Can you help? The Bird wants to connect with his good friend the Emperor! START
FINISH
Some ways to help you be a good friend... Talk - about things like what's going on and shared interests - so that you have lots to talk about. Share the conversation, so that you each get a chance to be a listener and a talker. Listen to what your friends are saying and ask questions about it. Praise your friends when they do something well. Use your manners - say please and thank you. Friends like to be pleasant to each other. Think of yourself as being a friendly person, look friendly and be friendly - and others will find you friendly. Be helpful - do things for your friends without keeping a score on who's done the most favours. Give back things you have used or borrowed from each other (this is a good idea for siblings too). Be aware of others’ feelings - think before you speak. (Sometimes it is a good idea to keep your thoughts to yourself rather than upset people's feelings.) Handle conflict - by being clear about what you want and how you will compromise. Share your time with other friends. Try to understand people by thinking about things from their point of view. Don't argue and get upset if your friend doesn't agree with you about something. That's O.K. they have the right to an opinion too! 6

THE NIGHTINGALE Sunday October 6th at 1:00 & 3:30pm Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre Rag And Bone Puppet Theatre • Recommended for ages 5 to 15
Ancient China was the most beautiful place in the world – and the most beautiful thing in it was the song of the Nightingale in the forest by the sea. When the Emperor heard the Nightingale sing, her song brought tears to his eyes. He ordered a gold cage for her, so that she could live at court from now on. Soon the Nightingale was all anyone ever talked about. One day, a present arrived for the Emperor, a gift from the Emperor of Japan. It was an artificial nightingale that turned around and even played a little tune. The people at court were so thrilled with it that they hardly noticed when the real one flew away, back to her own green woods. Everyone agreed that the artificial bird was better anyway. They played it over and over again until one day it broke. It was almost worn out, and from then on it could only be played once a year. Years later, the Emperor was dying. He lay in bed, all alone, haunted by the memories of all his
good deeds and all his bad deeds. Death hovered, ready to take the Emperor away. Suddenly, at the window, the real Nightingale began to sing. Her song chased away the Emperor’s fears, and brought him strength. Death was filled with a longing for his garden, his home. He changed into a cold white mist and floated out the window. “You saved my life,” said the Emperor. “Take my gold cape.” “I don’t want a reward,” answered the Nightingale. “I want to be your friend.” In the morning the servants tiptoed in, expecting to see their dead Emperor’s body, but there he was, all better. Healthy and happy, he called out to them: “Good Morning!” This is Rag & Bone Theatre’s most popular show. It’s good for the whole family: exotic music, colourful puppets, and a great story. The story emphasizes friendship, inclusion, empathy, leadership, kindness and caring. 7

Make an ALL ABOUT ME! Book In the story of Freckleface Strawberry, you meet a little girl who’s different . . . just like everybody else . . . just like you! Why not create your own book that is ALL ABOUT YOU? Decorate the book in any way you like. We would suggest that you draw or tape a picture of yourself to the front cover page and put your name and date on it. Then on the first inside page talk about yourself physically, for example what colour your eyes are, what colour is your hair, short or long, and so on. On the following pages we suggest you have at least one page for each of the five senses. Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. For example, you can talk about what you love to look at and either draw them or tape pictures into your book. Example: I love the taste of chocolate ice cream. The activity below will help give you ideas for your book. You may need some help putting all of the pages together to form a book. One suggestion is to punch a hole with a hole puncher (with help from an adult) and tie a ribbon or string threw it to make a bow. Be creative, make it your own, remember this book is for you to learn more about yourself. Have fun! Tuck the book away somewhere special so that you can read it years down the road! 12

Try your hand at a cool Coin Trick In this trick, you’ll need the help of a discreet assistant, practice together, and get ready to WOW the crowd. Remember, a magician never reveals their secrets. Here’s what you'll need to get started 4 coins (a penny, hopefully you still have one, nickel, dime, and quarter) Mug or cup with handle HERE’S HOW IT WORKS Ask someone to choose 1 of the 4 coins while your back is turned. Have your trusty assistant cover the selected coin with a coffee mug (upside down) and remove the other 3. Now you turn around and announce what the covered coin is. IT’S MAGIC! WHAT’S THE SECRET? Ahead of time, instruct your assistant to place the mug so that its handle indicates the coin underneath. For example if it's a penny your assistant would face the handle at 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock for a nickel, 6 o’clock for a dime, and 9 o’clock if it's a quarter. Just make sure you both agree which way the “clock” is facing!
The magician got so mad he pulled his hare out.

