PINKALICIOUS, The Musical Sunday, October 21st at 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 pm Recommended for ages 2 to 10 Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe - a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament Lower Ossington Theatre is a community of artists who believe that a shared theatrical experience profoundly affects people’s lives. We create stories that challenge our audience to ask questions, make discoveries, and engage in dialogue. If one adult is inspired, if one child’s imagination is awakened, if one student is empowered, our theatre is important. Pinkalicious, The Musical, now in its sixth smash year, was commissioned by Vital Theatre Company and presented at its home theatre in New York City in January 2007. It moved Off-Broadway to Soho Playhouse in March of 2007. In January 2008, the production opened at New World Stages, and then went on to enjoy an extended run Off-Broadway at the Bleecker Street Theatre in New York City. The Richmond Hill Centre production of Pinkalicious, The Musical in 2009 marked the show’s first production outside of the United States. The show has since been extended twice in different theatres and has been running for a recordbreaking three years in Toronto, where it now lives at the Lower Ossington Theatre.

HANSEL AND GRETEL Sunday, November 25th at 2:00 pm Canadian Opera Company • Recommended for ages 6 to 12

This famous Grimm fable of two brave children will enchant and entertain young audiences. The story of Hansel and Gretel, the witch, the soothing Sandman and the magical gingerbread house is retold through beautiful melodies from Engelbert Humperdinck’s well known opera of the same name. The Canadian Opera Company is pleased to present their production of Hansel and Gretel, a child-friendly adaptation of the original full-length opera, based on the classic fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Sung in English, this tour version of Hansel and Gretel contains amusing characters and enchanting music that will have young audiences spellbound. Written by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck in 1890, Hansel and Gretel was last performed as part of the school tour in 2006. Widely known for its timeless appeal to audiences young and old, the operatic version of this beloved fairytale is noted for its enchanting score, much of it inspired by European folk music. For more than 30 years the COC’s renowned school tour has brought opera to local schools and communities across Ontario, in the last four years adding northern Ontario to the list of destinations with performances in Sudbury and Timmins. In 2010, the tour travelled further north than ever before to the Inuit communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq in the Nunavik region of northern Québec. In 2011 Xstrata Ensemble Studio began touring elementary schools across Ontario with Isis and the Seven Scorpions, by Dean Burry, and Hansel and Gretel, by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Optical illusion What are illusions? Illusions trick us into perceiving something differently than it actually exists. Don’t hurt your eyes and stare too long!

Twix!

Try your hands at a Coin Trick Effect: The magician shows a glass, upside down, and a coin on a sheet of coloured paper. He puts a handkerchief over the glass and moves it over. He pulls the handkerchief off and Abracadabra! the coin has disappeared.

Supplies: A sheet of construction paper, a clear glass, a handkerchief and a coin.

Preparation: Trace the glass onto the sheet of paper and cut the circle out. Then tape it to the glass so when you put it onto a piece of paper the same colour it blends in.

Secret: When you do the above put the glass onto a piece of paper and just basically move the paper covered glass over the coin while the whole thing is under the handkerchief so the glass covers the coin. Pull off the handkerchief. The coin will have "disappeared”.

What you will need (with help from an adult): White flour -1 cup Salt - 1/2 cup Cream of tartar - 2 tablespoons Oil - 1 tablespoon

Water - 1 cup Food colouring Optional Scents - Essential Oils/Extracts Optional Glitter/Sparkles

Mix first 4 ingredients (flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil) in a pan. Add water and mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 3 – 5 minutes. Dough will become difficult to stir and form a “clump”. You’ll know it’s ready when you won’t be able to stir it anymore! BOO!

Sunday, April 7th at 2:00 pm Sursaut Dance Company • Recommended for ages 4 to 12 BOO! is a series of dance, mime, clown and circus vignettes that brings forth wonder and smiles in a world where the poetry of the body is at the fore. Sursaut is devoted to the creation of dance productions that are magical for young and family audiences. Founded in 1985, the Sursaut Dance Company is devoted to the creation, production and dissemination of dance shows for young and family audiences. The company’s productions are presented from coast to coast in Canada as well as outside the country. Sursaut’s joyful and touching creations thrill spectators young and old alike, everywhere they are presented. Since 1987, Francine Châteauvert has assumed the roles of artistic director and choreographer. From the beginning, she has worked in close collaboration with Adam Dymburt, dancer and general manager, to develop the company and to ensure the dissem-

ination of its works. They work with a team of committed dancers and collaborators. Francine Châteauvert made her first forays in the art of movement in artistic gymnastics before plunging into the world of dance. Her background also includes work in theatre and circus arts. Decidedly contemporary, her creations are imprinted with authenticity and freshness, offering performances imbued with a poetic realism in a highly physical choreographic style. The depth, beauty and happiness, great and small, that are found in the simplest things and in the seemingly innocuous moments of everyday life, are transmitted through her works.
