Extra Mile Coach Of The Year Award

BRAD WOOLSEY T

he Extra Mile Coach of the Year Award, presented Bachman-Bernard Chevrolet Buick GMC, honors the coach of the year that has exceeded the expectations of coaching. The 2022 Best of Preps Coach of the Year Award goes to Coach Brad Woolsey of Greeneville High School. For the second straight year, Greeneville boys basketball coach Brad Woolsey is the Best of Preps Coach of the Year. Woolsey’s Greene Devils won their second straight state championship in March with a 77-48 victory over Jackson South Side in the Class 3A title game. The Greene Devils won their last 17 games of the season to finish 31-6 overall for the second straight season. Known as a player’s coach, Wool-

sey gets the most out of his roster on the basketball court while also educating his players on the game of life. Under Woolsey’s guidance the past three years, the Greene Devils have proven two bonafide stars can exist on the same high school team. Ja’Kobi Gillespie, a Belmont University signee, and Reid Satterfield, a Tusculum University signee, became the only two players in Greeneville history to surpass 2,000 career points. Since the 2018-19 season, Greeneville has gone 29-1 in the postseason. The Greene Devils have won four district titles and four region championships during that time, winning sectionals the past three years to qualify for the state tournament. One of Greeneville’s finest moments this season came in December at the Arby’s Classic. The Greene Devils pulled off a 76-72 upset of Florida’s Dr. Phillips, then the 17th-ranked school in the country that boasted Kansas, Florida and Mississippi State signees. Woolsey was promoted from assistant coach to coach of Greeneville’s basketball team in 2010 and was named athletic director in 2014. His career coaching record at Greeneville stands at 262-127. Woolsey’s ties to Greeneville and Greene County run deep with his family’s name in the area dating back 200-plus years. Woolsey played basketball for Greeneville, graduated in 1996 and played basketball at Carson-Newman University where he met his wife, Melissa, who also played basketball at the school.
