BE CAT N’ AROUND IN CATSKILL
Explore the village of Catskill on a hunt to find all 70 of this year’s cat statues. Why so many cats, you ask? Each year, the Heart of Catskill Association creates fiberglass statues for local artists to design and Catskill businesses to sponsor. The outdoor art exhibit is on display from Memorial Day through Labor Day before the pieces are auctioned off with proceeds given to local charities and community projects. @wandercuse
The grass is always bluer on the other side. What an incredible few days at Grey Fox! From the soulful strumming of banjos to the mesmerizing melodies of fiddles, we were captivated by the sound of bluegrass filling blue Catskill skies.

Meet @wechoseadventures, an adventurous family of five from Baltimore, MD. Known for their epic road trips and love for the great outdoors, they recently spent four unforgettable days exploring the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County. Follow along as they bring their trip to life!
Once we arrived at Winter Clove Inn, we felt as though we had stepped into a postcard of Catskills beauty. The charming, family-owned resort is set on 300 acres of private land and has been welcoming guests since 1838, making it one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the Catskills.
Immediately after checking in we went to explore the property! We tried our hand at pickleball, shuffleboard, and tennis before rallying the boys and taking a hike up to Artist Falls—a stunning 25-foot waterfall just a short jaunt from the inn. Years of natural erosion have carved a beautiful basin at its base, and the Alfred Clark Covered Bridge perches right above, offering a picture-perfect view.
As the sun set, we headed back to wash up before settling in for dinner at the resort, followed by live local music and an outdoor barbecue. This place was making all my classic Catskills resort dreams come true!
“THE CATSKILLS REGION IN NEW YORK IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT ALL YEAR ROUND. ESPECIALLY PERFECT FOR OUTDOORLOVING FAMILIES. THINK ENDLESS MOUNTAIN VIEWS, CASCADING WATERFALLS, AND A WHOLE LOT OF ADVENTURE PACKED INTO OVER 700,000 ACRES OF WILDERNESS. IT'S THE BEST DESTINATION FOR FAMILIES CRAVING A MIX OF RELAXATION AND EXCITEMENT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS. TIME TO PACK YOUR BAGS AND GET READY FOR A CATSKILLS MOUNTAIN ESCAPE!”
- Jessica Human, travel photographer, mother and homeschooler
Day two of our Catskills adventure was packed with action. We started the morning at North-South Lake State Campground, where the Catskill Mountains revealed their best: rushing streams, cozy campsites, and sweeping vistas. If you’re in the Great Northern Catskills, a stop at North-South Lake is a must. Here, hikers can choose from easy, medium, or challenging trails, each offering incredible views.
Afterward, we made a quick stop at Mama’s Boy Burgers in Tannersville to refuel before letting the boys run wild at Zoom Flume Water Park—New York’s #1 Family Outdoor Water Park. With tandem racer slides, thrilling twisters, shallow splash pools, and a winding lazy river, you’ll want to reserve a good amount of time—and sunscreen—for a full day of fun.
Back at Winter Clove Inn, we relaxed over dinner and then gathered around the bonfire to toast marshmallows and enjoy s’mores under a sky full of stars. The perfect end to a perfect day!
We started the day slow. I enjoyed a quiet moment with coffee on Winter Clove Inn’s wrap-a-round porch, watching the first hints of autumn color appear in the trees. Soon enough, the boys were up and ready for action. With so much to do right on the property, they headed out for a quick round of golf on the premises before we ventured into downtown Catskill for breakfast at Willa’s.
Our next stop was the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and studio! This was such a fun way to learn about the “father of American landscape painting,” view historic artworks, and take in the surrounding mountains that inspired his iconic art style.
We then sauntered along the Hudson River Skywalk, connecting two national historic landmarks, the Thomas Cole Site and Frederic Church’s Olana, both offering sweeping views of the Hudson Valley below and the Catskill Mountains above.
Lunch at Subversive Malting + Brewing, one of our local favorites, was a treat before we headed into downtown Catskill. The boys were thrilled exploring the game selection at Kirwan’s Game Store and hunting for vinyl treasures at Spike’s Record Rack
Back at Winter Clove Inn that evening, we wrapped up our day with a cozy dinner, savoring every moment of this Catskills retreat.
