In the MoMent Dianne VaVra, senior VP of Press relations at Dior, reflects on 20 years of frienDshiP with legenDary lensman Bill Cunningham.
I first encountered Mr. Cunningham in 1998 when I started working for Dior. I passed him each morning on 57th and Fifth during my daily commute from Long Island. Each day was different: Sometimes I would get a wave and a “Hi, Child,” other times a wink. On the best days, he would snap my picture.
20 gotham-magazine.com
No matter what, it was always so inspiring to see this sweet, passionate man in action, wearing his iconic blue jacket with bicycle in tow. When my picture would appear in his “On the Street” column in The New York Times, it was such a thrill and an honor. Over the years, he met
my children, Eve and Tom. Eve first approached him when she was five and asked why he didn’t wear a bike helmet. He laughed, and they became pen pals. She would send him pictures of dresses and booties she made from bubble wrap, and he would send her French phrases to practice. One
day he asked Tom what he liked to do most in New York. Tom replied that he liked to look for coins on the street, because people in the city throw away money. Mr. Cunningham smiled that great smile of his and reached into his pocket, pulling out the coins he had found that morning. At the end of
each day, he said, he’d go to church and put the coins in the poor box. Mr. Cunningham left our family with a wonderful collection of photos that captures how we grew and changed over the years. And in a way, he did the same for every New Yorker. He will always be in our hearts.

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
so many iconic men live in New
York, and one of them appears on the cover of this issue: Singersongwriter John Legend, who adds actor and activist to his resume this year. Also in these pages, Banks & Steelz—the collaborative effort between Interpol frontman (and one-time
Gotham staffer!) Paul Banks and Wu-Tang Clan member RZA— share the very New York inspiration behind their debut album. And, of course, our city is the stage where so many theater talents make their names, including Leslie Odom Jr., Alex Sharp, Aaron Tveit, Robert Fairchild, and Michael Arden, all of whom have given Gotham exclusive interviews. It’s easy to tip our hat in this Men’s issue to all the gentlemen who are making our city sing! The issue opens with a personal ode to photographer Bill Cunningham from Christian Dior Beauty’s Dianne Vavra, who penned a moving homage to the lensman and even shared some mementos of their friendship. Cunningham blazed a path in the world of street photography like no other and captured our hearts along with his great imagery of
powerful New Yorkers. From Elad Yifrach’s L’Objet opening on Bleecker Street to Ralph Lauren’s first fragrance boutique on Madison Avenue, there’s an impressive roster of men in the world of fashion and beauty that we sit down with for chats in this, our Men’s issue. And for every moment we think our city is the greatest in the world—and it most certainly is—we all love to escape from time to time. With that in mind, we take a visit to the breathtaking Adirondacks and look at the hottest trends in the Hamptons real estate market for the 2017 season. But, of course, when we return to New York, we enjoy it that much more.

recently wrapped his movie How to Talk to Girls at Parties; and actor-director Michael Arden, who has already been tapped to direct his next Broadway show. I had the pleasure of meeting the late and beloved Bill Cunningham, who we commemorate in this issue, during my days at The Gray Lady. Bill brought us street style before it was even a phrase, chronicling everyday life in the city he loved. Real estate in the city is booming! In this issue, we uncover even more reasons to love the West Village, including some must-see properties. The Shephard at 275 West 10th Street offers an indoor basketball court, a garden filled with trees, and a
library curated by Assouline. Although summer is over, the Hamptons real estate market is always open for business. We are featuring a special Hamptons real estate section that is not to be missed! Now is the time to think about buying that summer home you always wanted on the East End. Enjoy the issue and this wonderful fall season in our amazing city!

GoinGs on about town celebrated music, film, and fitness. This season was flush with exciting events and happenings highlighting New York’s best and brightest. The music industry’s hottest artists gathered at Madison Square Garden for the MTV Video Music Awards, featuring performances by Beyoncé, remarks from Kanye West, and a comeback from Britney Spears. Many events also highlighted the importance of health and wellness: The Southampton Sweat Fitness Festival and Johnny Mac Tennis Project encouraged New Yorkers to head outside and get their hearts pumping—and Chelsea Handler and Nate Ruess stepped up to the challenge with tennis racquets in tow.

MOSCATO D’ASTI, THE HEART OF ITALIAN SWEET WHITE WINE Moscato d’Asti is one of the most renowned and highly regarded Italian sweet wines, produced in the Piedmont region. Characterized by exceptionally high quality and surprisingly simple production methods, Moscato d’Asti is a very natural agricultural product. It retains the intense, musky aroma of the grapes from which it is made, Moscato Bianco. A sip brings to the palate special notes that remind one of wisteria, lime, peach and apricot, along with hints of sage, lemon and orange blossoms. The low alcohol content of Moscato d’Asti (about 5% by volume) makes it ideal for everyone, and particularly appropriate for holiday celebrations, birthdays and weddings.

A fairy tale landscape: the hills blanketed by Moscato Bianco vineyards Moscato Bianco grapes, from which Moscato d’Asti is made, are grown in a unique and fascinating area of northern Italy. The vineyards extend over a surface area of about 9,700 hectares, on rolling hills along the banks of the Tanaro river. These hills were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO with their distinguished shape, either elongated or gently rounded. The hills are dominated by the vineyards, organized in parallel, almost geometric rows, meticulously well-tended resulting in an unmistakable and inimitable landscape. The uniqueness of the taste of Moscato d’Asti is also a result of the production area’s climatic and geological characteristics: the finest grapes come from calcareous soil, in microclimates, typical of the hills situated within the 52 communes, part of the provinces of Asti, Alessandria and Cuneo. In particular, during the first days of September, Moscato Bianco grapes produce precious aromatic substances that announce the onset of harvest time, when the grapes are picked mainly by hand.
An extraordinary wine protected by a prominent institution If Moscato d’Asti is an extraordinary wine, part of the credit goes to the Consortium for the Promotion of Asti, an institution which has protected and promoted both this wine and Asti Spumante all over the world since 1932. The Consortium sponsors research through specific scientific studies and through the application of technological innovations to improve the production process. In addition, it conducts quality controls along the entire production chain and ensures that the Consortium’s seal, which depicts the patron saint of Asti, Saint Secundus, on horseback, is not improperly used.

