Peter Morton’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Far from your average LV grand opening, the weekend’s festivities featured a star-studded guest roster at the hotel’s Joint theater to view a
lineup of live performances by A-list acts bridging the gen gap from the Eagles to Sheryl Crow, who after-partied in style at the latest place to see and be seen in Vegas, the circular Center Bar.
Morton’s risky theme proved prescient: Now celebrating its 20th year, the Hard Rock is still going strong—quite a feat given the hotel’s off-Strip location and radical de-emphasis on gaming.
With a cool $3-million upgrade of the iconic Center Bar unveiled this past September, the property plans to keep the party rolling for another two decades… and then some. Rock on.

Las Vegas is the kind of place that reveals itself in layers. People who stick around long enough are rewarded with a rare perspective of one of the world’s most familiar cities. Take 36-year-old photographer Josh Pacheco, who moved to Vegas from San
Diego in 1998 and now catalogs his impressions of life as a local on his über-popular Instagram account, @joshpacheco__. Glance at Pacheco’s snapshots and you might assume you’re looking at the Vegas of the future—an illuminated fantasyland
tinged with shades of Blade Runner or Gotham City, plus a touch of the Martian landscape thrown in for good measure, courtesy of nearby Valley of Fire State Park (one of Pacheco’s favorite locations to shoot, along with Vegas’s historic Downtown). “What truly
sets Vegas apart from other cities is that you can capture clean lines and modern architecture,” Pacheco remarks, “or drive just 25 minutes away to capture a beautiful desert landscape.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
I celebrated the launch of Kevyn Wynn’s gorgeous indoor slipper line with her and lots of friends at the Wynn Collection; Jennifer Lopez and I have little in common, in that she can dance and sing for two hours and I get winded walking up the stairs. But we’re both brand ambassadors for Brazilian shoe and accessories brand Carmen Steffens, whose shoes we both love to wear. That, unfortunately, is where our similarities end.
I recently attended our Winter Issue cover girl Jennifer Lopez’s show, All I Have, at the Axis Theatre in Planet Hollywood. Just as I’d hoped, I lost track of all the costume changes. Transforming from bedazzled, Yankee cap-wearing Jenny from the Block to a red caftan draped incarnation of Celia Cruz to ball gown-meets-projection screen-clad ingénue, she reminded me of the Las Vegas Strip itself. Disrobing, rebuilding and reinventing, all against a backdrop of pyrotechnics and razzle-dazzle, we’re a
city in constant, fabulous flux. For those millions who visit once a year, it’s like visiting a new city every time. The most substantial changes appeal to people who might actually like to socialize outside on the Strip… and even be reminded of where Las Vegas actually is (not Italy, not Paris, not Egypt)! Even for those of us who live here full-time, it’s hard to get jaded. When it opens this month, The Park between Monte Carlo and New York-New York will take its cues from the Mojave Desert, with meta-quartzite stone sourced from a local
quarry, a water wall inspired by our natural springs, and 200 fullgrown desert trees, and flanked by restaurant and bar outdoor seating. And at Vegas magazine, we’re taking a page from Vegas the city: In order to keep up with the fast pace of the city’s costume swaps, we’ve added stories to bring you more culture, fashion, entertainment, and dining, as well as expanded real estate— and more on the way.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
With Joshua Wolf Shenk, executive director of the Black Mountain Institute; with Brookings Institution senior fellow Pat Mulroy and Michael Saltman, president of the VISTA Group; with UNLV School of Medicine Dean Barbara Atkinson at the university’s scholarship donor appreciation event.
Spring: a time of new beginnings, and looking forward. Las Vegas has welcomed 2016 in a way that is singularly Las Vegas, and we could not be more excited about both what we have offered the year thus far and what lies ahead. Vegas magazine recently sponsored the UNLV School of Law and the Brookings Institution’s “Turbulent Waters: Brokering a Secure World: A Conference on Water Law and Policy.” The event gathered many of the top minds in the US to discuss water planning, water markets, and economic development. Las Vegas, a desert region that has secured its own water resources for the coming decades, is fast becoming known for water management expertise. And our next area of expertise could be right around the corner. There’s a new dean in town and her name is Barbara Atkinson.
UNLV is launching a medical school, the first public allopathic school for Southern Nevada, and Dean Atkinson has raised local philanthropic support to offer full four-year scholarships for the first class of 60 students in 2018. America’s doctors of tomorrow, will start right here in Las Vegas. In the end, we know it is our people who create and innovate the Las Vegas you experience every day. Like myself, the majority of us arrived from somewhere else and today call this expansive, open city our home. As you tour our locales, take a moment to talk to your servers and supporters—their stories are interesting and no two are alike except in their optimism for this town and its promise. Whether you venture here for a weekend retreat or to live, hope springs eternal. It’s contagious. It’s Las Vegas.

A coterie of A-listers pAys tribute to frAnk sinAtrA on whAt would hAve been his 100th birthdAy. “I would like to be remembered as a man who brought an innovation to popular singing,” Frank Sinatra remarked to Walter Cronkite in 1965. If the evening of Dec. 2, 2015, was any indication, the legendary crooner more than accomplished his goal of leaving a legacy that altered the course of popular music. That night, a band of stars including Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Nick Jonas, Alicia Keys, and Trisha Yearwood, among others, came to Wynn Las Vegas to pay their respects to Ol’ Blue Eyes and his timeless songbook just 10 days before what would have been the singer’s 100th birthday. Another Vegas icon, Celine Dion, dazzled with a rendition of Sinatra’s 1957 hit “All the Way,” while shared medleys featuring artists ranging from Zac Brown, Seth MacFarlane, and Carrie Underwood (“Come Fly CONTINUED...

