Collisions and Creation BOISE WOMEN FUELLING TECH AND FILLING NEEDS

Boise provides sanctuary and growth to such a diverse population of entrepreneurs and doers. We’ve been privileged to see womenled ventures evolve into powerhouses of their respective industries, find growth from personal hardships, and identify innovative solutions that serve the greater good of our community and the world at large. In this edition of ‘Meet the Mentor’, we’ll visit three remarkable women taking Idaho by storm with their brilliant impact and harmonious collision of personal and professional development. Heather Messenger, Alexis Rankin, and Trillitye Paullin (Trill), all participate in VentureCapital.org’s (VCO) powerful, yet deceptively simple, collaborative mentoring model. I’ve been privileged with a ringside seat to see the influence, the interaction, and ultimately the impact these female entrepreneurs have established. The recent VCO Annual Investors Choice Conference shed light into the innate skill housed in these professionals and the underlying emphasis they all have on growth, relationship building, and idea sharing.

Heather Messenger > Mentor Extraordinaire One person who is continually teaching and sharing about mentoring is biotech wizard, Heather Messenger. We collided via VCO, where she mentored Alexis and Trill. Heather has worked in all the usual suspect tech hubs, NYC, Silicon Valley, Research Triangle, etc. but she found Boise to be home. Watching her work with entrepreneurs like Alexis and Trill was eye-opening. As Heather put it, “Don't get me wrong, landing in a place that spoke to me 'as home' and the places in which I grew my career expanded my thinking and capabilities. But they also taught me what not to do; what I didn't want to be. I wanted to be the kind of person that 'I' would want to work with.” With all of VCO’s great mentors, she is definitely someone anyone would want to work with. You’re sure to learn something in every conversation. Heather’s also perfect for Boise because she sees how our efforts can be “cooperative, valued, and shared - this is how we operate.” This is why she loves what she is able to do

with eager and innovative entrepreneurs like Trill and Alexis. The future is truly, truly bright for women in tech in Boise and around the world. Supportive, collaborative, mentorship and information sharing is the fulcrum of personal and professional development. When problems arise, the collision and synchronicity of solutions and people creates waves of impact that are felt everywhere.

Alexis Rankin > Chillow

Heather Messenger

Alexis Rankin had her “aha” moment created from a “oh, bleeping no” moment. Her story starts with a young college-age woman who comes back from vacation to find that her roommate had run off to Vegas with the rent money, leaving only an eviction notice. The frustration of spending even more money to exit one rental and find another was capped by the question, ‘how do I find a trustworthy roommate?’ As Alexis puts it, “It’s hard enough searching for a home, but trying to find a real connection when you’re relying on archaic systems like Craigslist can make you can feel lost and uncomfortable. It really lacks the personal factor that’s key for many people when they’re looking for a new person to share their home with.” For most, the only option is Craigslist. Why isn’t there a way to review, rank and endorse roommates? Finding roommates is hard enough, finding the right one can feel impossible. Chillow (alexis@chillowco.com) is the answer and is on track to revolutionize the shared housing market.” When you see a need, it’s logical to fill that need. One part of what makes this venture impactful and powerful, is how extended its reach is. In normal lean startup customer discovery, there are traditionally 100 interviews with potential customers. Chillow completed 500. ‘Only’ 98% were interested, with most saying they’d pay for it - even if they were currently happy with their roommates.

Trillitye Paullin > Free to Feed Alexis Rankin

Trillitye Paullin (Trill)

Trill suggested our “collision” theme. She is ex-military, has a PhD in molecular biology, and has a work history spanning cancer research, a career at Darigold, and eventually allergen detection. Her leap to entrepreneurship came from painful personal collision - two highly foodallergic children. What could be more frustrating to an expert biologist than experiencing daily, even hourly, the awfulness of not being able to breastfeed because of unknown ingested allergens? Because of her experience, Trill is developing test mechanisms so mothers can detect food allergens in breast milk, plus technology to support them through the process. Up to 25% of babies and mothers are subject to the learning curve that comes along with motherhood and allergen detection and prevention. The only way to do this the right way? Launch a new venture, Free to Feed. (www. freetofeed.com) Being an entrepreneur empowers her to continue learning and innovating. Moreover, Dr. Paullin points out, “vital mentors such as Heather Messenger have helped me close entrepreneurial knowledge gaps. Heather’s expertise and willingness to be a guide has been instrumental in Free to Feed's progress over the past several months. I am incredibly appreciative of the time others have taken to help my journey and mission.” Talk about turning an awful experience into a way to help millions. 11

Sometimes watching live performances of my favorite bands gets me inspired to write. -THOMAS (VOCALS/GUITAR)

Treefort Music Fest 2020 It’s that funky and fantastic time of year again—Treefort Music Fest takes over the streets of downtown Boise. If we could all be in multiple places at once, we’d have a much better chance of being able to catch all of the amazing musicians that will be performing this year; not to mention attend every YogaFort, FoodFort, and StoryFort that we possibly could! But as we are all limited to being in one place at a time, you should make the most of your Treefort 2020 experience by stepping inside the minds of these remarkable local artists.

