Perfect Starts on Page 4 after last year, but Willie dropped in our laps and just meshed with our kids so well. It was a great fit.” Carmichael proved to be almost as valuable on the defensive side of the ball. He also started at safety on defense. In the state championship game he picked off three Trezevant passes and won the Most Valuable Defensive Player award. On offense, he finished with 1,801 yards rushing, passed for 706 and 12 touchdowns and scored 30 touchdowns himself. The 59 total touchdowns accumulated by Spradlin and Carmichael helped the Devils set a new state scoring record with 748 points on the season. Greeneville’s spread offense in the past few seasons had depended on a lot of passing and that meant having good receivers, an area where GHS lost heavily after 2009 to graduation. But the newcomers stepped up in 2010. “We used the spread offense, but we were very multiple this year,” Ballard explained. “We spread the field, and that spread the defense, and we got some of our runners in open space. But we were able to use our two-back set, and our “beef” set, as the season

went along and we went deeper into the playoffs. “Our receivers were effective when we needed them. They made plays when called upon, and they knew how to block downfield. They helped our backs break some of those long runs.” Taylor Shuffler and Brennan Hollowell, both juniors, each caught 12 passes this year and combined for nine touchdowns between them. Kelby Wilson, another junior, caught nine. The team’s senior in the wideout corps, David Sandoval, was also effective with six catches. While the offense was scoring points in bunches, ask any coach who lined up a team against the Greene Devils this year, and they’ll tell you the same thing; they were a two-headed monster. Their ability to strike quickly for points was one thing, but trying to move the football against their defense was often useless. After losing their most valuable defensive player last year, linebacker Nick Craney, there were some early concerns about this team’s defensive ability. But those notions were quickly dispelled. Greeneville will return two Division I lineman prospects next year in defensive end Jamel Hall and defensive tackle Terrell Rollins. Both were keys this season. Junior Garrett Rambo gave the Devils a solid defensive end,

and junior Ethan Malone was the other tackle that made the line hard to move around. Even with the loss of Craney, the linebackers proved to be very capable, led by senior Chaz Story. Juniors Austin Perkins, Derrik Thornton and Daniel Epperson were hitters, and Spradlin got his share of licks in, too. With speedsters Carmichael and Shuffler roaming the secondary along with junior Koryei Jefferson, opposing quarterbacks had a hard time throwing the deep ball. “Our defensive backs took away the big plays,” Ballard said. “If an opponent did break a big one, we had people who could run ’em down. We didn’t give up many plays this year over 20 yards.” Teams who hoped to get a leg up on the Devils with kickoff returns were disappointed. Junior kicker Ben Ogle was one of the best in the state, with his kickoffs normally sailing into the end zone for touchbacks. He also converted 94 of 97 extra point kicks on the year. He drilled a 49-yard field goal in the state championship game. “People normally put their quickest and best backs in there for returns,” Ballard said. “More often than not, Ben left them standing there as they watched the ball go into the end zone. When you make a high school team

start at the 20, it’s much harder.” Sophomore Trey Clark had one of the loneliest jobs for the Devils this year as he served as the team’s punter, and there were several games where he didn’t even have to make an appearance. The state championship has been won, so what do you do for an encore? “Oh, there’s always room for improvement,” Ballard quickly said. “We’ll hit the weight room right after Christmas, and go to the gym and work on agility drills. It starts right back. We’ve set the bar high. Expectations will remain high. We have a great group coming back, but we have lots of areas to improve on.” The Devils will have a new set of non-conference foes next year, including the state’s Class 2A champion Alcoa, old Inter-Mountain Conference rival Morristown West and the Science Hill Hilltoppers. A fourth non-conference game is still being sought. “I’d like to thank all the fans for the incredible support,” Ballard said. “We got off the bus at Maplewood (in Nashville) and saw our stands packed with green. We took the field at Cookeville and our side of the field was full. That’s awesome. “And we want to thank the school administration. They’ve supported us all the way.”

‘A Mr. Football Play’

SUN PHOTOS BY PHIL GENTRY

In this series of photos from the state championship game against Trezevant in Cookeville, Greeneville’s Willie Carmichael (top left) leaves his feet about the 4-yd. line as he dives for the end zone. The second photo (top right) shows him getting a hit from Trezevant’s Johnny Malone (15). In the next photo (bottom left), Carmichael sails high into the air, and in the photo (bottom right) he lands in the end zone, almost on his feet. Coach Caine Ballard described it as a “Mr. Football type of play.” Carmichael won the state’s Class AA Mr. Football Award.

High-Scoring Greeneville Pounds Trezevant In Finals BY JOE BYRD ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

COOKEVILLE — Greeneville’s preparation to win the 2010 Class 4A BlueCross Bowl didn’t start this past summer. It started almost a year ago to the day in the same spot where the Devils celebrated Saturday night. Last season’s second place finish stoked a fire that burned in the Devils for a year, and it all came out in a 60-12 dismantling of Trezevant here at Tucker Stadium where Greeneville claimed its first ever football state championship with a perfect 15-0 season.

Class 4A BlueCross Bowl

Greeneville 60, Trezevant 12 The post game interview room for the winners and losers is split in half with one side decorated and awash with light for the champions. The other side is a lonely spot where the second place team must sit and ponder what might have been. Greeneville coach Caine Ballard said when the Devils had to sit and watch Giles County celebrate in 2009, it ignited a year of determination to be the ones who could call themselves champions. “We had to sit on the opposite side of this room last year with tears in our eyes and sick feeling,” Ballard said. “I think when they walked out of here, they were hungry to come back. Our motto all year has been ‘finish.’ I don’t know who came up with that, but it put a lot of pressure on us. It is sweet to finish it out.” Judging by the way Greeneville started Saturday night, there was never any real doubt how it was going to finish. The Devils held Trezevant to threeand-out on the game’s opening possession. Greeneville scored in four plays on its first drive, and the rout was on. Senior B.J. Spradlin scored the Devils’ first touchdown on a 17-yard run. Before the night was finished, Spradlin added two more on runs of 14 and 18 yards. He rushed for 235 yards on 31 carries, earning Offensive MVP honors for the state championship game. “Last year I walked off this field with tears in my eyes because I had a broken heart. This year I walked off with

Spradlin was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the BlueCross Bowl game. tears of joy,” Spradlin said. “I’m more excited than I’ve ever been. This is the best feeling I’ve ever had. Last year, our goal after we lost was to come back here and bring the gold ball home and not the silver one. That’s what we did.” Spradlin said Greeneville’s game plan was simple, and the Devils executed it well. “We wanted to mash them,” he said. “Our running game has worked all year. Why stop now? We just came in and played our game. When our offensive line blows open holes like they do, I don’t know how you could stop it.” Greeneville rolled up 347 yards rushing and had 393 yards of total offense. Greeneville’s defense held the Bears to 269 yards. The Devils’ defense helped set up a quick second touchdown. Willie Carmichael grabbed the first of his three interceptions, which earned the senior Defensive MVP honors, to stop Trezevant’s second possession. Carmichael then led the Devils on an eight-play scoring drive where he hit Taylor Shuffler on a 17-yard touchdown

‘Last year I walked off this field with tears in my eyes because I had a broken heart. This year I walked off with tears of joy.’ B.J. SPRADLIN GHS Senior/BlueCross Bowl Offensive MVP pass to make it 14-0 at the end of the first. The Devils quickly added two more touchdowns at the start of the second when Spradlin scored on a 14-yard run and Carmichael scored from 11 yards out to make it 28-0. Trezevant finally got on the board when Lemarcus Stewart got behind Greeneville’s defense and took a pass from Cameron Mayfield 72-yards to the end zone. The Bears tried for two, but Greeneville’s Chaz Story broke up the pass.