A reborn ElliE GouldinG Lights up the night At the MAndALAy bAy.
When British singer Ellie Goulding, 29, takes the stage for a one-night appearance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center this April, audiences will be introduced to a very different performer than the Ellie Goulding who broke out onto the scene with her EDM-tinged hit single “Lights.” Five years later and fresh off the release of her latest album, Delirium, Goulding’s musical evolution has her embracing mainstream pop like never before, particularly in tracks like the album’s undeniably catchy lead single, “On My Mind.” The song’s music video, which sees Goulding and a friend overtake the city on horseback in a Westerninspired Thelma & Louise scenario, was filmed at various locations around the city, including Fremont Street and the retro-cool El Cortez Hotel & Casino—as if we needed any more proof that when it comes to reinvention, there’s no better place to dabble in a new identity than Vegas. Las Vegas has all the high-concept drinking you can imagine, but at some point, between flying superheroes delivering bottles to your table and naughty fairytale-themed day parties, you might just want to sit down and have a drink that doesn’t get sprayed on you. CliQue Bar & Lounge in Cosmopolitan, from former Light Group owner Andy Masi’s new Clique Hospitality group, is just such a place. “We didn’t want a club, or a space where you have to pay a cover. There’s no cranking music, and it’s not a boxed-in, four-wall
place,” Masi explains. What it is: an intimate, Studio Munge–designed room curtained from the casino and outfitted in warm golds and leathers, with a beautifully lit bar as its star. “We hired the most creative mixologists out there to have fun with incredible ingredients,” he says. A small kitchen by partner chef Brian Massie (of Hearthstone fame) turns out accessible bites, and tableside mixologists (not flown in on cables) ensure your drink is up to your exacting specifications. 702-6987000; cosmopolitan lasvegas.com

Now in its third season, Restaurant Startup has Las Vegas’s very own Elizabeth Blau starring alongside Joe Bastianich and Tim Love. Part Shark Tank, part Top Chef, the show pits two teams against each other to pitch their restaurant concepts to investors. The winning team gets 36 hours and $7,500 to put its idea to the test.
The role is a perfect fit for Blau, known, along with her chef husband, Kim Canteenwalla, for her Vegas hot spots like Andiron Steak & Sea and Honey Salt. Were you a fan of the show before becoming involved? Our son Cole and I love all the CNBC programming. We also watch Shark Tank and
Undercover Boss. Which investor did you enjoy going head-to-head against? Joe is more the restaurateur and is incredibly financially savvy so negotiating with him is definitely more daunting. Tim is not only a chef but an incredibly smart businessman. He makes the negotiations fun.

Are you very handson with your restaurants? I am, but I leave the day-today operations to my husband and our business partner, Jason Lapin. I am more of a mentor and coach. Having over a decade’s experience in the consulting business makes me very adept at the delicate balance between guiding someone else’s vision and creating it. What factors are most important for you in choosing who to invest in? The restaurant industry is fraught with examples of failures. I think it is critical to consider all the components—the people, the food, the vision, and the scalability. I would start with the vision. Without a clear vision you are doomed. Did you always dream of going on a show like Restaurant Startup? The first food show I really became obsessed with was the original Japanese version of Iron Chef. I think shows like ours give aspiring restaurateurs a chance of a lifetime not only to get a financial investment but also the expertise of a partner with invaluable experience. I don’t think the 36 hours and $7,500 are an unfair constraint. I always wanted to go on Apprentice because I thought I could definitely win that one!

Chow NOW
Michael Chow is the mister of all he surveys.
50 vegasmagazine.com
When the Vegas rumormill began buzzing with the idea that Michael Chow’s Beijing cuisine restaurant, Mr. Chow— which has operated its celebrity-packed hot spots since his first London eatery in 1968—would open a location in Las Vegas, the
reaction from the city’s gourmands was equal parts delight and, “Finally!” After all, Vegas is full of iconic restaurants. Not having a Mr. Chow—which some would say is the ultimate status restaurant—somehow seemed like an oversight.
This has been corrected in high style, all curated and designed by Chow himself, from the Champagne lounge on the casino floor of Caesars Palace to the restaurant, up a set of private elevators into the glistening round Plexi-lined dining room, overlooking
the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis (take that, New York City!). Then, as the Mr. Chow-initiated know, the theater begins: with another pass of the bubble trolley, wine decanting, sole filleting, Beijing duck carved tableside to great effect, and a mesmerizing

noodle-pulling show. All the classics are here, from the otherworldly green prawns (immortalized in a portrait by famous Chow diner Keith Haring) and Ma Mignon (a crispy crusted filet mignon) to the famous dessert selection— Grand Marnier-marinated oranges, coconut cake, an endless display of colorful delights—wheeled out on a custom-made Christofle trolley cart. The Vegas centerpiece is a one-of-a-kind kinetic sculpture, The Moon, designed by Chow and made of snowy white fiberglass (inside it’s Yves Klein Blue) and suspended from the soaring dome overhead. Every new restaurant has its unique Mr. Chow style, Chow explains, “but in this particular case, we have a 60-foot-diameter dome, that has given us this incredible opportunity to do something great,” he enthuses. “The sculpture, 26 feet in diameter, dances throughout the evening, every 20 minutes.” Mr. Chow’s Las Vegas restaurant beautifully accomplishes what it has always done in cities like Miami and New York: Among all the teams of captains and servers in their balletic presentations of dish after colorful dish, the endless gleaming accessories and design elements, and now even a kinetic sculpture to watch, it’s the diners who feel just a bit more attractive. And isn’t that the point of going out in this town? Caesars Palace; 702-731-7888; caesars.com

