a meditation on tradition

I used to think traditions were chains. Something imposed on the family to keep our milestones locked in someone else’s vision. But as I have grown older (maybe wiser?) and my life changes, I have realized that traditions are not chains, they are threads that tie us together with our loved ones.

the gift edit

each member of the Elsie Green team has beautiful taste. And each is an avid elsie green shopper. This year, we’re giving you an inside peek into the special things our shop girls (and boys) are planning to give their favorite people. Of course, some are from the shop. But there are still a few surprises from our secret sources. visittheblogtoreadmore>

JP JP really loves our vintage copper. And when he gifts a gift, he likes to share a special piece with a special person. Sometimes it’s polished and re-tinned, sometimes it’s burnished with age. He likes to choose just the perfect pot or vessel that he knows will thrill its new owner. shopjp’stop10 favoritegiftstogive> visittheblogtoreadmore>

Terri

terri believes in simplicity. when she needs a hostess gift, she selects a pair of hand made, long-burning beeswax tapers. For a gift that will wow its recipient, she wraps up a box of a dozen.

Joey looks for high quality, functional gifts that stand the test of time. Like our beautiful vintage bar glasses, or vintage bread boards. each piece made special by its markings of time and use.

atelier rae

Every day is different at Elsie Green. And some of our favorite days are when we are invited into a beautiful home to scout for a photo shoot or to consult on a design project. That happened recently when we were meeting with artist Rae Dunn in her home and she invited us next door to take a peek at her atelier.

small pleasures

from our time in france, we’ve learned to enjoy the small pleasures of a meal : good bread, fresh ingredients, candle light, and good conversation. The best meals have come together with a slow, easy pace and have lasted for hours.

If you celebrate Christmas, then the ritual of acquiring the tree is most likely the centerpiece of your holiday tradition. Choosing the lot, choosing the tree and arranging a special day and time to decorate it are all activities that evoke memories of seasons past and excitement for the current year’s adventure. For the shop, we prefer a tall Charlie Brown tree buried in lights and wrapped in a vintage linen sheet at the base. et c’est finis. visittheblogtoreadmore>

collectors at heart

think the secret to creating a good collection is not just in amassing something in volume, but in collecting individual pieces you appreciate for their unique qualities. visit the blog to readmore>

a splash of soul

Of course your big white platters and fancy stemware are essential to making your table work, but we think integrating some of your own treasures is what makes it sing. visittheblogtoreadmore>

On our most recent shopping trip for Elsie Green, we detoured to one of our favorite European cities and had a 72 hour reunion with our long lost love, Paris. It felt so good to explore a city that feels simultaneously familiar and veiled with a bit of mystery. visittheblogtoreadmore>

local flavor “Use your kitchen as a hermitage to nourish your loved ones. Place your hands on living, fresh ingredients. Always be thankful that you even have a sliver of time to spend in the kitchen.” this bit of Advice from local chef griffin wilson makes our hearts sing. we also love his philosophy on butter: “if a recipe calls for butter, always add more.” visittheblogtoreadmore>

Winter fashion is all about cozy layers and comfy knits by day, and a bit of party sparkle by night. This year we’re loving coats that feel like blankets and holiday party looks inspired by Alexa Chung. visittheblogtoreadmore>

salut

We love New Year’s Eve. It represents for us a moment to celebrate being alive. And it’s a precursor to a re-birth when we turn our focus the next day to our resolutions. Whether we choose to imbibe on New Year’s Eve or not, the night feels filled with champagne bubbles and possibilities. visittheblogtoreadmore>
