PIONEER FAMILY POOLS presents

IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR Led Zeppelin • CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE • Thursday, January 19h at 8:00pm It’s easy to see why In Through The Out Door is so panned by fans and critics alike, as it’s not your typical Led Zeppelin record. The album finds the band eschewing their folk-infused blues rock sound and exploring genres as diverse as pop, prog, punk, electronica, Latin, and even country. The reasons for Led Zeppelin’s drastic change in sound came largely out of necessity. With Jimmy Page and John Bonham battling severe drug addiction, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant were forced to take helm of songwriting for the first time in the band’s history. Led Zeppelin also found themselves increasingly irrelevant in the wake of punk, disco, and new wave. The album’s title reflects the band’s frustration in trying to re-enter the public consciousness. While the album did indeed renew interest in the Mighty Zep, and soared to #1 on the Billboard charts within two weeks, it received mostly poor reviews and accusations of selling out. I submit to you that In Through The Out Door is, in reality, an excellent album that wasn’t given a fair chance. Sure it’s not “classic” Zeppelin, and sure it may take some getting used to, but it’s incredibly fresh sounding compared to Presence, and even parts of Physical Graffiti, which counts for something in my book. Even if you don’t like the album’s overall sound, you have to give Led Zeppelin credit for trying something new in their dying days; you can’t say the same about many of their contemporaries. As it turned out, Led Zeppelin had an ace up their sleeve: a horribly underutilized hidden gem by the name of John Paul Jones. Jones simply steals the show on this album, with his keyboard playing dominating almost every track, from the honky tonk playing on South Bound Saurez and Hot Dog to the mesmerizing synth work on Carouselambra and All My Love. His bass playing is excellent as well, particularly on the intro to Carouselambra, proving without a doubt that he is a virtuoso. Despite Jones driving the songs, Jimmy Page’s

guitar performance is still memorable throughout the album. His twangy country licks on Hot Dog and All My Love are highlights, and his riff in the middle section of Carouselambra is haunting and brilliant. I’m also fond of his classical guitar playing on All My Love, and expressive solo on I’m Gonna Crawl. After a traumatic series of events, which included vocal injuries, a severe car accident, and the death of his 5 year old son, Robert Plant starting using a more subdued vocal performance on this album, though the last minute of I’m Gonna Crawl proved he could still wail like a banshee. I actually prefer Plant’s mellower vocals- God knows his delivery was sometimes a bit too shrill in the past (i.e. Song Remains The Same). His lyrics are a bit silly at points (Carouselambra is totally nonsensical) but at least that shows a lack of self-consciousness. Finally, there’s drummer John Bonham. Though he was a raging alcoholic by this time, and would die only a year later, his drums on this album are just as punchy and powerful as he’s known for. The album’s flawless production certainly helps him shine through, though the reverb is a little excessive. Overall, this is an excellent album if you’re willing to give it a chance. Carouselambra is absolute masterpiece, almost on par with Stairway To Heaven and The Rain Song. South Bound Saurez, Fool In The Rain, and All My Love are well-constructed, catchy pop tunes which tastefully incorporate novel influences from other genres; In The Evening and I’m Gonna Crawl are moodier numbers which balance out the more commercial tracks, and Hot Dog is quite simply the most infectious, toe-tappin’ hootenanny of a country song I’ve ever heard. I would also highly recommend hunting down the three outtakes from In Through The Out Door that appear on CodaOzone Baby, Wearing & Tearing, and Darlene. They are excellent songs as well. ~ Seth Putnam, Sputnik Music

MICHAEL CIUFO with pianist CHRIS BILTON Friday, January 27th at 8:30pm in the Studio Theatre and it's like, This is what I need to be doing. I can't do anything else but this.” Although he had already been accepted at the U of T – that meant a 95 per cent grade average – Ciufo immediately applied for the four-year course at the Glenn Gould School of Music in the Vocal Performance program – despite being past the application deadline. But his vocal teacher from Oakville was good friends with the department head, and he was granted a private audition. That resulted in an offer of a full scholarship. With natural talent and training, Ciufo also has the business savvy necessary to make it in the music business. Of his musicschool colleagues, he was the first with his own website. He’s on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. At 19 and performing at various functions, he knew he needed a CD to circulate his name out there. He borrowed $5,000 from his grandmother, recorded a piano/vocal collection of classical and traditional Italian vocal music called Vieni Sul Mar (Come to the Sea) and, selling them at $20 a pop, paid her back in a month. Five years on, and Ciufo has raised the money from a number of area corporations for a far more ambitious project. Titled Momento and comprising a mix of classical and pop music, this is the album that could bring him to Canada and the world. ~ John P. McLaughlin, Postmedia News

