PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTISE

GIVE ME ALL THE

WEDDING CHAOS

Justise Petty professional photographer, wife, and mother of two boys discovered her passion for photography after purchasing her first camera when she graduated high school in 2015.

Initially, she took photos of her family capturing lifelong memories especially after the birth of her children. Soon she realized that her photography was beginning to become a passion rather than just a hobby.

Justise said, “It clicked one day that I could do this for other families while making a little money to help our family out. Little did I know that six years later I would be a full-time photographer.”

Being one of eight children, Justise has tremendous support from her family and they play an essential role in helping her balance work and home.

She said, “I definitely count on my village! From helping me with building sets for sessions, blowing snow above clients’ heads during sessions (thanks mama), to keeping my kids on long wedding days. I could not do this without them. My husband is the most supportive man! He continues to push me and believe in me even when I am ready to throw in the towel. I wouldn’t have made it this far without my village!”

Browsing on her website, Photography by Justise,

one can see her talent in capturing the beauty and joy during precious moments in the lives of others. Her dedication and passion have led her to become a sought-after photographer in her community

One aspect that sets Justise apart is her commitment to fostering a sense of community over competition in the photography industry. She believes in surrounding herself with like-minded individuals who support and uplift one another. Among her mentors, her friend Lauren, from Lauren Reeves Photography, has played a significant role in shaping her career.

against breathtaking natural backdrops of Hawkins County, other parts of gorgeous East Tennessee and beyond.

Justise not only captures memories to provide for her family, she also gives back to her community. ‘ ’

“Give me all the wedding chaos! I do well under pressure and don’t let a lot of things bother me. Wedding days fluctuate and you’ve got to be able to go with the flow.” While her niche lies in weddings, she also enjoys photographing families and other special occasions. While most of her work is in East Tennessee, Justise’s reputation has allowed her to work with people from across the globe.

Justise mainly works independently photographing weddings but she is also a contracted photographer with an elopement company based in the Smoky Mountains. Justise captures beautiful love stories

One of her “famous” sessions was taking engagement photos of Hawkins County native and former University of Tennessee star basketball player, John Faulkerson and his fiancé. Although that particular

Justise has captured countless beautiful moments over the years, but one wedding in particular stands out; Margaret and Hobert’s wedding, held inside of Holston Valley Hospital.

She said, “I have photographed a lot of moments and memories for people over the years. Weddings, proposals, child births, birthday parties, family moments but none have stuck with me like their wedding. Throughout the 10 years they had been together and all the trials and tribulations they faced with Hobert’s sickness, the love they had for each other was unmatched. After receiving the news that Hobert’s health was declining, they turned

the darkest moments of their lives together into something so extraordinary and beautiful. I had the honor of being able to witness and photograph them getting married and coming together as one. It was a true inspiration to me! There wasn’t a dry eye around Holston Valley that day.”

Justise’s goals include continuous growth and investment in herself and her business. She aspires to create a successful venture that she can pass down to her children or future generations in hopes that they love it as much as she does.

Justise not only captures memories to provide for her family, she also gives back to her community. During the Christmas season, she uses a portion of her profits to shop for families who need extra support during the holidays.

A REALITY COUPLE’S DREAM BECOMES QUARRY COVE RESORT AND MARINA

Located on Cherokee Lake between the beautiful hills of Hawkins County sits the perfect lakeside oasis called Quarry Cove Resort and Marina. It is owned and operated by the husband-and-wife duo, Ben and Kimberly Saari.

The idea for this enchanting resort came to Ben and Kimberly after their numerous adventures exploring the great outdoors in their trusty camper van.

Kimberly said, “We would try different places on anniversaries or other special occasions. We would stay in funky off grid cabins, hot springs with teepees or yurts that you had to hike to. We wanted to create

something similar like that on the lake here that people could enjoy without the hassle of traditional camping. We wanted to make it easy, hence camping with a touch of glamour, GLAMPING! We love the lake life and knew this would be the perfect place to celebrate that.”

The couple made their dream into a reality and now they offer the most glorious glamping experience and much more!

Moving to East Tennessee from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Ben’s hometown, and with Kimberly’s roots in Virginia and North Carolina, Hawkins County felt like the perfect place to call home. They fell in love

with the charm of the area and decided to purchase the old Marble Hall property and the vast surrounding acres on Cherokee Lake. Their vision included not only the resort but also a marina, a dream they hoped would be approved by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority).

