The RivieRa’s implosion is The laTesT in a decades-long hisToRy of showy deTonaTions. By Sarah FeldBerg

It is the best kind of magic trick. One minute there is a building, a tower, a monument to stacked chips, spilled drinks and dreams dashed or fulfilled. The next there is nothing. With the push of a button, a self-contained world becomes rubble. This

summer, the Riviera, former home of Liberace and those famous Crazy Girls posteriors, was the latest casino to go boom in a pair of carefully engineered demolitions. But the tradition of detonating our former haunts dates back more than 20 years to 1993,

when a crowd of about 200,000 watched 365 pounds of dynamite turn the Dunes to dust, its neon sign still shining and the words “No Vacancy” splashed across its marquee. In the years since, implosions have become a beloved local tradition, an only-in-Vegas

spectacle that celebrates the city’s constant evolutionary march toward what’s new and next. The Landmark’s toppling was famously captured for the film Mars Attacks in 1995. The Hacienda fell under a hail of fireworks on New Year’s Eve 1996. In 2007, the New

Frontier announced its own death with glittery fireworks on the building’s facade counting down to zero. Crowds often cheer when a casino crumbles, but just as thrilling as the symphony of explosions and the crash of concrete is seeing what rises from the ashes.

LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF

My favorite regular childhood road trip involved piling in to our ’78 Buick station wagon with its rubbery red Naugahyde seats, special-ordered by my practical parents for their wipeability but more memorable for their power to retain heat and scorch bare child thighs. Las Vegas was the halfway point on our pilgrimages to the beach, and we’d look for it along I-15 headed south; whoever spotted that little strip of neon lights first won. We always stayed well off the Strip in a drive-up motel, and we always went to glamorous Circus Circus. Fast forward a few decades: That “spotting” game is long obsolete since the city’s perma-glow can be seen from space, and I’m raising a child who, around the age I was gawking at palm trees, has mastered daytime sequins and is a known regular at raw bars around town. Of course, every parent has these “When I was your age” moments that point to fast-moving times, but I’d say they’re most pronounced in

Las Vegas. After all, when I was stopping over as a child, I would have been among 8 or 9 million annual visitors; we’re now surpassing 42 million each year. Some of my early memories would have been approximately the same time Las Vegas first put two department stores together in one mall (page 66), and there are now five walkable Louis Vuitton stores along Las Vegas Boulevard (a new Vuitton concept store opens in Palazzo in September). We’ve passed through the city’s thematization and its Epcotification to being one of the world’s most recognizable original brands. It might be hard for my child to eventually move away and downshift into a reality that’s more like the rest of the world’s, but until then, we’re enjoying the ride.

STAR MAN BAZ—STAR CROSSED LOVE BRINGS THE BEST OF BAZ LUHRMANN’S HIT LIST TO THE PALAZZO THEATER.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE PALAZZO LAS VEGAS

BY JOHN KATSILOMETES

The term flitting around Las Vegas is “Baz Buzz,” and its focus is a terrifically talent-filled and inventive stage show at Venetian, Baz—Star Crossed Love, which knits together some of the most inspired storylines of writer and director Baz Luhrmann. Scenes from Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom, and The Great Gatsby are reimagined for the stage, using dialogue from the films, with the segments performed by a set of four principal singers and a backing band. Impressively, the Palazzo Theater—the former home of Jersey Boys—has been renovated to the specifications of the LAbased indie creative team, For the Record. Three runways extend to the audience for a show that is immersive, aggressive, and uniquely chic in Vegas. For the Record Executive Producer Shane Scheel talks of the production’s extensive “remodeling, reinventing, and recasting,” after previous limited engagements. The timing of this show nicely coincides with a Netflix original series from the director, The Get Down; the first six episodes were released August 12, with the rest of the season to come later this year. As for Baz—Star Crossed Love, Scheel says, “I want this show to be around for a very long time.” We’re all abuzz! Palazzo Theater, 866-983-4279; venetian.com

BREWED AWAKENING A TRIO OF BUZZY INDEPENDENT COFFEE SHOPS IS BRINGING TOP-QUALITY JAVA (AND MORE) TO VEGAS. BY SARAH FELDBERG

No more wishful browsing on your Portland and Brooklyn friends’ Instagrams! Fancy foam and fancier brewing are now part of the fabric of Las Vegas.

Type the words “Las Vegas Strip” into the store locator on the Starbucks website, and a forest of green pins sprouts from the map. There are 36 total in the tourist corridor. I counted. But step off Las Vegas Boulevard and a new wave of independent coffee shops is springing up around town, offering caffeine with a side of creativity and character. At Tiabi Coffee & Waffle

(iwanttiabi.com), with locations in Centennial Hills and on Maryland Parkway, thin, crispy waffles support sandwich fixings and lattes come in flavors like lavender white chocolate and honey cream with a dash of nutmeg. Henderson’s Bad Owl Coffee (badowl coffee.com) has generated international buzz since opening in February with nods to the Harry Potter

franchise like a Butter Brew latte and Platform 9¾ sign, but it’s the coffee that keeps customers coming back: Japanese-style 16-hour cold brew for the purists and mint mojito lattes for more casual sippers. And true bean geeks are flocking to Coffee Hunter (702-5865002), the Eastern Avenue cafe that opened in March. Along with coffee from revered third-wave roaster

Stumptown, the shop serves an array of locally made snacks and Instagram-ready drinks like macchiatos in waffle shot glasses and saltedcream cold brew. Co-owner Hunter Hawkins sees a revolution brewing in Vegas. “All of us are a community, and we’re here to push this. It’s a group effort,” she says. “People are expecting more from their coffee.”