Mississauga’s Michael Ciufo (pronounced Choofo) had a unique problem. After years of classical voice studies, and despite a fairly solid performance schedule, he nevertheless had a limited number of venues where he could work casually. It's not as if he could hit a bar or club and let loose with a couple of Andrea Bocelli hits. They don't want Andrea Bocelli hits in bars or clubs. They want CCR covers and Jagerbombs. At first, the plan on graduation was to become a cardiologist, and Ciufo had already been accepted into the life sciences program at the University of Toronto. He’d taken piano and played percussion in the school band and, after his voice changed, he started studying classical music, but medicine was his future. Then the Italian/Canadian Catholic took a school trip to Italy in his last year of high school and found himself at the Pantheon in Rome. Life was about to change. “The band leader, Mr. Biagiarelli, he pulled me aside,” says Ciufo. “He said, The band is going to be there to play a couple of hymns for the mass. I talked to the priest. Do you want to sing? It probably helped that he was Italian, talking to an Italian priest. One of my fellow classmates played the organ and I sang Panis Angelicus. “You know that moment when everything kind of comes together? The light goes on

LIGHT A DAN COOPER PRESENTATION Recognized as one of the best performing acts of their time, they toured 300 days a year including sold out performances at Carnegie Hall, the Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Expo ‘70 in Japan and the Isle of Wight Festival in England where they were the only act besides Jimi Hendrix asked to perform twice among acts that included The Doors, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, The Who and Chicago. Back home, their free concerts at Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square attracted one hundred thousand people. Indeed, it’s hard to find a person who lived in Canada through the 1970s who didn’t see the group live. They were Canada’s band. Free-wheeling, high-spirited – the music of Lighthouse mirrored the times. Their story is interwoven with the history of late twentieth century Canada. Their rise to fame coincided with a new awareness of Canadian culture, encouraged by the government of Pierre Elliot Trudeau. The emergence of Cancon (Canadian content regulations) influenced by Skip Prokop’s historic appearance before Parliament, allowed the music of Canadians to be heard across the country. Riding the wave, Lighthouse originated the cross-Canada rock tour, playing every major and minor venue across the country. Devoted audiences from province to province took pride in seeing one of their own make it to the top. Lighthouse made its live debut at Toronto’s Rock Pile on May 14, 1969, introduced by none other than Duke

Ellington. They were an instant smash. Manager Vinnie Fusco brought them to New York to record their first album at the fabled Electric Ladyland Studios. They were in the middle of one of their sessions when Fusco cheerily popped in to announce that he had just signed the band to a hot deal with RCA records for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lighthouse was on a roll, releasing more than a dozen charting singles over the next four years, including radio mainstays Sunny Days, 1849 and Pretty Lady. Lighthouse’s popularity continued to grow at home and abroad and they toured endlessly to meet the demand. Starting in

Saturday, January 28th at 8:00pm 1971 they won the first of three successive Juno Awards for Best Group of the Year, with McBride taking Best Male Vocalist in 1973. Album sales soared resulting in four gold albums and Canada’s first platinum album - Lighthouse Live! The band could be seen on television, in newspapers and magazines, even on Coca Cola bottle caps. Life became an endless cycle of performing, recording and promoting one album after the other. Lighthouse has found stability and commitment with the current line-up, together now for eighteen years. The rhythm section for the ten-member group still features the original founders, Skip Prokop (back on drums), Paul

Hoffert and Ralph Cole leading an all-star band that includes original members trombonist Russ Little and Steve Kennedy (saxophones and flute) with lead vocalist Dan Clancy, Don Paulton (keys), Doug Moore (bass), Simon Wallis (saxophones and flute) and Chris Howells (trumpet). But now, after so many years together, it could be easily be argued that everyone is an original member of the band. Lighthouse continues to generate excitement with innovative works including a multimedia stage show created in collaboration with the Desrosiers Dance Theatre that toured Brazil. Their 1994 release, Song of the Ages, was one of the first CDs to include games and animation that could be viewed on a computer. They performed a series of exhilarating and technologically demanding concerts in which sections of the band performed in different locations across Toronto linked by broadband cable. In 1996, they were honoured for their many years of success by being inducted into Q107’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Whether performing for summer Festival crowds or rapt Concert Hall audiences they continue to bring down the house.