With Ben’s background in the ski industry and Kimberly’s experience in real estate, they trusted their entrepreneurial instincts to guide them through the process. They poured their hearts into building the business together with unwavering determination and their love of nature.

In the spring of 2022, Quarry Cove Resort and Marina welcomed its first guests to experience the marvels of glamping. The resort offers four unique glamp sites featuring luxurious bell tents.

We had an amazing, relaxing family weekend this summer at Quarry Cove! The tents were cozy and comfortable, and the atmosphere was quiet and serene. We built a fire and roasted s’mores Friday night and rode jet skis and paddle boarded all day Saturday! Lots of fun was had by everyone there! Ben and Kim were wonderful made sure we had everything we needed to have a fantastic time! We live only 15 minutes away, and absolutely loved the little getaway! I would recommend enjoying a retreat to Quarry Cove!

Each tent is perched on a private deck with stairs leading to it. Inside, guests are greeted with lavish amenities such as heavenly Nectar mattresses on custom elevated platform beds, electricity, mini fridges, bedside lamps, and even Nespresso coffee makers.

The tents are also adorned with cozy rugs, wireless phone chargers, flashlights, and a lake map. For those seeking a culinary adventure, each site had its own fire station equipped with a grill and fire pit. Should guests desire a small break from outdoor activities, they can curl up in bed and watch a movie under the starlit sky.

As the resort gained popularity, Ben and Kimberly realized the importance of catering to different needs and preferences. They introduced a Micro transforming A-frame cottage, offering guests a cozy getaway by the lake. Guests can enjoy the outdoor experience by opening up the unit or retreat into its warmth and seclusion when desired.

A charming bathhouse stands between the lake and the glamp sites, featuring two bathrooms, two outdoor showers, and two vanities with sinks. Towels are provided for the guests’ comfort. The resort also ensures privacy with a gated retreat and a private parking lot, conveniently situated close to the tents.

Quarry Cove Resort and Marina have expanded its offerings to accommodate larger groups and families. Now that multifamily renting has become popular, all four tents and the A-frame can be booked together, allowing loved ones to create unforgettable memories together in this haven of nature. Bookings for the following season started pouring in months in advance, a testament to the resort’s success and the happiness it

brought to its guests.

The guests who flock to Quarry Cove Resort and Marina are a diverse mix hailing from different corners of the country. Locals from Hawkins County and neighboring areas continue to show immense support, making the resort a favorite getaway spot for everyone.

To enhance the experience, the resort offers specialized items such as charcuterie boards and tailored themes for tents and birthday parties, ensuring that every occasion is celebrated in style. S’more and firewood kits are also available, making evenings by the fire even more delightful.

Quarry Cove Resort and Marina not only cater to leisurely relaxation but also offer amazing lake activities. Guests can rent jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks to explore the waters of Cherokee Lake.

Lessons and tours are available for those seeking guidance. A wake surf boat also provides exhilarating lake excursions. Local wake surf pros even host camps and lessons to help guests improve their skills and make the most of their time on the water.

Looking ahead, Quarry Cove Resort and Marina has exciting plans for this spring. Last year, they received approval from the TVA to establish a community marina, adding to the resort’s offerings. Once completed, the marina will include 18 slips available for seasonal rental, boat service, and storage upon request.

Guests will be able to fully immerse themselves in the joys of the lake life. Valet boat services will be provided to ensure convenience, and slip options will be available for overnight guests.

None of this would have been possible without the

unwavering support of the Hawkins County community. The Rogersville Chamber of Commerce played a pivotal role in Quarry Cove’s success, and the Saaris’ are immensely grateful for their guidance and backing.

In return, Ben and Kimberly strive to give back to the community by offering classes and events for both locals and visitors. During special occasions, food trucks come to the Cove to offer a variety of flavors for all of those in attendance. With the couple’s depth of commitment to preserving the beauty of nature they organize an annual lake cleanup at Quarry Cove which brings awareness to the importance of taking care of the lake and all of nature.

As the sun sets over Cherokee Lake, illuminating the picturesque landscape in hues of orange, purple, and pink, Quarry Cove Resort and Marina continues its mission to create unforgettable experiences for its guests. Ben and Kimberly stand proudly, watching their labor of love flourish and knowing that they have

brought a touch of glamour to the world of camping.

Amidst the sounds of water hitting its banks, the enchantment of glamping lives on, forever captivating the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to visit Quarry Cove Resort and Marina.

