jolt can try a long black, a style of coffee commonly found in Australia and New Zealand where a double-shot of espresso is poured over hot water. Customers seeking something more relaxing can sample one of the various New Zealand beers on tap. 22
“
F OR CHRIS AND K ATIE, IDAHO REMINDS THEM OF HOME. “A LOT OF SIMIL ARITIES IN IDAHO. WE’ VE GOT LOTS OF MOUNTAINS, SKIING, AND MOUNTAIN BIKING.
Kiwi Shake and Bake also acts as a local meeting place, with trivia competitions on Monday and Thursday evenings. Boasting sky high, modern walls and spacious indoor as well as outdoor seating areas, Kiwi Shake and Bake is the perfect location to meet with friends while remaining socially distant. For some of their customers, visiting Kiwi Shake and Bake is about exploration. “Everybody is so open to trying new things here,” said Katie. “They’re not scared to try something new, if it’s a new cuisine or a new culture of food.”
For Chris and Katie, Idaho reminds them of home. “A lot of similarities in Idaho. We’ve got lots of mountains, skiing, and mountain biking. Lots of year-round activities,” said Chris. “That’s part of the reason we like it here. It’s a close to New Zealand as we’ve seen over here.” Customers have been steadily coming back, but like most independent restaurants, Kiwi Shake and Bake was hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis. The parking lot behind the restaurant that used to be filled with downtown workers has been mostly open. Another major barrier they faced was difficulty receiving government support. “The financial assistance has been lackluster. Everything seems to be snapped up by companies that really don’t need it, or that aren’t impacted. They seem to be getting the financial support, while small businesses get left out. We’re not citizens so we get overlooked on most things.” Chris and Katie were the very first New Zealanders to receive E-2 visas, a classification of visa given to nationals from “Treaty Countries” that invest capital into a U.S. business. Even with the economic hit of the crisis and a lack of governmental help due to their nationality, Chris and Katie have remained positive. “I think we got to evolve with the situation. It’s slowly getting better,” said Chris. “If we can get through it, we’ll be so much better for it,” added Katie. ¢
A HANDMADE HOLIDAY EVENT Handmade Idaho goes brick and mortar! Challenging years call for creative ideas. Handmade Idaho started by Boise resident Angela Stewart is typically planning their annual holiday event at El Korah Shrine which strives to bring opportunities for Idaho artists and makers to sell their products. However, 2020 brought new challenges for the organization and the event had to be cancelled due to safety concerns for large events. Understanding this but still wanting to create an opportunity for Idaho artists & makers to have a venue to sell their goods, Angela started brainstorming. She decided to take a leap of faith and rent an empty storefront at the Village in Meridian for the holidays. Handmade Idaho selected over 50 Idaho based artists, makers and artisan food producers to create a safe, all local boutique with gifts for everyone on your list. Handmade Idaho will also have an online market and offer curbside pickup. Another unique offering this year will be their curated gift boxes which can be shipped to anywhere, they can even personalize the card and send it directly to the recipient! You can find Handmade Idaho at 3693 E Longwing Lane #120, Meridian, ID 83642 (around the corner from the Yard House). The shop will be open 7 days a week starting Black Friday (November 27th) through December 28th, closed on Christmas Day. You will find many of your favorite local makers and some new ones from around Idaho including Banana Ink, Lit & Co, Wear Boise, Ladybug Press and more! You can find out more about Handmade Idaho and their artisans & makers through their website: www. handmadeidaho.com

HUGH HARTMAN WRITING IDAHO HISTORY See Boise Through Hugh-Colored Glasses BY JAMIE HODGES PHOTOGRAPHY HEATHER JAMES
The next time you stroll downtown Boise sidewalks or through the valley’s residential and commercial pockets, try this: Peel back the modern-day layers of this ever-growing city to wander way back in time. Search for bits of deep history. Find Boise’s original bones and birthmarks. Uncover the handiwork of hard-working homesteaders who called this place home 150 years ago. For Hugh Hartman, whose great-grandchildren are seventh-generation Idahoans, viewing the landscape around him with a what-once-was lens is altogether natural. “I started doing genealogy at 9, about 80 years ago, and started writing history 60 years or so ago,” said Hartman, who has added more than 18,000 people to his lineage traced back far before his Idaho roots to the mid-1300s and who continues to research and write about Idaho history. “My family has been here since ’83 – and by that, I mean 1883. In fact, I only live about a mile from where my great grand-dad homesteaded.” Mindfully putting fingertips to two typewriters in the late 1980s for five years before sending his work to print, Hartman published, “The Founding Fathers of Boise, 1863-1875” to, as the preface reads, “tell of the hardships, of the togetherness, of the gaiety, of the bravery and everyday living of these proud pioneers.” Over many decades, the 148 -page book that features dozens of original hand-sketched Hartman illustrations and more than 80 biographies of Boise’s earliest settlers made its way into schoolrooms, history museums 24