Greeneville scored once more before halftime on what Ballard later called “a Mr. Football play.” Carmichael broke loose from 23 yards out around the right side, leaping from the 4 before getting hit in mid air and flipping into the end zone. Ben Ogle’s extra point made it 35-6 at halftime. Ogle had a standout night, putting most of his kickoffs into the end zone and a couple of those through the uprights for show. He was seven-ofseven on extra points. Ogle hit a 49yard field goal for the only scoring of the third quarter to make it 38-6. The Devils upped their lead at the start of the fourth when Austin Perkins scored on a seven-yard pass from Carmichael. The Devils went for two, with Spradlin carrying the ball in to give Greeneville the all-time single-season state scoring record. Trezevant managed another touchdown, a 55-yard pass from Mayfield to a Suterryck Montgomery. They went for two again, this time Carmichael made the stop. The Devils weren’t done scoring. Spradlin added an 18-yard touchdown run and Story scored from three yards out to make it 60-12. Ballard said he felt coming into the game there was no way anyone was going to stop the Devils. “It would have taken the Pittsburgh Steelers or somebody,” he said with a laugh. “We came out ready to play. We felt more comfortable, all week last week and this week, having been here. I think once we got here, we were ready to go. It was a tremendous effort by everybody.” Trezevant coach Teli White was less pleased with the effort of his team. “We didn’t do anything. It’s always easy to have a victory like that when nobody does anything,” White said. “When you go out and lay down and let a team do like they want to do ... the object in the game of football is to stop what they do best. We failed to do that and kept looking for excuses. We kept looking for everybody else to answer. The kids just did not find an answer tonight.” Part of Trezevant’s problem was the Bears kept putting themselves into a hole with bad penalties. Four of their possessions started off 1st-and-15 because of procedure penalties before PLEASE SEE FINALS | 13

The Bears were f lagged a total of 16 times for 129 yards, including one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and six dead ball personal foul penalties, resulting in one ejection, for late hits. Trezevant had a tough time dealing with Greeneville’s defense, and the game plan was to not let the speedy Bears into the clear. “With their speed, we had to focus at the line of scrimmage and make sure we didn’t let them get outside or get up field. It was a challenge, said Jamel Hall. Perkins led Greeneville’s defense with eight tackles. Story had five. Ethan Malone, Hall and Daniel Epperson had four each. Malone forced two fumbles. Garrett Rambo had a fumble recovery, and Walker Troy recovered one. Carmichael had his three interceptions. He also had 80 yards rushing with two touchdowns, 47 yards passing with two touchdowns, punted once for 43 yards and had 11 yards in returns to help secure Greeneville’s first ever state football championship. “We had a great football team before he moved in with us, but he put us over the top, Ballard said.

Greene Devils Survive Toughest Test At Maplewood BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR

NASHVILLE — There were those who wondered how the Greeneville Greene Devils would react when they got into a close game this year. Now they know. They just give the football to their battering ram of a tailback, senior B.J. Spradlin, and let him do his thing. Spradlin turned the momentum of the game around by carrying the ball 12 straight times in a crucial fourth quarter, time-consuming drive that led to a Greeneville field goal, and the Devils held off Maplewood 17-7 here Friday night in the TSSAA State Semifinals. The victory sends the undefeated Devils (14-0) back to Cookeville for the second straight year and a berth in the Class 4A state title game next Saturday. They will take on Trezevant of Memphis for the championship at 4:30 p.m.

Class 4A State Semifinals

Greeneville 17, Maplewood 7 The Devils, one of the highest scoring teams in TSSAA history, have steamrolled opponents this year, including the three playoff foes they had faced before taking on Maplewood. But the Panthers, who finish at 122 on the year, gave Greeneville a real test with a crunching ground attack. The Devils saw a 14-0 halftime lead cut to 14-7 in the third period, and the Panthers seemed to have gained control of the game as the fourth quarter began. Starting at their own 17, Greeneville gave Maplewood a constant dose of Spradlin, who barreled his way all the way down to the Maplewood 13, picking up five first downs and eating precious minutes off the clock, 7:40 to be exact. The Panthers finally got to Spradlin and stopped him short on a fourth down play from the 13, but Ben Ogle came on to knock through a 28-yd. field goal with 3:23 left in the game to up the lead to 17-7 and solidify the victory and a berth in the title tilt next week. “I can’t describe the feeling (of a return trip to the state title game),” Spradlin said on the field after the

game. “We’ve got some unfinished business to take care of.” Greeneville lost a heartbreaker to Giles County last December in Cookeville. Spradlin said he knew there was some concern among fans who worried how the Devils would react in a tight game. “It’s something we’ve worked on all year,” he said with a smile. Concerning the fourth quarter drive, Spradlin credited his blockers. “I’m tired, but we kept alternating backs in there to block for me (Chaz Story and Jamel Hall). They kept knocking people out of the way, and the offensive line did just a great job. We wanted to keep getting three or four yards a whack to run the clock, and it worked.” Coach Caine Ballard knew there would be games like this if his troops wanted to reach the championship, and he had said before the game that the key would be to not make turnovers. Greeneville made only one, a second quarter fumble by Willie Carmichael. But Maplewood threw up three interceptions, and picks were made by Carmichael, Story and Austin Perkins. Maplewood had two backs rush for over 100 yds., workhorse Stanley Hagan with 109 and speedster Ladarius Vanleer with 112. The Panthers finished with 238 yds. compared to 207 for Greeneville. But Spradlin finished with a gamehigh 154 yds. on 27 carries, and Carmichael completed a key touchdown pass in the second period. Maplewood kept the football most of the opening quarter but got nothing to show for it. They drove from their 36 to the GHS 13 before Wagner Serrano missed on a 32-yd. field goal. Greeneville took over and proceeded to drive 80 yds. in seven plays. Spradlin broke free on a 56-yd. touchdown run, slipping some tackles at the line of scrimmage before breaking into the clear and willing his way to the end zone. Ogle made the PAT for a 7-0 GHS lead with 10:05 left in the second quarter. The scoreless first quarter was the first time this year the Devils hadn’t scored in the opening period. After the GHS score, Maplewood appeared to be rolling again, with Hagan peeling off a pair of 13-yd. runs. But the Panthers decided to go to the airways, and that was a mistake. Car-

SPRADLIN michael stepped in front of a would-be receiver and made the pick, returning it from the GHS 35 all the way to the MHS 24. The Devils took it on to the house. Facing a third down and 14 from the 16, Carmichael fired a pass over the middle that Taylor Shuffler came up with in the end zone, despite double coverage from a pair of Panther defensive backs. Ogle’s PAT made it 14-0 with 4:02 left before intermission. Story got his pass interception on Maplewood’s next drive, returning the ball 25 yds. But the Devils missed out on a chance to get another score when they lost a fumble at the Maplewood

37. The half ended with no more scoring. The Panthers took the second half kickoff and got a 32-yd. run from Vanleer before Perkins came up with his pass interception at the GHS 15. After a Greeneville punt, the Panthers would not be denied this time, starting at their 37 and scoring in only five plays, with Vanleer taking it in from 30 yds. away. That’s when Maplewood seemed to gain the momentum, especially when they held the Devils on a 3-and-out and forced a punt, taking over again at midfield. But Hall came up with a defensive stop on third down, knocking Hagan down for a 4-yd. loss and forcing a punt. That’s when the Devils took over at their 17 with 11:03 left in the game, and they kept the ball for the next 7:40 behind the work of Spradlin before Ogle threaded the needle on the field goal. Maplewood couldn’t pick up a first down after the kickoff, and the Devils ended the contest in victory formation, taking a knee to run the final seconds off the clock.

Greene Devils Rip Gibbs 42-3; Now Head To Maplewood BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR

Two of the state’s finalists for Mr. Football put on quite a show, but Greeneville had many more weapons and continued their playoff blitz Friday night at Burley Stadium, running away from the Gibbs Eagles 42-3 to advance to next week’s semifinal round. Willie Carmichael of the Greene Devils, the Mr. Football candidate, rushed for 154 yds. and three touchdowns and passed for another, and senior tailback B.J. Spradlin added another 102 yds. and two scores as GHS won their 13th game of the year without a loss. Now the Devils must take their playoff show on the road, traveling to Nashville next Friday for a showdown at Maplewood, who beat David Lipscomb in the quarterfinals.