After drawing more than 100,000 fans last year, the biggest block party in Vegas is back for its fourth annual celebration of music, art, food, and the ambitious spirit of Downtown. Here, art curator Charlotte Dutoit offers her don’t-miss attractions: Big Rig Jig “It’s two stories tall,” says Dutoit of the sculpture of tanker trucks twisted together by artist Mike Ross. Find it outside the old Western casino, housing more than 100 exhibitions this year. Major Lazer “Their shows are colossal,” says Dutoit. “Massive production and raw energy.” The EDM chart-toppers share the main stage with Mumford & Sons and other headliners. Shepard Fairey Remember that iconic Barack Obama HOPE poster? Fairey is responsible for that, and is creating a Downtown mural that will stick around long after the festival wraps up. A Rabbit Rampage Amanda Parer delivers an “invasion of gigantic rabbits” that Dutoit promises will be a “must-see” piece of art. Location, Location, Location The festival is in the heart of the city—“where people live and hang out”—instead of the desert or a park that’s miles away. “It makes the production more ambitious and laborious, but the result is worth it. It’s magical.” September 23–25; lifeisbeautiful.com

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS NATALIE YOUNG’S CHOW IS MORE THAN A GOOD RESTAURANT—IT’S AN INCUBATOR FOR CULINARY TALENT.

At Chow, chef Natalie Young is mentoring a group of “soldier” interns.

“EVEN IF THEY DON’T DECIDE TO BE CHEFS, THE THINGS THAT I’M TEACHING THEM WILL HELP THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES.” —NATALIE

YOUNG

Giving back is embedded in chef Natalie Young’s DNA. The owner of Downtown’s hotspot EAT and new Chinese and chicken joint Chow, Young has gotten a couple of generous breaks herself in her time, and now she’s passing it on. She recently teamed with West Prep’s Core Academy to form a culinary internship program for 16 high schoolers. Starting from the ground up (think busboy to dishwasher to, eventually, line cook), “We teach them the five mother sauces, how to break down a whole fish, and how to be soldiers in the kitchen,” Young says. “Even if they don’t decide to be chefs, the things that I’m teaching will help them throughout their lives. Our first class covered how to fill out a job application, what to wear, and how to shake somebody’s hand.” The kids work with Young three days a week. “One girl that I was teaching how to be a hostess told me, ‘I can’t do it.’ I sat the group down and said, ‘Can’t is not an option. You don’t quit when somebody gives you constructive criticism,’” Young says. What’s next? “I want to make this program available to felons and underserved kids,” she says. “Everything I wanted, I have. The way that I find happiness is by helping others.” 102 Fremont St., 702-998-0574; chowdtlv.com

Scene cheers “each drink can become an elevated experience with a fitting choice of vodka.” —tony abou-ganim

vodka en vogue as the whiskey mania ebbs, good old vodka is back, baby—and with an upscale twist.

A clear comeback: Master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim’s recipe for the perfect martini? Vodka stirred with ice, unadulterated by vermouth, and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Take that, James Bond!

46  vegasmagazine.com

These days, vodka is increasingly what’s in cocktail-hour glasses. For a while, a revived interest in whiskey and other brown spirits nudged the clear elixir out of the spotlight, but now a growing number of unusual and luxe vodkas are fueling a renewed surge. “Vodka’s heritage and flavor nuances deserve a measure of reverence,” says Tony Abou-Ganim, the award-winning mixologist and author of Vodka Distilled. As smooth and versatile as ever, the newest crop of vodkas also comes with a twist—stories to tell. For example, Hangar 1’s limited edition Fog Point Vodka (USA; $125 for 750ml) is a grape-based vodka, distilled from wine (specifically, Bonny Doon’s 2012 Le Cigar Blanc), and then cut with water collected from San Francisco’s world-famous fog—a love letter to the distiller’s NorCal home. Across the Pacific, Soyombo Super Premium Mongolian Vodka (Mongolia; $30) is a bottled history lesson: The wheat-based spirit is distilled on the site of the last Mongolian emperor’s palace and filtered through such precious materials as quartz, silver, and diamonds. Finally, Double Cross Vodka (Slovakia; $37) comes packaged in a sleek, sculptural bottle made from high-end French crystal and laser-cut with select lines of Slovakian poetry. Regardless of which you choose, drink it with respect: “Take your time,” counsels Abou-Ganim. “Vodka should be sipped and savored rather than shot back in a flash.” Cheers to that!

Vegas partners with the Las Vegas Food & Wine FestiVaL to throw the best food and beverage bash of the year.

Med à la mod! The Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival wraps up with a Sunday brunch at Mediterranean destination Cleo at SLS.

By RoB KachelRiess

This September, the Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival invades SLS Las Vegas—no holds barred, and nothing is off limits. That includes the valet area. “They’re going to have to park the cars somewhere else,” laughs Alan Semsar. “We’ll have the front drive all to ourselves, serving the best food around.” The

48  vegasmagazine.com

CEO of Barcelona Enterprises has a long history of running culinary events in big cities. The festival, now in its seventh year, is one of his staples. “It’s bigger than ever,” says Semsar, who’s teaming up with Vegas for the four-day event. “We’ll be covering a lot of ground throughout the property.”

The Grand Tasting will wrap around the outdoor pool for two nights and extend toward the lobby, with food and drink stations showcasing not only the best restaurants in Vegas, but also some of the biggest names in the industry. José Andrés, Charlie Palmer, and François Payard are among the culinary masters taking

part. “Being next to the Strip is good,” says Payard. “People in Vegas always like to be outside.” He notes that he’ll be watching Vegas temperatures before he commits to his outdoor desserts. Among the famed pastry chef’s contenders: macaron ice cream sandwiches, shots of cold coconut desserts, and hot

and cold piña colada shots. Andrés played a major role in bringing another culinary extravaganza, Dine-N-Dash, to SLS last year. “Many of my friends who are great chefs have opened restaurants in Las Vegas,” he says. “We’re seeing more people traveling to Vegas for these culinary experiences.”

to Dine for

José Andrés (ABOVE RIGHT) may make an enormous paella, but he hosts an intimate dinner at Bazaar Meat (PICTURED) as part of the Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival.

“IT’S GOOD TO CHECK OUT THE NEW RESTAURANTS IN VEGAS. YOU KNOW WHY? THEY HAVE SO MUCH POWER.” —FRAN IS PAYARD Art for dessert? Bien sûr! François Payard is bringing his best to Vegas this year.