and in the hands of thousands of people all over the world. “You wouldn’t believe what I’ve dug out, like John McClellan, the first one to bring chickens to Boise. Dr. Thompson, who was my mother’s twin sister’s father-in-law’s father,” he said quickly once and slowly the second time, understanding the comical complexity, “was the first doctor in Boise. I think readers appreciate it because it’s so detailed. It’s not a fancy romance novel, that’s for sure.” Yet you can find stories of love. “A family came through headed to Oregon, and their 21-yearold daughter had typhoid fever,” Hartman said. “They figured she’d be dead in two days. They left her with Dr. Thompson and headed west. Dr. Thompson brought her back to health and ended up marrying her and had six children, so there’s good-ole’ true-to-life stories in there. And sometimes people would come through.” This all happened a stone’s throw from today’s Payette Brewing on River Street. Approaching 90 in 2021 – “I’m about 30 years or so younger than Idaho,” he says – his historical story-telling gumption rolls on. Hartman said, “I’m writing the history of Barber, Idaho,” a place now known by locals as a popular tubing put-in site along the Boise River. “Barber, Idaho, was a mill town. There was a lumber mill. I had an uncle who worked in the general store. I had an uncle who was a pond monkey; he used to run across the logs in the pond to direct them and never got wet. Another uncle furnished the meat for the store.” So, while most hear “Barber Park” and imagine sun-soaked river floaters, Hartman sees industry, family, hard work and, of course, history. Next time you wander, put on Hugh-colored glasses to discover Boise in its infancy hiding in plain sight. Don’t overlook names of popular arteries like Curtis Road, Ridenbaugh Street and Morris Hill named after early residents. When struck by the beauty of Warm Springs homes, search for stone hitching posts still firmly planted in the yards, but don’t forget that the earliest settlers made homes in caves and thatch huts. Explore Boise with a new, “old” lens, and when what you see leaves you curious, ask Hartman and his son who moderate the Facebook Group, “History of Boise, Idaho, from 1863,” which currently boasts more than 17,000 followers, a number that grows daily. “I had someone this morning who wanted to know about Thomas Maxwell,” Hartman said. “Well, I found him.” Of course you did, Hugh Hartman. And we can’t wait to hear all about it. ¢

DOWNTOWN
DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
Pepper Design Co.
Kate Chudy of Pepper Design Co. Brings Elevated and Playful Design to Downtown Boutique BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY GABE BORDER AND KELSEY PARFITT
Kate Chudy created local design firm, Pepper Design Co. in 2016. Born and raised in Boise, she began her design career in Las Vegas with the celebrated Roger Thomas and award-winning Wynn Resorts, spending six years working on high-end residential and hospitality projects. She furthered her experience in Boston, leading concept development on high profile commercial ventures and later moved on to manage exclusive residential commissions throughout New England. Returning to her hometown two years ago, Kate has enjoyed bringing her extensive knowledge and experience back to Boise, “Boise is now the city I wanted it to be while I was growing up. It is also becoming more diverse, so naturally interior design is evolving with that,” she said. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest and New England Home. Shawna Loveland, owner of Boise’s newest maternity and baby boutique, Baby Blues & Pink, reached out to Kate for guidance in creating the perfect space for her store. Kate explained, “I met Shawna for coffee about a year before we started the design process. She spoke of her long-time goal of opening a premium boutique. She dreamed of creating a warm, welcoming space for mothers and babies, and I immediately fell in love with her vision and energy”. They spent the next few months searching for the perfect venue, which ended up being the Owyhee building facing Main Street. 26
At the start of any project, Kate considers the story she wants the space to tell. The Owyhee venue began with some great key features including natural light and big windows. In order for the space to be functional and what they envisioned; Kate built upon those elements. She framed the interior with arched niche displays, designed custom light fixtures to span the entry, added a generous fitting room with thoughtful toys to keep toddlers entertained and created a beautiful point of sale counter that is both functional as well as creates a strong design component that helps to anchor the space. At Baby Blues & Pink, everything has a soft edge. The space is inviting, warm and playful. “So much of my inspiration for this boutique came from Shawna’s illuminating and gentle dynamism, as well as envisioning a space I would want to bring my toddler to, or a friend expecting her own little one,” said Kate. Kate spoke of the need for a trusting and cohesive relationship between client and the designer. “The most successful projects are those where the client fully trusts their design team and allows them to utilize their professional creativity to bring a vision to life.” Wright Brothers Construction took the time to understand and execute the level of detail and finish that Kate was hoping to achieve, “With Boise booming in new construction and remodels, it’s imperative to have a team that doesn’t want to rush through the specifics or cut back on quality,” she added. Pepper Design Co. is located on Grove Street in a collaborative office space shared