SCENE EVERYBODY ’S TALKING ABOUT... Forces of nature: “It’s like a tree,” says RZA (RIGHT) of Banks & Steelz, his new group with Interpol frontman Paul Banks. “The branches all fall apart, but the root is the same. I think New York has been our root, creatively.”

How did you find the sound for your new group, Banks & Steelz, and new album, Anything But Words? RZA: When you’re going through this album [Warner Bros. Records], you’ll hear elements from multiple genres, and you’ll realize our album is genrebending. That’s part of our energy, I think. It’s like a unique sandwich. You always put meat and
cheese on a sandwich, right? But if you add sauerkraut, then it [becomes] a Reuben, you know what I mean? What story are you looking to tell with these tracks? Paul Banks: We did something anthemic that could be interpreted as patriotic, that could energize the game. It could be the anthem of the underdog-— for one person up against a
much larger entity. RZA: Each song has its own individual energy. Coming from the same source, you’ll hear the synergy. You’re both from New York—what do you love about it? RZA: You were an Interpol fan and maybe you have a Wu Tang T-shirt under your button-down—that’s New York. I think the energy that brought him and me together was this city.
Final question: Where do you go for last-stop late-night food? Banks: There’s a Joe’s Pizza, you know the one on 14th and Third? You can go at 3 AM and there’s a line all the way to the street-—it’s that good. RZA: My last crazy night in New York—Paul might have been with me—we ate Mamoun’s Falafel. The one on MacDougal. That’s the stuff.

Hungry huddled masses, take note: The city’s hottest chefs are putting away their white linen tablecloths and opening their doors to fast-casual eateries. Eleven Madison Park’s Daniel Humm and Will Guidara recently got into the counterservice game with Made Nice (8 W. 28th St.; makeitnicenyc.com), a few blocks away from their fine-dining flagship. “We wanted to build a restaurant in the NoMad neighborhood that we knew was missing,” says Guidara. “This community has been our home for years now, but we’ve been craving a place that we can visit almost every day for delicious, wholesome food and warm hospitality.” When it comes to expanding his fast-casual empire, David Chang looks beyond geography. Fuku+ (15 W. 56th St.; fukuplus. momofuku.com), a Midtown version of the East Village favorite, may reside in the Chambers Hotel, but it’s still home to the city’s best fried chicken sandwich. Chang is not the only one with a penchant for sequels: Mario Batali and his fellow Italophiles have brought Eataly Downtown (101 Liberty St.; eataly.com)—a second installment of their sprawling marketplace dedicated to all things Italian—to the new Westfield World Trade Center mall. “Eataly has always been not just about bringing great Italian cuisine to people,” says Batali, “but teaching them how to make it and giving them the tools.” We’ll eat to that!

ALEX SHARP
LESLIE ODOM JR.
Age: 27. How you know him: A Tony win—and unanimous raves—for his Broadway debut as an autistic teen in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Grabbing Tony gold: “It’s surreal. I forget that it’s happened quite a lot. Then I realize… I’m like, Jesus Christ.” Best New York pizza: “Roberta’s—shout out to the Bee Sting!” What’s next: His first movie, John Cameron Mitchell’s punk-tastic How to Talk to Girls at Parties with Nicole Kidman, comes out next year. He’s also filming Monumental, in which his character “goes on the run with his crazy, right wing, Vietnam vet grandfather, played by Jeremy Irons. That’s going to be pretty f--king cool.”
Age: 35. How you know him: Tony win for Hamilton, Smash on NBC. Rap vs. jazz: “The funny thing about the hip-hop of Hamilton—channeling my inner Kendrick Lamar—is that that was the new stuff to me, the unfamiliar. The music on my [debut] album is songs that I grew up with.” Best advice: “I was truly preparing to quit the business after a rough patch right before my 30th. A great coach in LA said to me, ‘Sure you can quit, and I’ll help. But I’d love to see you try first.’ I was confused... but then I got his drift. He wanted me off my couch.” What’s next: “Putting finishing touches on my second album out this winter!”

Age: 32. How you know him: He’s got one of those leading-man faces you start seeing everywhere—Next to Normal on Broadway, Grease Live! on Fox, the Les Misérables film. New York fave: “One spot that I end up at almost every day—this is so lame—is Hu Kitchen. I have some food allergy situations. It’s paleo, organic, glutenfree, and really good.” What’s next: Better Off Single, in theaters October 7. “It’s a romantic comedy from a guy’s point of view.” Inspiration: “Hugh Jackman—the way he moves back and forth between stage and screen. In Les Miz,despite having the most to do, he was the nicest person on set. I look to that as an example I want to follow.”
Age: 33. How you know him: Anger Management on FX, Bride Wars, Tony nom for directing Spring Awakening with Deaf West Theatre. Favorite New York restaurant: L’Artusi. Best advice: “If you’re not terrified of the choice you’re making, it’s probably the wrong choice.” Favorite Broadway show: “Currently, Fun Home.” What’s next: Directing Merrily We Roll Along in LA. Memorable moment: “Meeting so many people with disabilities who were inspired by Spring Awakening and watching casting opportunities open up to people with different abilities since our production… it makes all the hard work feel worth it.”
Age: 29. How you know him: Principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, Tony nom for An American in Paris. Favorite New York spot: “Rosa Mexicano at Lincoln Center… Anyone who has had their margaritas understands why.” Best advice: “Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Use their strengths to inspire you to better your weaknesses.” Favorite Broadway show: Hair. What’s next: Taking An American in Paris to London’s West End. Memorable moment: “Getting to dip Leslie Caron on the stage of the Palace Theater after she saw [the show] for the first time.”