Also on the festival’s can’tmiss list are afterparties at Foxtail, cooking demos, and an intimate multicourse dinner at Bazaar Meat, hosted by Andrés himself. The festival wraps with a Sunday brunch at chef Danny Elmaleh’s old-Hollywoodinflected Mediterranean restaurant, Cleo. With hotels and casinos putting their resources behind elite restaurants and culinary events, Vegas has broad appeal for culinary festivalgoers. Payard says it’s hard to find such convenience in other food-driven cities. And, he notes, it pays for chefs to do their research here. “It’s good to check out the new restaurants [in Vegas]. You know why? Because they have so much power; when they want a new concept in a restaurant, they can make it work. I think Las Vegas is like going to New York City. What do you want to eat tonight? You want Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian? That’s the rhythm of the hotels. They’re all different.” Andrés expects plenty of, ahem, researchers this year. “When we held Dine-N-Dash at SLS, it was a great event. SLS is an amazing destination for people who love food, and I think this festival will draw a similar crowd.” September 15–18; vegasfoodandwine.com

Scene exclusive Grammy award-winning Ray LaMontagne rarely gives interviews—he lets his music speak for itself.

folk hero Ray LaMontagne brings his genre-bending music to the Pearl at the Palms.

With an approach to songwriting styled after Otis Redding, Van Morrison, and Elvis Costello, Ray LaMontagne is an evolutionary artist. He concedes to a brooding persona in his early years that has given way to personal exploration. His latest album, Ouroboros, is laden with warm vocals and what reviewers have found to be a hazy production approach. The album is a consequence of what LaMontagne calls an ongoing “Velvet Underground phase.” The 43-year-old singer-songwriter is also fiercely private, but spoke to Vegas in advance of his September 16 concert at The Palms. “I had a real self-criticism streak that was really harsh when I was younger,” he says. “It drove me to be a better songwriter, achieve more and reach a bigger audience… but now I just approach my writing from a place of joy. I’m lucky to do it, and I’m more of a mellow dude than I used to be.” He’ll admit that he doesn’t quite get the Vegas vibe when he visits. “I sometimes want to yell at everybody and tell them to stop putting money into those machines,” he laughs. “But having said that, I am sure there are probably lovely neighborhoods and lovely people that I don’t see when I come in and hit it and split it. There are a lot of places like that. LA is like that, too, so I am open-minded.” The Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms; palms.com

WITH GIGI HADID FRONTING ITS NEW CAMPAIGN AND A FALL COLLECTION THAT MIXES PLAYFULNESS WITH ELEGANCE, MAX MARA IS SIZZLING! BY BETSY PERRY

In one sense, Max Mara’s Fall/ Winter 2016 collection is all about the coat. The reintroduction of the Italian house’s legendary 101801 camel cashmere topcoat—a decadeslong emblem of swagger, Hollywood glam, and royalty— is a fitting gift from the brand to itself on its 65th birthday. (The coat’s other two available colors—ever-chic black and a lush, soft oatmeal—might rightly be considered Max Mara’s gift to us.) In another sense, though, the collection is all about an up-and-coming coterie of new shoppers. Youthful touches abound in punchy colors, stripes, and geometrics; goofy, textured coats worn with shiny gold; and white, yellow, and red high-heeled oxfords. But the brand’s trademark elegance is likewise apparent in six new styles from the Max Mara Tailored Suit Project Collection and matching skirts, trousers, or dresses in easy-peasy coordinating colors of blues, beiges, and grays, as well as eye-popping yellow, red, orange, and fuchsia. With both a loyal, longtime client base and a PYT gaggle of new fans, Max Mara’s creative director, Ian Griffiths, blends youthfulness and timeliness into one harmonious and elegant aesthetic.

Max-imum impact! Maria Giulia Maramotti (TOP RIGHT), director of retail for North America, has moved Max Mara in a fresher direction that was very much on display at the Fall 2016 show in Milan (REST OF PAGE).

Max Mara’s much coveted 101801 topcoat has continually inspired photographers. clockwise from here: Valery Katsuba’s Bolshoi Ballet–themed series from 2011; Roxanne Lowit’s portrait of Alba Clemente from the brand’s archives; Steven Meisel’s current campaign with Gigi Hadid; a shot from a 1994 series by Martine Barrat.

“Max Mara is a ‘warM’ brand—not a ‘hot’ brand. this is what Makes us so successful.”—maria giulia maramotti

While the company is known for keeping core customers happy with classic styles, Maria Giulia Maramotti, the granddaughter of the company’s founder, has brought a discerning eye to her role as director of retail for North America. Overseeing and strategizing the retail business for their 17 stateside boutiques, Maramotti has to make sure the collections are relevant. “With every new collection, the classic style will always be present, but given the contemporary climate, our collections are becoming more experimental and playful, which reenergizes the brand,” says Maramotti. “I like to think of Max Mara as a ‘warm’ brand—not a ‘hot’ brand—and I think this is what makes us so successful right now.” Part of this “warming” trend includes the choice of Gigi Hadid as the face of Max Mara’s latest accessories campaign, which introduced the JBag Shopper—a more contemporary bag than the elegant but structured Whitney bag, which debuted this spring on the first anniversary of New York City’s new Whitney Museum—and one that skews slouchy, rich, and young. Between the reintroduction of the 101801 coat, an emblematic symbol of its heritage, and the introduction of the JBag with Gigi, representative of their future, Max Mara organically continues to stay elegant but fresh. As Maramotti says, “For me, pairing the 101801 coat with tailored trousers and sneakers is a superchic and timeless look.” A match made in Max! WHO BELIEVES IN GUCCIGHOST? Imagine the scene: The word “real” is scrawled in yellow paint on a black Gucci bag. A red coat is emblazoned with two Gs back-to-back under a diamond rendering. If it looks as though a phantom street artist has passed through Gucci’s Fall 2016 collection with brush in hand, that’s because he has. Skateboarder/snowboarder-turnedartist/musician Trevor Andrew, aka GucciGhost, first came up with the idea behind his street-art persona three years ago, when he took a prized set of Gucci sheets and cut out eyeholes for a last-minute Halloween costume. Ever since, he’s adopted the house’s double-G logo and painted it all over New York—bathroom walls, trash cans, you name it. “I just thought it was dope,” says Andrew of the famed Italian fashion house. It wasn’t long before GucciGhost caught the attention of Gucci itself. Suddenly, Andrew found himself being flown to Rome to collaborate on the Fall 2016 collection with the label’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. “He never once told me what to do,” says Andrew. “He doesn’t operate out of fear.” The result is a collection with a decidedly street feel, including a logo midi skirt that brings to mind those “original” GucciGhost sheets. For Andrew, it feels like manifest destiny. “I felt it was going to come to Gucci’s attention,” he recalls. “That was my whole mission. I believed in it so much that I made it real.” The Forum Shops at Caesars, 702-3697333; gucci.com

FASHION FORWARD THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF FASHION SHOW MALL CELEBRATES THE LARGEST SHOPPING DESTINATION ON THE STRIP, AND EARLY DAYS THAT WERE STRICTLY “ONLY IN VEGAS.”