Class 4A State Quarterfinals

Greeneville 42, Gibbs 3 Gibbs’ talented tailback Andy Hibbett, the other Mr. Football finalist, ran wild in the Eagles’ run-oriented attack, carrying the ball 33 times for 239 yds., but he never crossed the goal line. Nobody did for Gibbs, which left Coach Caine Ballard all smiles after the game. “It was just a tremendous effort,” Ballard said. “I’m trying to be excited and not look down the road at what’s next. Credit Gibbs’ offense; they ran it very well. But credit our defense, too. We bent but we didn’t break.” The duo of Carmichael and Spradlin was just too much for the Eagles to overcome. Despite losing the yardage battle to Gibbs 397 to 301, Greeneville was dominant. “It was a great effort by our Mr. Football finalist, but really I think we have two finalists at Greeneville,” he said, referring to Spradlin. “And that’s not taking anything away from Mr. Hibbett. He’s a great back in a really good offensive scheme. Spradlin credited the offensive line. “I can’t say enough about the o-line,” he smiled. “You can run consistently with blocking like that. Pounding the

We had to read their defense, and our coaches made some great adjustments.” Spradlin was also a standout on defense, a side of the ball he likes just fine. “I love to play defense,” he added. “I like to play both sides of the ball.” Ballard said the offensive line picked up Gibbs’ schemes very well. “They bring a lot of pressure,” he said. “We picked it up well. BJ and Willie found seams.” Gibbs ran the ball all over the middle of the field, finishing with 397 yards of offense but no touchdowns. Every time they got close, Greeneville would buckle down. “When they got close, we would just say that we can’t allow them to score,” said junior lineman Jamel Hall, a defensive leader. “It was one of our better games (on defense) but we’ve got to have better ones from here on.” Gibbs knew they couldn’t make turnovers against the Devils, and they had three of them, two lost fumbles and a pass interception in the end zone that prevented a score. Their first fumble came on their opening drive when quarterback Chris Legg lost the handle on the exchange and Gavin Stewart recovered for GHS at the Devil 40. The Devils scored in five plays, with

‘It was a great effort by our Mr. Football finalist, but really I think we have two finalists at Greeneville.’ CAINE BALLARD GHS Coach Carmichael getting free on the corner and scooting 26 yds. for the score. Ben Ogle’s kick was true for a 7-0 lead with 1:28 left in the opening quarter. The Eagles responded with a drive that resulted in their only points of the night, marching to the 8-yd. line before Ryan Hunley converted a 25yd. field goal with 8:52 left in the second frame to cut the gap to 7-3. Things began to turn south for the Eagles at that point. A line-drive bouncing kick was fielded by Spradlin at the GHS 25, and he returned it 45 yds. all the way to the Gibbs 30. Four plays later, Spradlin powered his way up the middle from 17-yds. out to score. That moved the score to 14-3. Gibbs picked up two first downs before they were forced to punt and

the Devils took over at their 35. On second down, Carmichael sprinted to the right corner, turned on that burst of speed, gave an old-fashioned stiffarm to the last tackler in his way, and scored from 62 yds. out to up the lead to 21-3 with 4:35 left in the half. Gibbs kept the ball for 14 plays, starting at their 20. Hibbett and Legg alternated carries and got big chunks of yardage, but when the drive reached the GHS 20, the clock was clicking down toward the end of the half. Gibbs burned all three of their time outs in the final minute, but Legg spiked the ball to stop the clock on a third and 5 situation from the 16-yd. line with 15 seconds remaining. Gibbs chose to try for the touchdown and Legg’s pass was well out of the end zone as he received a tremendous rush from Hall. The Eagles took the second half kickoff and faced a fourth and 3 from their own 39 and went for it. Legg was stopped a yard short of the first down. Greeneville normally thrives on breaks like that, and this time was no exception. They moved to score on a 2-yd. blast by Carmichael and upped their lead to 28-3 with 8:20 left. Again the Eagles kept the ball for 14 plays, but again they were denied. Facing a fourth and goal from the 7, Legg’s pass into the end zone was tipped and intercepted by Austin Perkins, who came charging out of the end zone and was gang tackled at the 26. Gibbs, obviously frustrated by the turn of events, was f lagged for four unsportsmanlike penalties, (one player was ejected) giving the Devils 50 yds. in penalties (it apparently should have been 60, 15-yds. for each, but who’s counting?) and GHS set up shop at the Eagles’ 24. Spradlin scored on an 11-yd. run up the middle, the lead grew to 35-3, and the “Boys of Fall,” Kenny Chesney’s alma mater that prompted the hit country song, was out of gas. They lost a fumble on their next possession that Taylor Shuff ler picked up at midfield. Carmichael took to the airways this time, firing a 28-yd. strike to David Sandoval in the deep corner of the PLEASE SEE GIBBS | 19

Hibbett never stopped running, peeling off a 39-yarder to get Gibbs down to the 4-yd. line, but again they were unable to punch it in. With the clock running continuously, as has been the norm for Greeneville’s games in the second half this year, the fourth quarter ended quickly. Now the Devils must take their show on the road next week to Nashville. “It’s tough to prepare to go on the road deep in the playoffs to what I’m sure will be a hostile place,” Coach Ballard said. “We need all our fans to make the trip and make it feel as ‘homey’ as we can.” The winner next Friday in the semifinals will advance to the state championship game in Cookeville on Dec. 4.

Greeneville Pounds Fulton, 35-0; Next Up: Gibbs BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR

Pound, pound, pound ... That was the Greene Devils’ battle plan from the outset Friday night against Knox Fulton at Burley Stadium in the second round of the TSSAA Playoffs. The plan worked just fine, and the Devils have moved on to the state quarterfinals with an impressive 35-0 shellacking of the Falcons. GHS will be at home to Gibbs, who beat Scott County 48-45 in overtime, next Friday. Even in the first half when the Falcons stuffed just about their entire defense around Greeneville’s line of scrimmage, just daring the Devils to throw, they stayed true to form, pounding Fulton with a steady diet of runs from B.J. Spradlin, Willie Carmichael and occasionally Chaz Story.

Class 4A Playoffs 2nd Round

Greeneville 35, Fulton 0 Then in the second half, the Devils made the Falcons pay dearly for their stacked inside the box defense when Carmichael threw for 111 yds. and two touchdowns and GHS pulled away from a 14-0 halftime lead to win going away. Greeneville used a three-back offense much of the game, with Spradlin and Story lined up on either side of Carmichael in the shotgun formation. “The 3-back set ... we’ve worked on it all year and hadn’t showed it too much,” GHS Coach Caine Ballard said. “We thought we could pound them and wear them down a bit. Field position was bad for us in the first half, but we finally broke them and won the football game.” Quarterback Carmichael said the Devils ran the “two-gun offense.” “Yes, sir, that’s what we call it,” the senior signal-caller, who this week was named as a state Mr. Football finalist, said after the game. “The plan was to hit’em in the mouth early.” The Devils managed 249 yds. rushing in the game, 120 of those by Spradlin and another 70 by Carmichael. All the quarterback’s 111 passing yards came in the second half as GHS blew the game open.