“having guests Coming to your restaurant is not enough. What Can you do to WoW them?” — edgar vaudeville 52 gotham-magazine.com
Much like the TV and movie industry, the New York restaurant scene is super-saturated with both content and providers: food trucks, gourmet delivery, high-end fast-casual eats—to say nothing of the steady stream of new openings. When restaurants want to catch the moving train of what’s in vogue and make themselves the place to be, they call Edgar Vaudeville. The mastermind behind the rebranding of New York’s Le Colonial has become a go-to authority on reimagining restaurants by bringing celebrities, artists, and socialites together. “It’s the PR triangle: beautiful venue, entertainment, interesting crowd,” says Vaudeville. “You organize events, bring journalists, bring entertainment, and bring interesting people.” After stints at the see-and-beseen Paris hot spot Hôtel Costes and the award-winning
hotel Le Bristol Paris, Vaudeville is currently boosting the NYC restaurant Chefs Club. Under the guidance of culinary director Didier Elena, this collaborative concept features a menu of dishes from winners of Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs awards. “Here, for interesting people, we bring celebrity chefs,” says Vaudeville, and they in turn bring their chef friends. “It’s a club.” Above all else, Vaudeville preaches the power of presence. “Identities of restaurants are through people, not design,” he says—an idea supported by David Rockwell’s fab industrialchic interiors, which create seamless open spaces between the diners and chefs. “If you’re not there, your regular won’t be. Welcome the people, and don’t hesitate to offer yourself.” Chefs Club, 275 Mulberry St., 212-941-1100; chefsclub.com

DaviD GolDin is Helping to keep new york unique, one small-business loan at a time. By Tim LaTTerner
A new Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s may attract home buyers to a neighborhood, but it’s the local coffee shops, cupcakeries, and hole-in-the-wall pizza places that keep them there. Enter David Goldin, founder and CEO of Capify, a small-business lender with an entrepreneurfriendly strategy. “I saw the need 14 years ago that banks simply weren’t lending to small businesses,” says Goldin. “Back in 2002 I founded a company called AmeriMerchant, a way for businesses to unlock a hidden aspect they never knew they had.” With AmeriMerchant, business owners could approximate the money they would make, and based on those findings, Goldin fronted them the funds. “What business owners like is our merchant cash-advance product, because it works with their cash flow,” says Goldin, who has since consolidated his operations under the name Capify. “Depending on the business, we know there are busy months and there are slower months. As sales slow down, the repayments slow down. As sales go up, the payments go up. It works very well for seasonal businesses.” So rest assured: When the urge hits, you can pick up another homemade blueberry pop tart and flat white at the artisanal roasters around the corner. Thanks to Goldin, they’ll be around for a while. 475 Park Ave. South, 11th Floor, 800-2673790; capify.com

The age of añejo: As master distillers begin aging tequila longer, the rise of extra-añejos is placing Mexico’s national spirit on the top shelf amongst whiskeys and Cognacs—and in rocks glasses as straight-nochaser sippers.
56 gotham-magazine.com
It’s no secret that spirits aficionados have long reached for premium whiskeys and Cognacs, but high-end labels are responding to rising demand for sip-worthy tequilas with tipples of astonishing depth and flavor. From artisanal new-crop distilleries to world-famous brands, master distillers have begun barrel-aging the blue agave–based spirit for years, allowing the wood to layer rich notes of vanilla and caramel atop agave’s natural spice. But what
exactly makes for a sipping tequila? “First and foremost it cannot be fiery,” explains Tad Carducci, bar consultant and author of A Lime and a Shaker: Discovering Mexican-Inspired Cocktails. “But the tequila has to have an intensity of flavor, and it should offer a long, lingering finish.” Consider, for example, Dulce Vida Extra Añejo ($160 for 750 ml), aged for five years in former Napa Valley red wine barrels, which impart juicy, round, fruity notes. Meanwhile,
Herradura Selección Suprema Extra Añejo ($350) offers soft, Cognaclike flavors of stone fruit and hazelnut. And Gran Patrón Piedra ($400), the luxury brand’s first-ever extra-añejo, is a silky, rounded sipper with plenty of caramel and spice. Interest in premium tequilas is on the rise, says Chantal Martineau, tequila expert and author of How the Gringos Stole Tequila: The Modern Age of Mexico’s Most Traditional Spirit. Thanks in part to celeb-backed
brands, “people are associating tequila with sophistication and style.” Furthering that association, she says, is the the evolution of Mexican cuisine from street fare into more sophisticated dining. While these selections are delicious on their own, is it okay to mix a high-end tequila into a cocktail? “Of course!” Martineau affirms. Skip the prickly pear margaritas, she suggests, and “make a stirred, spiritforward cocktail that really lets the tequila shine.”