Time flies! Fashion Show’s entrance looks distinctly different from its 1981 opening— including this massive “flying saucer” landmark, added in 2003.

Since its opening in 1981, both locals and tourists have flocked to Fashion Show, which brought five top department stores under one roof for the first time in the city and opened as only a Vegas institution can. Terri Monsour, now senior VP of corporate retail for Caesars Entertainment, helped open Neiman Marcus as an assistant public relations associate in 1980. “In those days, the only luxury shopping was Joseph Magnin, next to the Desert Inn. Our population wasn’t even half a million, and along came Fashion Show and blew everyone away!” she recalls. It was the heyday of Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, and Escada, she describes, and well-heeled locals regarded it as a retail sanctuary. “Gloria Fine modeled hats at the opening on Valentine’s Day, 1981,” Monsour recollects. “And Stanley Marcus came to the opening, where [legendary publicist] KJ Howe mooned the governor!” she laughs. A bull imported from Dallas (Neiman Marcus headquarters) named Red River—for whom a men’s denim bar was named—greeted new shoppers from a pen at the store’s entrance. And, these being

the days in which retail was a perfect way to entertain gamblers’ bored significant others, “We actually accepted casino chips as currency. The guard would have to go to each casino to redeem them at the end of the day. I think we took the chips until at least 1990.” An early-day highlight included loading U-Haul trucks with fashion in multiples for sheiks filling their planes for the women back home. “I remember one early ad that featured a model getting out of a RollsRoyce in a giant fur, to show the glamour of the place,” Monsour shares, laughing. “Locals weren’t wearing them... It was too hot!” These days, a runway rises out of the floor at Fashion Show to accommodate shows by Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, which both expanded

their already large stores when the mall nearly doubled in size in 2002 to its current footprint of almost 2 million square feet (with more expansion still happening!). In many ways, the city can thank this seminal mall for the many branded boutiques in Las Vegas. After meeting with such success in Fashion Show’s department stores, brands like Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, David Yurman, Brioni and many others ventured out to the Strip. There is no other city with four Chanel boutiques and six Louis Vuitton boutiques in walking distance of each other —brands that were originally introduced via Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Hats off, Fashion Show, and here’s to another 35! thefashionshow.com

GALA SEASON MEANS STUNNING JEWELS WILL EVEN FURTHER BEDAZZLE GLAMOROUS LAS VEGAS NIGHTS. BY ALDOUS TUCK

Fall signals the return of red-carpet-ready “wow.” While the runway pieces seen on fashion arbiters about town get all the copy, it’s the gorgeous colored gems and deliciously decadent diamonds that set these looks aglow. Several key trends will be on display this season, including a clamor for bracelets; retro jewelry designs complementing thoroughly modern gowns; whimsical and romantic shapes from nature; and pieces incorporating the most sumptuous gems from the sea: pearls. Just ask any A-lister who sits in colorist Michael Boychuck’s chair at Color Salon at Caesars Palace if blondes have more fun. He might say that the so-called “Vegas blonde,” has the most. “The Boychuck Blonde is the Vegas Blonde,” he says. “That became my trademark after doing Paris Hilton, Josie Bissett, Baywatch beauties, and Kirsten Dunst.” His work has also been featured on four Playboy covers, but Boychuck is the go-to colorist for mere mortals as well. “If done correctly,” he swears, “blondes will always be the center of attention.” In August, he’ll turn more heads with the debut of his product line. “We are using plant stem cells and

cutting-edge elements to create a line that is totally original,” Boychuck says. He and partners Alfredo Andreani and Brad Sugars began developing sulfatefree shampoos, conditioners, and serums two years ago. “All three of us have been involved in every aspect of the process,” he says. “We’re following up with a full organic line, including a vitamin spray and mask, a leave-in spray, and cream to protect and repair locks. We’re super excited.” He’s counting on a devoted clientele for the lines’ citrusy and floral fragrance. After an exclusive stint at Caesars, they’ll do a worldwide launch. As scenes from A mArriAge go, it’s hard to top the opening moments of Billions for sheer eye-popping intensity. We don’t know it at first, but the man bound and gagged on the floor in the Showtime series premiere is actually wedded to the leather-bound dominatrix snuffing out a cigarette on his chest. The relationship only heats up from there. Paul Giamatti, 49, plays the guy with the burn hole, who also happens to be United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades. His wife, Wendy, portrayed in thigh-high footwear by Maggie Siff, 42, is more than just his partner in blowing off steam. She’s the in-house shrink and performance coach at Axe Capital, a massive hedge fund that pays her eight times more than her husband makes. Needless to say, Chuck cannot wait to expose Axe and its rakish billionaire CEO, played by Damian Lewis, as corrupt. What a relief that both Giamatti (Sideways, Downton Abbey) and Siff (Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men) are vastly more likeable in person than their deliciously despicable characters. The actors recently sat down with Vegas to talk about the show and the juicy themes it evokes: money, power, sex, greed, and, these days, how to dominate the not-so-small screen in Hollywood. Billions is being acclaimed as one of the best new shows on television, but Chuck and Wendy aren’t exactly easy to take. How do you explain their attraction? Paul Giamatti: They’re two incredibly smart people who are almost too well matched in some weird way. They both love power, they play off each other’s intensity, and they both hunger for success. We’ve dropped into their relationship near the end of something rather than the beginning, though I do think it was loving at one point. It’s a portrait of people hitting a bad spot in a marriage. How they’re going to work it out, I don’t know. But it is certainly a helluva lot of fun to play. Maggie Siff: They’re tough on each other but they’re also very honest. They can be their full selves in a way that’s completely uncensored and unguarded. People like to comment on the sexual element of their relationship as something very dark. But I see it as a testament to their connection. Somewhere along the line, it came up in conversation and they allowed it into the marriage. Behind the scenes, we talk about it being something that Chuck needs in his life, and that Wendy is like, Okay, I can do that. Don’t knock open, honest communication, right? In last season’s finale, Chuck breaks into Wendy’s computer, visits another dominatrix behind her back, and accuses Wendy of being an immoral criminal. Where are things when Billions returns in January? Siff: Season two picks up soon after we left off and you see them regrouping. Wendy’s not at Axe Capital anymore, which makes things complicated for her and Chuck personally and professionally. They’re trying to figure out what to do with themselves. It’s interesting playing a character this conflicted. Something I struggle with occasionally is wanting my characters to be maybe more heroic than they are. I don’t know if every actor struggles with that. I love Wendy and love that she’s so interested in helping people thrive and succeed. My question is always, why not help different kinds of people beyond the hedge fund guys? Can she examine her conscience and ask, “Why only help the super-rich?” Money is practically its own character on Billions—the $60 million beach house, the live-in chefs, the private helicopters. How has inhabiting this world altered your view of the 0.0001 percent? Giamatti: It freaks me out. I’m not going to condemn it, but I do find this level of extreme wealth to be strange and alienating. I’ve got no problem with living well, but you get to a place where enough is enough. In certain circles, though, more is more is more and it never ends. Money makes your