This rock band is a cross between The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. They started in May 2017 with Hayden (bass) and Cameron (drums) scouring the halls of their high school for a golden-voiced singer. They then found Thomas (vocals/guitar), who hails from Florida. “He was the melodic-catalyst that had the pipes to keep up with our jovial musical excitement,” Cameron said. The band has become a power trio ever since.

THE PHETS

All three of the band members are transplants to the Boise area. They absolutely love the state and feel lucky to call the Treasure Valley their home. “One of the most gratifying experiences we’ve had as a band is seeing young musicians sprout up and form bands of their own throughout our tenure of playing live around town. We do feel as though the music scene here is growing and are incredibly excited for what’s to come,” the band added. Some of the Phets’ favorite places to play gigs are Deathproof. Cofee or The Regal Beaver. They love the intimacy the venues provide as their audience can truly be as close as they want to be. On their days off, the group loves to hang out at The Record Exchange or grab a bite to eat at Pie Hole. When it comes to writing, The Phets have some interesting rituals. Thomas said, “Sometimes watching live performances of my favorite bands gets me inspired to write. It’s such a great reminder of why I love writing; to make something larger than life, a medium through which people can express themselves and let go.” Cameron opened up that before creating drumbeats, he first must play the guitar. “Oddly enough. I believe the guitar is one of the most emotionally expressive instruments out there. The guitar has always been so therapeutic for me and really gets the creative sauce marinating.”

ROSES ARE DEAD Most of the band got their start in music at a very young age. Dakota (bass) started playing the cello back in elementary school, moving to guitar when he was 17. He actually didn’t pick up the THE SEATOPIANS bass until he joined the metal band, Roses Are Dead. “I started playing guitar about, 11 years ago. Xander (guitar) got me into playing the instrument and I haven't been able to put it ROSES ARE DEAD down since,” shares guitar player, Stevin. Alex (vocals) started playing the piano when he was just six years old and moved to singing when he was 15. Weston (drums) started becoming a beast behind the kit in the 6th grade. The band opened up about a few rituals they do before they start writing and when they first wake up on a day of a show. Xander must organize his studio/house prior to writing. “I can't think clearly with clutter in my life. It helps me organize my thoughts. Music is order,” he said. Alex religiously carries a notebook with him that he writes down lyrics or rhythms that jump into his mind. And on the day of a show, “I like to put on some 80’s power ballad tunes to get me going,” Weston said. Stevin added, “I usually come up with ideas at work or after watching amazing musicians play, it can be so inspiring. It's like an itch that needs to be scratched and doesn't go away until I get home, record, and make my idea come to life.” You can regularly find the bandmates hanging out at their favorite haunts all over Boise. Dakota is a major fan of heading out to the foothills or Wildflour Bakery. After a performance, you’ll find Xander at the downtown Pie Hole. While Stevin concluded with, “I love going out to eat with my bandmates after practice. Some of my funniest memories are with them.”

THE WEARY TIMES

THE WEARY TIMES

My first guitar was actually a Harmony my parents ordered for me out of a JC Penney Catalog back in the 90’s. -RYAN (LEAD SINGER/GUITAR)

We sat down with, Ryan, the lead singer and guitarist for The Weary Times, a terrific blues band that will rock your soul. Ryan got his start playing guitar when he was 13 years old. “My first guitar was actually a Harmony my parents ordered for me out of a JC Penney Catalog back in the 90’s. I'm pretty sure I circled it in one of those big old things for a Christmas present one year.” Over the past several years, he has become more structured in the way he writes his music. “I'm usually working on 5-10 different song ideas at any given time. When I have a few hours set aside for writing, I'll usually try to spend a little time on each idea. Sometimes I can write a song in 20 minutes, sometimes I rework it a million different ways, for months, even years before it finally comes together,” Ryan shares. When he isn’t performing himself, you can usually catch Ryan enjoying live shows at venues like The Neurolux, Pengilly’s Saloon, and The Olympic!

