Legendary Rip Van Winkle The story of Rip Van Winkle is a significant part of Greene County’s cultural legacy. The famous short story takes place in the Catskills, set in pre-Revolutionary New York. The story goes that Rip wanders into the mountains one day to escape the nagging of his wife, and discovers a host of men playing nine pins and drinking a “magic potion.” Rip enjoys a nip and soon falls into a deep slumber. When he wakes, his beard is grown long and his rifle is rusty. He soon finds that he has slept for 20 years, long enough to miss the Revolutionary War and his children growing into men and women. Rip’s tale is commemorated throughout the Great Northern Catskills of Greene County including:

The grounds feature Dutch Colonial dwellings and 19th-century barns, including the oldest surviving house in the Hudson Valley, which dates back to 1663. Victorian Horse Barn features a collection of Greene County and Catskill Mountain House memorabilia.

An architectural gem built in 1874, it served as a manned lighthouse until the 1960s. Today, only its light is maintained by the US Coast Guard. The lighthouse is located in the Hudson River just south of Athens and is visible from the Athens Riverfront Park.

Originally built over 200 years ago in the townland of Carrickataggart, the cottage was carefully disassembled and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in pieces and sections. First the chimney and center wall, and then the remaining pieces, including original handmade Irish furnishings were sent abroad. After arriving in New York Harbor they were unloaded, shipped to East Durham and reassembled.

Mahayana Buddhist Temple

Our Lady of Knock Shrine

Affords breathtaking views of the Black Dome Range. Enjoy scenery of the Hudson Valley from the summit before descending along the Batavia Kill. Described as the toughest and most dangerous hiking trail in the Eastern United States, the Devil’s Path is one of the most popular in the Catskill Park. Offers hikers a chance to reach the summits of 5 of the 35 Catskill High Peaks (two more are reachable by detours).

The trail is primarily used for hiking from May thru October with a beautiful 15-foot waterfall at approximately 1,000 foot elevation. Dogs permitted. The trail offers challenging terrain over ever-changing scenery with mixed hardwood forests, dark hemlock groves along swift-flowing creeks and a spruce-fir cap on the higher peaks.

The perfect trail for active hikers who want a longer experience that offers expansive views. This trail passes by Boulder Rock and the former site of the Catskill Mountain House. One of the Catskills iconic hikes located on the summit of Hunter Mountain. The fire tower offers panoramic views of the mountains and adjacent Hudson Valley region.

Indian Head Mountain

Great trail for avid backcountry hikers, offering a strenuous climb that crosses the Plattekill Creek, part of the Long Path, and winds through a steep crevice.

Kaaterskill Falls

At 260 feet, this two-tiered fall is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State. The spectacular waterfall attracted tourists, painters and poets when it was first publicized in the early 1800s. Scenic marked hiking trails with views of the Kaaterskill Clove. POSTED TRAIL SIGNS MUST BE OBEYED AND PROPER FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED.

Plateau Mountain (via Warner Creek Trail)