CHRISANNA ACRES CREATIVITY LIVES AT 1949 WOOD CREATIONS

When Chris and Roxanna Ogle moved to a farm near Mooresburg in 2021, Chris’ woodworking skill appeared to be the income producer for the couple. But through their creativity and effort they keep adding additional products.

Chris and Rexanna lived in the Asheville, N.C. area. They had a nice place there. Chris remembered “We had a house near Asheville, a house my father had built. It was on a couple of acres out in the country. The city began annexing closer and closer to us. There was more and more traffic.”

He added “They were building a development right

across from us. Crime in the area was getting worse.” Rexanna said “We didn’t want the development across from us.” The Ogles had a garden and some chickens, but wanted a larger piece of property.

Chris remembered “We looked for a place in our price range and the right acreage. We found this property but is went off the market, so we kept looking. This place was what we were looking for, forty acres with two houses. One day, we were looking on line and it was for sale again, the buyer had backed out.” They were able to purchase the property on Highway 31.

Chris said their realtor, Ron Cook, went “above and beyond” to help them acquire the farm.

Chris concluded “this property was meant to be for us.”

1949 WOODWORKING

Chris had been doing carpentry before he started into woodworking. His dad was a carpenter and his grandfather was a cabinet maker. His first attempt at woodworking came when his mother requested that he make her a “chicnic table”, which is a chicken feeder made in the shape of a picnic table. He built it, and then a few more, which he sold. Chris recalled “We sold them and grew on from there. I decided I liked woodworking; I find it relaxing.”

Chris has a roomy woodworking shop on the farm. He prefers to make smaller items. Some of his items include spatulas, spoons, do knifes, scrapers, cell phone amplifiers, barn stars (another idea from Chris’ mother), cutting boards, planters, seed boxes, whisks, coffee scoops, noodle boards, measuring spoons, cornhole boards, and signs.

He also makes seasonal items. At Halloween he made wooden ghosts, pumpkins and Frankensteins. At t CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30

After establishing the woodworking business, the Ogle’s creativity has led them into offering several other products from the farm. When setting up dist

plays at craft events, they now offer canned vegetables, jellies, jams and salves. Rexanna said “We’ve really been blown away by how the canned vegetables and jellies have sold.”

Some of the home-canned vegetables and fruits include green beans, apples, pears, sweet pickle habaneros (called “Cowboy Candy”) and chow-chow. Rexanna said “We hadn’t thought about selling canned items, we had only canned for ourselves.”

Jellies have been a big seller. One reason is the unique flavors the ogles offer. Rexanna explained “We don’t do strawberry and grape. We do flavors that others don’t.” Some of the flavors are blackberry bourbon, pineapple mango habanera, blueberry lemon, guava, Indian chai, pina colada, rose, raspberry lavender, honeysuckle lavender and corncob. They also have apple butter and peach butter. At shows the Ogles offer free samples of the jellies. Chris said “We get new samples from every batch so you taste what you buy. You get to try it before you buy it.”

Chrisanna Acres also makes salves. They are made from ingredients collected on the property or from essential oils. Some salves they make are Jewel Weed, Antibiotic, Muscle rub and Migraine & Headache. Rexanna added “We try it ourselves so we know it works.”

They have two additional products. One is a natural bug spray. Chris also came up with a wood conditioner or “board butter”, used on any wooden product that touches food. It is made from “thieves’ oil and a cocktail of essential oils.” Chris created the board butter to use on his wooden products but now offers it for sale.

Another item they offer at shows are Chris’ chocolate chip cookies. They are a favorite of customers of all ages. They are also selling freeze-dried candies.

THE BUSINESS EXPERIENCE

Chris remembers “We did our first show at Amis Mill. We loved meeting the people. At the shows we try to be open and inviting.” Rexanna added “Some people just stop and talk. We’ve been accepted. We’re so grateful for the people who have bought from us. We’ve made lots of friends.”

Chris added “We love hearing testimonials from customers. I try to make things that sell for $20 or less, so the average person can afford to buy them. The

customers have become like extended family.” Rexanna said “We’ve had repeat customers. A lot of people follow the shows and they come back and buy again.”

Some of the area shows they have participated in are Amis Mill, Bulls Gap, Riverfront in Surgoinsville, the armory in Rogersville, the Overhome Festival and Three Bulls Farm. People also contact them with orders. They have shipped to Australia, Alaska, Germany and Canada.