THE SEATOPIANS Instrumental surf band The Seatopians, offered up a very unique backstory with their music. The band opened up about their true cause, they are here to conquer the land-dwellers by infiltrating our world in disguise of a band! When it comes to writing their music, they offer up a ritual to the almighty Megalon. After that they spend time writing and rewriting riffs, this cycle repeats until the song is done. If you are looking for a truly unique experience during Treefort make sure to check this band out! ¢ Treefort is March 25-29 downtown Boise. We’re looking for new and familiar faces to help out before and during the festival. For information on all things Treefort visit treefortmusicfest.com.

ASKA LOKAL New word-of-mouth referral app BY GILLIAN HILL PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON

Boise is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and locals who are happy to share their love of this community. When tourists or business travelers are in town, all they need to do is ask a local, and they’ll find out about a great restaurant, a fun bar, or the best place to go for a run the next morning. Mike Gibson has watched these strong community links and been frustrated that businesses don’t know who their Unknown VIPs are. “If a hotel front desk clerk is recommending Bodovino a handful of times each shift, those recommendations really add up. If you are the Bodovino manager, wouldn’t you love to know who is providing the value to your business, and thank them?” And so Gibson set out to do just that. Aska, the word of mouth referral app, has just launched and Boise businesses are looking forward to thanking those Unknown VIPS. Aska connects users who want to recommend their favorite businesses, with customers who are looking to try somewhere new. The customer will be given a special offer and the user will reap the reward too, with discounts or benefits after a number of referrals have been made, similar to a punch card you might get at a coffee shop to reward your loyalty after you’ve bought your 5th brew. Gibson told me that when he was interviewing local businesses to get a feel for how he could strengthen these community ties between businesses and their loyal followers, he spoke to a restaurant manager downtown who immediately got it. The manager told Gibson that over the period of 3 or 4 months, at least 70 people had come in who had been told about the place by ‘the car rental guy at the airport’. The manager would have loved to show some appreciation for all those referrals, but never found out who had been providing them. Unlike other national review websites, Aska’s number one priority is the community, and if he can find ways to strengthen the businesses within that community, and their links with their customers, then everyone in the community wins. Aska’s focus is on locally owned businesses in the Treasure Valley. Research suggests that for every $100 spent, $68 will stay in the community if it’s spent in a locally owned business, as opposed to $43 spent at a national chain. For Gibson, that’s reason enough to develop ways to encourage a community to support its local businesses. The app allows you to recommend almost any business or other type of service in the Treasure Valley. As well as the more common options like bars and restaurants, Gibson has added categories for places of interest and local non-profits. “After talking to not-for-profit owners, I 22

can really see the value they provide to our community. So we’re not charging to add non-profits to the app.” One of the many bonuses of referring through the app is the safety of not having to pass on your information by texting details to someone you’ve just met. The app will send a link to the customer directly, and the user who refers can add a note if they wish. “My wife loves an offmenu drink at a bar downtown and is always telling people about it. Now she can send a note with the referral, with the name of the drink so they can order it if they go in.” Local businesses can find paid advertising frustrating, not knowing what local ads might be working and what one’s aren’t. “As the app is used over time, we’ll be able to provide data to businesses on where their referrals are coming from, and when. This could be amazing business intelligence to help them identify their most common sources of referrals, and focus advertising on the places that really provide value. “Aska is like an online version of the bundle of business cards you pick up at an in-person networking event, be that a regular breakfast or a one off event. With the app, they are all available digitally in one place, which makes it easy to find them or to refer them on to someone else.” ¢ If you are a local business supporter, download the Aska app for free, select your favorite local businesses and start referring today. Local business owners, go to askalokal.com/business and create your customer referral program. For local non-profits, go to info@askalokal. com to be included on the app for free.