As concern for the environment and sustainability deepens, Cooper Hewitt is offering two exhibitions, says museum director Caroline Baumann, that “empower visitors to see themselves as designers of ideas, strategies, and solutions that improve our daily lives.” For “By the People: Designing a Better America” (through February 20, 2017), curator Cynthia E. Smith traveled across the country in search of projects that encourage equitable communities. New York is represented by design firm HOK’s brilliant Mural Pavilion for Harlem Hospital; the six-story-high glass façade “comes alive at night,” she says, displaying replicas of rediscovered murals from the 1930s— the first major WPA commissions awarded to African-Americans.
“Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse” (through April 16, 2017) displays the work of three fashion designers who “address textile waste at its source,” says Baumann. Reiko Sudo, of textile design company Nuno, salvages discarded bits of silk cocoons—typically fed to animals—for use in knit and handwoven fabrics. Luisa Cevese, founder of design studio Riedizioni, and Christina Kim, founder of fashion brand Dosa, repurpose fabric remnants into tabletop products and clothing, respectively. In doing so, note curators Susan Brown and Matilda McQuaid, the three designers “elevate the humble scrap to an exquisite statement of sustainable design.” 2 E. 91st St., 212-849-8400; cooperhewitt.org

Art Basel Miami Beach remains a magnet for the world’s top art aficionados, continuing to grow in significance and popularity as the fair moves into its middle teens. “Every show is marked by the high quality of galleries participating,” says Art Basel Director Americas, Noah Horowitz. “However, this year also affords an opportunity to look back at the show’s past 15 years, including Art Basel’s tremendous impact on Miami and growth of international engagement with the art scenes across the Americas.” Beginning with by-invitation-only VIP events on Wednesday, November 30—which bring out majorleague collectors—and opening to the public on Thursday, December 1, ABMB will bring together 270 galleries from 30 countries. The fair also anticipates even more visitors than the 77,000 who attended the five-day fest in 2015, including the usual boldfaced names— with bank accounts to match—such as seasoned art shoppers Leonardo DiCaprio, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. As the fair has grown, so have the distinct sectors, which currently include Galleries, Nova, Positions,
Survey, Edition, Film, Kabinett, and Public, featuring outdoor installations and larger-scale works. In addition to world-famous galleries like Gagosian, Marian Goodman, and Michael Werner, ABMB will welcome 22 first-time exhibitors, including 12 from the Americas, six from Europe, and four from Asia. “We have some very exciting galleries participating in the Miami Beach show for the first time,” says Horowitz, “from Gaga Fine Arts in Mexico and Leo Xu Projects in China to Galerie Greta Meert in Belgium and Galleria d’Arte Maggiore G.A.M in Italy, [as well as] Di Donna and Callicoon Fine Arts in New York and Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles.” Adds Horowitz, “I personally always enjoy getting to know new artists presented in Nova and Positions. Rita Ponce de León and Ishmael Randall Weeks at Ignacio Liprandi [gallery] and Max Hooper Schneider with High Art [gallery] come to mind.” ABMB also offers public film screenings, talks, and tours, but much of the energy comes from the hustle and bustle of visitors wandering in and out of galleries or refueling at one of the strategically placed cafés, where eavesdropping on whopper deals—semi-sotto voce—adds to the excitement. It’s all part of the hype that attracts the world’s gaze toward ABMB, a fair at the forefront of premier high-octane events in the art world, and one held in a city that thrives on celebrity. VIVA ROMA! COUTURE KAISER ARL LAGERFELD MARSHALS THE ITALIAN CAPITAL’S HIGH FASHION TEMPLE INTO ITS TENTH DECADE.

“Fendi is Italian to its core,” says longtime creative director Karl Lagerfeld. “It’s not only Italian, it’s Roman.” The wonderfully prolific Lagerfeld, who has been at the helm of Fendi for longer than many of us have been alive— since 1965—claims it’s easy to differentiate the Italian collection from those of Chanel and his namesake label, the other two fashion houses under his direction. “I don’t have one personality, I have three,” the designer muses. “Fendi is my Italian version, Chanel my French version, and Lagerfeld is my own version. I never made something that looked like Chanel at Fendi and never made something that looked like Fendi at Chanel, because both have a [separate] identity.” There is perhaps no greater tribute to Fendi’s quintessential romanità than the staging of its 90th anniversary fashion show upon Rome’s Trevi fountain in July. Models literally walked on water—an illusion created by a clear platform placed over the newly-restored fountain and pool—revealing a collection inspired by illustrations of legends and fairy tales. “Very romantic, but modern at the same time,” says Lagerfeld of the collection, which comprised whimsical, flowing dresses, many with

Botticelli-esque empire waists; white lace dresses buried in appliquéd flowers; and lavish fabrications such as lush layers of tulle and velvet—pieces that look like they hail from an enchanted forest. Part and parcel of the 90th-anniversary collection, Fendi has released a limitededition Selleria Peekaboo handbag, a one-of-a-kind accessory made entirely by hand in 60 pieces. The bag features punto baseball, or baseball stitching, a larger-form stitching technique handed down through the generations by Roman master saddlers. The Peekaboo bags are exclusively sold at the Palazzo Fendi boutique in Rome. And, if you happen to be in the Italian capital, head to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, where you will find “Fendi Roma: The Artisans of Dreams” (through October 29), an exhibition that celebrates the maison’s nine decades of craftsmanship and creativity. For those who can’t make it to Rome, the short film Fendi: Hands Make Beauty, available online, highlights the brand’s evolution, and the coffee-table book Fendi Roma, a recent release from Assouline, explores Fendi’s connection with the Eternal City. Lagerfeld, now 83, says he’s still brimming with ideas and is given the freedom to create what he wants at Fendi. So expect plenty more from Italian Karl in years to come. It’s not work, he insists. “Work is when a person wakes up every morning and goes to do something they don’t like,” he says. “I have the chance of doing something I love and doing it [in] the best conditions... I’m interested in a lot of things, even more today than before. I like to change while the world is changing. That’s what fashion is all about!” 2598 Madison Ave., 212-897-2244; fendi.com

If Rimowa is synonymous with invincible hard-case luggage, and Moncler with impossibly chic puffer coats, then any collaboration between the two is destined for must-have status. The collection boasts a lightweight gray aluminum exterior (with Rimowa’s signature grooves, of course) in three different sizes, each with a quilted camouflage fabric developed by Moncler specifically for the collection. DOWNTOWN DEBUT LUXURY SHOPPING SOUTH OF 14TH STREET JUST GOT A BIG, BEAUTIFUL ANCHOR IN THE FORM OF SA DOWNTOWN AT BROOKFIELD PLACE. BY LISA FERRANDINO
Streetwise style (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT): Two glimpses of Saks Downtown hint at how it’s changing lower Manhattan’s fashion landscape; a pink embroidered jacket by Opening Ceremony ($525), from the location’s exclusive capsule collection; edgy accessories, like these Givenchy booties ($1,695), cater to the area’s eclectic clientele.