When the touring production of Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast rolls onto the Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall stage in April, audiences will experience a dazzler of a show that impresses visually as much as it does musically. Much of the eye candy comes courtesy of the show’s original costume designer, Ann Hould-Ward, who
took home a Tony Award in 1994 for crafting the production’s ensembles—a beast of a process that spanned more than a year from the initial stage of researching clothing from the 1700s, when fairytales were first written down, to opening night. More than 20 years after the show’s Broadway premiere, the costumes have been
slightly streamlined to survive the harshness of touring but continue to inspire awe in even their own creator. “I must admit,” Hould-Ward remarks, “I wait to see the reveal of Belle’s yellow dress each time I see the show.” April 8–17. CHANNEL YOUR INNER NOIR SIREN AT DOWNTOWN’S NEWEST OBSESSION, F. PIGALLE, ONE OF THE SEXIEST ROOMS IN VEGAS.
To hear chef Sam Marvin tell it, the idea for his newest culinary concept, F. Pigalle, originated during his years as an American living in Paris. “I’d take everyone who came to visit me, whether it was my mom or my girlfriend, to this little fondue place, and they all just had the time of their lives there,” Marvin recalls. “These people saw the Mona Lisa and the Eiffel Tower, but all they’d remember was this fondue place.” It was his memories of carefree French living that inspired Marvin, also the mastermind behind the hit Summerlin steakhouse Echo & Rig, to debut a sultry, mural-covered space in the heart of Downtown, paired with a delightfully simplistic five-item menu that celebrates the often-overlooked sensuality of fondue—a treat that, much like the restaurant’s feel-good, sexy vibe, is meant to be shared. “It’s really about having fun,” Marvin adds. “Like one big party.” 508 Fremont St., 702-550-4797; fpigalle.com

More than 60 images that became symbols of their age will line the walls of the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art starting March 18. Yousef Karsh, the Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer, documented some of the most meaningful and telling portraits of the world’s power brokers, Hollywood heavy hitters, great thinkers, and artists. Tarissa Tiberti, executive director of the gallery, has curated a streamlined “best of” show using works on loan from the Boston Museum of Fine Art’s permanent collection, to which Karsh and his wife, Estrellita, gave 199 photographs before 1998, and to which she continued to gift after his death in 2002. “There’s Georgia O’Keeffe in her studio, almost like a Georgia O’Keeffe painting,” Tiberti says. “Clark Gable as Rhett Butler— the man we all wanted to date. he’s thinking.” They all form a show that she “picked for its relevance to the time—and of course to BGFA, Bellagio, and Las Vegas.” Each image has a backstory, provided by audio guide tours and information panels. One of Tiberti’s favorite stories: the career-defining moment that came for a young Karsh in 1941, when he was hired to photograph Winston Churchill. His portrait of the statesman, scowling
into the camera, would become a symbolic representation of England’s wartime. But that iconic frown is less complex than Churchill contemplating the state of the nation. “Karsh had pulled a cigar out of Churchill’s hand, and he has this stunned expression,” Tiberti laughs. “Karsh could, like no one else, capture the essence of a person— even the most private.” bellagio.com

SCENE DRINK UP!
Forget cocktails: this season, the buzziest beverage in vegas is tea.
In Vegas, where no food or drink trend is off the table, tea services aren’t exactly novelties. Finding a service that adheres to history and authenticity, however, isn’t always an easy task—but that’s where chef Mark Purdy and Alizé, the Michelinstarred restaurant atop Palms Casino Resort, come in. “Like anything else,” Purdy says, “when you start to look into tea, you want to find the best kind you possibly can.” Thus, after months spent researching various vendors and blends, the chef has expanded his menu with a collection of five herbal teas sourced from China by the specialty purveyor Seven Cups, as well as one premium aged tea, green puer, imported directly from the ancient plantation lands of the Jingmai mountain range. Try the new additions in a tableside service, and don’t miss the chef’s duck breast, which features a coating of—what else?— smoked tea. Palms Casino Resort, 702-951-7000; palms.com

“Once I was aware of the help available at Cancer Treatment Centers of America®, I was ready to face the journey ahead of me. All of my fears and worries about traveling somewhere unfamiliar for treatment were dispelled, because what I found instead was a place where everything was organized for me. In Arizona all of my doctors were in one place. Everything was where I needed it to be. There were people taking care of me who knew something about me, and who would be there to walk me through every step of the way, until I could walk by myself.“ Rosie Painter Denver