THE GIFT OF MINDFULNESS Space offers a place to find self and community, one breath at a time BY LIZA LONG PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON

One Monday evening after work, I found myself in an unexpected place: looking out from The Fidelity Building’s second-story window over one of the busiest sections of Eighth Street in downtown Boise. I had come to source meditation | space with a healthy curiosity about the benefits of meditation. What I found was an energy oasis in the center of the city, a place that promises to change the way people think. In a simple 30-minute guided meditation, I stepped out of quotidian anxiety and relaxed into lightness and love. “This place just wants to happen,” co-founder Susan Cole told me as we spoke after the meditation session. “You feel held here.” Cole and co-creator Marisa Weppner, who owns Sage Yoga & Wellness adjacent to the new studio, conceived the need for a community meditation space on a 2019 retreat in India. Their yoga practice had increasingly led them both to meditation and mindfulness. A third partner, Paul Graham, teaches organizational resilience to corporations, is an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, and has a keen interest in the science of stillness practices, including mitigating workplace stress. Together the team brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion to the new project. This simple, high ceilinged space is decorated in muted earth tones, a mandala mural on one wall, shelves bursting with plush sheepskins, locally sourced cork yoga mats, bolsters, pillows, eye masks, and other tools designed to help users achieve the ultimate interface of mind, body, and spirit. In the center of the mandala is a mirror, reminding those in the space to look within themselves for peace. 24

The meditation studio has given Cole a space where she can integrate her personal passion with her professional expertise. With extensive experience in marketing and technology, Cole currently works for Cisco Networks in Silicon Valley. She became involved with the Wisdom 2.0 conference in San Francisco, and the experience impacted her so deeply that she worked to bring an offshoot of the conference to JUMP in 2016. “Wisdom 2.0 Connect was held in London, New York, Tel Aviv, and Boise, Idaho,” she said. “The Boise conference sold out.” As Cole and I chatted about her experiences, Weppner stopped by. “We saw the studio as a place for people to find peace,” Weppner told me. “There are plenty of mindfulness apps, but it’s not the same as being in collective community with a guide in real time. There’s a special energy here.” Weppner wrote the relaxing guided yoga nidra meditation that I experienced, encouraging participants to go inward and examine every part of their bodies. The 30-minute journey began with the simple phrase: “Welcome home.” Open since December 31, 2019, source meditation | space already has a full schedule, with 25 instructors and 20 volunteers. Classes include guided meditations, chanting, sound journeys, yoga nidra, tai chi, and more. “The energy and enthusiasm have been amazing,” Cole said, adding that meditation attracts everyone from young people to parents to retirees who want to explore the numerous well-established mental and physical health benefits. “You don’t need to get away to drop in,” Cole said. “You can clear your mind right here, in the middle of your day.” In addition to drop-in classes, which may include everything from guided meditations to chanting to sound journeys, unlimited memberships include the option for members to stop in any time during the day to meditate. A full schedule and pricing can be found on source meditation | space’s website. MARY ANN ARNOLD The History of Idaho and Legacy of a Woman BY KAYLI CORBIN PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” Our community’s past, filled with driven and visionary leaders, laid foundation for the continuous growth of our valley – and more importantly, the accomplishments of the leaders yet to come. Mary Ann Arnold, originally from Ohio, credits her career decisions and influence in part to her upbringing. She shares, “I had the advantage of life-long family support, but my most significant early influences were my parents. My Mother gave me confidence at an early age, and my Dad raised me as a tomboy – which was the best upbringing for me, as those experiences led to my future career choices. Add in Girl Scouts and playing sports which prepared me to be part of a team, learn how to accept criticism when deserved, make decisions based on 28

current challenges, and finally to be a leader.” Her journey to Idaho started at Louisiana State University, where she studied math as a grad student. There she met her late husband, Ken Arnold a Boise native, who had been in the Air Force and was enrolled as an undergraduate. After their marriage, Mary Ann accepted a position at NASA in Cleveland, Ohio while he finished his degree at Kent State. His deep family ties brought them back to Boise after graduation. Within their first year back, they were invited to an event at the Governor’s home and Mary Ann quickly realized a characteristic of our city that keeps many of us here – individuals can make a difference. Community involvement is such an integral part of what makes Boise a special place. Mary Ann’s participation in a variety of organizations over the years lends credence to the power of an engaged individual in an active community. Morrison-Knudsen has been a foundational component of Boise’s development. For those of you unfamiliar, the Morrison-Knudsen Company was a construction and engineering company founded in 1912 by Harry Morrison and Morris Knudsen.

