BORN ON THE

WALTER SCOTT ASKS...
FOURTH OF JULY
SCOTT
Tom Cruise may have starred in the Oscar-winning 1989 film Born on the Fourth of July, but he missed it being his actual birthday (July 3, 1962) by a day. Here are some famous folks who indeed were born on our nation’s birthday.
EASTWOOD
The star of the movies Pacific Rim: Uprising and The Fate of the Furious portrays real-life Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha in the military thriller The Outpost (in theaters July 2). Eastwood, 34, the son of legendary actor-director Clint Eastwood, stars in the true story of a small unit of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan defending themselves against an overwhelming force of Taliban fighters in the Battle of Kamdesh. Why was The Outpost a story that you wanted to help tell? I always like paying homage to heroes. This one was really interesting because it is a story about everyday people. They’re not the most elite fighting group. They’re ordinary people doing extraordinary things under extraordinary circumstances. Did you get to meet the real-life Staff Sergeant Romesha? I did speak with him on the phone. He’s a total gentleman, as humble as they come. He had a tremendous amount of responsibility. There always is in these real-life stories that involve life and death and people’s families. Do you ever feel there are higher expectations for you because you are Clint Eastwood’s son? All I know is that I’m super humbled and fortunate to be working in a business that I really enjoy and to tell stories that affect people. The rest of it, I just put my head down and keep moving forward and try not to think about that kind of stuff. Is there something in your life that you want but don’t have? I’m not a material guy, but you know what I could use? More good pairs of socks, because even though I have a socks and boxers company [Made Here], I still lose them in the washer. They’re still being eaten. What injury did he have to work through while shooting The Outpost? Go to Parade.com/eastwood Ì w ` ÕÌ°

pandemic, but fans of host Phil Keoghan will be able to catch him on his new CBS show, Tough as Nails (July 8). The 10-episode competition series will follow real people in physically demanding everyday jobs as they are tested for strength, endurance, agility and mental toughness in grueling real-world workplace challenges. “I’m excited to celebrate those who sweat on factory floors instead of gym floors, and who wear work boots instead of workout shoes,” says Keoghan, 53.