wrapped with pancetta

Buca di Bacco’s Vincenzo Ricci has agreed to share his Pan Seared Radicchio Wrapped With Pancetta recipe with you this issue. But if you really don’t feel like cooking, make a reservation at Buca di Bacco – just minutes from the Oakville Centre – you won’t be disappointed!

INGREDIENTS • 1 medium size radicchio • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • Balsamic glaze • Piece of parmigiano • 8 thin slices of pancetta

DIRECTIONS 1 Cut radicchio into 4 even wedges, be sure to keep a little of the spine intact on each piece so that it stays together. 2 Place the radicchio in a bowl and season with salt, pepper and just a touch of the olive oil. 3 Place a piece of pancetta on both sides of the radicchio and put a toothpick through it to keep it in place. 4 Heat a large pan over medium to high heat and add the remaining olive oil. (if you need more “don’t be a scared” as my dad use to say its good for you...wait that was for wine...well you know what I mean!) 5 Place the radicchio in the pan and sear it on each side until the pancetta crisps and the radicchio is slightly wilted and browned. (about 3 minutes per side) 6 Transfer radicchio to a plate. Remove toothpicks. Add Balsamic glaze on top of each piece.

DOWNTOWN OAKVILLE BIA presents

Coco Love Alcorn Saturday, February 18th at 8:30pm in the Studio Theatre The recording of Coco’s most recent album, Play, began shortly after her daughter Ellie was born. When she wasn't singing along she was busy being the muse and reminding Coco to take lots of breaks for playtime. Released early in 2011, Coco embarked on an ambitious two month crossCanada tour to promote Play. Coco Love Solo is a collection of seven songs sold only at live shows. Performed and recorded over the course of a single evening in her own home, Solo includes Revolution, a fiery piece of writing that’s become a staple of her personal appearances. Fans are raving about this project – its quirky and honest collection of songs and its highly distinctive packaging. Coco and her husband graphic artist Simon Farla assemble these silk-screened albums individually. Each includes a hand-bound 20-page booklet of drawings, words and photos. This is artistry in its most profoundly intimate form. Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, then growing up between Vancouver and Toronto, Alcorn represents Canada from coast to coast. With a creative family background from both her parents, Alcorn was destined to be an accomplished artistic individual. Her passion for music has fueled her to create six albums and two electronica side projects; however Alcorn’s interests have reached far past the realm of song. Currently, she has her own clothing brand Simon + Coco, a collaboration between her and her husband, that she describes as up-cycle clothing with Coco-centric silkscreen designs.

As a performer, she is always in the moment; joyful and genuine, soulful and compelling. As a songwriter and vocalist, she effortlessly embraces her diverse musical influences- including Jazz, Pop, R&B and Folk- melding them seamlessly into her own distinctive style. Her playful and witty character, love of improvising and her willingness to engage fearlessly with the audience has made Coco Love Alcorn a leader and visionary on the Canadian music scene. Or as Lara Purvis of the Ottawa Xpress puts it, “A bright splash of colour amidst the many shades of Indie grey.” Alcorn has gained an incredible and loyal fan base while touring across Canada numerous times, playing an abundance of music festivals including the female inspired Lilith Fair. Over the years she has worked with a diverse and notable list of artists including Ani DiFranco, Burton Cummings, 54•40, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jesse Cook, Steve Poltz, Mark Jordan and Loudon Wainwright III. She has enjoyed success in the realm of music licensing, with multiple television song placements in The Dead Zone and The L Word.