“Carmichael is on a different level than a lot of kids,” Ballard said. “People wanted to know if he can throw it. I think he showed he can throw it. And we had people catch it and make plays when we had opportunities. A lot of different people made plays, too.” Spradlin said the Devils stuck with their running game throughout the first half, just as the game plan indicated they should do. “We were in bad field position,” he said. “But they have a bunch playing both sides of the ball and we thought we could wear them down some if we kept running hard.” Fulton had lost four games coming into the contest, but each loss was against a formidable foe. They showed on their first play from scrimmage, when Demetrious Thomas rambled for 36 yds., that they were not to be taken lightly. But after that big play, the Devils stopped the Falcons on fourth and one when Spradlin hit quarterback Ben Winters for no gain. Ballard had nothing but praise for his senior leader. “B.J.’s just a pure football player,” Ballard said. “He’s been around here a long time and I’m sure a lot of our opponents will be glad when he’s gone. But I hope he can hang around for three more games.” It didn’t take the Devils long to get on the board. Starting at their own 34, they scored in three plays. Spradlin sprinted up the middle for 29 yds. and Story barreled for two more to the Fulton 33. Then Carmichael took the snap, darted right, then back left, and it was “see ya later” as he scooted 33 yards to the end zone. Ben Ogle was true on the PAT and it was 7-0 with 8:03 left in the quarter. Fulton drove for two first downs to midfield, then pinned up the Devils at their own 5-yd. line with a 43-yd. punt. GHS couldn’t move and Trey Clark had to punt from the back of the end zone. The ball went out of bounds at the 40 and the Falcons were in good shape. But on second down, Winters threw a pass toward the end zone that Koryei Jefferson picked off. Three plays and a punt later, Fulton was within striking distance again at midfield. Winters hit Fred Elder for a 5-yd. pass, but the ball popped free when he was hit and Greeneville’s Daniel Epperson picked it off in mid-

This time the Devils took advantage of good field position as they converted a fake punt to get a first down. Austin Perkins took the snap as the Devils were lined up to punt in a fourth and 4 situation, and the surprise play picked up 12 yds. A 36-yd. run by Carmichael was followed by a slashing, determined run up the middle by Spradlin for the score and a 14-0 lead after Ogle’s PAT. Fulton had a real chance to make things interesting just before intermission. They drove down to the GHS 4-yd. line after getting good field position on Thomas’ 47-yd. kickoff return. Facing a fourth down and 1 from the 4, Fulton’s Winters tried a pass, but Jamel Hall got a hand up and smacked the ball sideways incomplete. That would be Fulton’s last real threat of the night as the Devils dominated the second half. They got a good kickoff return by Story out to midfield to start the third period. Seven plays later, Spradlin broke some tackles on his way to a 12yd. TD run and a 21-0 advantage. Fulton pinned the Devils up to their 1-yd. line after a 56-yd. punt. But GHS

proceeded to move 99 yds. in only two plays, a series that seemed to take the life out of the Falcons. Carmichael did it with his arm. He dropped back in the end zone and threw to Derrik Thornton, who rambled 54yds. to the Falcons’ 45. After a 5-yd. Fulton penalty, Carmichael found Taylor Shuffler open in the secondary and hit him in stride for a 40-yd. TD aerial and a 28-0 lead after Ogle’s PAT. The Devils scored their final TD on a 17-yd. pass play from Carmichael to Kelby Wilson in the deep corner of the end zone early in the final period. The only thing GHS lost in the game was the services of defensive tackle Terrell Rollins for next week’s game. He and a Fulton player were ejected in a scuffle that broke out mid way of the final period after Winters was sacked by a hard-charging Hall. There was a threat for both benches to clear and things could have gotten worse, but coaches quickly restored order. “In the heat of battle things happen, and it’s a tough blow to not have Terrell next week,” Ballard said. “But somebody else will step up.”

With the clock now moving continuously, GHS’s final score of the night came late in the third when Story intercepted a Bumpass pass at the ER 43 and returned it all the way for a score. The two teams exchanged fumbles, with Walker Troy recovering one for GHS, then Deante Doaks picking up a ball lying loose in Greeneville’s backfield at the 44 and returning it to the GHS 11. East Ridge went on in to score on a 2-yd. run by Torrey Hughes. The PAT failed, but the GHS lead was cut to 47-9. The Pioneers were trying to score again as the final seconds were clicking away, but Greeneville’s Michael Lane intercepted a pass at the end zone to close out the contest. Devils Complete Unbeaten Regular Season With Romp Over Claiborne

BY EUAL SHELTON SPORTS WRITER

The Greeneville Greene Devils first mission was accomplished at Burley Stadium Friday night by overpowering Claiborne 56-8 to become only the third GHS team to go through the regular season undefeated. Claiming their second straight Blue Ridge Athletic Conference title with the victory, they are now 10-0 for the season and 6-0 in the BRAC and join the Ty Disney coached 1942 (7-0) team and the Fred Sorrells coached 1998 team (10-0) regular season. Greeneville left little doubt about the final outcome of the contest from the very beginning after Claiborne County fumbled on the fourth snap from center with GHS recovering at the Bulldogs 33-yard line. The Greene Devils struck quick, the first play coming on a pass from quarterback Willie Carmichael to speedy Taylor Shuffler that covered 33-yards and Ben Ogle’s kick for extra point had GHS holding a 7-0 advantage with 10:20 left in the initial quarter. It only got worse for CCHS as Greeneville’s strong defense led by Chaz Story, Garrett Rambo, Gavin Stewart,

Daniel Epperson and Austin Perkins on the scoreboard again as the quarter were limiting Claiborne to three and ended holding a 28-0 lead, but GHS out on each possession. was not through scoring in the opening half. The Bulldogs mounted a six play drive until a fumble recovery by the Week 10 Devils’ Derrick Thornton gave GHS Greeneville 56, Claiborne 8 possession at the Bulldogs’ 40-yd.line. It took GHS just three plays to get to the end zone as Carmichael scored from 25 yards out and a 35-0 lead. Spradlin led GHS in rushing, gaining 106 yards on just eight attempts, all in the opening half. It was a happy Caine Ballard after the contest, saying, “Our goal from the very start back in August, has not been to just get to the state finals but to win it. Anything short of that would be a big disappointment. We said that after getting to the championship game last year, we want a state championship.” Asked how his team came out of this contest in terms of injuries, more specifically defensive tackle Terrell Rollins: “He was in on three series tonight and begging to play more. He’s OK but I didn’t think it was worth the risk after we got off to the quick start. “Don’t ask me about our first opponent for the playoffs, all I can tell you at this time, we’ll be playing at home.” The TSSAA is expected to release the playoff pairings this morning. Asked to compare this year’s team with the team that made it to the championship finals last year, Ballard said, “This team is more athletic and has more overall speed than we had a year ago. But we must stay focused and we’ve been that way over the last five or six weeks and will need to stay that way in the playoffs.”

Greene Devils Roll To 72-13 Blue Ridge Win Over Grainger BY BOO MORROW SPORTS WRITER

RUTLEDGE — Greeneville’s B.J. Spradlin ran for 144 yards on just seven carries and scored four touchdowns, en route to a 72-13 victory over Grainger on Friday. The visitors racked up 408 yards of total offense, of which 397 of them were via the ground game. Greeneville’s defense held Grainger to just 238 total yards and 13 first downs. Spradlin and the Greeneville offense got off to a quick start. After the defense forced a quick three and out, Spradlin took the hand off and showed off some fancy footwork for a big 30-yard gain to set up GHS with a first and goal from the two-yard line. He finished off the drive with a 2-yard rushing TD to give the Devils the early 7-0 lead after the Ben Ogle extra point. On the next Devil possession, Willie Carmichael kept the ball on an option and out ran everyone 73-yards,

untouched for the Greeneville score. On the next Grainger possession, Greeneville’s Jamel Hall recovered a fumble to set up great field position. Spradlin took the second play of the drive and powered his way 17 yds. into the end zone, giving the Devils a 21-0 lead. Down big early in the first quarter, Grainger was looking to get something started. On their first play from scrimmage, they went to the air. Lance Morton connected with Jerrod Bates, who came up with a marvelous one handed circus catch, to get the Grizzlies inside of Greeneville territory. Using the air attack once again, Morton connected with Cody Watson for an 11-yard gain, setting them up with a first and goal from the two yard line. Brennan Hollowell added a reception for nine yards and Shuffler ran the ball twice for 50 yards. Head coach Caine Ballard said he was “pleased with the way the second team played and that it was great for them to get some game experience. The second team played most of the second quarter and the entire second half. Greeneville improves to 9-0, 5-0 on the season and returns to action next week at home against Claiborne.

