Holly Cole is going to find a way to leave you floored. If it isn’t through her sensual, intense stage presence, it’ll surely be her dulcet, smoky and unmistakably jazzy voice. While she is often labeled a jazz musician, the Halifax-born chanteuse has spent much of her nearly 30-year career proving herself to be a wide-ranging musical talent who can navigate her way through country, R&B and pop stylings. Her latest album, Night, stays true to this love of variety, covering another array of skilled performers (Tom Waits and Gordon Lightfoot, among them) while even including a James Bond theme, You Only Live Twice. THE ONCE Friday, December 13, 8:00 pm Named for a unique Newfoundland phrase that means ‘imminently’, now is indeed the time for The Once. From their beginnings as three actors who also loved to sing together, The Once has embraced a different vision of Newfoundland music. Their sounds do not come from the noisy pubs and dockside taverns that fuel so much of the island’s energy. Instead, their music comes from a quieter and more thoughtful place.

“We are not stand-up comedians. Our show is not a passive, sitback-and-watch experience. Most of the fun we have on stage comes from our inclusion of the audience – we get suggestions from them to begin each scene we perform, and in certain instances, bring them on-stage with us to add to our performance. It’s less a ‘show’ and more a party. At least it feels like one to me. This group of actors brings me right back to how I started out in comedy – maybe that's why we have so much fun doing it.” ~ JIM BELUSHI

MISS CALEDONIA Written & performed by Melody Johnson Saturday, October 5, 8:30 pm in The Studio Theatre Desperate to escape the stall-cleaning, hay-baling drudgery of 1950’s life on Rural Route 2, Peggy Ann Douglas dreams of becoming a movie star. Can she sing, twirl and pivot her way into the hearts of the pageant judges to set her on her path? The multi-talented Melody Johnson has quickly established a sterling reputation in theatre circles, both as an actor and a writer, winning a 2003 Dora Award for her performance in Little Mercy’s First Murder and premiering her musical Mimi in 2009.
