Legendary Rip Van Winkle The story of Rip Van Winkle is a significant part of Greene County’s cultural legacy. The famous short story takes place in the Catskills, and is set in pre-Revolutionary New York. The story goes that Rip wanders into the mountains one day to escape the nagging of his wife, and discovers a host of men playing nine pins and drinking a “magic potion.” Rip enjoys a nip and soon falls into a deep slumber. When he wakes, his beard is grown long and his rifle is rusty. He soon finds that he has slept for 20 years, long enough to miss the Revolutionary War and long enough for his children to grow into men and women. Rip’s tale is commemorated throughout the county at events and attractions across the Great Northern Catskills including: • The Rip Van Winkle Wine Festival, which kicks off each year in May, celebrating the bounty of regional wineries, homemade goods and much more. • Play the Catskill Nine, a series of golf courses along the Rip Van Winkle Golf Trail offering incredible views of the mountains and valleys. • Explore the legendary Clove Experience, including the spot where Rip took his marathon nap. • Hike to the top of Hunter Mountain and discover a larger-than-life sculpture of Rip Van Winkle. 5
