SCENE FULL FRONTAL Scenes from a season: Official Cubs photographer Stephen Green’s work tells the story of the team’s historic, triumphant 2016 campaign, from heartstopping action shots to candid moments in the dugout.
THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON FROM SPRING TRAINING THROUGH THE WORLD SERIES PARADE, OFFICIAL CHICAGO CUBS PHOTOGRAPHER STEPHEN GREEN CAPTURED THE CURSE-ENDING SEASON OF OUR MEN IN BLUE.
It’s a textbook feel-good narrative: Lifelong baseball fan with creative aspirations wrangles a gig as the Chicago Cubs official team photographer. But it was an unlikely destination for Wilmette native Stephen Green, who, as an MFA student at the School of the Art Institute documenting
16

Wrigley Field for a thesis project in 1982, snagged the position after the team’s then-photographer retired. “Game action just turned out to be something I’m good at,” muses Green. Over the subsequent 35 years, the Oak Park resident has chronicled hundreds of games— including, of course, last
year’s World Series win. “[In] 2015–2016, you really got a taste of who the team was and how it was coming together,” recalls Green, who snapped Kris Bryant’s championship-clinching defensive play from his roost along the first base line at Cleveland’s Progressive Field. Somehow, Green (who
routinely listens to jazz while shooting) remained level-headed in the post-victory scrum of Game 7. “I had to keep separating myself from being in the moment to photographing the moment,” he notes. Though the Canon Mark II loyalist is quick to identify his favorite
subjects past (“Ryne Sandberg—so understated and so good”) and present (“Javier Baez is so athletic, so incredibly dynamic”), he hesitates to single out one image as a favorite. “I don’t know if I have a favorite shot,” he ruminates. “I hope it’s still to come.” sgreenphoto.com; @sgreenphoto

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Growing up, gardening was a chore. On summer afternoons, my father would summon me from my air-conditioned comfort in front of the TV to join him at his sun-drenched plot, where I weeded, watered, and helped pick what seemed a never-ending harvest of corn, potatoes, onions, and watermelons. I considered it such a hassle—the heat, the insects, the heavy sacks of tomatoes and zucchini I had no interest in eating—but even as a moody 15-year-old, I couldn’t help but respect my father’s uncanny ability to work magic with the soil. Now? Gardening is my jam. I tend kale and tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers in a plot of my own (thanks, @peterson garden), and watching it all grow under the Chicago sun has become one of the highlights of my summer. That’s the joy of life in this town: We’re an urban jungle, but also a gigantic garden with green space for days—and
summer sees Chicago at its most verdant, from the expanse of Grant Park to the planters lining Michigan Avenue. Our motto may be “City in a Garden,” but come summer it may as well be “Garden of Eden” for as lush, alive, and downright paradisical as the city feels. In this issue, we celebrate those great green spaces, and everything that makes peak season in Chicago beyond compare: buzzy new food and drink destinations like Marisol at the MCA (page 65); trendy new fashions like streetwear from Joe Freshgoods (page 92); and eight wildly over-the-top ways to fill your days, from helicopter tours to air balloon rides—even glamping on Northerly Island (page 68). Whether you’re a gardener or not, this summer there’s no place else you’ll want to be.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER
Change is inevitable and exciting—no more so than in the publishing world, where new trends, technologies, and strategies are shaping the direction of the industry. Case in point: I couldn’t be more excited to publish the inaugural issue of Michigan Avenue under our new parent company, Modern Luxury Media. Like GreenGale Publishing, Modern Luxury recognizes the need to reach readers and support business partners in an unparalleled way. It’s with great enthusiasm that we can now call other Chicago-based titles our siblings—all while remaining an independent entity, true to our creative, editorial, and strategic vision. This new collaboration with other Modern Luxury titles, formerly competitors, enables Michigan Avenue to publish more frequently with the high level of quality our readers have come to enjoy since I launched the magazine back in 2008. While disruption and evolution is the standard, some traditions remain: On July 15, we’ll hold our sixth annual
summer soirée, Ashore Thing, at Navy Pier’s East End Plaza. This event has grown into a staple experience, which couldn’t have happened without the continued support of presenting sponsor BMO Harris. Watching the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac kickoff with Beam Suntory, MillerCoors, Château d’Esclans, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, and our other partners is “Summertime Chi” at its best. Join the conversation at #ashorething and learn more at michiganavemag.com/ ashorething. Another tradition is our fourth annual Project Windows Contest, whose victors we’ll toast at Le Bar at the Sofitel in July. This is a highlight that’s not to be missed. Keep up with the action and vote for your favorite Gauguin-inspired window at michigan avemag.com/project-windows-2017.

THE MCA’S HOTLY ANTICIPATED RESTAURANT IS SET TO BE THE CHICAGO FOODIE DESTINATION FOR SUMMER. BY AMBER GIBSON
Part of a major redesign for the Museum of Contemporary Art’s 50th anniversary, vibrant new restaurant Marisol is poised to become a destination in its own right. Here’s the scoop. The Name: Marisol Escobar (1930–2016) was a VenezuelanFrench artist known for playful wooden sculptures blending pop and folk art, including portraits of Andy Warhol and John Wayne. Warhol and Escobar were close friends, and she appeared in his films The Kiss and 13 Most Beautiful Women. In 1968, she also gave the MCA its first artwork, Six Women, initiating the museum’s now worldclass collection of contemporary art. The Inspo: “Marisol was an independent, spirited, brilliant woman and artist,” says chef Jason Hammel. “The strength and humanity in her work resonate with [me] as a chef.” Set the Scene: Art, food, and design intertwine to inspire dialogue and community in a warm, inviting space. Immersive works by British artist Chris Ofili include window etchings and a massive mural centerpiece. Dig In: “We’re cooking with depth of flavor, brightness, and color to accent the natural forms of ingredients,” Hammel says. Drink Up: Natural wines complement the lighter palate, while an extensive aperitif list is ideal for before or after museum events. 205 E. Pearson St., 312280-2660; marisolchicago.com