Two hundred brands, 100 exclusive styles, nine exclusive brands, and countless styling options—welcome to Saks Downtown, the newest and chicest place to shop in New York. “There is a much more experimental and individualistic approach to dressing downtown,” says Saks Fifth Avenue Chief Merchant Tracy Margolies, who has tapped über-cool labels
with below-14th Street bona fides, like Rag & Bone and Public School, for a capsule collection exclusive to the downtown location. “We have a tightly curated edit of designer pieces that we’ve pulled together to fit this customer’s aesthetic,” says Margolies of the collaborations, which draw on the likes of Jonathan Simkhai and Opening Ceremony.
“They’re not only unique to Saks Downtown but are all inspired by our city.” Pieces like an embroidered varsity jacket from Opening Ceremony, a Rag & Bone bomber jacket, and Rue de Simkhai tees are just a few of the items to expect from the new location’s 25-piece New York capsule collection. To fully differentiate it from the classicism of Fifth
Avenue, the new Saks also offers designers not found uptown, like street-style favorite Vetements and perennial fashion darlings Balenciaga and Dries Van Noten. Margolies says that these handpicked designers “make it clear that we have a downtown assortment.” Lower Manhattan just got a whole lot cooler. LEG EN D a ry New music! New film! Mogul/multihyphenate john legend has rocked 2016. And now, with his #FreeAmerica movement taking hold during a hotly debated election year, he has a lot more to say... By Jill Sieracki
When singer-songWriter John Legend sits down at his Thanksgiving table this year, he’ll certainly have much to be thankful for. In the 12 years since the 2004 release of his debut album, Get Lifted, he’s won 10 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar, for Original Song for 2014’s Selma. This year alone, he welcomed daughter Luna with his wife, model/TV personality Chrissy Teigen; served as executive producer on the trailblazing new WGN America series Underground, the story of slaves on the Underground Railroad, recently renewed for a second season; and helped ignite a major discussion of our country’s criminal justice system with his #FreeAmerica campaign, which is particularly poignant during this hotly contested election year. Now, he’s adding a new title to his multihyphenate career with La La Land, which marks Legend’s first substantial acting role. “I hadn’t really acted to that extent before. I’d done small things, but this was my most significant role as an actor,” says Legend, 37, of his character in a “trip the light fantastic” modern-day musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The film, from Whiplash writer/ director Damien Chazelle, tells the story of star-crossed lovers

struggling to balance their romance with their Hollywood dreams— Stone as an actress and Gosling as a jazz musician. Legend plays Keith—leader of the on-screen band The Messengers—who recruits Gosling’s Sebastian. “I think it is cool that we did a 2016 version of the classic Hollywood musical. Even though people don’t do it as much now, it is clear that people still love musicals as we’ve witnessed with Hamilton and with the live airings of musicals on network television like Grease and The Wiz. It took someone like Chazelle, with the level of ambition that he has, and the level of skills and love for music that he has, to bring another classic musical with new content to the big screen.” A seasoned performer, Legend worked with an acting coach for the role and learned enough guitar to pretend to play on screen (Gosling is the man on the piano in The Messengers, a band Legend culled together from musicians he has worked with before). Ahead of the film’s December release, Legend has already been named to Variety’s 2016 list of “10 Actors to Watch,” and La La Land is generating early Oscar buzz, particularly for the film’s score. Those missing Legend’s piano playing, however, will have much

legislators. “We as a nation have become overly punitive,” says Legend. “If you compare us to most developed countries, we lock up way, way more people and for longer amounts of time, and when you actually look at the human toll of incarceration and the pain it causes to the individual and to their families, what are we getting out of that? Every dollar we spend on incarcerating people is a dollar we’re not spending on improving their schools, improving healthcare in their community, improving safety in their community in other ways that would prevent crime. All we’re doing is focusing on punishment and destruction rather than focusing on building up the community and bringing about healing. “I’ve seen personally what drugs and depression can do to your family because I had that issue with my mother,” Legend continues. “What we end up doing is locking up a lot of people for their drug issues and their mental health issues, and what we really should be doing is trying to find ways to help them. You don’t want to get in a situation where you’re trying to excuse every bad action someone does, but at least try to
understand the roots of the problem so you can do something to solve it.” Expect it to be an ongoing conversation Legend leads on his Twitter feed, where he says he enjoys having back-and-forth exchanges with people and journalists about the issues he’s most involved with. “I take breaks from it sometimes when it’s a little too much negativity, but I enjoy the engagement,” he says. “It might be a bit idealistic, but I actually feel like I can try to convince people of things on Twitter by a well-reasoned argument. I feel like if I understand a subject, or if I’ve thought about it or read an interesting article about it, I want [people] to know about it, and I want to teach them, and then I want to hear back from them and have a conversation with them.” However, when it comes to his favorite feed to follow, Legend looks no further than his own home. “[Chrissy is] the best as far as I’m concerned because she really makes you feel like you want to be her best friend,” he says. “She’s funny and clever, and she’s also political and understands what’s going on in the world. I think she’s literally the best person to follow on Twitter.”