Carmichael Leads Greeneville To Win Over Black Knights BY JOE BYRD ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

Willie Carmichael rushed for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns to lead Greeneville to a 58-13 win over Chuckey-Doak on Friday night.

Week 8

Greeneville 58, Chuckey-Doak 13 The win keeps the state’s No. 1ranked Greene Devils unbeaten and on pace to defend their Blue Ridge Athletic Conference crown and leaves the Knights needing to regroup if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. Greeneville improves to 8-0, 4-0, while Chuckey-Doak dips to 6-2, 2-2 with two weeks left in the regular season. Carmichael had 15 carries for 343 yards. He scored on runs of 75, 2, 75, 10 and 93 yards. Greeneville amassed well over 500 yards of total offense.

Chuckey-Doak was held to 211 yards, led by 62 yards on 10 carries by Bryce Malone. He also had a kickoff return of 50 yards. Julius Montgomery had 179 all-purpose yards for the Knights with six kickoff returns for 121 and 58 yards rushing. Montgomery, Malone and the Knights started out the way they had it planned with a sustained drive to keep Greeneville from jumping to an early lead. The Devils took a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter when B.J. Spradlin scored from 15 yards at the end of the Devils’ first series and Carmichael broke a 75-yard touchdown. Spradlin had most of his 49 yards on the opening drive, ending with the touchdown. Carmichael’s touchdown was a one-play drive for the Devils when he got to the sideline, picked up a block from Brennan Hollowell and was gone. Carmichael scored twice in the second quarter. Chuckey-Doak prevented another likely score for the Devils late in the first half when Greeneville went for it on fourth down but was denied thanks to a pass breakup by Landon McAmis. That set up the Knights’ first scoring drive which went six plays for 57 yards, ending when Logan Collins passed to a wide open Brandon Marsh for a 35yard touchdown on the next to last play of the quarter. Marsh kicked the extra point himself, setting the score at 28-7 at halftime. Greeneville opened it up in the second half.

The Knights gifted Greeneville short field position twice in the third, fumbling the ball away on the first play of consecutive drives that set up a 20yard Taylor Shuffer touchdown and a 41-yard field goal by Ben Ogle that made the score 51-7 heading into the fourth. The Knights cut into the deficit mid way of the fourth when Malone’s work was paid off with a six-yard touchdown run. Greeneville’s youngsters got in on the scoring before game’s end when Walker Troy scored on a 12-yard touchdown run. Ogle was perfect on seven extra-point attempts for the Devils. Friday night’s crowd was the largest ever at Chuck-

Greene Devils Coast Past Cumberland Gap Panthers, 70-0 BY JOE BYRD

ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

Greeneville scored a season high, racked up nearly 550 yards of offense, had five interceptions on defense and notched its first shutout of the season on Friday night to maintain a lock on the top of the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference standings and the Devils’ No. 1 state ranking. The Devils rolled past Cumberland Gap 70-0 at Burley Stadium, improving to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the conference. Coach Caine Ballard was pleased with the win but knows the team can still be even better. “It took a while to get going,” Ballard said. “We’ve struggled with practice. The intensity hasn’t been there. Part of that is on me. Part of it is on our coaches. Part of it is on our players. Part of it is on our fans. Everybody’s expectations are huge. These games ... we have to maintain our intensity.” Greeneville led 28-0 at halftime. It was the youngsters that really rolled up the big points total, believed to be the most in school history in a single game. Senior Willie Carmichael scored three touchdowns and also had two interceptions. Senior B.J. Spradlin and junior Taylor Shuffler scored two touchdowns each. Shuffler also had one of the five picks. Junior Joseph Tillery, sophomore Tanner Stewart and freshman Zach Finchum all scored touchdowns in the

fourth quarter when they broke long plays against the Panthers. “When those young guys go in, we know the defense is broken down. Their spirit is broken and they aren’t as strong as they were early,” Ballard said. “They played us hard for a while. They are very young and don’t have as many kids, but they played us hard for a little while.”

Week 7

Greeneville 70, Cumberland Gap 0 Carmichael scored the first three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 37 and 34 yards in the first quarter. He scored from 11 yards out to start the second after ripping off a 39-yard punt return. The scoring drives lasted five, five and three plays. Spradlin got his first on a 10-yard run late in the second quarter. What seemed to be the biggest play of the first half was called back on a penalty when Carmichael got the first of his interceptions and took it 90 yards to the end zone, but it didn’t matter because the Devils still had the game well in hand at the break. Carmichael got his second interception on the first play of the second half, setting up a seven-play scoring drive where Spradlin sliced in from the 4. Shuffler got his first touchdown on an interception,

Shuffler got free for a 51-yard touchdown to make it 49-0 at the end of the third. Greeneville tacked on three more touchdowns in the fourth. Josh Tillery got an interception on the first play of the final quarter, setting up a 30-yard touchdown pass from Stewart to Joseph Tillery. Stewart then scored on a 52-yard run, and Finchum scored from 12 yards out. Greeneville kicker Ben Ogle was a perfect 10-for-10 on extra points and put five kickoffs through the back of the end zone. Greeneville’s defense limited Cumberland Gap to negative yards rushing. With the loss, the Panthers slip to 1-6, 0-4 in the conference. The Devils have a big conference game ahead next Friday when they make their first ever visit to ChuckeyDoak’s Black Hole. Ballard said it’s good the way the Devils are defending their BRAC crown, but expects better going into the home stretch of the regular season. “We feel good. We are healthy. West Greene Hangs Tough For 3 Quarters Against Devils BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR

Ho hum ... Look at the Burley Stadium scoreboard Friday night and it would appear that it was another runaway romp for the state’s top-ranked Greeneville High Greene Devils as a 55-10 score was posted at the end of Friday night’s game with cross-county foe West Greene.

Week 6

Greeneville 55, West Greene 10 But as GHS Coach Caine Ballard and everybody else among the near-capacity crowd that watched the game knows, the scoreboard often lies when it comes to the intensity of a game. “It was a win, and we’ll enjoy every win we get,” Ballard said after the game. “But I hope our kids learned a lesson. We told them West Greene would come in here and play hard, and they did. We had a bad week of prac-

tice and it showed on the field tonight. Turnovers, penalties ... ugly ... but we won.” The victory kept the Greene Devils unblemished on the year at 6-0, 2-0 in the Blue Ridge Conference, while the Buffs fell to 5-2, 2-1 in league play. West Greene Coach Joe Case was as upbeat as is possible after a loss. “I’m so proud of how hard our kids played,” he said. “Greeneville is such a good team. We let them have some big plays, but we were hanging in there. We were down 27-10 after three quarters ... still had hope. I thought our coaches did a good job of coming up with a game plan, and our kids executed as well as they could. You look at how Greeneville has dominated everybody this year, and we don’t feel bad at all.” The Devils got three offensive touchdowns from sophomore Taylor Shuffler, two from senior B.J. Spradlin and one each from Willie Carmichael and Tanner Stewart. Chaz Story got one score on defense with a “pick six” on a pass interception. Ben Ogle converted seven of eight extra point kicks. Four of those GHS touchdowns came

in the final period. Carmichael got his score on the game’s opening kickoff when he gathered in the football at his own 15 and raced 85 yds. to score with 16 seconds gone on the clock. Ogle’s kick had the Devils in the lead to stay. But it quickly became obvious that these Buffs had come to play and were well prepared. They got a 50-yd. punt from Cory Lindsey to pin the Devils up inside their own 10-yd. line, and the

