Coach Graham said, “There are very few student athletes that I have ever had the pleasure to coach that are
as well-rounded as Colby. He has not only helped his team win two back-to-back State Championships, but he has earned multiple individual athletic honors along the way. This by itself is quite an achievement, however this young man helped to be a manager for the girls’ soccer team because he loved being around the game. He also somehow found time to log more than 270 hours of community service. Seeing him pull young kids aside at practice to give them pointers shows just why his teammates elected him as a team captain this year. But what really made this student-athlete stand out to me was not only his academic and athletic success ... but the fact that he makes time to lead a bible study class each Saturday morning with his peers. He may very well be the most well-rounded student· athlete I have had the pleasure to coach.”

He was elected Mr. GHS superlative by peers. Colby was named to the All-District First Team and All-Region First Team in soccer his sophomore year. His volunteer, community service and extracurricular activities include Class President for four years; soccer team captain junior and senior years; starting goalkeeper sophomore, junior and senior years; All-District first team sophomore season; All-Region first team sophomore season; student council four years; led Kindness Committee within council; National Honors Society Vice President; girls soccer manager and assisted as goalkeeper coach junior and senior years; travel soccer starting goalkeeper four years, and team captain junior and senior seasons; high school cross country best newcomer award freshman season; Young Men’s Bible Study, leading Bible study Friday mornings for soccer teammates with 12 players active in the group; Greene County Partnership Greeneville Youth Leadership; Greene County Partnership Greeneville Youth Council Member; Personal Hygiene Drive junior and senior years; led worship music at First Baptist Church Vacation Bible School for past several summers and worship music for FBC VBS at Greeneville’s Boys and Girls Club; participated in FBC youth group and worked many Judgment House presentations, traveled on several mission trips to Alabama and Cincinnati with church youth, and traveled on mission trip to Tybee lsland with Trinity United Methodist. Colby was nominated by coach Jerry Graham, who said, “There are very few student athletes that I have ever had the pleasure to coach that are as well-rounded as Colby. He has not only helped his team win back-to-back state championships, but he has earned multiple individual athletic honors along the way. This by itself is quite an achievement. However, this young man helped as a manager for the girls’ soccer team because he loved being around the game. He also somehow found time to log more than 270 hours of community service. Seeing him pull young kids aside at practice to give them pointers shows just why his teammates elected him as a team captain this year. But what really made this student-athlete stand out to me was not only his academic and athletic success, but the fact he makes time to lead a Bible study class with his peers. He may very well be the most well-rounded student athlete I have had the pleasure to coach.”

Gateway Ford Coach of the Year
BRAD WOOLSEY This past season, Brad Woolsey coached Greeneville to a 31-6 record and the school’s first basketball state championship with a 47-46 win over Jackson South Side in the Class 2A title game at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Woolsey was promoted from assistant coach to coach of the basketball team in 2010 and was named athletic director in 2014. Woolsey’s ties to Greeneville and Greene County run deep with his family’s name in the area dating back 200-plus years. Woolsey played basketball for Greeneville, graduated in 1996 and played basketball at Carson-Newman University where he met his wife, Melissa, who also played basketball at the school. After college, Woolsey never really had thoughts of being anywhere other than Greeneville and returned as an assistant coach on the basketball team in 2001. “When I was a senior in high school, I think it was the National Honor Society ceremony, they had you come up on stage in the old auditorium and you kind of told what you wanted to do in life,” Woolsey said. “I remember at 18 years old saying, ‘I want to teach. I want to come back here and coach.’” In his 11 seasons as Greeneville’s coach, Woolsey has compiled a 231-123 record. He also led the Greene Devils to the state tournament in 2014 when they reached the semifinals and in 2020 before the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Randy Richards, Greeneville’s athletic director when Woolsey was promoted to coach, isn’t surprised by Woolsey’s success with the program. “Everything Brad does, whether he’s in the classroom, coaching or living his personal life, he’s just always had outstanding character and has been a role model for kids,” Richards said. “When you’re talking about high school players, it’s natural for them to be up and down emotionally. One of the biggest characteristics you look for in any coach is somebody who can be a rock for them, a constant. Brad provides that for them and they respond to him.” During Greeneville’s state championship win in Murfreesboro, that was on full display.

It is both a difficult challenge and a great responsibility to hold the life of a child in your hands. Some days are easy and straightforward... “just don’t let go”. Other days are less so. That’s when the child needs the right words more than they need your handholding. All we can do is give them what we believe they need at that moment and pray that God will finish the work as He promised. Congratulations to all of the students, parents, friends and teachers who are always up to the challenge of making a difference in the lives of our young people. Lennie Lawson (with grandchild Henry)