CIAO, POP! PRADA’S POWERFUL NEW SPRING/SUMMER COLLECTION RETURNS TO ITS SUBVERSIVE ROOTS.
Unlike many designers today, Miuccia Prada, 66, works purely from her own aesthetic, alighting on whichever motifs grab her attention and waiting for the industry to catch up. In her Spring/Summer 2016 collection—one she has declared “post-modest, post-industrialist, and post-Pop”—she reprises rabbits and rockets on charming silk blouses. “I was trying to analyze the concept between honesty, humanity, and simplicity, compared with the necessity of being bold, aggressive, and loud,” she explained backstage at its runway debut. The women’s ready-towear designs are a return to her roots, reviving Prada tropes: intarsia V-neck wool tanks and starched organza skirts with matching jackets. Also in organza are graphic frocks in 1920s flapper styles, striped leather blazers, and boxy suede car coats. And the handbags! Structured, top-handled lady’s purses; steroidal

hardware and chains thick enough for tugboats; and the continuing evolution of the Inside bag. That “Mrs. Prada,” as industry insiders call her, commands universal respect in fashion is somewhat ironic, given that it was a world she was reluctant to join. Consider: She is likely the only fashion grandee with a doctorate in political science. Probably the only former Communist Party member with five years of mime training, too. It was not her ambition to take over Fratelli Prada, the luggage company her grandfather founded in 1913. Yet, in 1978, she taught herself design, and, seven years later, launched a range of instantly iconic black nylon handbags. Now, Prada boasts more than 600 boutiques in 70 countries, and turns over some $4.65 billion every year. Still, integration wasn’t easy. From her first full collection, in 1989, Mrs. Prada refused to do things the “correct” way. “By definition, good taste is horrible taste,” she says. “I have a healthy disrespect for [conventional] values.” Prada helped subvert Milan fashion—which then was all “good,” glitzy taste—with elegant, understated stylings and unfussy shows, an attitude that continues to serve her today. Says the designer, “Fashion fosters clichés of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.” Wynn Las Vegas, 702-7703495; prada.com

With tastemakers and trendsetters focused on exclusivity, this spring is all about the capsule collection. There are three at the top of the list, and Giorgio Armani (Via Bellagio, 702-8938327; armani.com) naturally helms the season. The designer takes modernity to the next level with a just-forspring capsule collection in his New Normal line launched last year, offering a reinterpreted look at his own iconic styles. Newer, lightweight pieces offer a fresher take
on spring’s suiting options with checkered blazers, band-collared shirts, and a long flowing skirt in soft color palettes of gray, white, and navy.... It’s all about rock ’n’ roll for après-ski favorite Moncler (Wynn Las Vegas, 702-770-3452; moncler.com) —the brand launches an all-black men’s capsule collection celebrating The Rolling Stones’ 50-plus-year history. Our standout picks? Four leather jackets lined with the band’s famed tongueand-lips logo....

The Edgardo Osorio for Salvatore Ferragamo collection features 11 styles, including rainbow wedges and winged sandals, reinterpreted from iconic Ferragamo designs from the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. Suited Up The CapTains aT aria’s Carbone geT a major wardrobe boosT, CourTesy of designer ZaC Posen.
The next time you sit down for dinner at Aria’s cinematic homage to the great Italian-American restaurants of the mid-20th century, Carbone—which landed on the Strip by way of New York’s West Village this past fall—know that the captain attending to your table is wearing a uniform designed by yet another fixation of the fashion-conscious: Zac Posen. It may come as something of a surprise to find out the burgundyhued tuxes are
products of Posen’s, who is more known for his flowing, red carpet-worthy gowns than menswear silhouettes. But the tuxes, designed as a favor to Posen’s friends Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick of Major Food Group, neatly showcase the new Brooks Brothers creative director’s impeccable tailoring skills and feature the kind of vintage-inspired details, including wide-peaked lapels and matching bowties, that recall the glory days of 1950s nightclub fashion. In true Vegas form, we’ll continue to take our service with a side of style. Aria, 877230-2742; aria.com

Hip-Hop to it! The ’90s are back (and beTTer Than ever) in Guess’s fab collab wiTh A$AP Roc . by lisa ferrandino
Cool Like Dat: Guess helps A$AP Rocky (top, far left) recall ’90s hip-hop fashion tropes in a new collection featuring (right, from top) a knit stripe pullover ($79), an oversize denim jacket ($198), and skinny-fit overalls ($188).
72 vegasmagazine.com
As if being one of the world’s most popular hip-hop recording artists weren’t enough, rapper and fashion darling A$AP Rocky has partnered with Paul Marciano to produce Guess Originals x A$AP Rocky, the debut collection from the Guess Originals initiative. The pieces are all vintage-cool with an edge, born from what A$AP calls “a personal collection” of quintessential ’90s fashion influences: oversize denim jackets, overalls, and in-your-face, logocentric stylings. “It’s taking archival designs and adding a
new twist,” says the 27-year-old. “I wanted to bring back that feeling and revisit that nostalgic time in hip-hop and urban culture when Guess was a household name.” With a denimheavy focus, the throwback line has something for everyone, from denim trucker jackets for the guys to acid-washed high-rise shorts for the ladies. Guess even debuts its gue$$ logo (encased in the signature inverted triangle synonymous with the ’90s) as a nod to A$AP—and the past reprised. Fashion Show, 702-691-2541; guess.com