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR and Other Eric Carle Favourites Sunday January 5th at 1:00 & 3:30pm Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia • Recommended for ages 3 to 7 Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s award-winning performances feature Jim Morrow’s spectacular black light puppetry and brings to life three of Eric Carle’s classic and timeless stories. These stories enchant and delight both young and old as the animal characters discover how change is a necessary part of understanding who you are. This stunning production includes the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly; the fanciful account of Little Cloud’s travels through the sky; and The Mixed-Up Chameleon’s discovery of his own unique nature. The whimsical tales have enchanted several generations, and Mermaid’s acclaimed stage adaptation teaches as well as entertains. The work closely follows the books from which they are adapted, providing a new generation with a seamless entry into the world of live theatre and music.
Founded in 1972 in Wolfville, NS, Mermaid Theatre has recently celebrated their 40th season of continuous operation. In 1987, they moved to the neighbouring town of Windsor, and helped to revitalize the historic town’s downtown business core. Their extensive headquarters includes production studios, administrative offices, rehearsal quarters, a versatile studio, and an elegant 400-seat performance facility known as The Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre (MIPAC). The universally enthusiastic response to their innovative family audiences programming has enabled them to establish unparalleled touring circuits. Each year they present more than 400 performances for 200,000 spectators – many of them new to the theatre experience. Their contributions to the local economy as well as their role as cultural ambassadors for Nova Scotia and for Canada have merited Export Excellence awards from both the Governments of Canada and of Nova Scotia.

ROCK (Reach Out Centre for Kids) is Halton Region’s largest accredited children’s mental health organization serving infants, children, youth and their families. With programs geared towards prevention, assessment, early intervention and crisis situations, ROCK is a leader in providing mental health services using a unique, multi-disciplinary approach. Our staff consists of social workers, psychologists, child and youth workers, occupational therapists and psychometrists who collaborate to provide holistic care, treating clients in the context of their lives. One of ROCK’s most successful programs is our Youth Aiding Youth program. YAY allows us to provide prevention and early intervention strategies for kids who are at risk of developing further mental health issues. A peer mentoring program, YAY matches at-risk children ages six to twelve with a youth mentor ages 16 to 24.
The goals for the Youth Aiding Youth program are to develop social skills and increase selfesteem. Matches engage in recreational activities, such as games, crafts, sports and other ventures that promote coping skills, facilitate friendship and provide opportunities to engage in positive social interactions. This program promotes growth and development working by the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Youth Aiding Youth is really a “win-win” program. The child benefits greatly from the special relationship that is developed with the youth volunteer, and the youth mentor also benefits by gaining first-hand experience in the social services, helping to build experience in the mental health field, and promoting awareness of strategies that can work to address at-risk behaviour in children. This experience is invaluable for youth and young adults pursuing a career in the social sciences. If you are interested in becoming a mentor with Youth Aiding Youth, or would like more information about ROCK Reach Out Centre for Kids, contact Lauren Chomski today at laurenc@rockonline.ca or 905-634-2347 ext. 269.

OAKVILLE NISSAN presents
PINOCCHIO Tuesday April 1st at 7:00pm Theatre Tout à Trac Recommended for ages 6 to 10 Montreal-based theatre company Theatre Tout à Trac uses state-of-the-art puppets in their telling of the classic children's tale about a wooden marionette who longs to become a real boy. To do so, he will have to face Mangiafuoco, the terrible Puppet Master, suffer the malice of Mr. Fox and his sidekick, the Cat, and escape from Toyland to save his father from the belly of the giant fish! The age-old fairytale is told in a folkloric style and includes all of the tale's beloved characters - puppet master Geppeto, the sly fox and, of course, Jiminy Cricket. The puppets have been carefully hand-carved out of wood and hold true to the story's descriptions, right down to Pinocchio's evergrowing nose! Tout a Trac's Pinocchio is a lavish and extravagant re-telling of the classic tale of fatherly love, boyhood antics and the unending yearning to be "real". The elegant costumes, the sophisticated sets and the impeccable acting will ensure audiences feel the sawdust of the Geppetto 's workshop, the sense the trepidation of meeting the Puppet Master, Mangiafuoco, and the joy of Cricket's friendship.
“Every detail is artfully executed in this disarming retelling of a classic tale.” ~ Montreal Gazette