DOWNTOWN OAKVILLE BIA presents

Emilie-Claire Barlow Friday, February 24th at 8:00pm Rich version of ‘The Beat Goes On,’, groove-wise, not Sonny and Cher’s. It’s definitely groove-oriented, and that gave me the inspiration of melding it with ‘Soul Bossa Nova.’ It’s something of a departure for me, with the big horns and the instrumental interlude. I had this vision of a sort of ‘mash-up’ of the two.” Another song given a radical facelift is Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright.” “In a way, Dylan gives you a clean slate, as his version was just voice and guitar,” says Barlow. “I took liberties with the melody on that one, and added a Latin groove that took it to a different place.” Sweet guitar, melodic horns and gentle scatting are featured on a version that will seduce even hardcore Dylanophiles. It is this kind of musical imagination that sets Barlow apart from her female jazz singer peers. The vocal side of her work has always come naturally. Her parents are both professional musicians, and by the age of seven Emilie-Claire was voice acting for television and radio. “I’d been a singer all my life, and felt like that is just what I am,” she explains. “I went on to study theory and arranging, and everything just clicked for me. I could get my ideas out on paper – the way I had imagined them. I could impart those ideas to my fellow musicians. This allowed me to fully express myself and to feel an even stronger connection to the music I was singing” The potent combination of well-honed vocal and musical chops and a charming stage presence has earned Emilie-Claire Barlow a sizeable and loyal following worldwide. The Beat Goes On is the eighth album in a recording career that now spans 12 years, and it is a record of which she is justifiably proud. “This recording is a direct reflection of where I am in my life, personally and musically. What people see and hear is really me.”

You could say that The Beat Goes On finds EmilieClaire Barlow going back to the future. You see, the Toronto jazz chanteuse’s acclaimed previous two albums, 2007’s The Very Thought of You and 2009’s Haven’t We Met? (both nominated for Juno Awards) drew upon the Great American Songbook and tunes from the ‘30s and ‘40s. Here, she looks forward to the ‘60s for her repertoire, and the result is a charming album that does real musical justice to that most colorful of decades.“I just felt it was time to do something a little different from the last two records,” Barlow explains. “I started looking at the songs of the ‘60s and they really struck me. This is not an attempt to sum up the ‘60s or call these the best songs of the decade. These are songs that hit me, sparking ideas of how to re-create them in my own way” The ‘60s are a veritable musical treasure trove and Emilie-Claire mines this rich vein with real deftness. The result is a wonderfully varied collection of classic songs given new life by her inventive arrangements and signature vocal skill. Emilie-Claire notes that the challenge of a project like this is that “you want to honour the songs but you want to make them your own.” She does that by recasting these gems in different musical settings, so the listener will get to experience them in a new light. Barlow cites “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” as an example. “The lyrics are quite melancholy. I wanted to re-harmonize it and have that darkness represented in the chords.” The result is a piano-driven ballad that’s a tender treat. Barlow’s well-developed skills as an arranger are on vivid display on the title track, an inventive blend of “The Beat Goes On” and Quincy Jones’ “Soul Bossa Nova,” the infectious instrumental tune familiar as both the theme of popular TV game show My Definition and the Austin Powers movie. “My inspiration was the Buddy and Cathy

“SHAKE IT UP” THE IMPROVISED SHAKESPEARE CO. • Friday, March 2nd at 8:00pm is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new! Founded in 2005, the ISC has been performing its critically-acclaimed show every Friday night at the world famous iO Theater in Chicago for over five years and continues to entertain audiences around the globe with its touring company. The ISC has been featured at the Piccolo Spoleto Fringe Festival, Off Broadway in New York City, the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival and the prestigious Just For Laughs festival in Montreal and Chicago. It has been named Chicago’s best improv group by both the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Examiner and has received a New York Nightlife Award for “Best Comedic Performance by a Group”. The ISC was recently honored by the Chicago Improv Foundation as its “Ensemble of the Year”.

Based on one audience suggestion (a title for a play that has yet to be written), the Improvised Shakespeare Co. (ISC) creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the players has brushed up on his “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, starcrossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. The night could reveal a tragedy, comedy, or history. Nothing is planned out, rehearsed, or written. Each play