situation better, I’ll tell you that. But I personally don’t tend to spend much of it. I think that’s made my life a lot easier. I’m lucky as hell that I make a decent living, but I think I’m even luckier that I don’t have a taste for speedboats and tailored suits and mansions in the Hamptons. Siff: My feelings haven’t changed at all. I still think it’s bizarre and maybe even a little unhealthy to be rich enough to be a nation-state of your own. At least tell us you enjoyed driving Wendy’s Christmas bonus—the Maserati GranTurismo Sport Coupe, which retails for around $132,000. Siff: To be honest, it’s like getting on a thoroughbred for the first time. You’re like, Whoa! What is this? I only got to drive in a parking lot, unfortunately. And here’s the scary thing: Not only are you driving an extraordinarily expensive car, but they also strap on the most expensive camera equipment to the windshield and you’re barely able to see the road. What I’m saying is, it wasn’t the most romantic driving experience. Paul, you won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for playing John Adams in the 2008 TV miniseries of the same name. Which is the most cutthroat—Washington, Wall Street, or Hollywood? Giamatti: All three worlds have colorful characters and a high degree of ambition, backstabbing, and all that. I think the political and financial people tend to play things a little more low-key and hidden. That’s not to say you don’t have maverick characters who come up, like the guy who’s running for president. But Hollywood, I think, is the most out-there when it comes to flaunting success and spreading gossip and who’s got the biggest, you know, office. What’s your take on awards season? Giamatti: As an experience, awards ceremonies are truly exciting but also complete mayhem. I’m always amazed people don’t have epileptic seizures with the camera lights flashing in their eyes. If Billions wins an award now or in the future, that would be great, but honestly, the awards and the job we do are completely separate. You never, ever enter a scene thinking, Oh, this is my Emmy moment. You think, This is a great story, these are phenomenal actors I’m working with, and it’s just fantastic to be making a living in this profession. You get an award and you’re like, Wow, this is an amazing unexpected bonus. We’ve talked about success, but what are the worst jobs you’ve ever had? Siff: For about a month in my 20s, I worked at a hedge fund for real. A friend of mine was dating a guy who was a banker, and he gave me a temp job. I had no clue what I was doing. I would sit in front of these Bloomberg computer terminals and bullshit my way through the day so hard it was scary. And while there’s a high degree of glamour in the world of hedge funds we depict on the show, this was pretty basic: a lot less swag and a lot more khakis and plaid. Giamatti: I’ve done so much weird stuff as an actor. I once had to do an entire movie [the 2006 indie film The Hawk Is Dying] with a hawk strapped to my arm. I remember driving in the enclosed cab of a truck down a highway in Florida with the bird screaming out and its claws going after my face. That was way more dangerous than bringing down billionaires. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Siff: I take it easy. My husband and I live in New York, where I grew up, and we have a 2-year-old. I was pretty tired after the season and wanted to catch the last of my daughter’s babyhood. It’s going really, really fast. As far as guilty pleasures, I’m pretty nerdy. A night alone, I like to eat ice cream and watch BBC’s Call the Midwife. Giamatti: I’m embarrassed to admit that I never watch television. I know I’m missing out. But I love to read and see theater. I took my son to Hamilton, which was incredible, of course, and we got to meet the cast, who were weirdly excited to say hello because they wanted to meet another founding father. Okay, finally, what really happens during a sex scene? Siff: In general on the show, we do everything we can to lighten things up. Paul and I call each other Buck and Cindy, and our version of Cindy is spelled X-I-N-D-E-E. Damian loves singing show tunes around the set. When the cameras roll on the sex stuff, it’s all a total illusion. I’m standing there in six-inch stilettos attempting to look hot but desperately trying not to fall on my ass. Giamatti: For me, it’s interesting. Being tie d up made me really relaxed to the point where I kept falling asleep. At one point, Maggie had to use a low-voltage prod on me, which nobody knew how to operate. I’m falling asleep and she’s tickling me with the thing by really pressing it into me. But then she kinda runs it lightly from my navel up to my chest and it shocks the living hell out of me. After that, I was wide awake. She didn’t try it again.

As cofounder of one of the world’s most successful beauty brands, Moroccanoil’s Carmen Tal is a force of nature. Here, she reveals how creating a line of iconic hair, body, and sun products has evolved into a mission to inspire other women. by JIll SIer aCkI

an inspired life

well-traveled Carmen Tal (opposite page), cofounder of Moroccanoil, draws upon her travels around the world, including to the Beldi Country Club in Morocco (shown here), to fire her imagination for new products and ideas. The recently released fragrance Fleur de Rose was inspired by flowers Tal admired in France.