Indication & Important Safety Information for OPDIVO® (nivolumab) + YERVOY® (ipilimumab) What is OPDIVO + YERVOY? OPDIVO® is a prescription medicine used in combination with YERVOY® (ipilimumab) as a first treatment for adults with a type of advanced stage lung cancer (called non-small cell lung cancer) when your lung cancer has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic) and your tumors are positive for PD-L1, but do not have an abnormal EGFR or ALK gene. It is not known if OPDIVO is safe and effective in children younger than 18 years of age. Important Safety Information for OPDIVO + YERVOY OPDIVO is a medicine that may treat certain cancers by working with your immune system. OPDIVO can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can affect the way they work. These problems can sometimes become serious or lifethreatening and can lead to death. These problems may happen anytime during treatment or even after your treatment has ended. Some of these problems may happen more often when OPDIVO is used in combination with YERVOY. YERVOY can cause serious side effects in many parts of your body which can lead to death. These problems may happen anytime during treatment with YERVOY or after you have completed treatment. Serious side effects may include: • Lung problems (pneumonitis). Symptoms of pneumonitis may include: new or worsening cough; chest pain; and shortness of breath. • Intestinal problems (colitis) that can lead to tears or holes in your intestine. Signs and symptoms of colitis may include: diarrhea (loose stools) or more bowel movements than usual; blood in your stools or dark, tarry, sticky stools; and severe stomach area (abdomen) pain or tenderness. • Liver problems (hepatitis). Signs and symptoms of hepatitis may include: yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes; severe nausea or vomiting; pain on the right side of your stomach area (abdomen); drowsiness; dark urine (tea colored); bleeding or bruising more easily than normal; feeling less hungry than usual; and decreased energy. • Hormone gland problems (especially the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands, and pancreas). Signs and symptoms that your hormone glands are not working properly may include: headaches that will not go away or unusual headaches; extreme tiredness; weight gain or weight loss; dizziness or fainting; changes in mood or behavior, such as decreased sex drive, irritability, or forgetfulness; hair loss; feeling cold; constipation; voice gets deeper; and excessive thirst or lots of urine. • Kidney problems, including nephritis and kidney failure. Additional serious side effects observed during a separate study of YERVOY alone include: • Nerve problems that can lead to paralysis. Symptoms of nerve problems may include: unusual weakness of legs, arms, or face; and numbness or tingling in hands or feet.
• Eye problems. Symptoms may include: blurry vision, double vision, or other vision problems; and eye pain or redness. Get medical help immediately if you develop any of these symptoms or they get worse. It may keep these problems from becoming more serious. Your healthcare team will check you for side effects during treatment and may treat you with corticosteroid or hormone replacement medicines. If you have a serious side effect, your healthcare team may also need to delay or completely stop your treatment. OPDIVO and OPDIVO + YERVOY can cause serious side effects, including: • Severe infusion-related reactions. Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you get these symptoms during an infusion: chills or shaking; itching or rash; flushing; difficulty breathing; dizziness; fever; and feeling like passing out. If you are a female who is able to become pregnant, your healthcare provider should do a pregnancy test before you start receiving OPDIVO. Females who are able to become pregnant should use an effective method of birth control during and for at least 5 months after the last dose. Talk to your healthcare provider about birth control methods that you can use during this time. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment. You or your healthcare provider should contact Bristol Myers Squibb at 1-800-721-5072 as soon as you become aware of the pregnancy. • Pregnancy Safety Surveillance Study: Females who become pregnant during treatment with YERVOY are encouraged to enroll in a Pregnancy Safety Surveillance Study. Helping Native Americans in Utah Christina Thuet lived in Tuba City, Ariz., for four years, working as a pediatrician for the Navajo and Hopi tribes, before relocating to Salt Lake City. When COVID-19 began to devastate the Navajo Nation, she posted a request on her Facebook page for masks. Within a few weeks, Navajo and Hopi citizens received more than 5,000 masks. She then partnered with Angel } Ì 7iÃÌ Ì y Þ ÃÕ«« ià > ` personal protective equipment to the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and White Mountain Apache tribal communities. On April 22, overwhelmed by all the support, Thuet founded With Love, From Strangers to inspire the sharing of resources with underserved communities. Spreading good news in Maine In Bath, Maine, eighth grader Addie Hinds created Wicked Good News Bath, where she served as host and editor and featured good news from the Bath community. WINE CART WEDNESDAY! With visitors prohibited and gatherings canceled, the Blake at Oxford, an assisted-care facility in Oxford, Miss., came up with unique ways to brighten residents’ days. “Wednesday is traditionally our wine social afternoon, so we threw together a wine cart. It looked like a French cafe on wheels. We play Dean Martin and pour wine, going door to door,” says Lori Hannah, director of sales.

Caring for the caregivers in California To show appreciation for their hospital staff, the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital created a “relief station” for employees to visit during workday breaks. As their ID badges are disinfected, staff can walk on the outdoor terrace, which has been transformed into a temporary labyrinth to promote meditative meandering, or enjoy a snack in the peaceful ambiance set by the UCLA music-therapy team. “You can see the stress melt away as staff just relax for a few minutes,” says Jane Murcia, UCLA Health spokesperson. “It’s that recognition and surprise that someone is caring for the caregiver.”

The Some Good News Guy
You may know him as Jim Halpert on The Office or as the director of A Quiet Place, but John Krasinski, 40, is also just a good guy. In the early days of the pandemic, he launched Some Good News on YouTube from his home. The feel-good show featured celebs (Brad Pitt announcing the weather!), sponsored virtual proms and weddings and was a welcome relief to what was happening in the world. Now on hiatus, the show, which has 1 million followers on Instagram (watch and follow @somegoodnews) and 2.59 million YouTube subscribers, will return on CBS at a later date. JUNE 28–JULY 5, 2020 | 9

Those Fahrenheit numbers imply a precision that doesn’t exist. In fact, 98.6°F is simply 37 degrees on the Celsius scale, and 100.4°F is 38 degrees Celsius. So, in general, a temperature of 37°C has been called normal, and a temperature of 38°C has been called a fever. In other words, the numbers are nothing more than a Celsius tradition converted to Fahrenheit.

Item #1750
You wrote that the 98.6°F temperature standard is just an average and that normal temperatures have a range. You added that medical professionals consider a temperature over 100.4°F to be a fever. I can see how normal temperature can have an exact average, but why is 100.4°F a fever?