The Ogles have found what they longed for in Hawkins County. They work full time on their own property creating unique products. Rexanna said “We wouldn’t have thought it would take off and do as well as it has.” Chris added “It’s a full-time business, so far it’s working!”

Chris said “We love it here, it’s much more relaxed.” Rexanna reflected “God has watched over us, he’s had his hand in all of this.”

BULLS GAP

(THE BAND, NOT THE TOWN)

LOVE OF MUSIC, DECADES OF

FRIENDSHIP

AND A NEW CD

Scotty Arnold and Jerry Vincent have been friends since elementary school. That friendship is still going strong.

In high school they decided they would form a band. They enjoyed quick success, touring and meeting music industry people. They are still creating music and will soon release a new cd.

Their passion for music is stronger than ever and the story of the band, Bulls Gap, moves into a new chapter.

THE BEGINNINGS

Scotty and Jerry started elementary school together. Jerry remembered “we’ve known each other all our lives. My mother went to school with Scotty’s mom

and dad.” They are natives of the Bulls Gap/St. Clair area. Scotty was a good football player in school and had scholarship offers. He suffered injuries, three ankle surgeries and three knee surgeries, that hindered him from further pursuing sports.

Jerry said “My family was musically inclined, my mom had us in church and taught us to live right and do the best you can. I remember being at mamaw and papaw’s house, everybody was together playing music. I fell asleep on the floor most nights. My papaw once gave me a quarter to sing a song.”

Scotty had early exposure to music. He said “my grandmother taught me chords on a guitar.” He also learned to play piano.

He and Jerry started a band while still in high

school. They found success quickly. The band was originally called “Southern Wings.” It included guitarist Chuck Morrisette and drummer David “Goob” Burns. One of their first projects was when Rogersville teacher/artist Ella Jo Bradley asked them to write a song in celebration of Tennessee’s “Homecoming 86.” Scotty remembers “When we were in the second year of high school, we won the Service Merchandise Battle of the Bands. We did a video for the Discovery Channel about missing children.”

CONTINUED SUCCESS

Southern Wings opened shows for Molly Hatchet and Sawyer Brown. They bought their first bus. They played on the road, doing a series of shows raising money for fire departments and rescue squads. Jerry

said “We were young guys straight out of high school, making $1000.00 a show on the road.” They acquired their second bus, a Greyhound 4104. Scotty said “It cost $132.00 to fill the bus up, and we could drive 1600 miles.”

Scotty and Jerry were on “Be a Star” in 1991. They had opportunities to play at Dollywood and Opryland. They had a record deal with Malaco Records in 1993. Jerry remembers that they played about 250 shows a year and “we sold t-shirts, cd’s and pictures.” The spent a lot of time in Nashville and met many music industry people. Their first cassette album had members of Leon Russell’s band on it. Jerry said “Up until 2008 we had an office in Nashville.” Scotty added “we had one of the top 100 Christmas songs on CMT in 2008.”

t CONTINUED FROM PAGE 37 CONTINUED ON PAGE 39
Bulls Gap In Scotty’s cabin studio.

Scotty said “Nashville changed the name of the group. Hee Haw star Archie Campbell often talked about his hometown, Bulls Gap. People found out where we were from and they’d say there’s those Bulls Gap boys, so we got to be known as Bulls Gap.”

Bulls Gap got to tour extensively, opening for Vern Gosden, Keith Whitley, Shenandoah, Pirates of the Mississippi and Confederate Railroad. Scotty added “We know Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry of Alabama really well.”

In 2007 they released an album, Keep on Believing. It featured nine original songs including Country Kind of Cowboy, Countrier Than This and Rain’s an Everyday Thing. Favorable reviews came in but problems were coming to the music industry.

INDUSTRY PROBLEMS

After years of remarkable good fortune, economic problems had a big effect on Bulls Gap. Scotty remembers “in 2008, the stock market crash hit the music industry really hard. Record labels went under.” Scotty and Jerry kept going, writing and recording and performing as much as possible. Scotty added “We had started working on a new album when Covid hit.

A PERSONAL TRAGEDY

Jerry reflected “My wife, Belinda Gail, died two years ago.” She had always been supportive of Jerry and his music. Jerry said “I don’t know where I’d be if it weren’t for the music. It was hard to pick up a guitar again, but I know she would want me to keep playing. It’s hard to do sometimes, but I know God has a plan. The good Lord has something for me to do; I’ve got to do it.”