Some of their local projects include the New York Canal, Bogus Basin, Cascade Reservoir, as well as numerous roads, railroad lines, power and water projects. On a national level, MK completed prestigious engineering feats such as the Hoover Dam, San Francisco Bay Bridge, and Penn Station to name a few. In 1947, the MK Foundation was started by Ann Morrison with donations from MK employees. Their primary objectives are to support individuals in need that are referred by local social service entities and to memorialize the Morrison-Knudsen name and legacy within the community. Mary Ann held the positions of Project Controls Engineer and Corporate Director in her time at MorrisonKnudsen, Inc. In 2013, after several requests, she agreed to join the MK Foundation. In her time with the foundation, Mary Ann has leveraged her love of Idaho’s people and places and experience in project coordination to have incredible impact in our community. She accepted her current role as President of the MK Foundation in 2019. One of her proudest accomplishments is the Morrison-Knudsen Foote Park Center. “Having worked for almost 30 years at MK on many projects, both national and foreign, and with my interest in history – what an opportunity it was to create an interpretive center from the ground up. I was able to use my professional skills, my avocation for history, and leave a legacy for the Footes as well as MK. It just doesn’t get much better than that. Over the 6 years of the project, my co-founder and I spent 1000’s of hours in all aspects of the project as it was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Of all my community volunteer involvement, I will never be able to top this one!” The history behind Arthur Foote’s (namesake of the Morrison-Knudsen Foote Park Center) Legacy aligns incredibly with that of the Morrison-Knudsen Company and subsequently the MK Foundation. Foote’s vision for the valley was to build a canal system, including a diversion dam. He couldn’t complete his project due to financial difficulties, but his dream was f inally realized when the US government acquired the project through the Reclamation Action of 1902. His visionary canal system was built and finalized in 1908 allowing the creation of a major platform for engineering and construction, such as the founding of the Morrison-Knudsen Company As co-founder of the Morrison-Knudsen Foote Park Center, Mary Ann’s passion for history and community are ever apparent. Her intrigue and recall of the past translates innovation and creation to the present and the future. She also serves as President of the Foundation for Idaho History. The foundation conducted a major capital campaign to fund the exhibits in the newly renovated Idaho State Museum on Capital Boulevard. Mary Ann served as the Chair of the Public Phase of the Campaign. The foundation raised $4.3 M with a matching $4M from the state to fund the $8M for the exhibits.

“As President of the foundation, I am looking forward to our next phase of support for the Idaho State Museum. We primarily will be providing funding support for traveling exhibits from other museums, hall of fame venues, Smithsonian, etc., as well as, out-reach to other parts of the state. Our museum is definitely for the 21st Century with its use of multi-media for exciting exhibits, interactive opportunities, artifact displays, creative design of exhibit areas and galleries – in short it is a visitor experience to be enjoyed multiple times. As a foundation, our goal is to keep it fresh, educational, and fun” says Mary Ann. As we reflect on the history of Idaho and the key players that make our city what it is, it’s important to reflect on the ways each and every one of us can be influential. History is written by each of its participants, and Mary Ann’s life and legacy are a clear indicator of how powerful that truly is. ¢

KARMA Downtown Boise’s Newest Hot Spot BY ANDREW COUSSENS PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON

It can be incredibly challenging to find a place for dinner with a group of people on a Saturday night in downtown Boise. And even more difficult on the crowded sidewalks of the ever popular 8th Street. Fortunately, Boise’s latest hot spot—Karma—is the perfect place to pass the time while waiting for your name to be called.

30

What was once Fatty’s Bar has been transformed into a spacious, well-lit, and comfortable lounge with a vast selection of games to keep everyone entertained. Jenga, pool, darts, and an exhilarating array of arcade classics are guaranteed to help kill time if you happened to make a similar mistake that we did: forgetting to make a reservation on the weekend. We were so enthralled with Karma’s game selection that we almost missed the critical ‘Your table is ready’ text message! Alongside their massive gaming arcade lives a delicious and plentiful cocktail menu, a concession area with flavored waters, and Dawson Taylor Coffee. Karma has plans to serve hot food in the future as well. Steve Masonheimer, co-owner and one of the masterminds behind the Fatty’s metamorphosis, took some time to share the story of Karma’s inception with Greenbelt Magazine. Beyond the lounge is an adjacent nightclub, which houses Freak Alley-inspired artwork, designed by eight local artists. Another Boise-area graphic design company was responsible for the numerous LED backlit portraits of musicians. Steve also revealed the brand-new laser lights and projector wall behind the DJ booth, adorned with 3,000 LED lights. Masonheimer also explained their unique Dance Safe program. The open atmosphere and ambient lighting of the nightclub makes the dancefloor less claustrophobic. But beyond that, safety cards are available to anyone feeling harassed or treated inappropriately. These cards are kept in the ladies’ restroom and anyone who feels uncomfortable can simply hand one of these cards to a security guard, who would then keep an eye on the them and intervene on their behalf if necessary. Another unique aspect of Karma is their DJ selection. Rather than fight for the few DJs in the Northwest whose rates are exorbitant and schedules already tight, Masonheimer felt that cultivating local DJs was a better and more sustainable option. A few senior DJs could work with those starting their careers and Karma would dedicate the first hour each weekend to a new DJ as they climbed their way up the industry ladder. Karma’s forward-thinking business model is a perfect fit for the growing downtown vibe. Their dedication to safety, comfort, and entertainment is something we can only hope that other businesses emulate in the coming future. Whether you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind with a few tasty cocktails or somewhere to tear up the dancefloor all night with your friends, Karma is the best of both worlds, with a spacious and aesthetic atmosphere to boot. ¢ For more information about Karma, visit them @8thStreetEntertainment or by searching Club Karma on Facebook.