HIGHER GROUND THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS HEAT UP THE UNITED CENTER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS.
With more than 80 million records sold worldwide, six Grammy Awards, and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one might not expect the Red Hot Chili Peppers to suddenly start singing a different tune. But after more than three decades of success, the band has done just that with its latest album, The Getaway, which Chicagoans can hear live when the band takes over the United Center on June 30 and July 1. Released last year, the 13-track studio album was produced by Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, who introduced a new creative process that involved writing together in the studio and playing to a click track, according to an Entertainment Weekly interview with lead singer Anthony Kiedis. The new approach worked like magic, with the album debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart, while the first single, “Dark Necessities,” became the band’s 13th number-one on the Alternative Songs chart. Still, there’s nothing quite like hearing Kiedis & Co. kill it onstage. Along with other new Getaway tracks, like “Sick Love” (featuring Elton John on the keys), there’s no doubt you’ll also hear classics like “Scar Tissue” and “Give It Away” when the Chili Peppers take Chicago. Summer just got a whole lot hotter. 1901 W. Madison St., 312-4554500; unitedcenter.com

2. CRUISE THE THIRD COAST:
Cross sailing the Great Lakes off your bucket list. The all-balcony Pearl Mist hosts just 200 passengers per trip (book Category R, whose state rooms clock in at 425 square feet, not counting the balcony), and hits ports of call like Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, and Georgian Bay during its 11-night sailings. On board, expect upscale cuisine and sophisticated entertainment. The best part? You’ll never need to board a plane, and you’ll only unpack once. $5,180– $10,000 per person; greatlakescruising.com

3. FLOAT ABOVE THE CLOUDS:
A town car will pick two of you up just before dawn to make the 50-mile journey to Hampshire’s Nostalgia Ballooning facility. Join the team as they inflate your personal flotation device, then hop into the basket and soar above the tree line, the patchwork of farmland, and the fluffy clouds. Expect to cover five to seven miles at an altitude of 2,000 feet—from which, on a clear day, you can see Lake Michigan and the spires of Willis Tower. An hour later, celebrate on solid ground with a Champagne toast. Balloon ride plus car service for two, $1,496; nostalgiaballooning.com 4. GLAMPING IN THE CITY:
Chicago Parks Foundation brings back last summer’s popular Camp Northerly— the only opportunity to camp (legally) in style in the city’s beloved parks. Just 200 campers arrive to pre-pitched tents at Northerly Island Park then spend the evening dining family-style, sipping Goose Island beer, swaying to live music around a campfire, and playing glow-in-thedark bocce. In the morning, Dark Matter coffee, Beermosas, and a hot breakfast provide fuel for sunrise yoga and paddleboarding. The cleanup? It’s taken care of. BY LAND AND BY AIR: Meet four of your BFFs for a catered happy hour by the river at the Chicago City Winery, then board a boat for a private hour-long voyage along the south branch of the Chicago River. Once you’re done gazing up at the canyon of historic buildings, look down on the city’s landmarks during a crazy-cool skyline tour courtesy of Chicago Helicopter Experience. $4,000 for up to five passengers; chetours.com

Cruise the Great Lakes like royalty on the Pearl Mist, or (at right and below) enjoy astonishing views of the Chicago River with an extraordinary dinner in the rooftop cupola at LondonHouse.
5. DINNER WITH A VIEW: Have the chefs at chic LondonHouse orchestrate a memorable meal served in The Cupola, the domed roof terrace at the very top of the Loop hotel. Start with cocktails at sundown before settling into an 18-course menu crafted to your own specifications. Engagement ring optional. Dinner for two from $6,000; londonhouse.com 6. A TASTE OF POLO: Learn the basics of the “sport of kings” during the summer season at Arranmore Farm and Polo Club and Oak Brook Polo Club. On game days, up to 12 can arrive before the big event and whack some balls from life-size wooden horses with the guidance of Argentine polo professionals like Horacio Onetto and Tomas Obregon. Then take your sofa seat and watch the match field-side, while a catered, boozy lunch is laid before you. (Might we suggest the traditional Pimm’s Chukker?). $8,000 for up to 12 guests; chicago-polo.com 7. RAVINIA LUXE: Don’t stress

Single tickets $300; ravinia.org 8. GO, SPEEDRACER, GO: Rarely do mere mortals get to ride in a coveted ($100,000) Radical race car. But at the Autobahn Car Club, members grant guests use of their own vehicles, while the club provides a racing pro to sit shotgun as he trains them along the 2.2-mile technical track in Joliet. Don’t worry, the instructor has his own brake and control, so go ahead—open that baby up to 130 mph. “The speed will pin back your ears,” says the Autobahn’s Ron Dabisch. NOBODY ENJOYS SUMMER IN CHICAGO—AKA PEAK BEER-DRINKING SEASON—MORE THAN CORONA MARKETING KING JIM SABIA. BY J.P. ANDERSON