with Maren Baker Design and Kasey Fitzgerald Design. The designers’ collective network of professionals is comprised of architects, designers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists, artisans and talented makers who share the same vision for a cooperative work environment and connected community. “Not every designer wants to share resources and ideas. I’ve lived in bigger cities where the design communities weren’t so friendly, and it felt lonely on my own. I’m thankful to have found my community in Boise to share ideas with; I feel supported here.” Kate’s approach to every project is unique, flexible and responsive. Her designs often incorporate vintage, new and custom pieces, layering old and new, and integrating a healthy dose of color and texture. Fresh and accessible, Kate and Pepper Design Co. can help with everything from new build construction to full-scale remodels, custom furniture design, full house furnishings and simple room refreshes. ¢

GET READY TO PAINT THE TOWN Color Boise, A Boise Coloring Book BY JAMIE HODGES PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLEE MILLER
28
When you think of Boise, what colors fill the picture in your mind? Wait. Better yet, imagine popping the lid off a new box of crayons. The perfectly sharpened tips arranged row after row wait for their singlemost import task – to spark creativity. Think of which ones you pull out first to fill in the landscape just the way you see it. Maybe you choose carnation pink and dandelion for the morning skies behind the iconic Table Rock Cross. Perhaps you pull apricot for the foothills and indigo for the for the Boise Ridge mountains behind them. Is that the Boise you know? Now there’s a way to color Boise any way your technicolor heart desires. Local artist Shelley Hodges has dozens of canvases waiting for everyone. “Color Boise: A Boise Coloring Book” is the inspiration of Hodges, a mother of two young children, both of whom are the source of her accidental inspiration for each of the three-dozen-plus images. “The best ideas always happen when you’re not planning on it,” Hodges said. “When Sarah was a baby, I was literally drawing pictures for Jacob to color, to give him something to do, when the idea came to me. I did a few drawings, and I thought it would be fun.” But it wasn’t until months later that she brought the idea to stores and homes and the imaginations of children and grownups. In January, Hodges mentioned the idea to college friends during a vacation with them to her birth state of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Thrilled with the idea, Hodges’ friends carted her to to the store to get a stylus for her tablet. By the time the wheels touched down back at the Boise airport, Hodges had created 20 drawings for Color Boise. “All of these ideas had been brewing, and they just poured out on that trip,” Hodges said. “And it just continues.” In a year when most families find themselves at home more than ever, she hopes bringing bits of the city that’s familiar and fond to so many of us to inside helps make life a little brighter, Hodges said. “All these parents and kids I knew were couped up, so I dropped off 70 or so coloring books to families of first responders and others I knew,” said Hodges, who published the first edition of the book in March and continues to add pages as more ideas come to life. Images include families sledding on Simplot Hill, paddle boarding at Lucky Peak and skiing Bogus Basin. Other pages feature iconic landmarks such as the Egyptian Theatre, Boise Depot and the slide at Jack’s Urban Meeting Place ( JUMP). “All of those things in the book are things my family loves to do or places we’ve been,” Hodges said. As the months roll on, more and more local shops offer the coloring book for purchase, including Guru Donuts, Coffee Supply and Co, Mixed Greens, Hyde Park Mercantile, Tazikis and Flying M Coffee House. Out-of-towners can buy Color Boise at amazon.com. “The community of local small business blows my mind. Everyone has been so supportive while I’m figuring out the ropes,” said Hodges, who has been doing commission paintings for 20 years. “And to meet so many people through it all has been an unexpected blessing.” Like any artist, Hodges’ mind continues to think of new ideas for future projects. And while this mother and artist dreams up new images and the lines that will create them, it’s entirely up to you on the colors you choose to fill them all in. ¢

CREATIVE GREEN WALLS A Unique, Natural Art Form BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY HEATHER JAMES
The natural and aesthetic beauty of plants has an almost magical quality. Perhaps that is why we are so drawn to the outdoors, and compelled to bring the outdoors closer to home with house plants, flowers, and gardens. A simple house plant has been proven to reduce stress and muscle tension, lower blood pressure, boost healing, and create an overall ambiance of wellness and relaxation in the home. Not to mention, they provide fresh oxygen for the environment. For all these reasons and more, Megan Carnahan has dove headfirst into a unique business model: Creative Green Walls. 30