by christina clemente
Spring is coming: Cue the pop of color! This season, it’s electric—blue, that is. Amidst the hubbub of last year’s September shows, the hue (and all its variants) reigned supreme, from pastel eye masks at Chanel to smoky shadows at DVF. Marc Jacobs kept it “downtown” in a look created by NARS, with models sporting spots of deep turquoise on the eye’s inner corners. “It’s sophisticated, but she’s living her life, so it’s very real at the same time,” explains Founder and Creative Director François Nars. To re-create, use the label’s Dark Angel Velvet Shadow Stick ($29) all over the eyelid, Solomon Islands Eye Paint ($25) smudged on the inner corners, then Cressida Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow ($29). At the Missoni show, makeup artist Lucia Pieroni also went for a cooler vibe with bright swaths of cyan, but suggests keeping the rest of the face clean off the catwalk. To re-create the look, try lining both lashes then smudging with Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre in Ocean Light ($36). I
t is one of those frigid New York City mornings when you can practically breathe icicles and the only sane place to be is by the fire with a mug of hot cocoa. Naomi Watts is undaunted. She and her two young boys—Sasha, 7, and Kai, 6, the little blondies from her 11-year relationship with actor Liev Schreiber—are braving the elements like an intrepid band of Arctic explorers: Parkas with fur collars, wool beanies down around the eyebrows, scarves over turtlenecks over base layers. The trials urbanites must endure for an outing to Whole Foods! Watts looks relaxed and happy even as a paparazzi photographer trails them back to their Tribeca apartment. The actress has not had much time lately for routine errands. Between this year and last, her name has appeared on eight different movies, including some of the most acclaimed projects of her career. Birdman, While We’re Young, and St. Vincent were fêted by critics and honored on the awards circuit, and Watts is now a full-fledged sci-fi icon as well. As the abused wife turned rebellion leader in the popular Divergent series, Watts returns for a second time as the butt-kicking antagonist, Evelyn Eaton, in Allegiant (scheduled for release on March 18). The actress joined the massively popular franchise, based on the YA novels by Veronica Roth, after killing off Kate Winslet’s character in last spring’s Insurgent. “We needed someone who could play brittle and damaged on the outside and yet carry immense power under the surface, and Naomi delivers that magical mix and makes it look effortless,” says Doug Wick, the series co-producer. “She’s also someone who’s just, you know, great to hang out and gossip with.” The part is a departure for Watts, who at this stage in her career had not quite pictured herself heading a rat-a-tat army in a dystopian walled-in version of Chicago. “It’s something of a stretch but in terms of character, Evelyn is someone I can appreciate,” Watts says. “She is a survivor and she’s made the most of her experience despite a bunch of twists and setbacks.” At 47, Watts gets major points herself for endurance. She struggled for years to find steady footing in Hollywood after a childhood that she describes as “less than consistent.” Born in seaside Shoreham, England, and reared there and in Wales, Watts was 4 when her mom, an antiques dealer and designer, split from her dad, a road manager and sound engineer for Pink Floyd. voice and manic laughter can be heard in the background on the album Dark Side of the Moon, died of an apparent heroin overdose when Naomi was just 7. “I wish I could say otherwise but I don’t have any clear memories of my father,” Watts says. (The rock gene lives on nevertheless. Watts recently posted a shot of herself backstage with David Bowie to mark the singer’s passing in January.) Watts and her older brother, Ben, a photographer who lives near her in Manhattan, relocated to Australia with their mother and stepdad when Naomi was 14. “Mum was young and did not have much of a plan,” Watts says. “I think there’s a combination of grit and perseverance and tricking yourself into believing things are okay even if you’re not getting the results you want— that’s what I learned from her. Even if you’re being batted around, you keep going. It’s basic human determination.” Watts caught the acting bug after seeing the movie Fame at a young age, and took drama classes in Australia before heading off to Japan for a modeling stint in her late teens. Success was spotty at first. She landed a part in an Australian romance, For Love Alone, in 1986, but the roles that followed were of the type that now make for amusing late-night YouTube viewing. When she was around 18, Watts, wearing ’80s hair bows and shoulder pads, shot a Tampax commercial for Australian TV. But even that was a bridge to somewhere. “I was fresh out of school and wasn’t thinking, This is so humiliating,” she says. “I was thinking, Fantastic! A paycheck. Now I can buy a Mini Cooper and drive myself to auditions rather than taking three buses and a train.” In one of her acting classes, Watts met another rising talent who would soon burst onto the global stage and help open doors for her. Nicole Kidman was a friend and early mentor and the name above the marquee in Flirting, the 1991 boarding-school romance that was Watts’s first real break in Hollywood. “Nic was incredibly generous in introducing me to people and showing me that an Aussie girl from around the corner can make it big,” Watts says. But as Kidman continued to soar with blockbusters like Far and Away and Batman Forever, Watts, who was now living full-time in LA, scraped the barrel with gigs like the TV movie Bermuda Triangle and the straight-to-video train wreck Children of the Corn IV. She recalls that period as a time spent “driving 45 minutes deep into the San Fernando Valley to wait as six actors auditioned before me, only to have to sit in two more hours of traffic on the 405 freeway coming home.” None of it made Watts give up. “I would play mental games with myself,” she says. “Rather than dwell on why I didn’t have this role or that opportunity, I would
say, ‘Well, I do have a SAG card and I do have an agent and I am perfectly fine until the right something comes along.’” That something would be Mulholland Drive. Even after more than a decade in the business, Watts was an unknown in David Lynch’s 2001 noir mystery. She plays a wide-eyed Midwestern starlet new to LA who puts aside her dreams of fame to help an amnesiac woman figure out her true identity. Major surrealism ensues. There are torrid lesbian scenes, a frightening cowboy, and a miniature elderly couple that comes crawling out of a mysterious box. Moviegoers went “Huh?” but the film became an instant cult classic. Agents started chasing Watts down with scripts. Big directors wanted to meet her. Children of the Corn V would have to wait. Watts received her first Academy Award nomination two years later as a recovering drug addict struggling to live a normal suburban existence in 21 Grams. She followed that with standout performances in the offbeat comedy I Heart Huckabees and opposite Sean Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Watts played muse to Hollywood’s most famous gorilla in Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake and earned another Oscar nod for 2012’s The Impossible, based on a true story about a mother swept up by the 2004 tsunami that struck Thailand. Horror fans loved her in the sleeper hit The Ring and its sequel. “Even if you feel completely connected to the material it often doesn’t go the way you think it will,” Watts says. “It’s no different than anything else in life. You can’t calculate how things will turn out. All you can do is try to have fun, push yourself to do well, be with people you love being with, and stay in the moment. The rest is basically out of your hands.”
B
ack inside her warm apartment, Watts is enjoying a rare hiatus from early call times and long days on location. She was up early to meditate, then fixed breakfast for the kids, caught up on phone calls, and may sneak in a workout before turning to a couple of scripts her agent wants her to consider. Watts is on the board of the New York Academy of Art and for a decade has been a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for a program helping to raise awareness of AIDS issues. Still, her schedule today is blissfully open. “My biggest challenge,” she says, “might be figuring out whether to read the boys one of the Narnia books or Harry Potter.” Watts and Schreiber try as much as possible not to be working at the same time so that one of them can focus on parenthood exclusively. They never married, but they have vowed to keep things as stable as possible for Sasha and Kai.
Watts recently purchased a large-scale painting by British artist Harland Miller. It is part of a series in which he reimagines covers of vintage Penguin books. This one is a made-up volume titled Love Stretch Me No Longer in This Rough World. Those words hit a chord the minute Watts saw the piece in the gallery, she says. Before she and Schreiber got together, Watts dated Heath Ledger for several years. Asked if coupling is harder when both people are well-known, Watts does not hesitate. “Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not,” she says. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have to work on it. Being an actor doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it’s the same if you’re a doctor or a couple of lawyers. You have high-pressure jobs, lots of hours, stresses that come at you unexpectedly—and you have to figure out how to be present in the midst of it all.” Watts knows her kids are about to burst through the door and make the day all about mommy time, which is more than fine with her. Her schedule is about to go bonkers again. Watts costars with Schreiber later this year in The Bleeder about the life of heavyweight fighter Chuck Wepner (the film shot in New York so both actors could be at home). In June, she appears opposite Oliver Platt in the psychological thriller Shut-In. She recently wrapped production on The Book of Henry, a crime drama about a precocious boy who falls for the daughter of the New York City Police Commissioner. Watts plays the boy’s single mom. She also has another Divergent installment ahead—Ascendant hits theaters in 2017. Watts is reluctant to say this is the culmination of everything she struggled to achieve on those drives out to the Valley. “This isn’t the life I imagined,” she says. “In many ways, it’s far, far better, and yet I look at what’s possible—I mean, look at Frances McDormand or Helen Mirren or, come on, Meryl Streep—and I go, ‘Okay, there’s still a lot of room to grow and improve.’” The trick is to do that and still appreciate what you have. When Watts was making King Kong in the early 2000s, she paid a visit to Fay Wray, the legendary star of the original 1933 film. Watts and Peter Jackson and a few others crammed into Wray’s tiny book-lined apartment on New York’s Upper West Side as Wray, who was in her 90s and near the end of her life, told story after story about a career that spanned 57 years. “Something beautiful happened near the end,” Watts says, her voice growing soft. “She leaned over and whispered in my ear. The specific words are a blur now but the feeling was that she was passing the baton. It wasn’t from her to me specifically but more like her generation making room for a new one. ‘It’s your turn. It’s your moment.’ Since then, I always think, you have to be awake to that.”