“Summer is go time for us,” says Constellation Brands CMO Jim Sabia. As the marketing guru for brands like Corona and Modelo Especial—the country’s number-one and -two imported beers, respectively—Sabia knows the season is crucial to his success for the year. Now, as Corona celebrates its 20th anniversary at the top, the
56-year-old Northfield resident shares how he makes the most of the city’s peak months. Seize the season: “I’ve never seen a city embrace summer like Chicago. It’s like, ‘We only have 120 days of this, we have to do everything we possibly can.’ It’s fun to watch.” Summer stress release: “I
leave my house every morning at 6 and go to the East Bank Club (500 N. Kingsbury St., 312-5275800; eastbankclub.com). That hour, hour-and-a-half workout is mine. [It lets me] get into my own space and think.” Essential sights: “Walk Michigan Avenue, from the top down to the Chicago River. It’s vibrant,
people are out, and what the city does with flowers and plants is amazing. And you have to see the lake.” Swing time: “I have two boys who are 12 and 14, and on summer weekends I’ll play nine holes at the Glen View Club (100 Golf Road, Golf, 847-729-6500; glenviewclub.com) with each of them individually. WORD UP! THANKS TO THE NEW AMERICAN WRITERS MUSEUM (NOT TO MENTION A SLEW OF SUMMER-PERFECT RELEASES FROM CHICAGO AUTHORS), THE CITY’S LITERARY SCENE IS HAVING A SERIOUS MOMENT.
With interactive exhibits and galleries focusing on authors both local and national—including (above, from left) Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, and Zora Neale Hurston—the new American Writers Museum is an ode to the written word on Michigan Avenue.
74 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
If language is a living thing, ever morphing to meet the ways we communicate, writing is right there giving shape to voices of every sort. The newly opened American Writers Museum (AWM) chronicles and celebrates the individuals whose way with words create a richly layered national expression. Encompassing the canon and the common, from poetry and novels to journalism and comic books, Chicago’s latest cultural institution is no old-school athenaeum. “We’re not putting books under glass,” assures museum president Carey Cranston. “The AWM is very interactive, more like a science museum than a library.” The exhibits—developed by Boston’s Amaze Design—include a map that allows visitors to plug in a ZIP code and learn about writers from their neck of the woods, and Word Waterfall, an art-like installation of imagery and sound spun of passages from famous works. AWM programming will include readings, workshops, and temporary exhibitions, such as an inaugural display featuring the 120-foot long roll of paper on which Jack Kerouac typed his generationdefining novel On the Road. Like a good book, the American Writers Museum is bound to be revisited, again and again. 180 N. Michigan Ave., Second Fl., 312374-8790; americanwriters museum.org

GOOD READS: 5 BEACH-READY NEW RELEASES FROM CHICAGO AUTHORS
The best of summer is simple: sun, sand, burgers, ballgames—and a good read for those days when all you want is a little alone time in a gently swaying hammock. Happily, our hometown scribblers have just the thing. Christina Henry, whose best-selling Alice reimagined the adventures of Lewis Carroll’s little girl, works her magic on J.M. Barrie with her Peter Pan prequel, Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook (Berkley Books, $16). And for Millennials struggling with the whole adulting thing, writer/ comedian Andy Boyle spells it all out in Adulthood for Beginners (TarcherPerigee, $16). The Readymade Thief (Viking, $26), a debut novel from University of Chicago creative writing professor Augustus Rose, pits a 17-year-old against a cult of Marcel Duchamp enthusiasts whose aims are anything but artistic. Marcus Sakey imagines his own odd reality in the Chicago-set Afterlife (Thomas & Mercer, $16), which has already been optioned by Ron Howard and Brian Glazer’s Imagine Entertainment. “My characters wander an abandoned Magnificent Mile, ‘shopping’ by smashing the glass and taking whatever they like,” shares Sakey. “They make a home at the Langham Hotel, dragging furniture to the street to host heavily-armed block parties before crashing in the suites.” And Scott Turow fans will want to grab a copy of his latest, Testimony (Grand Central Publishing, $28), in which he takes readers to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where a US prosecutor investigates the disappearance of a refugee camp during the Bosnian War. All that is to say: Slap on the sunscreen and get reading.

SCENE TREND
OH, HONEY! FROM THE CITY’S FIRST MEADERY TO A LUXE BEAUTY LINE, CHICAGO’S HONEY SCENE IS SUDDENLY BUZZING.
Forget agave—the sweetest new trend in Chicago is honey, and three businesses in particular are helping locals get a taste. Taking a cue from Chicago’s booming beer scene, Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery (9030 S. Hermitage Ave., 773-233-7579; wildblossommeadery .com) specializes in handcrafted mead, aka honey wine. “People [try mead] and are like, ‘Wow, what was I missing?’” says owner Greg Fischer, who compares the flavor to cider and who brews more than 20 variations of the stuff, from cranberry to hot chili pepper. Fischer’s new tasting room in Beverly also includes a whopping 14,000-squarefoot patio, set to open in June. “Chicago has some of the finest nectar sources in the world,” says Sydney Barton, operations manager for Chicago Honey Co-op (2000 W. Carroll Ave., 312-5088142; chicagohoneycoop.com), which gives locals hands-on experience with beekeeping and beehive maintenance. From late July to early October, Chicagoans can sample the co-op’s own honey at destinations like Green City Market and the Logan Square farmers market. In the beauty realm, Sweet Beginnings (a North Lawndale nonprofit that helps former offenders transition back into society) now crafts a honey-infused skincare line, beelove (beelovebuzz.com), with products like triple-butter lip balm and Nourish & Smooth body cream. Why honey? Says executive director and CEO Brenda Palms Barber, “As a natural emulsifier, honey keeps even the roughest skin moisturized—and it never spoils.”

GIRL ON FIRE
All ears on her: Chicago singer/actress Bethany Thomas—pictured here in performance at Humboldt Park hot spot the California Clipper—is proving that she can belt with the best of them.
Bethany Thomas has talent for days—and serious range, with credits ranging from Second City and Chicago Shakespeare to the Marriott Theatre, where she won a Jeff Award for Porgy and Bess. Now, the Kenosha, Wisconsin, native is garnering serious attention as a rock and soul singer, with the recent release of her debut EP, First; an upcoming album with her band, Jon Langford’s Four Lost Souls; and a five-night run of concerts this summer at Steppenwolf Theatre. Thomas’s musical hustle? “It’s out of necessity,” insists the Humboldt Park resident. “I love singing and storytelling, and interpreting songs is my best way [to do that].” That has meant singing anything from Linda Ronstadt to Bowie, anywhere from a bit part on Empire to a church that met at a Days Inn—and now, one of the most respected stages in Chicago. Stardom may be just around the corner, but Thomas still appreciates the joys of simply performing. “Here I am in a hotel conference room singing a James Taylor song for $75 because ‘Oh my god, I need [to sing],’” she says. “And you get waffles, which is wonderful.” “An Evening with Bethany Thomas and Friends” runs June 16–17; “How to Be a Rock Critic,” featuring Bethany Thomas, runs July 6–8. THINK PINK SUMMER’S FAVORITE SIP HAS MATURED INTO A WINE FOR ALL SEASONS. BY JULIET IZON
In the not-so-distant past, rosé wine was little more than a cheap tipple unknown outside the South of France. “You would buy it in what we call un pichet—a pitcher—like sangria,” recalls Paul Chevalier, winemaker and National Fine Wine Director at Shaw-Ross International Importers. “It didn’t even come in a bottle.” Fast forward to 2017, however, and that reputation is all but demolished. Chevalier is partly responsible for the wine’s meteoric rise in the last decade: His championing of St.Tropez’s Château d’Esclans and its roster of outstanding rosés— Rock Angel, Les Clans, Garrus, and the ever-popular Whispering Angel—has helped propel them to the status of household names for