It started wIth just a basIc need—Carmen Tal, today the cofounder of Moroccanoil, was visiting relatives in Israel when a bad color process damaged her hair. Disappointed, she accompanied a friend to a salon in Tel Aviv, where a hairstylist used an oil treatment to both condition and style Tal’s hair. According to Tal, “The results were like, Wow!” Tal, a former salon owner herself who had also worked in the fashion industry, brought the product back home to Canada, where she started using it in her personal beauty regimen. She shared it with friends, colleagues, and her hairstylist. And as each reported the same impressive results—nourished, beautiful hair—she became convinced she had to distribute this oil on a larger stage. It took Tal six months to persuade her then husband, Ofer, a business executive who spoke Hebrew, that they needed to make this treatment oil their next venture. Initially, the couple started by just securing North American distribution rights, but when their success outpaced the company’s level of production, Tal bought the company outright and launched what is today the multimillion-dollar brand Moroccanoil.

Looking back, Tal admits it was no cake walk. “What we faced most was the negativity of people,” she says of those early days. “The thing for me was mostly people saying, ‘Don’t bring something with oil.’ ‘Don’t bring anything with glass because it’s going to break, it’s going to make a mess.’ Or, ‘Why do you do something with hair—that’s [a] saturated [category]?’ That was the challenge. We just said, ‘Okay, if we fail, we fail.’ You don’t always have a guarantee that things are going to be successful. But we were lucky.” “Lucky” might be the understatement of the century. The gamechanging success of Moroccanoil in an industry notorious for fickleness and fads could well be attributed to some luck, but the stunning growth and longevity of the brand is directly proportional to Tal’s tenacity, dedication, inspiration, and vision. Since the company launched less than a decade ago, Moroccanoil has ignited a passion (some would say obsession) in North America for argan oil, a rich elixir that’s harvested from kernels inside the fruit of Moroccan argan trees. In a labor-intensive process, Berber women crack open the argan nut to obtain the kernels, which are ground to extract the pure, unfiltered oil, which is then left to settle so any impurities sink to the bottom and can be removed. The resulting oil can be used for food (much the same way olive oil is) as well as a moisturizer for the face and hair. Argan oil is one of the main efficacious ingredients in the company’s cornerstone Moroccanoil Treatment and the signature ingredient across the entire product line, and spawned shelves of me-too merchandise. According to industry researcher Mintel, 29 products using argan oil launched in 2008; in 2012, it was 588. Meanwhile, researcher NPD Group has seen US department store sales of products featuring argan oil increase by more than 200 percent. “It actually doesn’t bother me anymore,” says Tal of the flood of argan oil products that fill shelves everywhere from high-end department stores to the local drugstore—even big-box stores like Costco. “Now I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place. No matter how many other products come out, we’re still going to be

“I’m so confident that being the first, being the pioneer, and continuing to bring products of the highest quality, nobody will ever take that place.” white, black, red—there wasn’t much diversity in the marketplace.” Since then, the company has grown exponentially, both in size and in scope, and is now available in over 65 countries and has also experienced tremendous growth in the travel retail/ duty-free category around the world. Tal relocated to New York (Moroccanoil also maintains offices in Montreal, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo), and they have expanded their offerings, from just the treatment oil—which found fans in celebrities such as Madonna, Emily Blunt, and Bar Refaeli—to a range of hair products, including a new texture collection featuring a Dry Texture Spray, made with a special blend of volcanic mineral zeolite and high-performance resins, as well as the unisex styler Texture Clay, which blends argan oil with cosmetic-grade bentonite clay and nourishing shea butter for a silky texture with shapeable hold. A surprising addition to the hair collection, Tal introduced spa-quality Moroccanoil Body skincare treatments, including an exfoliating body scrub—which features a unique blend of argan, sesame, grape seed, avocado, and sweet almond oils to nourish the skin—cleansing bar, shower milk, body butter, body soufflé, and hand cream. Says Tal, “The development of the Moroccanoil Body collection was a natural next step for us, as

we wanted to satisfy our consumer’s desire for luxurious treatments that not only transform the hair, but the body as well.” In 2015, two enticing and exotic fragrances were added: Fleur d’Oranger, a rich orange blossom scent that Tal says “is good enough to eat” and was inspired by her time in Spain; and Fleur de Rose, sparked by a garden of roses Tal spotted during a trip to France. The Moroccanoil Sun collection was launched the same year. “Argan oil is an incredible gift of nature, a natural sun protector, so it was an obvious choice for us to launch a Sun line,” says Tal. “We have always been inspired by the Mediterranean, and our Sun collection reminds me of when I was a teen, and going to the beach with my friends feeling happy and relaxed.” “I find that when I travel is when I have the time to discover, and I have the time to observe and see what else is happening,” she adds. “I’m not a creative person, but I know what I like. And then I interpret it in my own way.” Later this year, the company plans to announce its next generation of yet-to-be-revealed haircare products. “Trends are changing,” says Tal. “We try to come up with one or two big launches every year, or we formulate something—like [when] a new ingredient has come up in the market and we need to adjust—so we constantly are reinventing ourselves.” But most importantly for Tal is her holistic commitment to her customers. As well as inspiring women to look and feel their best, Tal is dedicated to helping them fulfill their personal potential and make their dreams a reality by empowering them to discover beauty in a new light—through the power of inspiration. With this at the forefront of her vision for her brand, and realizing the power of inspiration to move us to action, Moroccanoil announced its

the original. It’s not just about being an argan oilinfused brand; it’s much more than that. I think we are special.” At the time of Moroccanoil’s debut, it wasn’t just what was inside the bottle that was unique. The scent (a distinct and delicious aroma the company calls Fragrance Originale), the eye-catching apothecary-esque glass bottles, the elegantly designed labels—everything about Moroccanoil heralded something entirely new and different from anything available in the marketplace. Still, with only one product—the now iconic Moroccanoil Treatment—Tal needed to rely on grassroots marketing to get it into the right hands. Bottles were given away to hairdressers, stylists, influencers, and editors—anyone who could spread the word about what she believed was the new beauty essential. “It was very different than most of the beauty products of the time,” recalls Tal, noting the signature aqua and orange packaging, the blue culled from an image of an ocean seen in a fashion print ad. “Seven, eight years ago, most of the packages were