A deft blend of beauty and technology, the playful Cartier Panthères et Colibri Calibre 9915 MC watch ($183,000) offers an artful tableau on its dial: a diamond-adorned panther at rest with a hummingbird nearby. When the winding crown is pressed, the scene comes to life: A baby panther (hidden behind its mother) peeks out as though to chase the golden bird. Fun, yes—but functional too, for the hummingbird’s position on the dial indicates the power reserve of the new 367-part movement. Vacheron Constantin unveils its new Fabuleux Ornements collection of timepieces. An in-house-made, ultrathin 117-part movement powers each watch in this series celebrating the decorative arts of different cultures. This version ($135,000), based on Chinese embroidery, is crafted in 18k gold and features a jade cloisonné dial with hand-engraved leaves of mother-of-pearl and pink opal surrounded by 145 round-cut diamonds. Just 20 pieces will be made. The gray mother-of-pearl dial has a fine cut at 7 o’clock (a nod to the time, 7:08, when the founder of the brand was born), that offers a view of the tourbillon aperture. Ca’D’Oro, Grand Canal Shoppes at Venetian and Palazzo, 702-650-0225; parmigiani.ch In honor of the 85th anniversary of the famed Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso (with a case that turns over to offer a second dial), the brand unveils a host of new Reversos, including the One Duetto Moon ($11,500). Powered by a manually wound mechanical movement, the watch displays two faces: One side offers the moon phase via a mother-of-pearl lunar disk; the other side is a classic time indication of hours and minutes. FOR THE LADIES: STUN THEM WITH substance
For the past few years, premier watch brands attending the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva have given greater face time to the fairer sex when it comes to mechanical-watch offerings (savvy women, it turns out, also care about what’s under the hood). In response, a host of brands are giving women timepieces with substance, blending state-of-the-art technology with beautiful design to create a complete
package that speaks to both form and function. In the watch industry over the past half-decade, fans, fanatics, and connoisseurs have witnessed the term métiers d’art take on a life of its own, and this year is no exception. In fact, several brands have gone above and beyond when it comes to designing watch dials as mini canvases—the results are stellar masterpieces that, in another form, could easily grace art-museum walls.
Piaget also looks to the night sky with the new Limelight Stella ($29,700), the brand’s first complication created just for women. Powered by a mechanical movement, it features a diamond-adorned moon-phase indication at 12 o’clock as well as an aperture base and case bedecked in diamonds. But the watch is driven by serious technology: The astronomical moon depiction requires a mere one-day correction after 122 years. Encore Las Vegas, 702-770-5470; piaget.com