any oenophile. Whispering Angel, Château d’Esclans’s delicately hued best-seller, with its refreshing palette of peach, cherry, and citrus balanced by a subtle mineral edge, actually outsells all other rosés in America by a stunning four to one. And with good reason: Côtes de Provence rosés are made with
zero sugar, making them more drinkable and complex than those Kool-Aid-colored varieties stuck in so many wine drinkers’ imaginations. Their unique flavor also makes them a match for almost any cuisine. “The taste profile starts like a white but finishes like a red,” says Chevalier. “Rosé is probably the most
versatile wine for pairing. It goes with light food, yes, but also Asian, spicy; it really goes across the whole spectrum.” All of these benefits mean that rosé has morphed into a beverage that commands the same respect as Champagne. “Yes, you can have rosé by the pool, but you can have it for a celebration as well,” says Chevalier. Top event planners, like Annie Lee of boutique firm Daughter of Design (daughterofdesign.com), have noticed this shift as well. “It is synonymous with summer socializing, but is perfectly elegant enough for black-tie occasions,” she says. And for younger generations, there may be more cachet to drinking something other than standard bubbly. “Fifty percent of Whispering Angel consumers are millennials,” says Chevalier. “They’re not obsessed with Champagne; they want rosé, and at all different occasions. They have it for Thanksgiving, for the holidays, in the evening… If you have a big bottle, it becomes a party!”

COCO’S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG THE SIMPLY NAMED GABRIELLE IS CHANEL’S FIRST NEW HANDBAG LINE IN SIX YEARS. BY CONNOR CHILDERS

STRUCTURAL BOTTOM.
Freedom, comfort, functionality— these were the three requirements at the top of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s list when she created a handbag that merged practicality with style in 1955. Her idea of dressing the modern woman still rings true, and it’s nowhere more apparent than in the new bag that bears her name. Chanel’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, introduced the Gabrielle bag during the brand’s Spring 2017 runway show. It’s a design marvel, merging the slouch of a hobo-style handbag with a structural bottom, resulting in a contrasting silhouette that feels fresh and excitingly new. In order to achieve this posh juxtaposition, the handbag is fitted on a rigid thermoformed base, and the body of the bag is crafted from light, supple quilted leather. Of course, the fashion house also has perfect taste in its muses, with Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret, and Pharrell Williams all helping to get the word out in an Instagram campaign. Available in a range of styles (quilted backpacks, chic shoulder bags, sturdy totes, and youthful bucket bags) as well as a multitude of colorways, the Gabrielle offers endless style possibilities. We can’t help but think Coco herself would be pleased. 935 N. Michigan Ave., 312-787-5500; chanel.com

IT’S STREETWEAR SEASON IN CHICAGO, AND NOBODY DOES IT LIKE JOE FRESHGOODS. BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI
With T-shirts proclaiming CHICAGO OVER EVERYTHING and CHICAGO LEGENDS NEVER DIE, Joe Freshgoods champions the Windy City like few other designers. Last winter’s “Thank You Obama” capsule collection brought the 30-year-old West Town resident national attention, but Freshgoods has long been a mainstay on the local streetwear scene, building cachet with cult brands Vita and DBM before adding a brick-and-mortar presence in 2013 as coproprietor of streetwear boutique Fat Tiger Workshop (fattigerworkshop.com). “I finally feel like I got my just due,” says the Austin native, who will move the West Town-based shop to a new location this summer. “So now I’m about to hit them with some crazy shit.” Origin Story: Freshgoods began designing T-shirts in high school with the DIY ethos inherent to streetwear. “I started buying transfer paper from Office Depot, and I’d just print an image off the Internet and print it on my T-shirts.” One of a Kind: “I’m from Chicago, I’m black, I’m independent… I’m the only person in the world who could’ve [done] this as I did it,” he says of the “Thank You Obama” collection. New Digs: Freshgoods plans to equip Fat Tiger Workshop’s new store with a “classroom” space for hosting educational workshops. “Everybody has different ways of giving back to the community, and I think our biggest thing is [conversing] and just telling people they can do it [too].” joefreshgoods.com

BRING ON BIKINI SEASON! THANKS TO TWO SLIMMING NEW TREATMENTS FROM CHICAGO DOCTORS, GETTING YOUR ULTIMATE BEACH BOD JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT EASIER.
With two innovative new procedures, Drs. Steven Bloch and Dan Krochmal are changing the way Chicagoans fight cellulite and fat.

Rocking a bathing suit after months of winter layering can be daunting, but two Windy City physicians are aiming to change that. Plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Bloch of Body by Bloch (1160 Park Ave. W., No. 2E, Highland Park, 847432-0840; bodybybloch.com) suggests UltraShape Power, an FDA-approved ultrasound device that targets fat in those hard-to-lose places, for patients who exercise and eat well but are still 10 to 20 pounds overweight. The non-invasive procedure is administered in a series of three treatments spaced two weeks apart, and is especially effective on the stomach. “In one treatment you can treat both the upper and lower abdomen very evenly and effectively,” says Bloch. But what about pesky cellulite you just can’t get rid of? Designed by Dr. Dan Krochmal of MAE Plastic Surgery (1535 Lake Cook Road, Ste. 211, Northbrook, 847-205-1680; mae plasticsurgery.com), Cellulite Rigotomy and Fat Transfer (CRAFT) addresses the crater-like dimples found on the buttocks and upper thigh area caused by a dense band “that has probably been present since birth,” says Krochmal. “But, as you gain weight over time, or gravity starts to kick [in], you start to see the effects.” Dr. Krochmal teases the cellulite band with a small needle until it releases, then injects fat from another part of the body to bring volume to the area with cellulite. “Women tend to like it because they’re getting liposuction in the target areas and smoother buttocks,” says Krochmal. Did someone say pool party?