DAN COOPER OF ROYAL LEPAGE presents

MonkeyJunk & JW-Jones Saturday, March 3rd at 8:00pm Legendary delta bluesman Son House spoke about a passion for his music and was quoted as saying “I’m talkin’ ’bout the blues … I ain’t talkin’ ’bout monkey junk!” MonkeyJunk is a band that draws heavily on the legends of the blues and translates that influence into a contemporary blend of swamp R&B, soul boogie, and bedroom funk. In the fall of 2008, MonkeyJunk was nominated for a Maple Blues Award for best new artist – no small feat, having been in existence for only six months and not having released a record yet. The following spring, they released their debut CD, Tiger in Your Tank, to critical acclaim thanks to strong support from radio internationally, as well as many specialty blues radio shows from all over the world. 2010 started off with a bang at the Maple Blues Awards – MonkeyJunk was nominated for 6 awards and won 5 of them, including Entertainer of the Year and Electric Act of the Year. At Canadian Music Week in Toronto in March 2010, MonkeyJunk beat out such respected artists as Jim Byrnes, Harrison Kennedy, Colin Linden, and Colin James to win Best Blues Artist at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

JW-Jones has one of the most energetic and exciting live shows on the scene. Some of the biggest names in blues today, including The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Rod Piazza, Anson Funderburgh with Sam Myers, The Mannish Boys and the legendary Hubert Sumlin have invited him to join them on stage. During a special appearance with the band, Hollywood celebrity and fan, Dan Aykroyd said, “this is an amazing blues band, and I’ve played with the best!” Mr. Aykroyd wrote the liner notes for the 2008 release ‘Bluelisted’. In 2009, Guitar World Magazine featured a CD called Guitar Masters Vol. 2 that put Jones alongside guitar stars B.B. King, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana. The buzz this band has created over the last decade has earned them a national award – the Maple Blues Award for Electric Act of the Year, and rave reviews throughout the globe. Canada's Top Touring Blues Act, Jones and his band are born entertainers, and with their unique sound, they continue to set the world on fire one country at a time!

THE 605 COLLECTIVE DANCE SOCIETY • Presented by PARADISO • The core artists of The 605 Collective Dance Society are Lisa Gelley, Shay Kuebler and Josh Martin. These Vancouver-based dance artists are committed to the creation and performance of new work inspired by both urban and contemporary dance. The freedom found in this cohesion, along with the merging of their distinct bodies and perspectives, has awakened an exciting, fresh, and unpredictable aesthetic to capture new audiences. The group first formed in Fall 2006, out of a small live/work studio, apartment #605, located in East Vancouver. These young artists began training each other, sharing their experience, and colliding ideas

and information from their various dance backgrounds to create a unified voice and establish a unique style that represented each of them. With the group’s extreme versatility and invited guest artists (such as Sasha Kozak, Maiko Miyauchi and Amber Funk Barton), the collective began experimenting and creating by using one another as the canvas for their ideas and visions. Through a constant collaboration, the collective members continue pushing past their individual limitations, moving towards new possibilities. The 605 Collective has emerged with a clear direction and strong vision to offer a highly athletic art

IN JUST A FEW WEEKS, YOUR DOG BECOMES A GOOD FAMILY MEMBER! Just listen to our students . . . BURLINGTON All the books in the world (and I have them all!) cannot take the place of the one-on-one feedback at McCann Dog Trainers. A total stranger, who saw our first attempts of going for a walk with our dog, commented today on how much he has improved in only a few weeks! BRANTFORD I didn’t realize how much fun it can be coming to class each week.

CAMBRIDGE I’m so fortunate that my vet highly recommended McCann Dog Trainers for my dog. CAMPBELLVILLE McCann Dog Trainers has a program that doesn’t waste time and produces results. DUNDAS I recommend McCann Dog Trainers to anyone who asks for a good training school (I work at a vet clinic). This is my second dog being trained here and if we had a third it would also come here. GUELPH It is worth the drive from Guelph! GRIMSBY I like that they have alternatives for training if one method doesn’t work. HAMILTON This is my third dog that I’ve trained at McCann Dog Trainers and I am as impressed now as I was back then. Many people comment on how well behaved they are and I always say that it’s all due to attending class at McCann Dog Trainers. KITCHENER The staff’s availability to answer problems or questions on the phone or in person was exceptional. MILTON I have been to other obedience schools that were not nearly as effective. We noticed an improvement in our dog after just one class at McCann Dog Trainers. MISSISSAUGA I have made great strides with my dog since being enrolled in this class. OAKVILLE I love the fact that there are so many instructors in each class to give feedback and individual attention. I receive many compliments on how well my dog behaves, especially for such a big dog. STONEY CREEK We would never have believed our dog could learn so much so quickly. TORONTO I found classes at McCann Dog Trainers to be fast paced and interesting. WATERLOO The drive was definitely worth it from Waterloo. Money well spent!