On our final morning, we enjoyed breakfast once again at the inn before we set out for a morning hike along the breathtaking Kaaterskill Falls trail. After taking in the stunning views, it was time to head home, already dreaming of our next trip back to the Catskills.
Trust me, the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County are something special. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, exploring one-of-a-kind mountain towns, or just relaxing in a cozy inn, the Catskills have a way of creating those "remember when" moments that'll keep you coming back for more.

As vacation time is trending more towards quality time spent with family and friends, Catskill’s iconic resorts are filling a niche.
On a clear August morning, Francis Thomas Duffy revels in celebrating his 101st birthday under the generous shade of a large maple tree encircled by family, everyone laughing and relaxed. It’s Duffy’s annual family vacation at Sunny Hill Resort and Golf Course in Greenville. A whopping 80 relatives have come together for the week. For 55 years, generations of the Duffy family have vacationed together at this all-inclusive Catskills family resort. Francis sums up his lifetime of family vacations at Sunny Hill like this: “I leave my home, and I come home.”
Relatives are quick to chime in, gushing about how much they can’t wait to return each year to this homeaway-from-home, scenic, adventure-filled getaway.
“My kids would rather come here than go to Disneyland,” says not one but many of the parents with school-age children.
Meanwhile, in the main lodge, Jenna, a 15-year-old from Queens, with piercings and an edgy, fashionsavvy look, wraps up a successful morning of selling the jewelry she had made during her family’s stay at the resort. She’s neither glued to her phone nor looking like she is about to die of boredom–the look you might expect from a present-day teen on a family vacation.
“The people are great. It’s very open,” Jenna cheerfully volunteers. “There’s a place for everyone.”
Jenna’s mom says she started taking her young family to the resort five years ago after seeing friends' social media posts of their vacation week at Sunny Hill Resort.
Outside of the main lodge, a 24-foot mobile climbing wall has been rolled in, and children and teens have lined up to take a turn scaling the wall and smacking a bell at the top to broadcast their accomplishment.
Across the main driveway is an immaculately kept, large in-ground pool, a junior pool, and a splash pad. Around the corner, families are playing pickleball. Everywhere there are “free-range” children (and adults) biking and riding scooters on the sidewalks and resort’s private roads.
Sunny Hill has an 18-hole golf course on its meticulously maintained 450-acre property with stunning views of the Catskill’s Blackhead Mountains. While some visitors take advantage of the golf facilities, including the driving range
and pro shop, available to guests at a discounted rate, many are too busy enjoying the resort’s other offerings— horseshoes, shuffleboard, bocce, pickleball courts, eight playgrounds, rowboats, paddle boats, fishing on the 10acre lake, and more!
For the ambitious, the resort has a 5.5-mile Viking Obstacle Course with more than 35 obstacles, including rope climbs, wall climbs, and log balancing, among other challenges. Yet something as simple as taking a turn ringing the dinner bell, which was the founders’ former schoolhouse bell, are equally popular as the resorts’ daily routines make visitors feel at home.
It’s nearing noon, and the chef is finishing up the lunch options of caprese sandwiches, Caesar salad with chicken, and hot or sweet sausage hoagies with bell peppers. In the expansive dining room with a glass wall of floor-to-ceiling windows looking out towards the Catskills’ Blackhead Mountains, tables are neatly set to accommodate 300+ guests. The authentic, midcentury furniture looks like something out of a Swiss mountain lodge. Three meals a day are part of the resort’s all-inclusive package, and each week has a lineup of scheduled events and entertainment at Sunny Hill. After dinner a fleet of unique and vintage vehicles are rolled out every evening for the popular “Just for Fun Rides.” The fleet includes a World War II tank, the “bumblebee” mobile, hay wagon rides, and an antique, open-air passenger train among many others.
The week’s festivities culminate Friday with the Lake Party– a lakeside celebration with live music, dancing, a fireworks display and the vintage animatronic “Hank and Bo Show” for an evening to remember.
Like many of the family resorts in the Great Northern Catskills, Sunny Hill was founded over 100 years ago and continues to be family run. As a result, for many guests the “all-inclusive” part of the family resort experience is more than the meals, lodging, activities, entertainment and amenities built into the package stay. It’s also the bonds formed with fellow guests and the resort owners that create an inclusive feeling of “family” that extends beyond your stay.
Each Great Northern Catskills Resort has its own flavor of fun and family experiences. Find yours.