When it comes to staying fashionable this summer, boutique owner Ikram Goldman is all in for New York-based Ampersand Heart (@ampersandheart), whose folk-inspired ready-to-wear denim (including multiple pieces with striking basketweave accents) is perfectly au courant. “There’s a denim moment happening right
now,” says Goldman, “and their cuts are totally in line with what I love about fashion. It’s really just knock-around [wear]—the kind of thing you want to see yourself running around in—but in a chic way.” Goldman is also impressed by the line’s playful striped tops (“It’s a lot of fashion for something really casual,
with a great sleeve and shoulder shape”), and envisions stylish Chicagoans wearing combinations of the two. “I love the idea of wearing the cage-like sleeve in the denim with the stripe under it poking out—that’s adorable. And I love the stripe with a skinny little pant.” Ultimately, for Goldman
it’s all about avoiding the summer fashion default of T-shirts and shorts. “I’m not [typically] a denim fan, and I don’t love casual wear, but this is a lightweight, fun, fashionable collection that girls should pick up because they will love it. It’s adorable.” $215–$495 at Ikram, 15 E. Huron St., 312-5871000; ikram.com

LU DA CR IS FACTOR Is there anything Ludacris can’t do? The Champaign, Illinois-born
FROM MULTIPLATINUM RAPPER AND FAST AND FURIOUS ACTOR TO HOST OF MTV’S SUMMER SURE THING FEAR FACTOR, ILLINOIS NATIVE CHRIS “LUDACRIS” BRIDGES HAS BECOME A POP CULTURE SUPERSTAR—AND HE’S JUST GETTING STARTED. by J.P. ANDERSON photography by ZACK ARIAS
rapper has sold 15 million albums and won three Grammys; proven his acting chops in five of the megapopular Fast and Furious movies; and made his entrepreneurial mark in restaurants (Atlanta’s Chicken + Beer), tech (the Slang N’ Friendz app), digital (hosting the YouTube show Best.Cover.Ever.), and television, recently emceeing the Billboard Music Awards for the fourth time. As the Oak Park-raised entertainer recently prepped for his gig as the host of MTV’s Fear Factor reboot, the speedrapping 39-year-old spoke exclusively with Michigan Avenue about summer in Chicago, his much-anticipated new music, and his ultimate dream to be the next Ryan Seacrest. Music, movies, TV hosting, a restaurant, an app—you’re becoming a one-man multimedia empire. Where do you get your inspiration? Man, you know what? It’s not just one place. I get inspired by so many different things and people. I’ve always rapped. And even when I started at the radio station [Hot 97.5 in Atlanta], a lot of people didn‘t understand that that was a means to an end. Me going into that radio station was really just a way to get in front of different producers and musical artists so that I could actually get into the music industry, as opposed to, “Oh, I want to work at a radio station.” I was just trying to get my demo songs listened to—and before I knew it, getting a job there turned into me actually having a start. So me trying to be a media mogul started with a means-to-an-end plan of getting a job at a radio station in order to get noticed.
MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 101
These days Ludacris calls the ATL home (and here he kicks back in the Atlanta Braves’ players clubhouse, and, on the opening page, the team’s dugout at new SunTrust Park), but the rapper still maintains a close connection to Chicago. “That’s my upbringing,” he says of the Windy City. “My heart is always going to be there.”
102 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
“A LOT OF ARTISTS ONLY SHOW ONE SIDE OF THEMSELVES—THEY DON’T SHOW BEHIND THE SCENES, LAUGHING OR BEING A FATHER OR DOING THINGS WHERE YOU SEE THE DYNAMICS OF SOMEONE’S PERSONALITY. I’M NOT AFRAID TO DO THAT BECAUSE I DON’T TAKE MYSELF SO SERIOUSLY.” —ludacris
Did you see yourself as more than a rapper even then? I always have; I just always knew that [rapping] was my number one love. But I knew I was much more than that [too], and I’m just glad and honored and humbled to be able to live out all of these different dreams in the entertainment and music worlds, because that’s really what it all comes down to. They say [everybody wants] to be a rock star and a movie star, and I can humbly say that I’ve satisfied and continue to satisfy my curiosity in doing both. You’ve created a personal brand that crosses over and appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. What is it about Ludacris that attracts people? I think the best way to answer that question is that I’m just myself—I show all the different sides of myself. Whereas, not to down any other artist, but a lot of people only show one side of themselves, the side they want fans to see. They don’t show behind the scenes, them laughing or being a father or doing things where you see the dynamics of someone’s personality. I’m not afraid to do that because I don’t take myself so seriously. And I think that comes with different rewards—it shines through. What drew you to the idea of hosting Fear Factor? I was always a fan of the show [during its first run], and when they came to me and said, “We’re going to revisit this in a different way, different camera angles, appealing to a wider audience and younger kids,” I thought it was a great idea and that I could put my spin to it, and that’s exactly what we did. It’s always going to have that DNA of Joe Rogan and everybody else that starred in it, so all praise due to them—but now we have an opportunity to expand it and put a twist on it. Me being the host, I’m going to bring a comedic edge and my personality to it. You recently dropped a new single with Ty Dolla $ign, “Vitamin D.” What else do you have coming our way in terms of music? I have another song dropping sometime this summer, but right now I’m letting all the attention stay with “Vitamin D,” because that song’s just getting started. [This is] me getting back into the bloodstream of music—no plans to drop an album immediately, but I’m always working and I’ll always be prepared to drop some music. I [also just] did a personalized remix of Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like” that’s really dope. Let’s talk Chicago. You spent some of your formative years in the city—how has that influenced the work you’ve done? That’s my upbringing. Chicago’s one of those places where your heart is always going to be there, and I took so many different things from it. It’s a culture of just loving Chicago and Illinois as a whole. Chicago has been the [place that’s been] most supportive of my career outside [of] Atlanta, as far as my entire catalog of music—I always look at statistics of where I was selling the most records, besides Atlanta, my home, and it was always Chicago. So it means a lot, not only to be doing this publication but to be able to talk to Chicagoans and continue to thank them.
Do you still feel a connection to the city? Oh, absolutely—and that’s something nobody can ever take away from me. That’s between me and the city. It’s great energy as always. Any places you like to hit when you’re in town? Taste of Chicago was always something that I absolutely loved—corn on the cob, all the different pizzas, Home Run Inn and Giordano’s—but the crazy thing is that I can’t do it [anymore] unless I’m disguised somehow, so I just have to live vicariously through [my friends] who go. You’re a father of three daughters—how has that influenced your work? It’s given me a whole new motivation—to work not only for my kids to make sure I provide them the greatest future [possible], but going above and beyond and just thinking about the entire generation that’s coming up with them. It makes me want to give back even more through all my philanthropic work. It’s like, “How can I impact the next generation and make the world a better place for my kids and their children?” Which is why you established the Ludacris Foundation. We just [celebrated the 10th anniversary] of the LudaDay Weekend [fundraiser in Atlanta]; it was monumental to make it to 10 years, and I’m very excited for number 11 this year, 100 percent. As an actor, is there a role out there that you would love to take on? I actually just did one—I always like to take on roles that are unexpected of me, and there’s a movie called Ride that’s coming out [in November]. It was an independent film, really to offset all this blockbuster stuff with Fast and Furious and to put myself in a category where people look at me differently. It deals with racial tension; [I play] a guy married to a white woman and we adopt a white kid together, and the white kid is not too fond of me being black. You have your hands in so many different enterprises—who out there do you look at and are inspired by what they’re doing? What’s crazy is that I just thought about this the other day. Believe it or not, Ryan Seacrest is one of those guys where I was just thinking to myself, “What is he trying to prove at this point?” He’s somebody I’m inspired by just for the simple fact that he has so much going on as a producer, and a lot of people don’t even know about it. He’s getting checks from numerous shows and different things, and then him hosting and being a part of [multiple] shows as well—you would think he had a twin brother. I’ve been to his house before, I feel like he’s somebody I am definitely inspired by in terms of just making his impact on this culture, period. Last question: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years, man… you just named it. You started this off by saying I’m a “media mogul.” That’s where I’m at. Not spreading myself thin, but making sure I’m doing my job to make an impact on pop culture and this entertainment industry as a whole with acting, with music, philanthropy, producing, hosting, and just making my mark. I feel like I’m doing that now, but [the goal is] to do it on an even grander scale.