BOISE'S BEST MOCKTAILS— Much more than Fizz BY MCCALE ASHENBRENER PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA THOMPSON

32

My old party trick was to bite into a can of cheap beer and shotgun it, vigorously drinking through the ragged hole as quickly as possible. It was quite impressive really. Now I have a stroller for two and avoid hangovers like the coronavirus, and I’m not alone. Kate Taylor wrote in Business Insider, “A 2018 report from Berenberg Research found that respondents in their teens and early 20s were drinking over 20% less per capita than millennials — who drank less than baby boomers and Gen Xers — did at the same age.” Sales of liquor and beer are down while nonalcoholic beer and cocktail sales are exploding. Sober bars are popping up in hip cities all over the nation. The message is clear, people want social connection, while also craving healthy alternatives. What makes a good cocktail, also makes a good mocktail. It is the balance of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, mindful of temperature and texture, all with a beautiful delivery. The best cocktails are complete thoughts of their own, everything in its right place. Mocktails have all the swank of a cocktail: fresh juices, shrubs or tart drinkable vinegars, and tinctures with herbaceous extracts and infusions, minus the booze. So whether pregnant, in recovery, or just wanting more clean, healthy living, these fine establishments and their delicious mocktails are the best in Boise.

DOWNTOWN The tried and true Red Feather did not disappoint with The Sage of Innocence for $4.25. It was bright with Martinelli’s sparkling cider providing a fun fizz, while the house made cranberry sage cordial brought a tart balance. Aptly named, it felt like listening to The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever whilst reclining on a blanket in the shade of a sycamore tree on a summer day. Fairly new to the block, Water Bear, has an exciting list of sans or low booze options on their Lo + No menu. The Eddy Out for $8 boasted pineapple, lime, habanero shrub and non-alcoholic beer. While I’d have liked more spice from the habanero, it was thick and juicy, yet still effervescent. I imagined myself in a 70’s basement, melted into a velour couch, listening to the Velvet Underground’s Stephanie Says sipping on the Eddy Out. The Shangri-La of spirit-free drinks is the very new Free Spirit Lounge and home to iOne Bitters. They have an impressive rotating menu of booze-free drinks, shrubs, bitters, and syrups. Everything is diligently house made with local ingredients, like rose hips foraged from the Boise River and then energized with crystals and moonlight. The Elevation for $8 combines pasilla, perilla and clover tea with celery shrub, smoked blood orange, rosemary simple syrup, fresh lime juice, smoked citrus salt and smoked bitters. It drank like a walk on a fall day listening to Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy. Brisk and earthy, it grew in flavor and complexity with each sip, all whilst helping to balance my third-eye chakra. My shotgunning days may have waned, but I’m feeling way more spry on Saturday morn. So whatever the reason to be off the sauce, do not deprive, Boise has many palate pleasing options for the sober curious. ¢

THE MULTIPLE BENEFITS OF

STRENGTHENING YOUR FOUNDATION Consider this analogy: You wouldn’t build your house on a weak foundation. You’d ensure the foundation was strong enough to support it. The same logic applies to our bodies, where the skeletal system is the foundation that supports us physically in everything we do.

T

o understand the importance of the skeletal system, it’s important to understand the role of the central nervous system in regulating your body’s strength. The central nervous system regulates the physical strength of your body based upon the strength of the skeletal system. As your skeletal system declines with age, your physical strength declines as well. Your central nervous system will not allow your muscles to become stronger than what your skeletal system can handle. If you have ever reached a plateau in your strength training or experienced strength loss as you age, a likely reason is the weakness of your skeletal system.

HOW YOU CAN SAFELY STRENGTHEN YOUR SKELETAL SYSTEM

Your central nervous system will not allow your muscles to become stronger than what your skeletal system can handle.