DAN COOPER OF ROYAL LEPAGE presents

KIM MITCHELL Thursday, March 8th at 8:00pm An interview with Kim Mitchell, January 2012. Questions by the Oakville Centre’s Ronnie Brown. Q. Since your last concert here in September of 2009, we have received a lot of requests to “bring you back”. One of the other comments we heard a lot of was how many people were amazed on how great you sounded live. After thirty plus years in the business has playing live changed for you or is it the same feeling as when you started?

A. as you grow larger you need a few more things...a good manager, agent, accountant, lawyer and a good shrink...other than that you just have to keep in mind even though you can’t see past the 20th row...they’re there so include them when laying the vibe out... Q. On your radio program, you have had many great interviews and jam sessions. Is there one guitar jam with another artist that left a lasting impression on you?

A. playing live is like drinking wine...when you are a kid you grab a bottle from your friend’s parent’s cellar and swig it out of the bottle and don’t really notice anything except you feel like heck the next day...now you drink a glass or two but notice wines flavors...subtle bouquet... you pair it with the right food...you savour it...you basically enjoy it more. .. playing live now is like that... but you can still wake up feeling like heck the next day...

A. on radio each musician that has come in has been special to me...it’s nerve racking as all get out...having said that...alice cooper doing ‘only women bleed’ while i played the chords...rodger hodgson from supertramp...paul rodgers...sammy hagar...all a lot of fun...one of my funniest moments was long ago when jay leno called to promote a show he was doing in canada...i said ‘hi jay im kim and i’ll be doing the interview’ and he said...‘i know who you are...max webster...1978...was doing the draft dodger tour and you were crossing canada in the same halls as me’...made me laugh...

Q. There are two Canadian guitar players that have such a unique style of playing that when you hear them you know automatically who they are – David Wilcox with his wild string bending style and Kim Mitchell and your incredible “phrasing” when playing a lead run. When you were learning how to play who were some of your mentors? And as you developed as a guitar player, were you aware how “unique” your sound and the Max Webster sound was?

Q. Being a radio show host, touring and recording musician, have you found the perfect balance as an artist?

A. you’re a product of your environment...when i was young my artist musician painter friends really tried to do something unique all the time...we all listened to pretty unusual music .. stuff that wouldn’t get you a date with the nice gal across the road...that mixed with going home and hearing motown...top 40...and rock and roll made me the player i am...along with two unknown guitar players from sarnia...one had really unique phrasing and the other played lightening fast...i grabbed a couple things from them and moved on...

A. balance?...hmm...i love both gigs and still get to play a lot so balance is never a problem...i had an incredible year attendance/gig wise last year right across the country...there were a few mondays where i might be kinda exhausted from flying and traveling but the station recognizes the importance of those on the road experiences...it’s in part what makes their afternoon drive host unique... Q. What are the things we can look forward to in the near future from Kim Mitchell?

Q. In my youth growing up in the Barrie area, I saw you perform numerous times at the Atherly Arms in Orillia, the Dardanella in Wasaga Beach and the Key to Bala, I have to say I saw some amazing shows. Then in no time you were headlining concerts at Canada’s Wonderland and arenas around the province and Canada. Were there any changes as a performer you had to make in this transition?

A. the future?...i hope to continue to work, play, record, and most of all enjoy my life with my friends and my family...

GOODNESS A Pay-What-You-Can Performance Friday, March 30th at 8:00pm in the Studio Theatre

THE COMPANY: Volcano, Toronto, a national and international awardwinning, idea-driven theatre company based in Toronto, in partnership with sister company, Philadelphia-based Volcano USA. THE PROJECT: Goodness by Michael Redhill, directed by Ross Manson – winner of two top awards at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival Fringe (including the Carol Tambor Foundation “Best of Edinburgh” Award – out of a field of 1,867 productions); and a slew of rave reviews in Edinburgh, New York, Toronto, Winnipeg, Kigali and Huye, Rwanda. THE STORY: Goodness is a play that examines genocide from a novel perspective. A JewishCanadian writer, and the descendent of Holocaust survivors, meets a woman who has lived through a much more recent genocide. The conflict between them fuels the play, which examines individual responsibility, prejudice and revenge. The stage is filled with music from around the world, from Ukraine to Croatia to Zimbabwe. The audience, never told where the recent genocide occurred, is deprived of any easy platform from which to judge. Instead they have to listen…