GARDENS OF EDEN WITH LUSH NEW TOME MOVEMENT AND MEANING, RENOWNED CHICAGO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FIRM HOERR SCHAUDT KICKS OFF SUMMER IN VERDANT STYLE.
The Tiffany Celebration Garden in Grant Park picturesquely frames the grand Buckingham Fountain.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDA OYAMA BRYAN
BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI
When Douglas Hoerr arrived in Chicago in 1991 following a two-year apprenticeship in the leafy gardens of England, the landscape architect was underwhelmed. “It was good, thoughtful landscape architecture,” recalls the Indiana native, “but it was more focused on hardscapes and plazas; horticulture was by and large perfunctory.” Since then— first as a solo practitioner and later partnering with the late Peter
Schaudt to form powerhouse firm Hoerr Schaudt in 2008—the 60year-old Lincoln Park resident has beautified environs ranging from the Mag Mile’s famed flower medians to Grant Park’s Tiffany Celebration Garden. As Hoerr celebrates the recent publication of Movement and Meaning (The Monacelli Press, $50), a stunning new retrospective documenting the global imprint of the duo’s renowned green
thumb, he shares his thoughts on some of the firm’s most successful projects in Chicago and beyond. Beautification breakthrough: Commissioned in 1991, Hoerr’s verdant planters outside Crate & Barrel’s Michigan Avenue flagship did much more than just gussy up the Mag Mile; the project “had a huge impact on Chicago, to a degree, [of] rebranding a city that was always known for toughness,” he
observes, adding, “It was holding its own and saying, ‘Look what it does when architecture and landscape work in harmony together.’” Horticulture 101: From the 40,000-square-foot green roof garden of Toronto’s Phillips Square to the McGovern Centennial Gardens in Houston’s Hermann Park, Hoerr Schaudt’s reach is international—but informed by circumstances

specific to the Midwest. “The truest test of good design is how it looks in the winter,” observes Hoerr. “That’s a lesson that has worked for me in different parts of the country, even though there’s not always the four seasons.” Elevated ecology: In 2003, Apple became the first private sector company in Chicago with a green rooftop after tapping Hoerr to design its Michigan Avenue space—but only after the firm convinced the late Steve Jobs of its importance. “[I told him], ‘if a guy like you, Steve, who’s the architect of the 21st century, doesn’t lead by example environmentally and designwise, then what hope do we have?’” Apple later commissioned Hoerr Schaudt for its Lincoln Park outpost in 2010. Gridiron greening: Hoerr singles out Peter Schaudt’s beautifying of Soldier Field as a favorite project by his one-time “friendly competitor,” whose 2003 redesign of the stadium’s perimeter includes a verdant Children’s Park and 17 acres of lakefront greenery. “It showed [the importance of] worrying about the aesthetics—not just the architectural aesthetics, but the context of the greater site—so it’s not just acres of parking lot,” commends Hoerr. The future of landscape: From amenitized rooftops to fleshed-out riverbanks, Hoerr forecasts a growing embrace of previously overlooked spaces and “actually sinking your teeth into areas that at one time weren’t even considered important.”

