STRAIN OF THE MONTH
Words by Skyla Patton / Photos by Trevor Meyer
Oregonians rejoice:
it’s time to talk about Jagermeister. Often referred to as JR or JGR in the cannabis community, jager’s comes from the strains Hindu Kush and Blue Dream. Hailing from southern Oregon, this strain has a special place in our heart and is held as a point of pride for the many growers in the state who farm it. Named after the famous German liqueur, this powerful indica strain will produce similar results without the nasty hangover the next day. Jager is a classic for seasoned smokers and is often featured prominently in Oregon dispensaries. Be sure to have a sealed contained ready if you’re picking up a few Jager buds, because this strain comes with a hefty, musky smell that will linger long after it’s smoked. To put it bluntly, it smells almost exactly like gasoline, but its rich, flavorful earthy tones won’t leave a funny taste behind. Jager’s stickiness makes it the perfect bud for a joint, and it’s guaranteed to relax any occasion or mood. Even if you’re not a fan of its boozy namesake, we promise this calming strain will mellow you out rather than amp you up. It’s known for providing happy vibes and a euphoric feeling that perfectly combat with a rainy day and a big fluffy blanket. JR is also one of the best strains for relieving muscle pain, stress and depression. It is particularly effective against SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Bottom Line: After a few puffs of this indica, a tranquil energy will wash over you and take the tenseness from your muscles.

BUDTENDER SPOTLIGHT
Tyler Banks Interview by Anna Glavash / Photos by Sierra Pedro
How and when did you become a budtender? Some longtime friends came to me with a job offer and an idea to open a dispensary. Moss hadn't even been born, still a twinkle in their eyes, yet I knew this was going to be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. My skill set of working in all avenues of customer service for 17 years had really paid off.
What was it like the first time you got high? I'll never forget it. My step-brother and I felt it necessary to venture as far away from the house as physically possible. Once we made it to the other side of the pond on my parents’ property, we sat behind a tree, fired up my new Zippo, and sparked a party bowl big enough to get 10 people high! I can still remember the sensory combination of lighter fuel and ditch weed terps. We coughed our lungs out, every hit, and proceeded to walk back to the house. Time slowed way down, my body felt extremely heavy, and we managed to polish off an entire box of strawberry shortcake popsicles.
How do you approach recommending a product to a customer? I've found that it's a two way street. I like to begin by asking a few questions of my own. "What time of day do you like to consume? How would you rate your tolerance to cannabis? Are you looking for any specific effects?" Gathering information about a customer gives me a head start on effectively finding something I think they'll enjoy.
6 | GREENEUGENE.COM
What’s one stereotype about cannabis users that’s true? What’s one that’s false? Can they find joy in the simplest things? TRUE! My cannabis of choice soothes inflammation and pain, slows down my thought patterns, and mellows the mind enough to truly enjoy the little things in life. Take some time to slow down and appreciate the sloth’s pace for a change. What can I say? The sloth life chose me. Do all cannabis users like watching Bob Ross? FALSE! Not all stoners enjoy the soothing sound of his voice, the way he creates something from nothing, life lessons taught via "happy little trees", and squirrel buddy shenanigans. On second thought, I take it back! Everyone, stoner on not, loves Bob Ross.
What do you look for in a strain? Terpenes. More often than not, if I enjoy the smell of a strain, I'm going to enjoy the taste and effects. My relationship with the cannabis plant and this process has not led me astray. I do tend to lean towards a more mellowing mood, so terpenes like Caryophyllene and Linalool are some smell profiles I seek out.
What’s special about this shop? Moss Crossing is not only a soothing place to chat it up and buy a blunt, it's a hub for information, and a springboard for squashing stigmas. Also the laid back vibe and decor of the shop won a DOPE Magazine Industry Award for the "Best Atmosphere" in all of Oregon!
Best part about the job? The people! Experiencing first-hand how cannabis is benefiting a customer’s daily life is one of the most rewarding things about being in this industry, and that's just the customer side of things. Also, Oregon is one of the few states that requires ALL products to be free of pesticides and mold via rigorous analytical testing. Go Oregon! Keep'n it green!