Devils couldn’t move out of the shadows of their end zone. They countered with a 53-yd. punt by Trey Clark to turn around field position. Two first down runs by Lindsey and Dalton Boles got the Buffs to near midfield before stalling, and another Lindsey punt had GHS again pinned deep at their own 12. But this time the Devils were able to drive 88 yds. in 11 plays, overcoming a couple of penalties along the way. Carmichael passed 24 yds. to Spradlin, then Spradlin peeled off a 12-yd. run and Carmichael got loose for 15 yds. Shuffler took a pitch around the end for another 12-yd. gain. Spradlin got the touchdown on a 2-yd. plunge, following the blocking of Jamel Hall, Terrell Rollins and Story across the right side of the line. Ogle’s PAT made it 14-0. Greeneville got the ball back on the final play of the opening quarter when Carmichael intercepted an overthrown Lindsey pass. The Devils marched 44 yds. to score again, with the big play a 23-yd. keeper by Carmichael. Spradlin PLEASE SEE WG | 33

WG Starts on Page 32 got the TD on a 4-yd. run again over the right side of his line. Ogle missed the PAT when the ball hit the upright, but it was 20-0. West Greene brought its large following to its feet when they recovered a muffed punt by Greeneville at the GHS 40. Boles got the recovery when GHS’s Kelby Wilson lost the handle. But the Buffs couldn’t score, moving down to the 29 before giving it up on downs. Another GHS fumble late in the half, this one after a completed pass from Carmichael to Spradlin, stalled the Devils. Evan Monroe picked up the loose ball at the 42 and returned it all the way to the GHS 23, but a penalty brought the ball back past midfield and that’s where the first half ended. West Greene never let up after intermission. They took the kickoff and drove from their own 13 all the way to the GHS 14 where Dustin Carter split the uprights with a 31-yd. field goal to carve the GHS lead down to 20-3. The Buffs had little success in the

THE GREENEVILLE SUN GHS FOOTBALL EDITION running game, but they did get some things done through the airways. On the drive for the field goal Lindsey hit five straight passes, and two of them were receptions of the highlight reel variety. The first was for 21 yds. to Monroe, and the second was by a leaping Andrew Julian good for 35 yds. Carmichael was dinged up while playing defense on that West Greene drive and did not carry the ball again on offense in the second half. That meant Tanner Stewart would take over the controls at quarterback and the Devils didn’t skip a beat. He hit Kelby Wilson for 30 yds. Spradlin had a 15-yd. run. Stewart kept for a couple of good yardage runs. Shuffler got the touchdown on a pitch to the outside from 4-yds. out, and Ogle’s kick upped the margin to 27-3. Another muffed punt gave the Buffs hope again. This time Carmichael couldn’t find the handle on a punt and the ball seemed to squirt around forever before Andrew Julian recovered it at the GHS 5-yd. line. West Greene didn’t let this opportunity fall by the wayside. On third and goal from the 4-yd. line, Lindsey fired a pass to Monroe for the touchdown.

Carter’s booted the PAT to close to 27-10. But Greeneville never blinked. They took the kickoff and marched 65 yds. to score. The big play was a 32-yd. run by Spradlin. Stewart got the touchdown on a 12-yd. keeper and the PAT upped the count to 34-10. Sixteen seconds later, the Devils gained some breathing room when Story stepped in front of a Lindsey pass at the 24-yd. line and picked off the aerial, then rambled to the end zone for the touchdown. That improved the lead to 41-10. Boles took the GHS kickoff from Ogle at his goal line and streaked up the middle of the field and might have gone all the way if not for a tackle at midfield by Ogle. Two first downs on a run by Boles and a pass from Lindsey to Johnnie Day got the ball down to the GHS 17, but the drive fizzled out. Greeneville scored in only three plays. Shuffler broke free on a 50-yd. run for the score and a 48-10 lead with 6:04 left to play. The final GHS score came after a punt return of 38 yds. by Wilson down to the WG 30. Greene Devils Run Vikings From Their Castle, 56-7 BY BILL JONES

SPORTS WRITER

BRISTOL — In the Middle Ages, Vikings made a habit of capturing enemy castles, but during the first half on Friday night, the Tennessee High School Vikings were literally run out of their own castle by the visiting Greene Devils to the tune of 56-7. The contest featured the most points scored by a Greeneville High team and the greatest margin of victory over Tennessee High in the 46 -game series between the two schools. Something had to give when the undefeated Greene Devils invaded the historic "Stone Castle" here to take on the undefeated Tennessee High Vikings. GHS was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A entering the game in Bristol while the THS Vikings were ranked No. 5 statewide in Class 5A. The something that gave on Friday night was the Tennessee High

defense. GHS sprinted out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back, largely on the running of Greene Devil QB William Carmichael and tailback B.J. Spradlin. Carmichael finished with 231 yds. on the night while Spradlin rushed for 165 yds.

Week 5

Greeneville 56, Tenn. High 7 Carmichael led the f irst half charge, running for two TDs and connecting with wide receiver David Sandoval for a third score. Spradlin added a fourth TD on a six-yard plunge with 2:06 to go in the second quarter. The Greene Devils extended their lead to 56-0 in the fourth quarter before the Vikings finally scored on a penalty-aided drive against the GHS reserves. Greeneville kicker Ben Ogle was good on all eight of his PAT attempts,

including one from the 15 due to a penalty. While the GHS offense was shredding the Viking defense, the Greene Devil defense bent but didn't break and Greene Devil kicker Ogle repeatedly booted his kickoffs into the Tennessee High end zone, depriving the speedy Viking return men of chances to make big plays. Greeneville had won the pregame coin toss and had deferred possession until the second half. The Vikings appeared headed for an opening possession score, but a promising drive stalled. But a penalty on the first Viking punt put GHS in a hole at its own 15 for its first possession. GHS had to punt the ball back to the Vikings after a seven-play drive stalled. But the Tennessee High offense was again unable to move and punted the ball back to the Greene Devils. On first down from the Devils' 25, QB Carmichael raced 75 yards for a

TD with 5:38 to play in the opening quarter. Ogle added the extra point to stake GHS to a lead it would never relinquish. The GHS lead grew to 13-0 with 8.9 seconds to play in the first quarter on a 29-yard run by Carmichael. Ogle again booted home the PAT. With 5:41 to go in the second quarter, Carmichael hit wide receiver David Sandoval for 34 yards and a TD. Ogle added the PAT to make the lead 21-0. The lead grew to 28-0 on a sixyard run by Spradlin with 2:06 to go in the first half. GHS received to open the second half and marched to another TD in nine plays, with Carmichael getting the last yard on a keep up the middle. Ogle added the PAT to make the GHS lead 35-0 with 8:09 to play in the third quarter. GHS padded its lead to 41-0 with 4:43 to go in the third quarter on a 33-yard run by Carmichael. After Ogle added the PAT, the GHS lead stood at 49-0. Josh Tillery got the final GHS TD of the night on a 32-yard return of a recovered fumble with 7:50 to play in the game. Ogle's PAT made the score 56-0. Backup Tennessee High QB Austin Delph hit running back Austin Rowell with a 19-yard TD pass with 3:35 to play in the game. Brandon Rutherford added the PAT to make the final margin 56-7. The Greene Devils finished with 532 yds. of offense in the game with the Vikings held to 229 yds. Top-Ranked Greene Devils Overpower South Greene, 56-13 BY JOE BYRD ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

Greeneville opened defense of its Blue Ridge Athletic Conference championship the right way Friday night, rolling to a 56-13 road win over previously unbeaten South Greene. It was the Devils’ first ever visit to Rebel Hill, and a record crowd estimated at about 4,000 saw why Greeneville is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Week 4