BULLS GAP TODAY

Scotty and Jerry continue to create and perform their music. Scotty has a recording studio in a log cabin. He has been involved in managing Kaitlin Baker. He also started his own publishing company, Hooterville Publishing. Over t CONTINUED FROM PAGE 38

the years, many musicians have played with them, but the core of Bulls Gap has always been Scotty and Jerry. They have a lot to look back on; they have toured, they have met music legends, and they have created their own songs. They are finishing up a new cd. The goal today is the same as it was when Scotty and Jerry were in high school; to touch people with their songs and entertain people with their performances.

It’s remarkable that the friendship and musical partnership between Scotty and Jer-

ry has lasted so long. They are truly two of the good guys involved in music. With the new cd coming out, Jerry said “We’re trying to get some new music out, get back on the road, and pick up where we left off.

Scotty added “There are three things I’ve wanted to do; play sports, hunt & fish, and play music.”

Jerry reflected “I just love playing music, it’s in me.”

Scotty summed things up; “Music is in my blood. I play music because I love it. Don’t give up on your dreams. We’ve been around the horn, man! We’ve got to finish our journey.”

DESIRE TO SUCCEED TEACHING TEAMWORK, LEADERSHIP, AND A COACH GLADSON

Forrest Gladson spent much of his life in sports, and now he has the job he always wanted: football coach, basketball coach and athletic director at Rogersville City School.

EARLY LIFE

Forrest is the son of Brenda and the late Larry Gladson. Larry was a high school athlete and a Rogersville Warrior football player. Forrest came from a family of athletes. His uncle, David Gladson, was a high school football phenom before a tragic auto accident ended

his life. Forrest recalls “I remember going to Florida and Louisiana to watch my cousins, David Kenner, Thomas Floyd and Aaron Kenner play little league baseball.

Davis said “I was involved in sports since I was knee high.” His introduction to organized football was on Little League football Red Team, coached by his father Larry. He played flag football then until the sixth grade. He then played for the Rogersville City School Warriors, coached by Larry Pierce. Forrest was a run-

HIGH SCHOOL

Forrest played his high school football as a Cherokee Chief at Cherokee High School near Rogersville. The freshmen team he played on had a 7-1 record. Forrest played at Cherokee for coach Mike Sivert. In his sophomore year Forrest was a running back. In his junior and senior years he was a cornerback and kick returner.

COLLEGE

After graduating from Cherokee, Forrest attended Walters State Community College in Morristown for a period. He then enrolled at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia and pursued his college football career as an Emory & Henry Wasp. Forrest said “Jim Brooks and family were instrumental in helping me get into

Emory & Henry.”

He attended the Division 3 school from 2000-2004. In his freshman season, the Wasps won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship. That season Forrest remembers he played “mostly on special teams as a kick returner.”

As a junior he won the “most improved” award and as a senior he won the leadership award. Forrest played running back and kick returner in his junior and senior seasons. At Emory & Henry he played for coaches Lou Walker and Fred Self.

Travis had some big moments in his college playing days. In his sophomore year, he had his first college touchdown against Guilford College. He scampered 71 yards with a screen pass for a touchdown. In that game he carried 13 times for 74 yards and caught 4 passes for 79 yards. That year the Wasps lost to Western Maryland in the playoffs. Forrest recalls “Coach Sivert (Forrest’s high school coach) wrote me a letter after that game. That year the Wasps were 8-3. Forrest has a championship ring for the ODAC championship.

college. He found an opportunity near home, at Bulls Gap School. He remembers “Bulls Gap was my first job; I was hired two weeks before school started.” He coached football, basketball, and track at Bulls Gap. He coached the Bulls Gap Bulldogs from 2004-2011. Forrest said “Bulls Gap was great! Everybody worked well together. We had great support from parents and the community. I loved working for the principals Beth Holt, Maureen Morelock, and Sharon Pinkston Southern.”

One memory that stands out from the Bulls Gap days was in basketball; the 2007-2008 Bulldogs upset powerful Mary Hughes School in the conference tournament.

MOVE TO ROGERSVILLE CITY SCHOOL

Forrest said “I’ve always enjoyed being around sports and being around kids, making an impact on kids. I knew in middle school that I wanted to be a coach someday.” Coaching was his natural next step after

been at Bulls Gap seven years.” He added that “One of my goals had always been to coach at the city school and be like Coach Pierce.” Forrest made the move to Rogersville City School in 2012. He coaches football and basketball. He was the assistant athletic director before becoming athletic director two years ago.