Make your own Pinocchio Nose ! In the story of Pinocchio, his nose grows when he tells a lie and shrinks when he tells the truth. His nose grows so long that it starts to interfere in things he wants to do. He quickly learns that it's not good to lie. You will have a great time making it grow and shrink.
1
Decorate the construction paper first. It will add fun to the project and it will give you a chance to learn about the story and the idea behind the nose growing.
2
Roll the sheets vertical-wise, once finished decorating each sheet of construction paper. However, roll the first sheet looser than the second one and roll the second one looser than the third one. That way they fit into each other. You don't want them fitting too loosely into each other, you want it to stick a little when you pull each one out. Secure each roll with tape, that way you can unroll if needed.
3
Pull each one out so that they are still connected but you have a long "nose." You don't want the nose to be that long, so cut off the end of each one until it's as long as you want it to be.
4
Place Velcro on each end of the rolls. Place the rolls inside of each other again and place them back and forth. The Velcro will help each roll from not coming completely out when you make the nose "grow."
5
Make a small hole with a pen on the side that your nose will be, insert the string into it, and tie to secure it. Bring the string around your head for measuring. Then make another small hole on the other side of the role to insert the other end of the string and make a knot. 28

Their world-class 26,000 sq. ft. facility features 3 modern Training Halls, a 12,000 sq. ft. heated indoor Agility Arena, a fully stocked store offering the latest in dog training products and a large outdoor exercise area, all situated on a beautiful 7 acre country setting. “Our Training Halls are climate and sound controlled, and provide plenty of space for the entire family to enjoy training from a spacious viewing area,” boasts Marti, “and our indoor Agility Arena has premium sportfield surfacing, plenty of natural light and is fully heated for year round training.” Classes offered Monday to Saturday – mornings, afternoons and evenings. The weekly lessons last 4, 8, or 9 weeks (depending on the level) and new sessions start each month, all year round. “We train all breeds and all ages, but most importantly, we train people,” says Deb. “Our Head Start class, for puppies 10-16 weeks, prevents problems before they start. Our Grade 1 class teaches you how to gain control over your dog in a positive training environment. And our Grades 2, 3 and 4 classes will develop an all-round, versatile canine companion who is a pleasure to own! The dogs learn jumping, retrieving, advanced hand signals, and complete off-leash and distance control.”
“These advanced family dog programs develop allround versatile companions.” says Deb. “But before any advanced training can take place, your puppy will need to learn the basics!” “Head Start is our unique 4 week course for puppies 10 to 16 weeks of age. This class ensures that your puppy develops a positive attitude towards learning and becomes a friendly adult dog. All family members are welcome to participate. Each lesson lasts 1.5 hours and includes a question and answer period.” Deb explains, “We teach you to teach your puppy how to stop nipping or biting your family and friends, come to you even when playing with toys, and even ask to go outside to relieve itself – on command!” “After completing this class, your puppy will stop chewing your things, learn to play games that last a lifetime, and not be possessive of its toys or food.” Their Grade 1 class is for dogs 4 months of age & older. You don’t have to take the Head Start class to enrol into Grade 1, but it is highly recommended, and you even receive a discount. “Grade 1 is our obedience training class that enables the dog owner to gain control over the family dog. This 9 week course has a total class time of 14.5 hours. Most lessons last 1.5 hours and include a question and answer period. All family members are welcome to attend,” explains Marti. “In this class your dog will learn to come the first time every time, sit while greeting guests and not jump up, sit and stay even when distracted, lie down and stay as long as 30 minutes, walk on a leash happily without pulling you and play and then settle down on command.” Marti and Deb McCann and their staff are passionate about dog training and are adament that any dog can learn The McCann Method™. Phone or come to see them to find out when the next class is starting. They will happily answer any of your questions.

BURLINGTON “All the books in the world (and I have them all!) cannot take the place of the one-on-one feedback at McCann Dog Trainers. This is my second dog being trained here and if we had a third it would also come here.” HAMILTON “This is my third dog that I’ve trained at McCann Dog Trainers and I am as impressed now as I was back then.” KITCHENER “The staff’s availability to answer problems or questions on the phone or in person was exceptional.” MILTON “I have been to other obedience schools that were not nearly as effective. We noticed an improvement in our dog after just one class!” MISSISSAUGA “I have made great strides with my dog since being enrolled in this class.” OAKVILLE “I love the fact that there are so many instructors in each class to give feedback and individual attention. I receive many compliments on how well my dog behaves, especially for such a big dog.” STONEY CREEK “We would never have believed our dog could learn so much so quickly.” WATERLOO “The drive was definitely worth it from Waterloo. Money well spent!”
