There are two premier ski resorts, nine golf courses, two state campgrounds, and 700,000 acres in the Catskill State Park to explore.
100 Mile Radius
The region is home to the longest, fastest and highest zipline in North America, the highest cascading waterfall in New York State and host to legendary festivals all year long. It’s the birthplace of the Hudson River School of Art, renowned landscape painter Thomas Cole, and Rip Van Winkle, the title character in Washington’s Irving’s famous 1819 short story. In the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, you can take advantage of the beautiful landscape, old-world charm and cultural legacy. Attend a variety of unique events, stay at our all-inclusive family resorts, explore our history and experience the magic. Awaken to Adventure!

Lee, NJ, the path winds through State Parks and continues through the Catskill Park for 95 miles and climbs 9 of the major peaks, some the highest in the Catskills. Hunter Mountain This Year: Two new gladed trails have been added to Hunter Mountain’s trail system–
Which Way Glades, located on the West Side between Claire’s Way and Taylor’s Run, and Empire Glades located near the terrain park. Z-Lift has been removed from the West Side, now serviced by the high-speed detachable quad, Zephyr Express, which has opened Claire’s Way to tower-less skiing and riding for the first time since the 70s. Snowmaking is now capable on both sides of that trail. A new user-friendly eSki Calendar interface has been implemented. Purchasing lift tickets is now much easier, and it helps our guests save money as well. Add lessons and rentals to the shopping cart and create a unique package designed to meet specific needs. This calendar interface is also available for lodging at the Kaatskill Mountain Club hotel. Upon arrival, guests will find a newly designed base lodge slope-side patio area, complete with retaining wall, fire pits, custom Adirondack seating and custom tree trunk tables.
Terrain Park is a freestyle skier or rider’s dream, complete with jib park and regularly updated features. For more info on the park, visit www.ridehunter.com.

The Hudson River School Art Trail
See Art History Come to Life on the Hudson River School Art Trail Take your own self-guided tour of the Trail and compare the painted scenes from the 1800s with the same vistas today. In the early 19th century, the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County’s scenic views and striking landscapes inspired a new genre of American art called the Hudson River School, founded by landscape artist Thomas Cole who was followed by the great landscape painters Frederic Church, Asher B. Durand, Jasper Cropsey, Albert Bierstadt, Sanford Gifford, and many others. Launched in 2005, the Hudson River School Art Trail takes you to the sites that inspired America’s first great landscape artists, and it begins at the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill where the 19th-century artist Thomas Cole worked and lived. Tour Cole’s beautifully restored home and see his original painting studio. Brochures with maps and directions to the trail’s 9 stops in the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County are available at this location or at www.hudsonriverschool.org. 14
Featuring images of some of the magnificent paintings of the Hudson River School artists, the trail map leads you to the views depicted in the paintings shown in the brochure. New for 2013, the Hudson River School Art Trail has installed metal plaques with a raised medallion design at each of the sites in the Catskills to allow you to do a “rubbing” of the plaque as well as scan a QR code for more information about the view. Collect all nine rubbings and return them to either the Thomas Cole Historic Site or the Olana State Historic Site in neighboring Columbia County to be entered in a Grand Prize drawing. Legendary Rip Van Winkle The story of Rip Van Winkle is a significant part of the Great Northern Catskills’ cultural legacy. The famous short story by Washington Irving, which takes place in the Catskills, first appeared in a collection entitled “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon” in 1819. The story goes something like this: Set in pre-Revolutionary New York, Rip Van Winkle lives a life of ease – much to the chagrin of his wife, Dame Van Winkle. Rip’s passions include wandering through the Catskill Mountains and old-growth forests, being idle and enjoying life. He doesn’t work for long however, and though itinerant, he is well loved by all in town. The children especially love the fanciful stories he tells. One day, Rip wanders off into the woods to escape his nagging wife. Hearing thunder, he unwittingly follows the ghosts of Henry Hudson’s men deep into the wilderness. As the men play nine-pins, Rip imbibes a “magic potion” – quietly falling into a deep sleep. He wakens 20 years later, his beard grown long and his beloved dog, Wolf, nowhere to be found. Rip makes his way back into the village and discovers that the American Revolution has taken place. He is no longer recognizable, nor does he know any of the townspeople who greet him. Rip’s luck holds out and it isn’t long before he finds his place among his grown children – though much of his family has passed on – and resumes his habitual idleness. His tale is repeated and solemnly taken to heart by hen-pecked husbands who wish they could have shared in Rip’s good fortune and slept through the atrocities of war. The book was issued in installments in the United States and became the first book by an American writer to achieve international success. Washington Irving later moved to the area and was welcomed with great enthusiasm by all who appreciated what he had done for the prestige of American literature in Europe. Today, Rip’s legacy persists and his story is widely available and well-known. Greene County is proud to be the home of Rip Van Winkle and commemorates him in various ways. Rip Van Winkle is infused throughout the region in the form of events, commemorative statues, numerous business names and wonderful paintings at many of the historic lodges and resorts:
The Rip Van Winkle Wine and Cheese Festival kicks off each year in May – celebrating the bounty of regional cheese-makers, wineries and much more.
Play the “Catskill Seven,” a series of golf courses along the Rip Van Winkle Golf Trail offering incredible views of the mountains and valleys.
Explore the legendary “cloves” where Rip took his marathon nap.
Rip Van Winkle Wacky Raft Race: Starts at Riverfront Park in Athens, enter your own wacky raft or come by to observe and cheer on your favorite competitors as they race to Dutchman’s Landing in Catskill.
View the colorfully painted statues placed around the mountain-top region or hike to the top of Hunter Mountain and discover a larger-than-life sculpture of Rip Van Winkle. Envisioned by David Slutzky and carved by sculptor Kevin Van Hentenryck, the blue sandstone carving is meant to depict Rip as he awakens to discover his curious predicament. Discover the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County – a land of legend and lore, mythologized by history and loved by visitors.