We know through research that dates back to 1892 that if bone tissue receives a sufficient amount of pressure it will adapt and become stronger. Since the 19th century, the medical community has been looking at the relationship of bone to muscle. Dr. Julius Wolff, a German anatomist and surgeon, made the discovery that bone, in a healthy person or animal, adapts to the load under which it is placed. This pressure stimulates the development of healthy new bone tissue, creating healthier and stronger bones. Now known as Wolff’s Law, he also stated that the reverse of this was true. Bones exposed to decreased pressure, or load, would become less dense and weaker. A century later, in 2012, a research study on osteogenic loading discovered the minimum amount of pressure required to stimulate bone development is 4.2 times a person’s body weight. From this research a unique robotic musculoskeletal development system was designed to safely deliver the proper stimulus to just about anyone at any age. This proprietary system for osteogenic loading, called Spectrum, specifically develops the foundation of your physical body, the skeletal system, both efficiently and without risk of injury.

You don’t have to lose healthy bone tissue as you age. Osteogenic loading can help you maintain strong and healthy bones for life.

MORE CHIRP, LESS MOO! Cricket Seasoning goes Mainstream with Orchestra Provisions BY MCCALE ASHENBRENER PHOTOGRAPHY KATE STODDARD // MARAN SHEILS

Solastalgia is distress caused by environmental change and its impact on people and their home environment. The anxiety is real. The American Psychological Association created a 69-page climate change guide to help mental health care providers navigate the climateinduced melancholy of their patients. Kate Stoddard created Orchestra Provisions, an artisan specialty cricket seasoning, from solastalgia and a deep sense of love and responsibility for the wild places that raised her. Stoddard continues a legacy of outdoor adventuring and enlightened entrepreneurship in Idaho. Her father, Russ Stoddard, wrote Rise Up: How to Build a Socially Conscious Business. The idea for Orchestra Provisions took root while Stoddard and her partner were managing a river rafting business, starting construction on a new home, purchasing a

36

shuttle business and raising their newborn son Wren in a cute little airstream trailer in Stanley, Idaho. Yet Stoddard’s passion and purpose cared not for better timing. Her recent masters of the science of nutrition, an urgency to create more sustainable food systems, and a deep culinary curiosity led her to crickets. Stoddard admits that she is still a burger girl, “but let’s face it people, we all have to do less of that. More Chirp, Less Moo!” According to the bbc.com “If cattle were their own nation, they would be the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the US. By reducing one’s consumption of animal protein by half, they can cut their diet’s carbon footprint by more than 40%.” One ounce of cricket powder contains 19 grams of protein and loads of iron, fiber and healthy fatty acids. Cricket’s require less resources as they reproduce quickly and use a fraction of the land and water than the meat industry. Stoddard was not the only one craving more sustainable solutions to our climate crisis. She won the 2019 Trailmix pitch competition during Boise startup week. Her cricket seasonings, with over eight flavors like picogrillo, chai-spice, and togarashi, can be found on shelves at Albertsons flagship stores and the Co-op in both Boise & Meridian. Those interested in using less packaging can dabble with her spices in bulk as well as her therapeutic line of golden milk, Mayan cocoa green smoothie mix and crimson root at Roots Zero Waste Market and the Vervain Collective Apothecary in Garden City. The Boise Fry Company is also on board with three flavors of custom cricket salts.

“Boise is booming, and with an influx of growth we have to remember that the things that make it special are worth protecting,” Stoddard reflects. “Just like a group of crickets is called an orchestra, individuals with a shared vision can orchestrate change. People motivated by a common cause are capable of generating a positive future for the health of the individual and simultaneously the health of the earth.” ¢ Check out orchestraprovisions.com and follow her on Facebook and Instagram for recipes and news on happenings in the entolution. There you can learn more about her femmeento warrior team of inspired world-class female athletes with her same shared values of promoting sustainable food systems and saving wild spaces.

ENTERTAIN Giovanni Giron, a talented DJ with a reputation for playing the best music.

Laura Johnston from Austin, Texas has experienced first hand the variety of music Austin inspires.