RENT TO OHHH! WITH THIS SUMMER’S DEBUT OF SLEEK RESIDENTIAL TOWER THE SINCLAIR, FIFIELD COMPANIES STAKES ITS CLAIM AS THE LEADER OF CHICAGO’S LUXURY RENTAL SCENE.
Real estate development duo Randy and Steve Fifield (inset) are blazing a trail with luxury rental projects like (clockwise from here) The Sinclair, set to open this summer; the recently finished Luxe on Chicago; and the much-anticipated 2018 project 727 W. Madison.

Visionaries change their worlds. They think big. They execute. But most significantly, they fill a need before we even know it’s there. Judging from the thousands of contented tenants who live in Randy and Steve Fifield’s luxurious Chicago towers—all architectural show-stoppers packed with exceptional amenities—the duo are visionaries of the highest order. Recent projects seal their spot as the royal couple of luxe rentals: NEXT (347 W. Chestnut St., 312-3613199; nextapts.com) in River North; The Sinclair (1201 N. LaSalle Dr., 312-260-3712; sinclair apts.com) in the Gold Coast; and 727 W. Madison (312-855-

Signature amenities—from gourmet coffee bars and dog runs to outdoor pools and yoga studios—reign supreme at NEXT and The Sinclair, but the latter “is the most over the top yet,” says Steve, pointing to a 35,000-square-foot outdoor deck (the city’s largest) and a fully stocked fitness center. How did the pair hit on their current business model? Steve says it was Randy’s brainchild. “I’d done offices for decades, but Randy was a residential developer and talked me into doing a condo conversion with her in 1999,” he explains. “We never expected it to

become the driver of what we’re doing today,” explains Randy. But what a driver the residential efforts of this powerhouse couple—he an expert in financing and construction, she a design and marketing guru— turned out to be. In 2005, in a prescient move, the couple planned a development of five amenitypacked towers, together named K Station, on an eight-acre plot of land anchored by Kinzie Street in the then-emergent Fulton River District. The project not only saved the Fifields in the 2008 downturn, it changed the face of residential rentals in Chicago and beyond, as the pair refined their business model, upped the amenity ante with each new tower, and expanded to LA and Hawaii. “We became totally data-driven, figured out what

our renters wanted, and brought in the best to deliver,” Steve notes. With amenities that ranged from lightning-fast internet to the best fitness equipment on the market, the Fifields attracted renters with higher median incomes, raising demand for their apartments as well as their national standing as developers. Despite the high occupancy rates the Fifields have achieved with their data-savvy, amenity-laden approach, they remain unassuming about their success. “No one cared about apartments when we started doing them,” says Randy. “The downturn benefited us, but we didn’t foresee it. We were just trying to deliver the best product possible.” Talk about being in the right place at the right time—with exactly the right vision.

TREE HUGGERS STUNNING HANDMADE FURNITURE FROM FAMILYOWNED CHICAGO COMPANY E O HARDWOODS GIVES CHIC NEW LIFE TO MIDWESTERN TREES. BY LAUREN EPSTEIN
“I’ve had a hammer in my hand since I was 4 years old, sitting on my dad’s workbench,” says Matt Thomas, the 28-year-old co-owner of Pilsen-based furniture maker Elko Hardwoods. It was that initial experience and innate love of creating that led Thomas to where he is today—creating some of the most stunning furniture in the Midwest. At Elko Hardwoods, Thomas and his 26-year-old brother Jeremy have essentially coined the phrase “tree-to-table,” using wood that is locally salvaged from diseased, storm-damaged, or hazard trees, then sourced and sawn into boards and air- and kiln-dried for more than two years. Thomas then pairs the slab tops with custom-fabricated metal
or acrylic bases, creating sleek, minimalist pieces that pay homage to the wood’s history with organic live edges and original knots and imperfections, ensuring that no two pieces are the same. Says Thomas, “I try [not] to interfere with nature’s design and instead try to emphasize the beauty that is naturally created.” Case in point: one of the designer’s favorite creations, a cross-cut slab from a nearly 200-year-old ash tree from Elkhart County, Indiana, near the brothers’ native Goshen. “It was killed by the emerald ash borer and I was fortunate to salvage the log,” says Thomas. “I like the idea that this centuries-old tree will live on as a functional work of art.” 2003 S. Halsted St., 847-9892989; elkohardwoods.com

HOSTEL TAKEOVER! WITH A CROP OF HAUTE HOSTELS OPENING THEIR DOORS TO CHICAGO, THE CITY’S HOSPITALITY SCENE GETS AN EDGY RESET. BY STEPHEN OSTROWSKI
Hostels typically call to mind frugal Eurotrips, and with good reason: communal space, limited privacy, and anonymous bunkmates aren’t typical hallmarks of the jet set. But with enterprising hoteliers debuting elevated-buteconomical competitors to already-established players, Chicago’s growing hostel scene is suddenly attracting some of the trendiest travelers in town.