PIONEER FAMILY POOLS presents

L.A.WOMAN The Doors • CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE • Thursday, April 12th at 8:00pm On Morrison Hotel, The Doors had taken a few steps toward righting its ship, but rather than dealing with the problems that had plagued every outing since Strange Days – a lack of material, a general sense of disinterest and weariness, and, of course, Jim Morrison’s incessant drinking – the band simply had learned how to work around them. Not surprisingly, most of the skeletons once again came prancing out of the closet during the initial sessions to L.A. Woman, which, in turn, caused longtime producer Paul Rothchild to throw his hands in the air and walk away from the project. This, however, was precisely the swift kick in the ass that the group needed to survive. Left on its own and with little to lose, The Doors, along with engineer Bruce Botnick, retreated to its rehearsal space, where, with Elektra’s blessing, it turned its familiar hangout into a makeshift recording studio. The relaxed and comforting environment had the effect of calming the group’s nerves. At the same time, the loss of Rothchild forced The Doors to confront its many issues. Most important of all, it gave the ensemble a reason to come together. It had to prove Rothchild was wrong about its future. Shedding the tentativeness of Morrison Hotel but building upon its blues-oriented structures, L.A.Woman became one of The Doors’ more focused and inspired endeavors, and it fulfilled the need for escape and rebirth that permeated its lyrics. From the James Brown-style

funk of The Changeling to the snarling cover of John Lee Hooker’s Crawling King Snake, to the tired resignation of Cars Hiss by My Window, the music flowed as naturally as it ever had for the band. Robby Krieger was liberated by the presence of second guitarist Marc Benno, and the exemplary contributions that he made to the set were as imaginative as they were variegated. Likewise, Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore fully rediscovered their method of unspoken communication, and with their confidence reinstated, they provided sturdy support to Morrison’s ominously edgy rockers as well as his haunted laments. The Doors had approached the recording sessions for Waiting for the Sun, The Soft Parade, and Morrison Hotel by trying to recapture the success of its initial sojourns. “Money beats soul every time,” Morrison had chanted during each iteration of Roadhouse Blues, as if to drive home this point. For L.A.Woman, The Doors’ easy-going attitude, by contrast, allowed the magic simply to happen. For certain, the group’s maturation hadn’t come easily, but throughout the endeavor, the band sounded as if it finally had made peace with itself. Tunes like the heady rock of the title track and the hypnotically eerie Riders on the Storm easily rivaled the best moments of the collective’s career. Although the ensemble had no idea that the outing would be its swan song, L.A. Woman proved to be a fitting epitaph that allowed The Doors to go out on top. ~ John Metzger, The Music Box, August 2007

For the last 25 years, Just For Laughs have constantly re-invented and expanded the definition of comedy in Canada, the U.K. and the United States as well as in over 100 other markets throughout out the world. Featuring one of the largest comedy festivals in Montreal Canada, Just For Laughs has expanded as a touring production crossing the country and presenting four of comedy’s brightest stars in your community. (At press time, the fourth headliner had yet to be confirmed.)

GODFREY received an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois where he majored in psychology. Here he tried out for and made the varsity football team, where he performed at a traditional talent show for new team members. He stole the show performing impressions of his coaches and teammates and discovered his comedic talent. He honed his stand-up skills at the legendary All Jokes Aside Comedy Club in Chicago in the early 90s. In 1995, Godfrey made his New York debut at Caroline’s Comedy Club and The Comic Strip Live and was soon signed by the William Morris Talent Agency. He began working regularly in television, first behind the cameras as a warm-up comedian for The Cosby Show and Soul Man. In 2000, Godfrey appeared in the Aspen Comedy Festival and on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. He also played a comical role in the urban movie Soul Plane, acting as an African pilot. He has been in numerous episodes of BET’s Comic View and continues to do film and television work in New York. His first one-hour special, Godfrey: Black by Accident was shot for Comedy Central last year to a standing room only audience.

