ITALIAN LIFESTYLE BRAND FURLA CELEBRATES THE OPENING OF A FIFTH AVENUE FLAGSHIP WITH A NEW COLLECTION. BY ERIN RILEY
“WE WERE WAITING FOR THE RIGHT TIME AND PLACE.” —ERALDO POLETTO, CEO
After a year of successful expansion in Europe and Asia, Furla, the Bologna-based brand known for accessibly priced fine leather goods, expands in the US with its first brick-and-mortar shop on Fifth Avenue. “We were waiting for the right time and place to tap further into the US market,” says CEO Eraldo Poletto. “We felt it was important to ground the brand with a flagship in this prime location, which we see as key to breaking into the US market in a way we have never done before.” A capsule collection of bags, small leather goods, and accessories sporting unique New York–inspired details are available exclusively at the flagship store to mark the opening.
Along with this special line, the store carries the Fall/Winter 2015 collection. Both the capsule and seasonal collections focus on four classic bag styles: the iconic Metropolis cross-body bag, the Piper bag in bold color blocks, the bucket-style Viva, and the Diana, a small chain-strap model The store opening coincides with the launch of the Fall/Winter campaign, shot by Mario Testino, as well as the unveiling of a new footwear collection. Shoe designs range from timeless kitten heels to sleek sneakers, each defined by an on-trend pointed toe, and available in Furla’s signature materials, including brushed calfskin, patent leather, and suede. G
BIG APPLE STYLE
Furla’s Fifth Avenue line pays tribute to the city as urban dreamscape with details referencing street-style and iconic New York motifs. Designs, like a camouflageinspired pattern of New York lettering, cartoon apples, and a graphic print of iconic skyscrapers, were chosen to symbolize the energy of the “fast-paced urban woman,” says CEO Eraldo Poletto. Capsule offerings will be the starting point for an expanded limitededition collection in the future.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT:
The store’s design was inspired by Furla’s headquarters in Bologna; the Fall/Winter 2015 campaign shot by Mario Testino; the Viva S drawstring bag and Dolcevita loafers.

Creative director Kelly Framel, founder of the popular fashion and lifestyle site theglamourai .com, shares her must-have items from Furla’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection. 1. Viva S drawstring bag: “The palette of stucco white, maple red, and petrolio green is playful yet still neutral enough to remain versatile.” 2. Bubble key ring pom-pom: “Throw this key chain on a belt loop or bag strap for an easy way to winterize last season’s pieces with a fresh look.” 3. Dolcevita loafers: “A menswear-inspired loafer that’s as comfortable as it is chic.”

SLOW FIRES IS A HOT NEW RELEASE. BY JULIET IZON
Justin Smillie, the chef behind the white-hot Upland (a favorite of President Obama; 345 Park Ave. S., 212-6861006), will have his first cookbook published this month. Focusing on the kitchen techniques that have made him famous, Slow Fires dives deep into deceptively simple skills like braising, roasting, and grilling, while also revealing secrets for creating great sauces and finishes, whether anchovy powder or a Parmesan-pecorino broth. “When I’m standing over a cutting board with a stockpot sputtering behind me, a roast in the oven, and shallots mellowing in vinegar off to the side,” says Smillie, “I’m in my element.” Available November 3 in bookstores and online at penguinrandomhouse.com

Apples turn up in nearly everything this time of year, but acclaimed mixologist Leo Robitschek of The Bar at the NoMad Hotel (1170 Broadway, 212-796-1500) offers a new way to enjoy fall’s favorite fruit—with a kick. Here’s his latest creation, a fragrant Michter’s rye–based cocktail.
is a creamy stew of pearl onions, peas, and carrots, topped with
MOTT & MULBERRY ¼ oz. cinnamon syrup ½ oz. lemon juice ¾ oz. apple cider 1 oz. Foro amaro 1 oz. Michter’s rye Combine all ingredients, shake, and strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with an apple fan.

AFTER THE PARADE
If you’re planning to take in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, you may want to forgo an elaborate turkey-day prep. If so, Daniel Boulud’s Épicerie Boulud, conveniently located near the parade route (1900 Broadway, 212-595-9606), has created a full Thanksgiving feast to go, featuring everything from a whole roasted turkey to scrumptious kabocha squash stuffed with bacon,
candied pecans, and Comté cheese. Those looking to dine out should head to Michael White’s Marea (240 Central Park S., 212-582-5100) a few blocks south, where the prix-fixe menu will include his famous lobster and Burrata appetizer and a traditional turkey with pan gravy. “We have mashed potatoes that might not be grandma’s,” says chef di cucina Lauren DeSteno, “but I promise they’ll be so good that you won’t care.”