private bathrooms, all with a less-is-more philosophy that included preserving as much of the building’s original design as possible. “All the original brick and the original walls are there,” notes Jared Johnson, the property’s director of sales and marketing. “And it’s just raw—by default, it comes across as very elegant.” To wit: the building’s lofty, street-level coffee shop, H! On the heels of hostel-chic destinations Holiday Jones in Wicker Park and Urban Holiday Lofts in Bucktown, developer Robert Baum has expanded his portfolio with Fieldhouse Jones, an ambitious overhaul of the longshuttered Borden Dairy Depot that honors the city’s tradition of field house as community hub. “Our goal was to take that sort of feel of the essence of Chicago and bring it into modern times,” says Baum, who tapped local firm Bugaj Architects to furbish the 53-room structure with luxe accoutrements like Restoration Hardware bathroom fixtures and a communaluse, stainless steel demo kitchen. True to its athletically inspired namesake, flourishes like vintage dart boards pepper the common areas, and the lobby wows with a meandering chain of 400-plus tennis rackets, an installation by local Chicago artist Christophe Gausparro. 312 W. Plus, at lobby-level mixology destination Broken Shaker, hostel visitors can mix with Chicagoans and the surrounding neighborhood at large. Duck Inn chef Kris Delee elevates bar food with dishes like duck wings served with homemade jalapeño hot sauce.
Neighborhood son and award-winning chef Kevin Hickey has stepped away from the kitchen of his acclaimed Bridgeport tavern The Duck Inn, but new executive chef Kris Delee insists that the beloved destination’s focus on “working-class fine dining” remains firmly in place. Aiming for excellence without the pretense of a typical elevated dining experience, Delee describes his debut menu as “a love letter to all the kitchens I’ve worked in during my career.” That translates to dishes like pork belly and scallop with XO sauce; Lego-shaped foie gras mousse; and duck wings with Japanese barbecue sauce, for which Delee found inspiration in one of those past kitchens. “I was in Cincinnati opening a restaurant with my best friends and mentors—the hot sauce is an homage to a recipe we made there with grits and pork.” Sounds like The Duck Inn’s next chapter is off to a delicious start. 2701 S. ROCKING OUT CHICAGO AND THE DOOBIE BROTHERS PERFORM THE MOST SINGALONG-WORTHY SETS OF THE SUMMER. BY KAREN ROSE
“Those 50 years went by quickly,” laughs Robert Lamm, who cofounded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-bound Chicago in 1967. The “original rock band with horns,” responsible for classics such as “25 or 6 to 4” and “Saturday in the Park,” is fronted by vocalist/ keyboardist Lamm and new vocalist/bassist Jeff Coffey. Joining them on the road this summer—including a stop at Northerly Island—are the Doobie Brothers, of “Listen To The Music” and “What a Fool Believes” fame—not to mention three multiplatinum, seven platinum, and 14 gold albums. With five decades of songs, will you hear your faves? “It would take many hours to play all our hits,” says Lamm. With 21 top-10 singles and 25 platinum albums (including five straight number-ones) to their credit, he’s not kidding. “We can interchange them and still make two hours of popular songs. It’s a blessing.” July 12, FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island; livenation.com

WHERE TO SHOP, WORK OUT, AND GET GORGEOUS IN CHICAGO... Blasts from the past: Jeff Koons (LEFT) gilds Louis Vuitton accessories with art history masterworks, including Fragonard’s Girl with Dog on the Montaigne MM bag ($4,000, BELOW LEFT), Rubens’s The Tiger Hunt on the Palm Springs backpack ($3,200, RIGHT), and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa on the Chain bag ($3,900, BOTTOM RIGHT).
ART-À-PORTER IT’S JEFF ONS’S WORLD, AND WE’RE JUST LIVING IN IT—AND DRESSING FOR IT—AS HE ANNOUNCES A NEW COLLECTION FOR LOUIS VUITTON.
Jeff Koons, the Pop Artinfluenced provocateur behind balloon-dog sculptures and Old Master reproductions, has always been better received by the general public than by the art world. But now the latter is catching up, following a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum, a prominent new public installation in New York, and, most recently, a gala in his honor at MOCA in LA. But as the conversation shifts around him, Koons remains happily himself at the center, announcing a major commercial collaboration in the form of a new fashion collection for none other than Louis Vuitton. Dubbed “Masters,” Koons’s pieces for the Parisian powerhouse deploy a premise similar to his “Gazing Ball” series, in which he hand-painted reproductions of some of art history’s greatest works and placed a gleaming blue orb at their center. This time, Koons has taken five of the most recognizable paintings in the

history of art—Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Titian’s Mars, Venus and Cupid, Rubens’s The Tiger Hunt, Fragonard’s Girl with Dog, and Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield with Cypresses—and placed them on purses, totes, scarves, bag charms, and shawls. This is the first time an original Koons has been featured in a fashion collaboration. “What’s wonderful about working with Louis Vuitton is their resources. They [have] the finest in the world,” says the 62-year-old artist. “The first samples come through and it’s like, ‘Wow! That’s better than anything I’ve seen before.’” Each accessory is adorned with the original artist’s last name in glitzy, appliquéd letters, providing a quick lesson in art history—and pre-Instagram personal branding. For his part, Koons signs the works, too: His initials appear as part of the classic Louis Vuitton monogram. Naturally. 919 N. Michigan Ave., 312-9442010; louisvuitton.com

Nothing beats Gene and Jude’s (2720 River Road, River Grove, 708-452-7634; geneandjudes.com) hot dogs at 2 am after a night out—not to mention the hand-cut fries that come with.” HIDDEN GEM: “Imperial Shoe Crafters (70 E. They represent the type of people this city is made of: hard working, personable, reliable, and easy to talk to.” FAVE CITY SPACE: “The intersection of Michigan and Wacker. Of course, outside of it being the location of LondonHouse, it’s the most iconic intersection in the city—it’s where Chicago was established [at Fort Dearborn].” SUMMER LOVE: “The rooftops. We’re lucky to have the best rooftop experiences in this city; any new building wants to ensure they have one, and any existing building wishes they had one.” ULTIMATE INDULGENCE: “For me it has to be food-related, and I love Portillo’s (100 W. T
he Race to Mackinac is about the journey as much as the destination. More than 325 boats carrying 3,000 sailors annually depart on a 333 mile adventure to Mackinac Island, Michigan.
The first night falls and crews develop tactics for staying alert whether it’s through song, weather forecasting or storytelling. They huddle together on the rails for warmth in the darkness with only the stars and periodic beams of flashlights to light their way. Dawn is when sailors remember just how large Lake Michigan is – they’re surrounded by the competition or all alone. There’s the inevitable mixture of pain and relaxation onboard, but spirits remain high. A dozen sets of weary eyes perk up and collectively bodies that had been sleeping below deck rise up. The Mackinac Bridge is on the horizon; the finish line is within reach. Wish the sailors luck and wave farewell as the boats parade past Navy Pier before the start of the race on Saturday, July 15.