Comedian PETE ZEDLACHER was born in Wawa, a small mining town in northern Ontario. He was an excellent student, always bringing in good grades but he took a keen liking to comedy and theatre. After class, he’d be seen rehearsing the school play, hitting the books, then hitting the real homework, watching re-runs of Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. In the 11 years Pete’s stand-up has taken him around the world, including the Dominican Republic, Germany, England, Holland, Greece and even Afghanistan. He’s appeared in his own 1-hour comedy special, Comedy Now, which aired on CTV and the Comedy Network, which in subsequent re-runs landed the second highest ratings in the series history. Pete’s acting credits include The Sean Cullen Show, Puppets Who Kill, Sue Thomas F. B. EYE and roles in the feature films American Pie Presents The Naked Mile and Phantom Punch along side Ving Rhames. Most recently Pete toured with The Just For Laughs Comedy Tour all across Canada and currently works as a writer and performer on Canada’s late night talk show The Hour With George Stroumboulopoulos.

Jacob MOON A DAN COOPER PRESENTATION

Saturday, April 21 at 8:30pm in the Studio Theatre

Jacob Moon has added hard work and tenacity to his giftedness as a singer and songwriter of award-winning pop and folk songs. He is also known for his amazing live show which features his command of the guitar (often sounding like an entire orchestra), and his renowned skill as a “live looper”. It’s there on the live stage that his compositions take flight, and audiences are swept up in the jetstream. He has achieved great success as an independent artist, and just released his seventh CD, Maybe Sunshine. His previous CDs have been recognized by the press and the musical community as worthy of several awards, and have been scooped up by enthusiastic audiences across Canada and the US. His popular music videos on YouTube recently gained attention on a national level, when rock legends Rush asked Moon to perform at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala. Geddy, Neil and Alex insisted that Moon to be there to play Subdivisions, which he performed on a Hamilton rooftop in his 2008 video (now at 200,000 hits). His performance was immediately followed by the biggest response of the evening (a standing ovation), and has led to some exciting new opportunities. Stylistically, Jacob Moon fits into the roots category, with some eclectic twists. His strong rhythmic sense is complemented by a keen ear for catchy melody and lyrical depth. The opportunity to hear and experience a Jacob Moon show is not to be missed.

DAN COOPER OF ROYAL LEPAGE presents

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR Saturday, May 5th at 8:00pm

“Last year I heard something I thought I would never hear...a British White Girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!” (Dave Stewart/Eurythmics) Some songs were written during the flight to Memphis, a few others were written 10 years ago and are kind of her signature tunes. The power trio - that’s the kind of band which suits Joanne Shaw Taylor, are also at home in Birmingham, where she and her trio play the pubs, clubs and festivals. “I always wanted to try the power trio thing, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Paladins or Jimi Hendrix. I thought it would bring me on as a guitar player and a singer - which I think it has done. And” - Joanne chuckles - “it’s also cheaper, you know.” She talks about some influences. When Joanne was a little schoolgirl, she was caught by the rough side of the blues: SRV, Albert Collins, the Paladins, Jimi Hendrix. At Christmas she got her first electric guitar. The old classical guitar, which she had played since she was eight, vanished from the children’s room. “As soon as I heard SRV and Albert Collins I knew pretty much that I wanted to do that full stop. That was the lifestyle route that I was going to go down. It was never a hobby. I was always very serious and dedicated to it.” Taylor’s second release was Diamonds In The Dirt. In 2010, she won Best Female Vocalist at the British Blues Awards. Both her albums have peaked at number 8 in the US Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. At the 2011 British Blues Awards, Taylor won both Best Female Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year for her track “Same As It Never Was” from Diamonds In The Dirt.

When Dave Stewart had his big experience, Joanne Shaw Taylor was only 16. Her skills at the Telecaster were so perfect that the blues fan and Eurythmics frontman asked her to join his supergroup D.U.P. to tour Europe in 2002. She was also offered a record contract but the label went bust. Today Joanne is 26 and happy about the fact that she took her time with the recording debut: “I wanted to take time out to really work on my craft and make sure that when I did an album it was the best that I could do.” White Sugar is the proof. The confident and young British woman keeps the traditions of her idols but she is going her own way. With her record debut she demonstrates her talent with ten songs that she has written herself. Playing the hard stuff à la SRV, making us feel the bite of her Telecaster just like Albert Collins did or working out charming little riffs from the Jimi Hendrix book – Joanne is always seeking – and finding – new terrain. Funky shuffles, soulful ballads or the hypnotic hookline of the title track, a burning instrumental, she presents her craft powerfully.