“I have always enjoyed creating beautiful spaces from blank canvases. Interior design is something that I have been doing for many years. But it was actually during a trip to San Francisco where I saw my first living wall,” Megan said. “I was inspired. I did research and found a company in San Diego that trained me on how to create and install living walls with their system.” Living walls, as described on Megan’s website, are: walls filled with living plants and flowers providing a fresh feel without taking up excess floor space. Using the GrowUp Greenwall system, Creative Green Walls can create a self-watering, well-contained living plant wall system. “I feel privileged to be able to design, create, install, and maintain these living works of art. Each piece of art I create will always have a heart in it somewhere. This symbolizes giving back. The pieces naturally give back to the environment that it is in.” And just like her living walls, Megan gives back as well. “I donate a percentage of each project to support causes in our community.” Creative Green Walls can build living or dried moss walls or art pieces using Reindeer Moss, Bun Moss, and Sheet Moss. Megan has also recently expanded her business to include preserved moss art pieces and faux plant art. Her latest piece can be found at Heritage Hop Haus in Meridian, which will be her largest one to date! She’s excited to see the piece come together. “It has modern elements that I haven’t worked with before.” ¢ If you’re interested in seeing some of Megan’s other work, her walls and art can be found at Source Meditation Studio, Lunatic Fringe Salon, and Dash Aerial Yoga, all located in Boise. For more information on living walls, visit creativegreenwalls.com. There you can see a digital gallery of previous projects and learn more about how to get a Creative Green Wall in your home, office, restaurant, studio, or café!

JOULE CASE Passionate About Power—For All BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS
PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON
Our busy world is full of noise. The honk ing and rushing of traff ic, the non-stop whir of plugged in electronics, horns, sirens, beeps, and nonstop commotion. The last thing anyone needs is the grrrglugggglugrrglugg of a noisy power generator. But, the world needs power, and in times of tumult, the world needs backup power. Enter: The Joule Case. The business duo behind the Joule Case met during their time at the University of Idaho. James Wagoner and Alex Livingston got to know one another during their freshmen year Intro to Mechanical Engineering course and bonded over shared interests in biking, backpacking, and music festivals. Their combined knowledge and expertise forms the perfect pairing. Alex handles product development, on both the software and hardware levels, while James manages resources, the company’s longterm vision, and implementation. What each of them quickly realized during their time together is that there just wasn’t enough options for sustainable power. They started with an attempt to improve the design of electric cars, hoping to make them more feasible and appealing to the US market. Their design was “simple,” in engineering terms, but is described on their website as this: “The concept was a simple one, different vehicles require different units of energy, if the energy unit was standardized then vehicles could exchange spent units for fresh ones, eliminating the whole waiting to charge issue.” And the Joule Case has continued to evolve from there. Based in Garden City, the pair has been great success with their energy concept and hopes to expand the product into a variety of other uses in the future. And for us without the engineering backgrounds, here is a quick overview of their currently available products. 32

TOOTH TRUTHS℠ - Heather A. Brown, RDH, MPH -
Dental Benefits Let’s talk about dental benefits. Whether you’re an employer or an employee, dental benefits are important to you; in the long run they will save you time and money. Most people in this country receive dental benefits through their employer and here’s why I believe dental benefits are important to have—and use—prevention. Studies have shown that people with dental benefits go to the dentist 78% more often. That doesn’t seem noteworthy when you already go to the dentist at least twice a year, but here’s why going to the dentist every six months (or more if needed) is beneficial: dental disease is almost 100% preventable which is why most dental benefit plans fully cover preventive services like exams and cleanings. Good oral health goes hand in hand with good overall health. If you’re an employer, providing dental benefits for your employees is more than a perk for them, it’s an investment in your team. Using their dental benefits for regular preventive services, as well as being able to get any other dental issues taken care of quickly if and when they arise, helps keep your employees healthy and productive. But you need to encourage them to take advantage of those dental benefits. After all, more than 164 million work hours are lost due to dental issues every year. If you’re an employee with dental benefits, use them! Nothing is as important as your health so use those dental benefits to see your dentist regularly. And here’s something else many people may not know: about 120 diseases, including diabetes and kidney disease, can be detected in the mouth. While using your dental benefits for regular checkups, your dentist can also evaluate the health of your mouth which is about more than a healthy smile, it’s about a healthier you. Let’s recap! If you’re an employer, a dental benefits package can help attract talented people to your business, and help keep them healthy and productive. If you’re an employee with dental benefits, using them will save you money and time in the long run by preventing bigger issues, or maybe catching them early on. Dental benefits are a winning scenario for everyone, but the key is to use them! Remember, good oral health leads to good overall health.