It only takes one moment of inspiration to ignite positive change.” The program’s first five honorees were highlighted in a digital short film series, directed by actress and filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard. Women featured in the series included trailblazers such as Rebecca Welsh, founder of The HALO organization, which helps homeless and at-risk youth heal and create a future through art therapy, and Allyson Ahlstrom, who provides cool clothes to kids in need across the country through her philanthropic Threads for Teens. “We’re extremely proud through Inspired By Women™ to feature powerful stories of passionate and courageous women who take confidence, compassion, and strength to a whole new level,” says Tal. “We hope their incredibly moving stories and accomplishments will serve as the catalyst that inspires all women to let go of their fears, take a chance, and realize their dreams. When you empower women, the sky’s the limit!” Most recently, the Inspired By Women™ program honored Marchesa designer and cofounder Georgina Chapman, who works with the organization The Magic Bus Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to lift communities in India out of poverty by providing education, sanitation, and mentoring efforts. It’s an organization close to Chapman’s heart as generations of her family have lived in India, and much of the artisanal embroidery and craftsmanship for which her designer gowns are known comes from these regions. Says Tal, “As we only just launched

As for the next film, we are looking towards a 2017 launch. It would be amazing, should the stars be aligned, to continue working with Bryce Dallas Howard. She has been such an integral part of the project, and is an extraordinary visionary and filmmaker, not to mention an incredibly inspiring woman herself!” “I always see us as goddesses,” continues the petite Tal, whose soft-spokenness belies her self-confidence and steely determination. “I think [women] should rule the world. We become mothers. And if we, as women, take seriously the responsibility of raising responsible human beings, this world would be a much better place. And by encouraging and empowering women to find themselves and teach them all these things, in 100 years we’ll have a much better place to live. People all over the world have been so moved by the stories of our Inspired By Women™ nominees. I think I’m most proud of the countless lives we have been able to touch through the initiative—and hopefully not only to inspire, but also empower other women to make their own dreams a reality.”

RAISING THE BAR PHILANTHROPY MEETS DRINKING MEETS ANTIQUES AT REBAR.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF GALE

BY LAURA JANELLE DOWNEY

After a bout with cancer, former Atomic Liquors co-owner Derek Stonebarger gained a new perspective. “It took the cancer to realize that there’s more to life,” he says. So the 40-year-old entrepreneur figured out a way to do some good, while combining his loves of antiques and the bar business, by opening ReBar in the Arts District. “People liked the historic stuff on the wall at Atomic, but we weren’t willing to sell it because we couldn’t replace it. That’s where the business model came from—an antiques store you can drink and shop in.” Tell us about ReBar’s charity angle. “We have five cocktails that raise money for local nonprofits. The Nevada Preservation Foundation’s drink is the Preservation Press. We’re serving John Mull’s sausages on Great Buns Bakery pretzel rolls [both are local businesses], with a portion donated to Three Square. You can help a lot of people when you have a business like a bar. There’s a lot of money to go around.” Why is ReBar’s interior so special? “Everything is custom built and we’ve used a lot of recycled material. The bar top is made from a hardwood that came out of a local casino.” What types of antiques do you sell? “We’ve got tons of cuckoo clocks, midcentury modern furniture, taxidermy, a 1960s console record player, McDonald’s plate holders from 1984, local artwork, and more!” 1225 S. Main St., 702-349-2283

Va va vintage! CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: ReBar’s bar is fully stocked and ready to rock; drinking in your own living room was never this cool; the backyard offers ample space to drink and shop; kitsch abounds, like this leg lamp reminiscent of A Christmas Story.

Your new boutique in Fashion Show is beautiful. Did the move from Forum Shops owe anything to the expansion at Fashion Show? Thank you! When I read the exciting news about the Fashion Show expansion I knew I wanted to be a part of it. Our Tadashi Shoji boutique is completely transformed

and fits right in the new high-end development. March Studio designed the space—and your home in Pasadena. Is there any design crossover? With the meticulous work that was done to design my home, I trusted March Studio to do the same with our Vegas boutique. The architectural firm had

already redesigned our South Coast Plaza store (in Orange County, California). With its large translucent glass louvers and giant plasma screens, March Studio captured the energy of our runway shows and translated the exact same mood to our Vegas store. I wanted the store to capture the glitz and

glamour of Las Vegas. I notice there are life-size video screens, and when I went inside I actually felt I was walking a runway! I’m so glad you felt that way! We wanted to create a completely new experience for the customer. As soon as you enter the boutique, oversized screens that play creative

“WHO DOESN’T WANT TO STRIKE A POSE ON A CATWALK?” –TADASHI SHOJI films tied to our collections greet you. Dark accented tiles were specifically arranged in a strip to suggest a runway. Combined with our gorgeous evening gowns and chic cocktail dresses, customers will be ready to grace the runway. And, really, who doesn’t want to strike a pose on a catwalk? Who is your Las Vegas client? Las Vegas is such an energetic and sexy city. Our new Vegas boutique caters to our young Tadashi Shoji customers who are not afraid to show skin and be more stylishly daring. Dramatic gowns and cocktail dresses with plunging necklines in vibrant colors are just some of the bold, glamorous choices. What are your favorite design elements in the store? The exterior of the boutique features an

illuminating design effect that’s really eye-catching. As customers walk on our imagined catwalk, they can’t miss the mirrored, pleated structure placed right in the center of the store. This is our unique dressing room, filled with hot pink furniture accents. A curved wall showcases our clutches. You also can’t miss our adorable kids’ line located against the curved wall. The store windows are really theatrical. Are they an indication of future displays? Moving forward, each of our new retail stores will capture the feelings of wonder and awe within an imaginative setting. Theatrical window displays are just one part of my vision. SPACE LIVING WELL

SERENITY NOW

To celebrate Red Rock Resort’s 10th birthday in April, the Fertitta family invested $40 million in the west-side resort, debuting new restaurants, updating the sports book, and transforming the 25,000-square-foot spa into a one-of-a-kind wellness center. The new Spa at Red Rock by Well & Being, which revealed its makeover in the summer, is now a sanctuary inspired by mid-century California design with an outdoor “shower garden,” a co-ed lounge, and a “mind-body studio” with floor-to-ceiling windows. The menu has also been totally reimagined: Think personalized programming, like facials created by Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer (whose clients include Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian) and the NASA-developed Bod Pod, a diagnostic device that delivers full body composition measurements. Follow that up with a workout consultation or nutritional advising—perhaps a cooking class in the demo kitchen—or something more daring, like working on your warrior pose suspended from the wall in a vertical yoga class. Spa Managing Director Stephanie Doud envisions the resort becoming the Miraval of Vegas, and drawing customers from the tourist corridor: “The fact that we’re so close to nature means it’s a much more relaxing experience than down on the Strip. We can coordinate hiking, we can do morning yoga up in Red Rock Canyon.” Casino aside, it’s the natural choice! redrock.sclv.com