Favorite way to consume? I'd say my favorite way to consume is the "combination method". I start most days with a baseline level of cannabis derived CBD, taken in a tincture or mint, to squash any pain or inflammation I'm experiencing. I have some screws and hardware in my femur from a car accident I was in a number of years ago, so CBD has become a big part of my herbal treatment. Then, depending on what day it is, I generally get my THC sometime in the mid-tolate afternoon with a gummy, chocolate or infused beverage. I usually save my smoking rituals for the evening time with a hit of the bong, hemp-wrapped Moss Crossing-rolled blunt, or CO2 oil vape pen.
TEXTING AND DRIVING MAKES GOOD PEOPLE LOOK BAD.
What accessory or paraphanelia do you like to use? Hempwick has quickly become one of my favorite accessories. No butane equals more natural flavor. Just make sure you've fully extinguished your hempwick between uses. My favorite paraphernalia has got to be the Launch Box from Magic Flight. It's a dried herb vaporizer that has a lifetime warranty, numerous accessory upgrades, and is the most simplistic portable flower vaporizer on the market. And it’s available at Moss Crossing.
When I’m not here, I’m… Lucidly traversing a dreamscape created by my subconscious mind OR discovering a new band I had no idea I couldn't live without.
Are you high right now? Yes indeedy.

Beauty Green
A Look at Local Hemp Beauty Products
Words by Kelsey Tidball / Photo by Sierra Pedro
Hemp products have a wide range of beauty benefits. Two Oregon-based companies, Wild Grace and Oregon Hemp Works, specialize in the rejuvenating aspects of the versatile plant. We talked to these businesses to find out what goes into making hemp-based beauty products.
Wild Grace Wild Grace is a Eugene beauty company that focuses on sustainable, plant-based beauty products. Katie, the owner of Wild Grace, has spent her life dabbling in the ways of the apothecary. As a little girl, she experimented with the herbs in her family’s herb garden under the guidance of her uncle. He revealed to her that before pharmaceutical medicines became the norm, physicians used plants and herbs just like the ones she played with in the garden to cure all sorts of ills. She would grind them up and mix them together, noting their unique smells, colors and shapes. Katie was always looking to learn more about plants and what they can do for modern medicine and health. “When I was in college, I struggled a lot with anxiety and depression,” Katie said. “I was looking for a really holistic way to increase my physical and emotional health rather than taking pills, and I think plants can help complement our self-care.” Today, Katie uses those same holistic principles to create beauty and skincare products at Wild Grace that are made from allnatural, plant-based ingredients. Many are made with hemp oil and other hemp products and are formulated for a variety of afflictions like dry or oily skin, inflammation and sensitivity. Years ago, Katie swore off of harsh, chemical-based cosmetics, realizing just how harmful they can be to body and spirit. However, she also struggled with finding natural skincare products that were right for her lifestyle and for her skin. She kept trying new brands and they kept coming up short. “I knew there must have been a better way,” Katie said. So, she 8 | GREENEUGENE.COM
decided to put her apothecary skills to good use and started to formulate her own products. “In the process of crafting my own skincare,” Katie says on her website, “the question in the back of my mind was, ‘Why recreate all the products already on the shelf?’” The conclusion that Katie came to was, “the world doesn’t need another version of the same face cream, even if it is ‘all natural.” From that, Wild Grace was born. Wild Grace offers products such as Fir and Myrtle Gentle Cleansing Milk, which is made from white rose, douglas fir, sunflower and jojoba oils, hemp seed, coconut oil soap and rosemary extract. It is designed to nourish and stimulate dull, dry skin. They offer organic face masks, such as the Rosy Cheeks Exfoliating Mask, the Pumpkin Enzyme Corrective Mask and the Ondine Purifying Mask. They also offer facial creams and serums that are designed for oily skin, dehydrated skin, combination skin and damaged skin. For Katie, skincare is a ritual. She offers collections of products that are meant to be paired in order to optimize her customers’ experience. She believes that skincare and self-care are deeply connected, and Wild Grace products are designed to encourage responsible, guilt-free, natural “me time.” Being involved in the company is extremely important to Katie, so each of her products has been designed and formulated by hand. She says she has so many ideas for new products, she often finds it difficult to rein in her creativity and limit Wild Grace’s
production; however, she understands the importance of keeping the company small, staying true to her brand and perfecting her products. “I want to just keep going,” she said. “I love being able to employ local people and offer jobs and a livable wage. I am really excited about the company’s organic, steady growth.” Wild Grace products are available on her website, www.wildgrace. me, and can also be purchased at local farmers markets and events where she is often found selling alongside her fiance, the proprietor of a local hemp-based printing company, and their friends at Little Bees Candle Coo.