Greeneville 56, South Greene 13 The Devils piled up more than 500 yards of offense. B.J. Spradlin rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Willie Carmichael rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, passing for another. Greeneville coach Caine Ballard said it was a good night in the Devils’ first conference game of the season, but he sees room for improvement. “You’ve got to be 1-0 to defend it. We played well offensively, but defensively I’m not real happy,” Ballard said. “Hats off to South Greene. They’ve got a good offensive team. They are certainly capable of scoring some points and they moved the football on us at times.” Greeneville’s offense averaged better

than 12 yards each time the Devils snapped the football. Spradlin broke loose for 47 yards on the first play of the game, and that pretty much set the tone. Spradlin’s first touchdown came less than a minute into the game on a twoplay scoring drive that that covered 48 yards, dancing in from the 1. Ben Ogle hit the first of eight successful extra points, and the flood gates were open. Spradlin scored again three minutes later on a 15-yard run, and Tanner Stewart made it 21-0 on a seven-yard touchdown run as time expired in the first quarter. Carmichael added to the Devils’ lead early in the second on a 27-yard run before the Rebels finally broke through. Jalen Shuffler and Cody Reaves led South Greene on an 80-yard, 11-play scoring drive to make sure the Rebs weren’t shut out. Shuffler scored from the 3, and Jackson Scott’s point after made it a 28-7 game with 5:15 showing before halftime. That was enough time for the Devils to add three more trips to the end zone. Carmichael hit Brennan Hollowell on a 29-yard touchdown pass, Spradlin slipped in from the 1 and Carmichael raced in from the 13 before the end of the quarter to make the score 49-7 at halftime.

South Greene got a fourth quarter touchdown when Preston Shuffler intercepted a Greeneville pass and returned it nearly 50 yards to the end zone. Greeneville’s Matt Smith blocked the Rebels’ extra point attempt. Ballard said at least half of Greeneville’s game plan was executed the way the Devils had drawn it up for Friday night. “Offensively, obviously. Defensively, no,” Ballard said. “We were standing around a little bit. We weren’t really in it defensively. Our defense is better than that. We gave up too many yards. Credit them. They do a good job offensively.” South Greene put together 208 yards of total offense. Reaves led the Rebs with 57 yards rushing. Tra Haney rushed for 46 yards. Jalen Shuffler had 50 yards rushing, 68 yards passing and more than 70 yards on four kickoff returns. South Greene coach Shawn Jones said the Rebels knew it was going to be a tough contest. “We knew it was going to be a big challenge,” he said. “They’ve got a heck of a ball club. Devils Blow Away Elizabethton Cyclones, 55-14 BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR

In the long and storied history of the football series between Greeneville and Elizabethton, there have been many more close games than blowouts. Probably remembering how the Cyclones beat them last year, the Greene Devils turned this year’s tussle into a one-sided affair as the state’s top-ranked Class 4A team routed their visitors from Carter County 55-14.

Week 3

Greeneville 55, Elizabethton 14 You have to go all the way back to the 1925 meeting between the two teams when Greeneville won by a 52-0 margin to find a matchup that was more lop-sided than this one. “This feels much better than last year, doesn’t it?” winning coach Caine Ballard asked his players after the game. After allowing the Cyclones to drive 80 yds. on the first possession of the game, the Greene Devils owned the rest of the contest, hitting two big plays in the first quarter on pass plays to their speedsters, Willie Carmichael and Taylor Shuffler, to grab a lead they would continue to build on.

Kaleigh Forte Cheerleader

“To drive 80 yds. against our defense ... that was a concern,” Ballard said. “They came at us with some unbalanced sets and our linebackers took some bad angles, but we adjusted after that first drive and stopped them.” After Alec Whitehead of the Cyclones barged across for a touchdown to culminate the 80-yd. opening drive, and female kicker Christine Hardin kicked the PAT, Elizabethton held a 7-0 advantage with 8:25 left in the opening quarter. Quarterback McKenly Berry engineered the drive with an assortment of runs to backs Whitehead and Zach Moore and two nifty receptions by Eli Bradley. “Their quarterback is good, and they have athletic receivers,” Ballard said. But it didn’t take Greeneville very

long to answer that Elizabethton score, as on their third play from scrimmage quarterback Tanner Stewart passed wide to the right side to Carmichael. He sidestepped a would-be tackler to gain a step, and that’s all he needed to quickly open distance between him and his pursuers on his way to a 67-yd.

Cyclones Starts on Page 38 the Cyclones got the ball right back when he somehow came out of a pile of tacklers on B.J. Spradlin with the football. But GHS struck quickly on their next possession after a Cyclone punt. This time Stewart passed to the left side to Shuff ler, who caught the ball about the line of scrimmage and dashed past Cyclone defenders and outran them 72 yds. to paydirt. Ogle’s kick made it 14-7 with 3:51 still left in the first. “That’s two huge plays by Willie and Shuff ler,” Ballard said. “We’ve been wanting them to step up and they did. When they get into the open field they are pretty hard to handle.” Elizabethton threatened to get back in it in the second period with a drive that moved from their 20 to the GHS 39, but the drive was thwarted by a holding penalty and the Cyclones punted. The Devils immediately drove 81-yds. in 10 plays to score again. Spradlin did the power running. Carmichael took over for Stewart at quarterback and passed 18-yds. to Chaz Story, then Carmichael peeled off a 21-yd. run. Three good runs by Spradlin took the ball to the 1-yd. line, where Carmichael took it home. The PAT by Ogle was blocked with 2:14 left until intermission. Greeneville’s Austin Perkins came up with a pass interception near midfield and returned it all the way to the EHS 3-yd. line, setting up an easy score just before halftime that might have been the death blow to any hopes the Cyclones had. Spradlin scored on a 3-yd. run. The Devils went for the 2-point conversion and Shuff ler scored on a sweep to boost the halftime score to 28-7. A highlight reel interception by Jamel Hall got

the Devils the ball back in the third quarter and set up another score. Carmichael sprinted 40 yds. to the EHS 6, and two plays later Spradlin powered in for the touchdown. After Ogle’s kick, the Devils were in a 35-7 comfort zone. The Cyclones got into trouble on their next possession when the snap from center on a punt attempt sailed over the punter’s head into the end zone. Whitehead chased the ball down and returned it out to the 11. Three plays later, Stewart scored on an 11-yd. run, but Ogle’s kick failed and the score stood at 41-7. Elizabethton got a third quarter touchdown with a big play when quarterback Berry hit Lucas Birchfield on a 62-yd. pass. Hardin’s PAT closed the gap to 41-14. But on the first play after the kickoff, the Devils answered when Shuff ler scored on a 58-yd. run and the PAT made it 48-14. Reserves got another GHS score in the fourth quarter when Walker Troy scored on a 4-yd. run and the PAT made it the 55-14 final. Greeneville chalked up 440 yds. of total offense with 274 rushing and 166 passing. The backs shared the honors in this one, with Carmichael rushing for 65, Shuff ler for 61, Spradlin for 56 and Troy for 40. Elizabethton had only 110 yds. rushing in the game and 155 yds. passing. “We thought they would throw it,” Ballard said, “and that’s a testament to our defense. We’re not going to give up much on the ground.” Ballard said he was happy with the play of both of his quarterbacks, Carmichael and Stewart. “I’m not a two quarterback guy and I would like to find one and stay with it, but I haven’t found that yet,” he said. “Both are doing a good job.” Greeneville (3-0, 0-0) plays its first conference SUN PHOTO BY PHIL GENTRY game of the year next Friday when they make the school’s first-ever trip to South Greene (4-0, Receiver Taylor Shuffler (21) finds himself alone in the end zone to grab this touchdown catch during the 1-0) to take on the Rebels.

Greene Devils Roll Past Sullivan South Despite Turnovers BY EUAL SHELTON

SPORTS WRITER

After what Head Coach Caine Ballard described as an “ugly” first quarter, Greeneville dominated Sullivan South until the contest was out of reach for a comeback and rolled to a 35-20 victory over the Rebels at Burley Stadium Friday night.