Just like the Meatpacking District before it, the Lower East Side is continuing to evolve from its gritty New York roots. High-end hotels and restaurants constantly pop up, from SoHo House on Ludlow Street to Hotel Indigo, and now all eyes are on another of the trailblazers, Hotel on Rivington, with its newly opened Café Medi. Corey Lane and Robert Buchelli, the hospitality and nightlife duo behind Café Medi as well as Gansevoort Market, know from neighborhood transformation. But it’s chef Vincent Chirico the diners are coming for. Having spent time at Jean-Georges, Aquavit, and Daniel, he peppers the menu with a ton of experience and an appreciation for the neighborhood. “I am looking forward to the eclectic energy of the LES and delighting diners with a unique twist on Mediterranean cuisine,” notes Chirico. The in-demand toque has assembled an eclectic Mediterranean menu, including roasted king oyster mushrooms with white polenta and soft egg. The restaurant’s tiled, sky-lit dining room, created by the worldrenowned designers at Barcelona’s Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, continues the experience of the menu with a classically coastal vibe. Add in Allen Katz’s beverage program, all muddled fruits, herbal sprigs, and micro-greens, and the scene at lunch and dinner is smashing. 107 Rivington St.; cafemedinyc.com

When Elad Yifrach envisioned L’Objet, he pictured a boutique offering an expertly curated collection of high-end home décor. His latest location, on Bleecker Street, goes above and beyond to provide customers with the highest level of quality and elegance in uniquely crafted pieces made of precious metals and jewels. “The West Village is the best representation

of an old neighborhood with a modern vibe,” says Yifrach, who points out that the area is a perfect fit for the store’s refined casual-living products. “The vision for our first NYC boutique is to keep it fresh with globally sourced and unique functional objects.” He’s also adding home fragrance and apothecary collections into the mix. Yifrach sought out
skilled artisans from around the world to craft distinctive, one-of-a-kind products: “My commitment to our client is to show designs that aren’t exposed all over.” That commitment has resulted in a selection of hand-gilded Fortuny Rabat carafes crafted in Venice, nickel-plated two-tier serving trays with gold bamboo accents, and textured Byzanteum plates
finished in gold and platinum, among other exceptional items. Yifrach is all about originality. “You don’t want to walk into someone’s home and see a piece that you just purchased,” he says. “We hope to help you discover what you really need and what will make the room special.” 370 Bleecker St., 212-659-0316; l-objet.com

Time was when New York’s great society families escaped the heat— and presumably, the crowds—from July through October with a jaunt to the Adirondacks. Against evergreen vistas dappled with pristine lakes, they played at a rural-chic lifestyle of log mansions with the other well-to-doers of the fin de siècle. John Jacob Astor IV loved Upper St. Regis Lake so much he named his new hotel after it. The so-called Great Camps built by yesteryear’s magnates—the Vanderbilts and Guggenheims— have seen a resurgence of interest among today’s. Whether it’s Alibaba’s billionaire founder Jack Ma, who bought up 28,000 acres once held by a Du Pont heiress in 2015, or one-time Goldman Sachs managing director Pierre Lapeyre, who snapped up William Avery Rockefeller’s camp-turned-resort The Point last June, today’s captains of industry are finding their way to New York State’s unsullied upper reaches. Fortunately, Gilded Age charm comes with modern amenities: Lapeyre is undertaking enhancements to his 11-room, 75-acre resort, which has fireplaces galore and fully stocked bars scattered about the property. The 24-hour kitchen satisfies most any request, from tea service with scones and lemonscented clotted cream to a preprandial bite of honey-drizzled truffle French fries. And the most popular room, the Boathouse, will get a long-awaited winterization— making this summer favorite a yearround hot spot. 800-255-3530, Saranac Lake; thepointsaranac.com

After the successful launches of Atelier Swarovski jewelry and accessories, Swarovski has added another beautiful branch to its more than 120-year-old empire with the debut of Atelier Swarovski Home. Says Nadja Swarovski, the company’s head of corporate communications and design services, “We wanted to translate the forward-thinking design DNA and technical expertise within our brand, as well as the energy of the creative talent, into a collection of luxurious and covetable objects.” For the debut, the company collaborated with nine of the world’s leading designers for crystal objects that are remarkable for their artistry and technologically advanced design. Included in the collection is a chessboard combining maps of Manhattan and Milan designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, as well as a series of sculptural candle holders from Kim Thomé. Most noteworthy in the collection is the Crista centerpiece by the late architect Zaha Hadid. It utilizes Swarovski’s groundbreaking Wave Cut technique, which “combines cutting-edge computer technology with mechanical engineering to cut curved forms in crystal,” says Swarovski. “The wave-cutting technique took 10 years to develop, and only two people in the world are able to skillfully use the machine,” she adds. “We were all so heartbroken by Zaha Hadid’s passing, but it seems fitting that she was the first person to use this new technology with one of the final pieces she produced.” atelierswarovski.com

SPACE ’HOOD Village native: The Shephard, by the Naftali Group, tucks spacious residences into a 12-story warehouse built in 1896, and keeps original elements like the brick-and-granite façade and barrel-vaulted ceilings.
déjà village trendsetters are building up the far west village, proving there’s still more to discover in one of the city’s most iconic—and familiar—neighborhoods.
“It was like a home away from home—cozy and warm,” says Claire Chan of the West Village, where she opened her café, The Elk (128 Charles St.; theelknyc. com), in 2014. Chan, a former womenswear buyer for Bergdorf Goodman, swapped models for macchiatos, and now her chic espresso joint, like so many other beloved West Village operations, has the feel of a neighborhood clubhouse (no doubt the menu by Top Chef star Sam Talbot also helps draw in the downtowners). Her adoptive home is one of Manhattan’s best-known neighborhoods, a shorthand for arty sophistication and charming, tree-lined streets. The Elk, though, is located on its farthest western reaches,

tucked close to both the water and the West Side Highway. Until recently, these streets were somewhat windswept and bare. Thanks to energetic entrepreneurs, the far West Village is emerging as its own distinctive scene. Take Kerrilynn Palmer, a pioneer in this micro-’hood who opened her natural beauty boutique, CAP Beauty (238 W. 10th St.; capbeauty.com), a decade ago; she cites the lure of the Hudson River. “The water is what makes the neighborhood so unbelievably beautiful and filled with light,” she explains. Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner is another far west booster. He first ventured here several years ago via his Mitteleuropean fine dining spot, Wallsé (344 W. 11th