Oregon Hemp Works is an Oregon-based beauty company that does things a little differently. The company was founded in 2010 by Benjamin Christensen, who was inspired to make soap by the movie Fight Club. Yes, you read that correctly. That scene where Brad Pitt holds that horrible hazing ritual and burns Edward Norton’s arm with lye? That was the inspiration for Oregon Hemp Works. Don’t worry, their soaps won’t cause chemical burns. In fact, Oregon Hemp Works soaps are 100% vegan, 100% nonGMO, made without dyes, parabens, BPA or artificial ingredients and scented with essential oils rather than unnatural fragrances or perfumes. And the best part? Each bar is only $6.50. In addition to soap, Oregon Hemp Works also makes massage oil, deodorant and soap specially formulated for bathing dogs. Their products are created with a deep love for the hemp plant and its benefits, both for consumers and for the planet. Benjamin hopes that, unlike the depiction in Fight Club, hemp and hemp products can inspire genuine curiosity, open mindedness and widespread wellness. Oregon Hemp Works products can be found online at www.oregonhempworks.com.

At Deep Roots, passion for cannabis is the driving force. This dispensary keeps business local and puts a fresh spin on what a cannabis retailer can offer. With discounts for students, veterans, seniors and people in the cannabis industry, Deep Roots prioritizes organic, ethical and sustainably grown flower.
N
ew industries go through a grace period. Before familiarity sets in, the novelty of a new experience gives it a fresh sheen like a brand new coat of paint. Cannabis dispensaries, as you might have noticed, tend to demonstrate this phenomenon. When they first began setting up shop, you never knew exactly what to expect when you walked in to pick up some flower. Now, each new dispensary you explore can feel as predictable as the last. While they’re far from lacking quality service and top-notch products, there’s a recognizable go-to, hip-yet-sterile aesthetic that starts to feel stale. Deep Roots is not that dispensary. The locally-owned, Springfield-based company has a vibe that will surprise you on your first visit. While the building is unassuming from the outside, Deep Roots customers are treated to an expansive space upon entering. “We wanted to create a space with a sense of sophistication,” says Deep Roots owner Joshua Fowler of the shop’s unique look. With elaborate chandeliers that nearly descend all the way to the floor from Deep Roots’ 40-foot ceiling, it’s safe to say they accomplished their goal. The red and black color palette that dominates the space creates a relaxed yet elegant aura that makes the shopping 12 | GREENEUGENE.COM
experience that much more enjoyable. Fowler’s other inspiration comes from the medical side of cannabis. As a customer in the cannabis industry, he originally became interested in the medical benefits about five years ago. Having grown and extraction in past, Fowler decided to combine his skill for interpersonal communication with a passion for cannabis. Deep Roots was the result when he took his knowledge to the retail side. First and foremost, Fowler and his team at Deep Roots strive to be fun and personable. By creating a welcoming environment that emphasizes customer understanding of their products, the dispensary has built a reputation as heavily customer-focused. Though recreational sales have opened the door to a wider acceptance of cannabis in Oregon, stigmas around cannabis continue to exist. It’s a dilemma that’s been stuck with the industry since its birth, and Deep Roots deals with the hurdle by sourcing good products. “Quality has always been our minimum standard. We make sure the quality on all price tiers is going to be great,” says Fowler. By visiting growers before striking deals to sell their product, the Deep Roots team ensures that each partnership meets their quality standards. “I make sure everything we put on the shelf is something I would want to give to my dad,” Fowler says.