Week 2

Greeneville 35, Sullivan South 20 Greeneville remains unbeaten at 2-0 in the young season and has a week off before taking on the Elizabethton Cyclones at Burley Stadium Friday, September 10th. Ballard, addressing his team on the field immediately after the contest said, “I’m proud of the way our defense kept bailing us out after the turnovers in the opening quarter and we are 2-0 right now due to their effort. “That said, we’ve got to take better care of the football and not have those turnovers.. “Turnovers and a blocked punt gave them great field position but our defense refused to let them take control of the game and we finally regained the momentum and put points on the board. “I can’t say enough about how Terrell Rollins and Jamel Hall disrupted their offense. They couldn’t block Terrell without holding him and Jamel came off the edge to keep pressure on their quarterback, and Austin Perkins our outside linebacker, had an outstanding game as well. The defense was simply outstanding except there at the end.” “Once we stopped the turnover, Tanner Stewart came in and did a great job at quarterback and running the offense and where would we be without B.J.Spradlin running the ball (22 attempts for 165 yards for the game and two touchdowns).” Greeneville’s troubles started with a fumble on the opening kickoff with South recovering at the 26-yd. line. However, six plays later Greeneville’s defense had the Rebels attempting a 26-yard field goal that was wide right and GHS taking possession at their own 20-yard line. Offensively GHS did not appear to be in synch with two penalties and a a couple of busted plays that brought on a punting situation that the Rebels blocked, taking over in great field possession at the Devils’ 26-yd. line. Greeneville made the Rebels fight for every yard, taking nine plays to cover the distance with quarterback Heath Haden fading to pass and then rolling left into the end zone for the score and a 7-0 lead when Adam Fenyves kicked the extra point with PLEASE SEE SOUTH | 41

South Starts on Page 40 4:13 remaining in the opening quarter. Greeneville’s problems continued with the ensuing kickoff with another fumble with South’s Nick Solt making the recovery. Three plays later the Rebels’ Blake Stickley fumbled and Greeneville’s Austin Perkins recovered and the momentum quickly shifted in the Greene Devils’ direction. A change at quartrback had sophomore Tanner Stewart taking the snap and he picked up four yards on his first attempt. B.J. Spradlin quickly made his presence known to the Rebels and a total shift of the momentum when he ripped off 52 yards on the next carry that had GHS in a first and goal at the 8-yd. line. Rewarding the man that got to that point, Spradlin carried the final eight yards and when Ben Ogle kicked the point after GHS was in a 7-7 tie with the Rebels with 1:13 left in the first period. Two plays after the kickoff Willie Carmichael got a little redemption for a fumble earlier when he put a hit on South quarterback Haden causing a fumble, and on the spot was Perkins again with the recovery. GHS took only three plays to cover the 35-yards to the end zone with Spradlin getting 13 on first down, Stewart gaining 15 and then scor-

ing on a 7-yd. keeper on the first play of the second quarter. GHS led 14-7 with 11:56 left in the opening half when Ogle kicked the extra point. Trey Clark’s punt of 58 yards put South in bad field position and with the Rebels in a fourth and nine at their own seven yard line, the punter was unable to get the kick off and fumbled with David Sandoval making the recovery at the 28 yard line. GHS covered the distance in six plays with Spradlin and Stewart alternating rushes with Stewart passing to Brennan Hollowell for the final 12-yards and the score with 1:08 remaining in the half and a 21-7 lead with Ogle’s extra point. The third quarter began like the first half ended for South. Three plays after the kickoff brought up a punting situation, and a high snap with Spradlin making the tackle on the punter gave GHS possession at their own 10-yd. line. Spradlin bulled his way into the end zone on the first carry, raising the score to 28-7 with Ogle’s kick with 9:47 left in the third. Greeneville’s defense kept South’s offense locked down bringing on another punt with the Greene Devils taking over at the 29-yd.line. It took only eight plays to cover the 52 yards with Stewart passing to Kelby Wilson for the score and with Ogle kicking the extra point GHS was in control at 35-7 with 1:12 left in the third.

Greene Devils Spank Jefferson County In Opener, 34-7 BY BILL JONES STAFF WRITER

Week 1

DANDRIDGE — The Greeneville High Greene Devils dominated the Jefferson County High School Patriots at Leroy Shannon Field here Friday night by a 34-7 score in a seasonopening contest for both schools. The Class 2A Greene Devils appeared to have lost little sharpness since last year’s state-championship appearance in taking the Friday night win over the Class 6A Patriots. The Devil offense ground out 349 yards en route to the win, while the GHS defense limited the host Patriots to 219 total yards. GHS defenders Jamel Hall, who had four sacks on the night, and Garrett Rambo made life miserable for Patriot QB Briscoe Bible in obvious passing situations and the Devil defense, as a whole, contained the base Jefferson County spread offense all night. Patriot back Dakota Wright’s running on busted plays and short passes keyed much of the Patriot offensive effort. For the Greene Devils, running back B.J. Spradlin led the way on the ground with 128 yards on 21 carries. Jalen Hopkins led the Patriot air attack with a bushel of catches, but the Patriots managed to dent the scoreboard only once all night.

Greeneville 34, Jefferson County 7 In fact, Jefferson County managed its first, and only, score with 8:12 left in the game The Patriots appeared headed for another score late in the game, but GHS defender Garrett Rambo hit Patriot QB Briscoe Bible’s arm as he attempted to throw deep in GHS territory with about a minute to play. That sent the ball f luttering into the hands of Devil defensive back Austin Perkins, who returned the interception more than 60 yards for a game-sealing TD. GHS kicker Ben Ogle made the final score 34-7 with his PAT kick. The Patriots won the pre-game cointoss but deferred possession until the second half only to see the Greene Devils march 80 yards in 13 to plays on their first possession. Jose Esparza had booted the opening kickoff into the Devils’ end zone for a touchback to open the game. The Devils took over at their 20 with new GHS QB Willie Carmichael at the controls. GHS from North Carolina last winter. After missing his first pass attempt of the night, Carmichael kept to the Devils’ 27 on second down. Devil running back B.J Spradlin carried to the 34 to pick up the first GHS first down of the night. On second down from the Devils’ 38, Spradlin broke a run to the Jefferson County 29. Taylor Shuff ler followed Spradlin’s 33-yard run with a carry up the middle to the Patriot 22. After Carmichael was tagged for a 4-yard loss to the 26, he turned left end to the 18 on fourth down to pick up a key first down. On third down from the Patriot 17, Carmichael hit Brennen Hollowell for the first Devil TD of the night and the season, and 7:01 remained on the first quarter clock after Ben Ogle booted the PAT to stake the Devils to a 7-0 lead. GHS got a major break on the ensuing kickoff when the Patriots’ Jalen Hopkins fumbled after receiving the ball and the Devils’ Walker Troy recovered at the Patriot 24.

We are so proud of you! Granny Kite

Aided by an offsides penalty, the Devils tacked on a second TD with 5:18 to go in the opening quarter after driving 24 yards in five plays. Carmichael scored from 8 yards out on a keep around left end. Ogle again added the extra point, staking the Devils to a 14-0 lead. From there, the Greene Devils never looked back. The Devil lead grew to 17-0 with 11:54 to play in the second quarter on a Ben Ogle 23-yard field goal. He added a second field goal as time expired to end the first half, putting the Devils up 20-0 at intermission. The Greene Devils padded the lead to 26-0 with 3:33 to go in the third quarter on a B.J. Spradlin 22-yard run. Ogle extended the lead to 27-0 with his PAT kick. Jefferson County’s Dakota Wright got his team’s only TD on a 4-yard run with 8:12 to play in the game as the Patriots capitalized on an interception of a pass thrown by backup Devil QB Tanner Stewart deep in Jefferson County territory. Austin Perkins' interception return with seconds remaining accounted for the final 34-7 margin in the game.

Congratulations, Daniel!
