What are algae?

Algae are tiny living things that live in water, such as in rivers and in the sea. They can grow very quickly. There are lots of different types of algae. They can be very small and you sometimes need a microscope to see them.

Fuel

As living things, they need air and sunlight to make their food. Algae make the air cleaner because they take in pollution. You can use algae to make fertiliser*, foods, fuel and face creams. *fertiliser is a thing that makes plants grow faster

1. Add algae

DO NOT Drink the Algae

Put the starter algae into the recycled bottle. We will only need a little because the algae will grow.

2. Add rainwater School / Tinsley Forum

DO NOT Drink the algae

Add rainwater to the starter algae. Fill up the bottle to the line.

3. Shake

Place the cap back onto the bottle and tighten. Shake the bottle with the cap on to mix the algae starter and the rainwater.

4. Add colour chart

Place the colour chart sticker on the bottle. Remove the cap from the bottle.

5. Leave in sunlight

DO NOT Drink the Algae

Place the bottle in an area with lots of sunlight, this is required for the algae to grow.

6. Shake every day School / Tinsley Forum

DO NOT Drink the algae

Every morning and afternoon shake the bottle with the cap on to mix the Top tightly Tip! Try adding a light addedoff growth algae. Remember to take the forcap when it’s dark afterwards.

7. Watch it grow

Watch the algae grow! The liquid will become a darker green as more algae grow. Check its progress against the colour chart.

8. Add to tank

After two weeks, the algae have grown as much as possible in the small bottle. They need more space! Your algae will be added to a big tank so that it can grow more.

Each day make a mark on the green that you can see in your algae bottle. Watch it grow as it becomes a darker green! The green becomes darker because algae grow by multiplying. There will be much more algae in the bottle at the end of the two weeks.