It’s a passion for cannabis that Fowler has cultivated throughout his life that keeps him focused. As a college student, Fowler found cannabis to be a useful tool to get through the experience of school. When he looks back on his time in school, he wishes he’d had a resource like Deep Roots to maximize his cannabis experience. The knowledge he and the rest of Deep Roots have now is the kind of guide that comes in handy for college-age users when navigating the differences between the terpenes and THC content of each strain. Now, a large demographic of Deep Roots customers consists of college students looking to use cannabis for their studies. Educating people on how to use it effectively is easier than ever with legal recreational use. When first experimenting with what strain was right for his tastes, Fowler found that following his gut was a better tactic than sticking strictly to THC content. “I bought a 13 percent (THC) strain because my nose kept saying, ‘Get this one,’” Fowler says. “It was perfect for me; completely calm but not sedated. It was the start my recognition that there’s more to cannabis than just THC. It was a motivator to keep learning.” If there’s one thing he wants customers to know, it’s to trust their nose. Teaching customers to trust their senses and go with what speaks to them is key to getting the most out of a cannabis experience. Fowler says that not everyone has been receptive to that method, but Deep Roots is slowly trying to teach its effectiveness. “Do your due diligence to find something that works best for you,” he says. Fowler considers Deep Roots a culmination of passions for cannabis, supporting the local economy and using business savvy to aid customers. Not only does he want to personally succeed, but he strives to build an environment where others can as well. With a small core group of eight employees, Deep Roots is a place where every team member can excel. After all, the budtenders do a lot more than just sell weed. The time they spend with customers to help them find their best possible cannabis product heightens the experience and spreads the word that Deep Roots has a superior customer experience. “Coming from the customer side of the industry, it’s all about word of mouth,” says Fowler. Building relationships with suppliers is an elemental part of the Deep Roots business model. Fowler sees the value in supporting one another in the long run. At the end of 2017, the prices of grower’s products dropped dramatically, which created a situation where dispensaries could quickly stock up on product for a fraction of the cost. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, Deep Roots decided to take it as an opportunity to grow relationships with their vendors. Rather than buying low-end products to get a high-end mark up, they continued to support the vendors they had existing business relationships with and wanted to see survive. As a result of these relationships, Fowler feels confident that his business is offering the very best
Quality has always been our minimum standard. local product on the market to customers. “Local is really our goal. All our money stays here in the community,” says Fowler. For example, the glassware Deep Roots sells is sourced locally. Another perk of Deep Roots’ unique space is it makes it a great venue for events. Initially, hosting live music and other events wasn’t part of the Deep Roots priority. But with a wide-open floor plan, it occurred to them that the space would be a perfect fit for it. By spotlighting and sponsoring local artists, Fowler and business partner Braden Smith figured they could also bring in a new customer base from the artists’ fans. With Smith’s involvement in the local music scene as well as playing in local acts such as Soul Vibrator, it wasn’t difficult to make the transition. Before long, Deep Roots started hosting monthly events and became a platform for local artists like Connah Jay, DJ Stoggrd and the band One Dollar Check, who hosted an album release party at the dispensary. Additionally, they’ve played host to a wide range of non-musical affairs, including a recent Valentine’s Day speed dating event called Speed Date and Chill. Coming up, Deep Roots will continue their event tradition by hosting their annual 4/20 celebration. In honor of cannabis’ biggest day, Deep Roots will host vendors like Wyld Edibles and Fox Hollow, an all-day set of musical acts, and food catered by local favorite Bates Steakhouse. The event will offer a variety of 4/20 deals, including 30 percent off glass and accessories, 20 percent off extracts, cartridges, edibles and topical products, and 15 percent off all flower. However, 4/20 is far from the only time that Deep Roots offers deals on their wares. Each day of the week there are daily specials on different products as well as offering a 10 percent daily student discount. For now, Fowler’s goals for Deep Roots don’t involve extensive franchising. Rather, he’s more interested in perfecting every detail of the existing shop and doing the best possible work they can with GREENEUGENE.COM | 13

Drip Sweets Ice Cream
At this point, humankind has found a way to put weed in just about everything you can think of. Have we gone too far? Nah. Edibles are popular for many reasons; their potency and easy dosage process, as well as being a great alternative to smoking, make them a hot commodity. Whether you’re taking the first steps into finding the right edible or a seasoned cannasseur trying to branch out, these edibles are a fun way to get a great high.