HigH-end realtors keep some of tHeir most fabulous pentHouses in las Vegas a secret. Here’s How to find tHem. By Andy WAng

Panda Express billionaire Andrew Cherng looks perplexed when I walk toward him in the lobby lounge of The Residences at Mandarin Oriental. But I’m not here to suggest a different recipe for Pacific chili shrimp. No, I’m here to see Kamran Zand (luxury estates.com), the real estate

broker Cherng is talking to this Saturday morning. It’s no surprise that Cherng, who already has a unit at the Mandarin and might be on the hunt for more, is talking to Zand. The broker, who himself lives at the Mandarin, literally holds the keys to some of the most coveted and

on-the-down-low listings in Las Vegas. Zand takes me up to see unit 4503, a tricked-out Penthouse Collection unit once under contract by movie/casino megamogul Kirk Kerkorian. Zand’s plan was to put the 3,980-square-foot condo on the market for $7 million, but he found a

local buyer from his high-net-worth database of potential clients without even listing it. The sale, he says, “was the highest price-per-squarefoot ever for a resale highrise condo in Las Vegas.” It’s easy to see the appeal for the buyer, who Zand says is downsizing from a mansion and

wants the best in full-service buildings. A secret door, hidden behind mirrors, connects the living room and bedrooms. There are rooms finished in Neolith, a surface that’s scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, stain-resistant and waterproof. A wall of six televisions is controlled by smart-home technology. Automated Kohler toilets, ultra-deep closet shelves and a striking red, selfplaying Pramberger piano are other superlatives. Views of the nearby T-Mobile Arena, soon home to Las Vegas’s only major-league sports franchise, is a huge selling point for hockey fans and ballers of all kinds. A typical evening for broker Shari Sanderson (lasvegascondomania.com), whose recent sales with business partner Michelle Manley at the Mandarin include a $4.1 million 43rd-floor unit and a $4.1 million 47th-floor penthouse, is meeting clients at their apartment and strolling with them to Carbone for dinner. “It’s a social club,” Sanderson says. It’s a club you want to be in if you’d like to find out about listings that don’t officially hit the market, like the 47th-floor Mandarin penthouse that Manley recently sold for $2.59 million. They also have a wraparound gray shell penthouse in The Martin, which, at just under 5,000 square feet and selling at $390 a square foot, is one of the best deals going right now. Most

penthouses are sold gray shell—a blank canvas for the owner to customize, Sanderson explains. But she and Manley have sold most of them—including 35 penthouses in two weeks in 2013—and they’re not even promoting some of their penthouses. “It’s kind of an in-crowd thing to find out what we actually have,” Sanderson explains. If you want to get on these realtors’ radars, it helps if you already own a high-end property and want some insight on what it’s worth and how best to quietly sell it. The concierges and VIP hosts who help with sold-out show tickets and private-jet bookings might also have a top real estate broker on their frequently dialed numbers. If all else fails, there are some stunning properties that are publicly listed, like a $2.99 million, 31st-floor Mandarin unit Sanderson recently put on the market. In nearby Veer Towers, Pordes Residential (pordesresidential.com) has its final penthouse on the market for $1.9 million. There’s little in the pipeline to compete with them. “Even if somebody decided to build a condo, it would take years for planning and development and construction,” says Darwin Dizon, the Veer sales director for Pordes Residential. “There’s no space really. Maybe if somebody took down a hotel, but I can’t imagine that.” So what’s already in the sky is the limit. Finding it is the game.

SpaCe the guide Station CaSinoS Some have a midlife crisis to celebrate their 40th. Station Casinos went public and bought The Palms (shown)! Forty years ago, gaming visionary Frank Fertitta Jr. decided to create an off-Strip gaming and entertainment establishment for locals, and opened The Casino, a 5,000-square-foot venue on Sahara Avenue with 100 slot machines and a snack bar. This brilliant idea served as a game changer for the community, and Station Casinos was born. When Fertitta Jr. retired in 1993, he passed the poker chip to his children, Frank Fertitta III (chairman and CEO) and Lorenzo Fertitta (vice chairman and president), and the two have since grown the 20-property company into a billion-dollar business. Now thanks to Station Casinos returning to NASDAQ as a publicly-traded company, coupled with the recent $312 million acquisition of Palms Casino Resort, this family-owned casino empire just continues to expand. sclv.com

LIVING LAS VEGAS

I GOT HIGH ON YOGA

For someone with a pathological fear of heights, doing a downwardfacing anything from 550 feet seems, you know, wrong. Think of other things that are the approximate height of the Linq’s High Roller: the Washington Monument, the Seattle Space Needle—neither of which I have any desire to stand atop in Lululemons contorting myself. But then I saw this picture of Giada De Laurentiis, bestowing her gentle blessing on the entire Vegas valley from the wheel’s apex. This summer, the High Roller inked a deal with Silent Savasana to offer yoga on high, with a live instructor and music through a headset, filtering out ambient noise–and perhaps, your fear of falling. The hour-long session promised to leave me “soothed,” and “focused.” What Would Giada Do? I signed on. As we ascended, resting on our mats to the gentle vibrations and a great soundtrack, my internal monologue went something like: “Can Giada see into her kitchen from here?” and “How much higher am I than Venetian’s campanile?” (Answer: 235 feet.) But then the hushed voice of our instructor broke through: “Stop thinking so much.” I did, and a magical thing happened: No vertigo, just peaceful hovering over the best view of Vegas I’d ever had. Emboldened, I soared into shoulder pose and dived into downward dog, and felt just as Zenned out as Giada looked, if sweatier, and with less awesome hair. And I emerged, yes, soothed and focused. caesars.com/linq/high-roller.

Giada De Laurentiis was clearly so relaxed on her yoga journey on the High Roller, she didn’t even know her picture was being taken.