It is the year of the pilot’s watch at IWC Schaffhausen, and the new, 46mm Big Pilot’s Watch Annual Calendar Edition “Le Petit Prince” ($32,400) is a grand salute to the theme. The IWC-manufactured caliber houses high-tech materials, as well as an 18k gold rotor. FOR THE GENTLEMEN: GO RETRO ELEGANT!
SIHH 2016 saw a host of innovative timepieces for men that offered masterly design but also emphasized simplicity and refinement. With the move away from the big and bold watches of a decade ago, many brands exhibited either ultrathin or clean, classically sophisticated pieces. But this isn’t your grandfather’s understated wristwear. While some of the sportier watches were made chic with rose and (retro!) yellow

gold, others have taken on an edgier look—and, equipped with highly crafted calibers that pack a punch, an extra dose of durability. No matter the style, 2016’s models are about versatility, offering small complications and additional features (calendars, multi-timers, chronographs, and more) geared for the guy whose watch is a consistent partner in both his work and play.

Baume & Mercier continues the saga of its Clifton collection with the Clifton Chronograph Complete Calendar watch in steel ($4,990). The newest, stainless-steel 4810 TwinFly Chronograph 110 Years Edition ($6,900) is a flyback chronograph, meaning that it allows the wearer to time an event, stop, reset, and restart the chronograph with just one press on the pusher at 4 o’clock. Complex to build, it is an exceedingly advanced chronograph that allows timing of multiple events at one time. It is powered by a self-winding movement that also offers dual time indication and 72 hours of power reserve. Just 1,110 pieces will be made. CARMEN MIRANDA MEETS WILLY WONKA AT THE BUFFET AT WYNN LAS VEGAS.
If you thought you knew the Vegas buffet, think again. At Wynn, Executive Chef Russell Parker and Executive Vice President of Design and Development Roger Thomas have joined forces in ramping up the resort’s Technicolor-tinted one-stop shop for everything from sushi to rodizio-style meats, but the addition of more than 120 new dishes to the Buffet’s menu isn’t the only update. Along with its main culinary stations, the space now features a color palette of Swiss coffee and delicate vine (along with, of course, the feeling that you are dining in a hothouse on steroids), a state-of-the-art sound system, and an expanded patisserie with a three-pool chocolate fountain at its center. “We wanted to make it so you’d have a hard time choosing because it all looks good,” Parker says. Your biggest challenge just might be deciding how many return trips to make. Wynn Las Vegas, 702-770-3340; wynnlasvegas.com

It’s showtIme for the largest sports and entertaInment venue to ever hIt the strIp, the 20,000-seat T-Mobile ArenA.
In 2013, when plans to build a 20,000-seat arena on the Vegas Strip were first announced by MGM Resorts International and AEG Live, many wondered if the risky joint venture would ever come to fruition. Just three short years later, the venue now called the T-Mobile Arena is set to open on April 6 with a concert by hometown heroes The Killers, Wayne Newton, and Shamir. Then on opening weekend, Guns N’ Roses will kick off their long-awaited reunion tour at the arena. “Guns N’ Roses choosing to return to the stage in their full glory on the Las Vegas Strip to open T-Mobile Arena is rock ’n’ roll history,” says Bobby Reynolds, vice president of booking for AEG Live Las Vegas. Less visible but still instrumental in the venue’s development was Populous, a global design firm responsible for conceptualizing big-name arenas from Orlando’s Amway Center to London’s O2. “Everyone in the sports and entertainment market wanted to design the new venue for Las Vegas,” says Brad Clark, the firm’s senior principal. “We celebrated
with victory cigars and dug in the next day to design something special.” “Something special” is an understatement. From the Strip, the arena’s striking glass façade shines with high-tech LED surfacing that doubles as an evolving billboard; inside, a deftly tailored seating bowl optimizes sightlines. “While Las Vegas doesn’t yet have a professional sports franchise,” Clark offers, “Populous was challenged to create a design that would adapt to a future NBA or NHL team.” In the meantime, strategic partnerships with UFC, Top Rank Boxing, and Mayweather Promotions will see a variety of highly anticipated sporting events take center stage, while VIP spaces like the cantilevered Hyde Lounge and a collection of posh bunker suites offer exclusive viewing experiences. “We were able to do things here that we’ve never done before,” Clark adds. “We asked ourselves, ‘Why not create something authentic in a place that’s defined by re-creations of other places?’ Crazy, huh?” 844-582-7362; t-mobilearena.com

How have you noticed gift-buying evolve? “Fifteen to 20 years ago, people were buying tons of collectibles—figurines and things of that nature.
There’s definitely less of that kind of buying now, but in its place you’ll find something like jewelry.” Why do you think that is? “People want everything in their lives to reflect their aesthetic. They want to express themselves in everything they do, and wearables are ways of accomplishing that.” What’s the biggest trend in gift-buying?