SALSA IDAHO! LATIN DANCE IN BOISE How a guy from Guatemala and a gal from Austin, Texas changed entertainment in Boise Idaho EDITED BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS

From the time he was young, Guatemalan native, Giovanni Giron has loved all kinds of music from. But when he moved to Los Angeles, he discovered he had talent for deejaying. In LA, he met many DJs and learned how to play the right combination of music to keep the audience entertained and to keep them moving on the dance floor. Giovanni moved to the Meridian, Idaho and began playing at parties, events, clubs and local radio stations. Giovanni gained a reputation as someone who played the best music and always packed the house. He particularly loved Salsa along with other tropical Latin music. Laura Johnston is from Austin, Texas and experienced first-hand the variety of music that Austin inspires. And she never missed an opportunity to go country western dancing at the Broken Spoke in Austin. In college, she played fútbol on the men’s team and started the women’s team. On weekends they had tropical Latin parties where people brought Latin food, talked about world events and danced. The music was always good and people danced with old friends and made new friends—everyone was welcome. When Laura moved to Boise, she missed those kinds of social events. She and and a friend discovered Salsa dancing and quickly got involved with its growing popularity at a café, where she met DJ Giovanni. She wanted to produce a bigger Salsa event but was unsure how to make it happen. Fate stepped in and she was invited to the 10th anniversary 38

of the Puerto Rican Salsa Congress. She learned the event was centered on the quality of the Salsa orchestras, while they also offered other activities. When she returned to Boise, she started working on the first Idaho Salsa Congress. She asked DJ Giovanni to help her. Laura chose the Knitting Factory Concert House because she wanted to work with people who had experience with concerts and events. The Idaho Salsa Congress became a fast success. Laura received a call from the manager of the Knitting Factory who asked her if she would like to try a DJ a Salsa event on a regular basis. That was not in her plans, but she knew who to call—DJ Geovanni. Salsa Idaho is their brand, and they have presented tropical Latin music and dance events at the Knitting Factory since 2007. Through hard work and dedication, they have seen their audiences grow to capacity (1,000). Salsa Idaho events are unique because they attract people from all over Idaho and the world. The music is invigorating and encourages people to engage in community and togetherness. They strive to always be welcoming to all. ¢ Check them out online at www.salsaidaho.com and Salsa Idaho on Facebook for more information. We’ll see you there!

THE TWISTED KITCHEN Supporting culinary creatives BY KAYLI CORBIN

PHOTOGRAPHY KELSEY PARFITT

One the biggest obstacles entrepreneurs face when starting their new business venture is a location to create and distribute their products. When making physical goods, production generally happens in the home prior to stepping into a brick and mortar establishment. However, the makers handling food are legally obligated to create in a licensed space outside of their home. This concept of a commissary kitchen has allowed countless crafters of consumables to safely create food and avoid the weighty overhead required to start a physical location. The Twisted Kitchen was created to provide budding Treasure Valley food entrepreneurs a fully-functioning, commercialgrade commissary space to grow their food businesses. Located off Chinden in Garden City, the iconic Woman of Steel building became the home of the Twisted Kitchen and the Twisted Ewe in 2016. Having a pre-existing kitchen space, Carolyn Parkinson, along with her management team, began the kitchen’s extensive transformation in late 2018. Officially ready to rent in mid2019, the Twisted Kitchen is starting to make its mark among the local culinary community. Their mission statement says it best. “Our facility aims to offer Treasure Valley caterers, bakers, food truck owners, personal chefs, and confectioners a hub to run their food business in a certified commercial facility. Twisted Kitchen is open to its members 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We strive to make our facility a comfortable and fun place where you don’t mind coming to cook every day. We want this to feel like your second home and for all its members to be a community of chefs who share in their enthusiasm for food. We are also production friendly, offering a great location for your film or commercial needs.” Their décor is meant to inspire clientele to think outside the box, push boundaries, to create, and innovate. The Mouth/Body Connection More and more research has shown how important the connection is between our oral health and our overall health. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. After all, the mouth is the gateway to our body, bringing in nutrients and oxygen. Those vital ingredients are then sent to other organs to be digested, and distributed throughout the body. Poor oral health, like periodontal disease, can actually support or worsen other illnesses in the body. How? It helps harmful bacteria reach the rest of your body through your bloodstream. For example, it’s been shown that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to that’s just a start. Other studies have shown that harmful bacteria in the mouth can make a person more vulnerable to blood clots which can, possibly, increase the chance of a stroke; poor oral health may worsen respiratory illnesses because as you breathe, that harmful bacteria ends up in your lungs where it can wreak havoc like pneumonia and of an unborn child. The list goes on. In fact, 120 diseases can be detected through the state of your oral health. Which is another reason to see your dentist regularly. When you take care of your oral health you’re getting a head start on taking care of you. All of you. Brain