He had immediate success in football. In 2012 the RCS Warriors were 9-0. The team has had additional unbeaten seasons in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2022. They were 7-1 in 2023. Since 2012 the Warriors record in football is 93-12.

In basketball, the Warriors are 167-102 since Forrest came there in 2012.

Forrest said “I’ve had some great mentors; Dennis Renner, Bill Walker, Homer Cauesy, Mike Sivert, Jeremy Parrott, and many others at Cherokee, and my cousins David Kenner, Thomas Floyd, and Aaron Kenner.” He also credits the “great student-athletes and the parental support I’ve had. It’s been great to see kids go on to play in high school and college.”

With his success, other schools have tried to lure Forrest away. He spoke about one offer; he said “I prayed about it and decided this is where I’m supposed to be.”

THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER

Forrest has had great success on the field and court, but what really stands out is that he cares about the kids. He said “Wins and losses are great, but we try to teach the boys to be better men and citizens.”

Forrest said that the city school administration “is fully supportive in academics and athletics, the always do what is best for the student athletes, and they come to games. We have a good program here, built by generations of coaches, built on tradition, the expectations of administrations before us.” He added “We hold the students accountable, not only in athletics, but in all aspects of life. The people who love you hold you ac-

countable; parents, teachers and coaches.”

Forrest said that for a coach, a supportive wife is important; “you’re away a lot.” He and his wife Lauren have three daughters, 11, 8, and 5, and a boy on the way. He added “I enjoy watching my own kids play; sometimes you miss that while you’re coaching.” He also said that he has been blessed with good assistant coaches.

Forrest concluded “Coaching is time consuming but really rewarding. If you don’t equip them for life, you can’t be judged by wins and losses, in the grand scheme it doesn’t mean that much. Coaching and teaching is a calling; you’re loving other peoples’ kids.”

An unbeaten Warriors team.

SURGOINSVILLE A PICTORIAL TOUR OF

tSurgoinsville is a pretty, quiet little town in central Hawkins County. It lies just off of Highway 11W beside the Holston River. Surgoinsville was incorporated in 1815.

It was named for a Frenchman, Major James Sur-

guine, an early settler. Surgoinsville has its own museum. It offers live music, cruise-ins, and a festival. Many of Hawkins County’s most historical homes are located around Surgoinsville.

PRESSMAN’S HOME ARTISTS

CREATES REPLICA ARTWORK YOU CAN DRIVE

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG CAR

In the spirit of “eccentric inventor” Caractacus Potts who built the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from a wrecked race car, artist Randy Costantino took a bunch of old scraps and junk to create a unique replica.

“Chitty America” has a 1902 Oldsmobile chassis, 1933 Pontiac front and rear end, 1917 Ford Wheels, and a 1967 Chevy drive train. The hood was made from a stainless steel refrigerator, and the passenger compartment is made of plywood.

Pressmen’s Home residents may have seen Costantino’s “Chitty America” tooling up and down Rt. 94 at

25 mph.

Constantino, who lives across the road form the old Pressman’s Home trade school building, is a painter and sculptor known for making life size replicas including a tank, a train, a WWI airplane, and a cannon that actually fires.

But that was yard art, and you’d have to go to his house to see it. “Chitty America” is artwork that Costantino can drive to you.

He started on “Chitty America” about a year and a half ago, and by the time he’s finished he’ll have about $5,000 worth of materials and untold hundreds of

man-hours into his latest creation.

Younger generations may not be familiar with the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang starring Dick Van Dyke, which was based on a 1964 book by Ian Fleming.

In the novel, the car is described as “… a 12-cylinder, 8-litre supercharged Paragon Panther. They only made one of them and then the firm went broke.” The car crashed in a race, burst into flames, and was later purchased by Potts, who rebuilds it at the insistence of his children, who like to play in it.

Similarly, Costantino was motivated to build his replica because he wanted something to play with. But, the real fun for Costantino is in the building.

“I like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” Costantino told the Review earlier this week. “I think it’s probably the most famous car in the world. I just like the look of it. It’s a good story, and just wanted to be part of it. So, there it is.”

and specially modified parts and pieces.