St.; wallse.com), and has since expanded his local empire with a new cocktail bar and café, Upholstery Store (713 Washington St.; upholsterystore-ny.com). The ambition to revitalize the last cobwebladen corners of the neighborhood has likewise inspired the Naftali Group, as evidenced in its latest development, The Shephard (275 W. 10th St., 212-995-1010; 275w10.com), on the corner of West 10th and Washington Streets. The concept reimagines a one-time dockside warehouse, a redbrick and granite testament to the neighborhood’s past. Working with the local design studio of John and Christine Gachot, the developers created 38 apartments, including three penthouses. They filled the development with custom amenities: an
indoor half-basketball court, a garden filled with trees, and a library with shelves curated by art publisher Assouline. “You can get lost in those apartments,” laughs Matt van Damm, Naftali Group’s head of marketing and design—“and in our city, space truly is luxury.” A longtime local, van Damm takes a particular interest in this project. “It really is still a village—you know the shopkeepers, cobbler, the local barber. The woman who owned the small grocery store near my home gave me flowers when my son was born.” Locals like Claire Chan echo that story. “There’s such an appeal for families—the proximity to the Hudson River, the great schools,” she says. “There’s a sense of calm when wandering this neighborhood, and in Manhattan ‘calm’ is a rare find.”

Uptown Funk Bloomingdale’s style guy evin Harter gives Gotham his go-to guide for everything harlem. By tim latterner
Style watch! clockwise from above: Bloomingdale’s Kevin Harter (right) relaxes at home with husband Jangir Sultan and their kids; Harter’s favorite neighborhood spots include Central Park, Double Dutch Espresso, Franz James Floral Boutique, and The Cecil.
As vice president of fashion direction at Bloomingdale’s, Kevin Harter is accustomed to tastemaking his way through New York, so we asked him to show us his favorite spots around his home at the historic Graham Court in Harlem. Like most Manhattanites, Harter starts the day with a specially selected cup of joe. “It’s boring, but I just get the Americano at Double Dutch Espresso (2194 Frederick Douglass Blvd.),” says Harter. “I do often bribe my children with one of their great pastries though.” Central Park, he says, is “the family hangout—Harlem Meer, the Conservatory Garden, and the great North Woods! “Sushi Inoue (381 Lenox Ave.) is by far my favorite restaurant. It’s worth the wait to sit at the bar and watch the amazing chefs. I love the food at The Cecil (210 W. 118th St.), but it’s the perfect place to just go to the bar and have a cocktail—I recommend the Blood and Fire. “When my sweet tooth gets the best of me, I stop at Make My Cake (121 St. Nicholas Ave.). It’s right across the street, so I often run [over] to grab a box of cupcakes for dessert. I go heavy on the red velvet with nuts on the frosting. “Since moving to Harlem, I’ve been entertaining at home more. The Winery (257 W. 116th St.) is a boutique wine store, and I usually leave each Saturday with two to three bottles. I always try something new and consistently take home a bottle of Sancerre 2014 Lucien Crochet. “Franz James Floral Boutique (2114 Frederick Douglass Blvd.) is a weekly stop. I have a huge glass vase in the living room, and he creates something on the larger scale every other week for me. It’s almost like a different piece of art each time!”

HAMPTONS TREND LEFT: Bluff House, overlooking Block Island Sound, is one of Robert Young Architects’ favorite projects. Its multiple indoor/outdoor spaces are all connected, so a person lounging by the pool, for example, is still within eye- and earshot of those using the outdoor fireplace. BELOW LEFT: Tall glass walls bring sunsets and sunrises into the heart of this home by James Merrell Architects.
NATURE’S COURSE WEAVING THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF A HOME TOGETHER IS ESSENTIAL—AND SO ARE THE MATERIALS USED TO DO IT. BY EMILY J. WEITZ
People go to the Hamptons for a state of mind, inspired by a connection to nature. That’s why connecting inside and out, not only physically but also psychologically, is of utmost importance to today’s top architects in the Hamptons. “The line between the house and the landscape is dissolving,” says James Merrell of James Merrell Architects (66 Main St., Sag Harbor, 631725-9842; james merrellarchitects.com).

“Window systems are getting glassier, glass sizes are getting larger, frames are getting tinier.” Some designs feature entirely retractable walls; others make the most of outdoor space with courtyards, luxurious outdoor showers, and outdoor kitchens. Alex Hirsch, an architect with Robert Young Architects (2273 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, 212687-6940; ryarch.com), loves trellises. “We’ve become quite fond of creating trellises near
clients’ pools or outdoor dining areas,” says Hirsch. “The way ivy will grow up the lattice detailing is remarkable. It makes you feel like you’re in an oasis on your own property.” Materials also play a key function. Using natural, simple materials is one way to echo nature’s beauty inside. “We try to limit the palette of materials on our projects to the
basics—wood, stone, and glass,” says Blaze Makoid of Blaze Makoid Architecture (7 Tradesman Path, Bridgehampton, 631537-7277; blazemakoidarchitecture.com). “Our selection of materials could literally carry its way from the outside in—for example, using a concrete tile and bringing it from the terrace right into the living room.”
This marvel by JBialsky Premiere Design & Development is breaking all kinds of molds on the luxury real estate scene, and its sleek outdoor spaces—including a gorgeous vanishingedge pool—are perfect for those who like to entertain. Situated on two acres, the 11,665-squarefoot home is listed for $23.5 million. “It’s optionality to own the abutting reserve and neighboring land parcel makes it one of the most enticing opportunities in the Hamptons market,” says Bespoke Real Estate’s Zachary Vichinsky. 903 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill, 631-5009030; bespoke realestate.com