Put 25 college students in a room and charge them with solving problems in the hospitality industry, and it’s anyone’s guess what you’ll get. “We’ll startle everyone,” says the director of UNLV’s new Hospitality Lab, Robert Rippee, a veteran hospitality innovator himself and former SVP of marketing for Venetian and Palazzo. “Innovating could involve robotics, drone technology, advanced computing, “ he says. “We may be looking
at AI, the room of the future, who knows?” In fact, the new lab is part of the university’s International Gaming Institute, and not just a product of academic midnight musings. It came into existence when Governor Brian Sandoval’s Office of Economic Development gave money to expand UNLV’s hospitality program in the same tradition as its gaming initiative. “In turn, we’d market the intellectual
property or spin it off to the private sector,” Rippee explains. With cooperation from the engineering, architecture, and data science departments, the lab—which will be guided by Rippee and an impressive roster of visiting experts—culminates in a Shark Tank-like judging panel. You’ve reduced, you’ve reused, you’ve recycled— now it’s time to reclaim. Sunburst Shutters, which hurtled onto the scene in Phoenix in the 1970s and opened soon after in Las Vegas, was already known for its Polywood recyclable shutters, and now it ups its green cred by offering the country’s first reclaimed-wood shutters. Its plantationstyle louvered shutters are made from naturally weathered wood—harvested from older buildings, fences, and other types of construction—that would have otherwise been destined for the landfill. Aside from its environmental benefits and natural beauty, reclaimed timber is often formed from more mature trees, and is more durable and less prone to warping and splitting than virgin timber from trees grown commercially. With knots and swirls of the kind you couldn’t reproduce if you tried, no two slats are just alike. These rustic beauties are perfectly imperfect. Sunburst Shutters & Window Fashions, 6480 W. The stunning views from the prized perches of our city’s massive new developments are part of their appeal, but modern designs, next-generation technology, and property as a safe haven for high rollers looking to diversify are making for exciting times for the leaders of one of the most massive land grabs in recent Las Vegas
history. Mike Meldman, chairman and CEO of Discovery Land Company, has partnered with the Howard Hughes Corporation to create the Summit Club, a 555-acre country-club community in Summerlin. Rich MacDonald is the visionary developer behind MacDonald Highlands (macdonaldhighlands.com), a
country-club community that has more than 200 lots with unblockable vistas available. Bob Barnhart of Luxurious Real Estate (luxurious-estates.com) is working with Growth Luxury Homes (growth luxuryhomes.com) on about some $150 million of high-end spec houses. We talked to them about what’s on Las Vegas’s horizons.

By Andy WAng
Why is there so much enthusiasm for building luxury homes in Las Vegas? Rich MacDonald: Most
people realize real estate is a good hedge against inflation and that it’s a safe place to park your money. Part of the rationale is that they think a nice expensive house is something they can liquidate and get value out
of. I believe in that. Bob Barnhart: When you look at the success of Howard Hughes with Downtown Summerlin and you look at the success of the Ridges, and you couple that with Discovery Land Company and look at all that momentum, you’re seeing homes turn over and prices increase—2015 was a really good year.
What are some of the design elements and amenities driving the market? Mike Meldman: People
want homes with the best amenities, but most important is to have places where their families can gather and be comfortable. Generous great rooms, theaters, game rooms, and

to get into the pool! It makes you want to tear your house down and start over again. The sophistication of the new construction is just mindblowing. Do you see a ceiling for the Vegas market? MM: We believe the upside at The Summit is limitless. There is a finite number of properties in the community so every sale creates even more demand. The investment in the property will be over $100 million, and as we develop the property and build the golf course and clubhouse, the lots and homes will become even more valuable. RM: For most high-end buyers, there’s such value in Vegas. You build a house in Hawaii, you’re paying twice as much a foot. That’s also true in California and in Miami. We’re seeing prices wind their way up, but it’s got a long way to go.

Nevada Ballet Theatre held its largest fundraiser of the year, the 32nd-annual Black & White Ball, at Wynn Las Vegas. Sponsored by Cartier, the lavish celebration kicked off with an invitation-only cocktail party inside the jeweler’s Wynn Esplanade boutique and later served as a platform for honoring legendary performer Olivia Newton-John with the ballet’s prestigious Woman of the Year award. More than 500 guests—including Leeza Gibbons, Marie Osmond, Mary Wilson, and Pia Zadora— enjoyed live music, refreshments courtesy of Southern Wine & Spirits, and an auction that featured prizes like a private in-home dinner catered by chef Mario Carbone.

LIVING LAS VEGAS
LIP SERVICE
With hundreds of restaurants on the Vegas Strip alone, finding one worthy of high praise is the kind of ambitious venture that can only be made easier with the help of an unbiased guide. Enter Lip Smacking Foodie Tours, a locally owned culinary tour operator founded by 32-year-old Donald Contursi in 2015. We joined Contursi, a restaurantindustry veteran, for one of his five-stop Strip tours, traipsing from Bardot Brasserie and Sage inside Aria, to Estiatorio Milos and Jaleo inside Cosmopolitan, to Hexx inside Paris for small bites and cocktails (thankfully, the walking did its part to counteract the caloric intake). Just as eye-opening as the food— which ran the gamut from escargots and calamari to Spanish paella and beanto-bar chocolate—was Contursi’s commentary. How else would we know that Sage houses one of the largest absinthe collections in North America, or that Jaleo’s open-flame paella pit comes complete with its own $1-million ventilation system for filtering out all that orangewood smoke? “All of these restaurants have something beautiful about them,” Contursi muses. “I’m just the one who knows and gets to show other people.” From $125. 888-681-4388; vegasfoodietour.com