“If you look under there you’ll see a little tiny Chassis. Then the rest of it I added on. What I used was two big long I-beams from a mobile home. I just joined them in and bolted them.”

“It is in the Chitty style, but I didn’t try to imitate Chitty too much. I put on what I thought was right, and what I had laying around the house. If you want to do something like this, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on it. That hood, which is Chitty-like — I put all those little swirls on it so it would look better. That’s a recycled commercial stainless steel refrigerator. I just kind of build on what I have.”

A PATCHWORK OF PARTS

The headlights located next to the windshield are from the original 1902 Oldsmobile chassis. The headlights on the front grill are from two different vehicles, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at them.

‘WHAT I HAD LAYING AROUND’

Ian Fleming said the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car was inspired from a series of aero-engined racing cars built in the early 1920s that were called “Chitty Bang Bang” after the sound they made while idling.

“There’s a handful of these (replicas) out there if you look on the Internet, and every one of them is different,” Costantino said. “I think the reason is, you can’t get plans for it. You have to go by your eye and figure it out. People have shorter ones, longer ones, different features. This one is 16 feet long. The wheel-base is 12 feet, so it’s a good size wheel base. Kind of make sit comfortable to drive.”

Costantino’s original chassis is a 1902 Olds, and that’s that’s the make and model its registered and tagged under at the County Clerk’s office.

But, there are pieces from several types of vehicle on “Chitty America”, not to mention a lot of home-made

“I wanted them brass, and they were chrome, and I thought, how am I going to make these brass. I didn’t know what to do. Then I noticed there was brass under a scratch, and I started working on them, and they’re already made of brass. Someone had chromed them, so I removed the chrome.

The brass grill is made from door kickplates.

“To buy a piece of brass this size was beyond what I could do.”

He also acquired a real 1926 Pontiac hood ornament, which he purchased from a man in Rogersville, at a very reasonable price.

The wood spoke wheels are from a 1917 Ford.

“They’re 106 years old. I don’t drive it too fast because you’re driving on sticks. They’re matched up to a 1933 Pontiac front and rear end.”

As for the drive train Costantino went a little more

Although it stil lacks a few details before it’s complete, Pressmen’s Home residents may have already seen Costantino’s “Chitty America” tooling up and down Rt. 94 at 25 mph.

modern.

It’s a six cylinder 250 motor with a regular single barrel carburetor from a 1967 Chevy pickup with an 350 turbo automatic transmission. Luckily the 1933 front and rear end lined up with the Chevy parts.

‘BOAT-STYLE’ SIDING

One of his favorite pieces is the saxophone horn.

“I wanted something interesting there. Chitty had a snake (for a horn).”

At the back is a 1700s era wooden trunk that he found in a thrift store.

Although Chitty America doesn’t fly, the driver’s compartment includes faux airplane gauges which were originally coasters.

The “boat-style” siding around the passenger compartment is made of plywood.

To achieve the pinstripe affect he applied thin strips of tape to the sides, stained it, removed the tape, and then varnished it. The faux rivets are simply thin brass punch-outs from a paper hole puncher glued into place.

There are door handles to open the back seat doors, but they’re just for show. There are no actual rear doors.

“Too much engineering for putting a door in,” Costantino said. “They look like they work, and that’s what matters. You jump in to get in to the back seat, which means it’s for kids. It’s not for me.”

On the back he painted the name of the car: “Chitty America”.

RR: Where’d you find all this stuff?

“Some of it I had. Some of it just kinda comes to you by osmosis. People know you need it and it comes your way.”

RR: Where are you going to take this thing?

“I don’t know. The fun for me is in the building. I’ll drive it a little while, and I’ll probably send it off to somebody.”

RR: How much would you ask for something like this?

“I haven’t got a clue. It won’t be $10,000 or $20,000. I’ve got more than that in it in labor. I’m going to get my labor out of it. We’ll just have to see how popular it is. These days there’s just no telling. I didn’t really

build it to make money because that’s not what it’s about. It’s about the fun of building it. If it’s worth $10, that’ll be that. If it’s worth $100,000, that’ll be that.”

ROGERSVILLE Events 2024-25

There’s a lot going on in Hawkins County in 2024, and now that the first flowers are in bloom it’s time to mark your calendar to remember your favorite upcoming events.

The following list of 2024 events is a work in progress. There’s no final date as of yet for Rogersville’s Fall Bike Nite, and the Surgoinsville Riverfront Festival dates have yet to be finalized as well.