How the light enters a space is as important as how to get people outside. “When you’re in a house and you feel sunlight coming in, that’s nature coming into the house,” says Merrell. “The more easily sunlight comes in, the more it feels connected to the outside.” But Merrell emphasizes that it’s not only about physically getting people out or bringing fresh air and sunlight in. “It can be thought of less literally and more poetically,” he says, “like the folly in the English garden. The purpose was to attract your eye out of the house

without leaving the house.” He considers that connection in every single room he designs. “I think when you have the ability to focus on something in the distance, you’re more relaxed,” he says. “Even in a small room in an old Sag Harbor house, if you have well-planned views to something in the landscape beyond, the house doesn’t feel small.” Makoid feels that the connection between indoors and out is almost primal. “It gives us a sense of being protected,” he says, “but understanding our place in a bigger world.”

HAMPTONS SPOTLIGHT McGrath Builders created this light-filled breakfast/dining room in a guest house on Ocean Road in Bridgehampton. LEFT: Plum Builders’ Modern Barn at 24 Pulaski Street in Southampton.
TO SPEC OR NOT TO SPEC
With a growing number of builders buying up properties and building houses on spec, the debate is heating up: What are the pros and cons of buying a spec house, and is it worth it? Al Giaquinto of Plum Builders (43 Pantigo Road, East Hampton, 631-329-1300; plum builders.com) in East Hampton has been building and selling spec houses since 1982. While he acknowledges that a spec house has its drawbacks, his clients know what they’re getting into. “You see the home in its completed state,” he says. “You know the cost up front. You know all the finishes.” Matt McGrath of McGrath Builders (631-537-7411; mcgrathbuilding.com) was born into the business, but he

and his dad have never done a spec house—it’s always custom. “A spec house is for the person looking for the ease factor,” says McGrath. “They don’t have to go through the year or two of construction or deal with permits.” Martha Gundersen, a licensed broker with Brown Harris Stevens (27 Main St., East Hampton, 631-875-6974; bhshamptons.com/agents/ martha-p-gundersen), adds that spec buyers are getting more than just ease. “You can take advantage of an experienced team of people who study the market and watch their margins,” she says, “so they can provide value in a competitive marketplace.” Giaquinto believes that in designs like his Modern Barn, a term
he’s trademarked, spec houses don’t have to feel cookie cutter. “We update our designs constantly, and no two are alike,” he insists. The main difference is in the conception: Whose vision is it,
anyway? “A lot of our clients want exactly what they want,” explains McGrath. “A custom house is exactly what you’ve always dreamed of. A spec house is more the designer’s dream.”—E.J.W.

Ultra-high-end waterfront luxury in the Hamptons used to mean two things: south of the highway and close to the ocean. But while the Atlantic will never lose its majestic appeal, other local waters have ascended to the peak of desirability as well. Whether that’s due to their quieter energy or their more varied ecosystems, alternative Hamptons waterfronts—calm bays and sequestered ponds— have increased in value. “We’ve definitely seen an acceleration in interest in the last five years,” says Mala Sander, an agent at Corcoran (155 Main St., Sag Harbor;

“If they’re paying $30 million for a piece of property, they want a house that matches that.” JT Thomas of Halstead Property (3 N. Main St., East Hampton, 631-7715327; halstead.com) is currently listing a house on Fort Pond Bay in Montauk that has all the authority of an oceanfront home, sitting on a bluff overlooking a wide expanse of distant blue water. “What sets this home apart is the ever-changing landscape,” he says. “Slight changes in the weather, the moving angle of the sun, or the direction of the waves play a subtle role in your ability to see Gardiners Island, Plum Island, and all the way to Block Island Sound, with Fishers Island and the Connecticut coastline in the distance. A view like that never looks exactly the same.”—E.J.W.

DePersia adds that he made the biggest sale of non-ocean waterfront real estate back in 2011, when he sold 55 acres on Tyndal Point in North Haven for $36 million. The property, which boasted 3,000 feet of waterfront, had three relatively modest houses on it. As new waterfront becomes more appealing, it sometimes means more teardowns. “People want to build houses commensurate with the property,” says DePersia.

Modern-day Hamptons luxury is about living outside the box—at work and at home. Giving East End homeowners an edge is Neil Radnall’s real estate development company, IMaestri Signature, which is not only thinking outside the box, but also breaking the mold by pairing clients with leading architects and designers from around the world. “As a developer, I commission the architects, find the land, and work
with high quality construction companies like Reinhardt O’Brien,” says Radnall of his 360-approach. “When you work with IMaestri, there are no compromises. We develop and build you the perfect house properly, furnish it properly, design it properly, and give you the keys.” Radnall has more than two decades of real estate development experience, and he brings to each project his
relationships with some of the very best design minds across three continents, from Graham Phillips to Mathias Klotz to Steven Holl. “It’s going in a very exciting direction—a wonderful fit for what this market really deserves,” says Matthew Trzebiatowski, of Blank Studio Design + Architecture, speaking about Radnall and IMaestri Signature. “Neil has a fine curatorial eye for [bringing
together like-minded] individuals.” IMaestri Signature works directly with clients from start to finish—from picking out land and selecting the perfect style of architecture to building the final product. “It’s about filling the soul,” says Radnall. “Go into one of these houses and you feel yourself gushing with energy. That’s how our houses should really make us feel.” 631-9051277; imaestri.net

OBJECTS OF DESIRE CAREFULLY CURATED INTERIOR ITEMS THAT COMMAND A SPACE ARE KEY IN THE HOTTEST HAMPTONS HOMES.
Great interior designers have no patience for excess: Everything has its place, and wherever the eye falls, art.