It’s not a strange story to hear of someone lighting up a joint, taking a few long puffs and then, before they know it, ending up with a half-eaten pint of ice cream in their lap. One of the top five dangerous munchie cravings, a sweet treat like gelato or a cone is often reached for to ease cottonmouth and rumbling stomachs. Why not cut out the middleman? Drip Sweets, a Portland-based marijuana candy company, brings us exactly that: cannabisinfused ice cream. Offered in two classic flavors, salted caramel and cookies & cream, this is the perfect solution to a bad case of the munchies. With the serving sizes conveniently located on the packaging itself, dosing is easy-peasy with this edible. Even downing the whole carton won’t leave you bedridden. Drip Sweets sends a message of positivity, letting your imagination run free and truly enjoy your experience, whatever it may be. If you’re not sold already, this is an all-female run company, founded and run by women who are passionate about cannabis and satisfying sweet cravings. You can find Drip Sweets at local dispensaries like Mary Janes, TJ’s Organic Provisions and Modern Forest.

Brownie Recipe Brownies are a cult classic in both the cannabis world and among the general population, renowned for their diverse recipe possibilities. The best thing about DIY edibles is that you have complete control over how much weed is actually going into the product, and you know how much you can handle as an individual. Making edibles at home can be risky business, but with the proper knowledge and preparation, you’ll end up with homemade brownies that can satisfy your sweet tooth and send you to the moon at the same time. You can substitute your favorite brownie recipe or add in extras like nuts or caramel, but here’s a consistent one to follow to get started. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a baking pan of your choice with nonstick spray or butter. Melt 4 ounces of unsweetened chocolate in a mixing bowl and combine it with the cannabutter, 2 cups of sugar, a dash of salt and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Add 3 eggs individually and mix in between each until everything is combined. Finally, add in 1¾ cups of flour and mix one last time. Pour into your greased pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, depending on your preference and oven. Let cool and serve in small squares at a dinner party, or eat them all to yourself. We won’t tell.

This sweet treat is the perfect movie popcorn pairing or after-dinner relaxer after a long day. Depending on your tolerance, just one or two of these cups will be the perfect body relaxer and provide a mellow high of giggles and coziness. For the more experienced, eating them together could be the recipe for a solid night of sleep and an especially delicious dinner, but be sure to pay attention to your own body and start slow to ensure a positive experience. Dr Jolly’s peanut butter cups conveniently split up the dosage between several cups in each package, so it’s easy to take a few nibbles and see how it makes you feel. Bonus tip: keep a bag of unmedicated Reeses Cups on hand in preparation for the munchies so you’re not inclined to just swallow the others whole. Magic Number Ginger Beer This craft-brewed beverage is topping the charts of weedinfused treats with it’s bubbliness and savory ginger flavor. Blazing the trail of the “cannabis revolution,” Magic Number produces this out-of-the-box experience locally in Bend at their Canna-Brewery. Similar to another infamous cannabis product of theirs, infused cold brewed coffee, medicated ginger beer has flooded the shelves of dispensaries around Oregon as the latest and greatest way to get a sweet high. The drinks are as magical as they are refreshing, made up of fresh Peruvian ginger and pure cane sugar to add a little sweetness. Sold in 12 oz single-serve bottles, this local company makes it even easier for the consumer by putting the magic number right on the bottle. Available in 3mg, 10mg and 25mg, there’s a dosage for all types of connoisseurs — although you do have to have a medical card to qualify for the highest dose as it’s not for the faint of heart. A smooth combination of indica and sativa, these tasty beverages are sure to make a float on the river just a little bit closer to perfect.
