PercyJackson and the Lightning Thief Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 1 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. Presented by Theatreworks USA Adapted from the book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan Recommended for ages 6 and up

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’ master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy has 10 days to find and return Zeus’ stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. Regular ticket: $20 SPECIAL OFFER: Purchase three or more Family Series* shows and save $5 per ticket. All prices include taxes and handling fees. Interesting facts about Lightning Read on and enjoy all our fun facts and interesting information about lightning. • Lightning is a powerful burst of electricity that happens very quickly during a thunderstorm. • Lightning is caused by an electrical charge in the atmosphere that is unbalanced. • The movement of rain and ice inside a thundercloud creates an electrical charge, with the negative charge (electrons) forming at the bottom of the cloud and the positive charge (protons) forming at the top. • Opposites attract so the negative charge at the bottom of the cloud seeks out a positive charge to connect with. • Lightning can occur inside clouds, between clouds and from clouds to the ground. • There are bolts of lightning striking somewhere on Earth every second! • Lightning strikes usually last around 1 or 2 micro seconds. • Lightning contains millions of volts of electricity. • Thunder is the sound caused by lightning.

THE LITTLE GYM OF OAKVILLE These programs give children a ‘Jump Start’ in school Scientists have found that children with more highly developed motor skills demonstrate a greater level of school-readiness and fare better in kindergarten than those with less developed motor skills. The Little Gym of Oakville has applied this research to its mission to help children develop their skills and confidence through a professionally developed curriculum. Not only do children learn to enhance their movement, coordination and balance, they also develop self-confidence by participating in programs designed to be fun, interactive and non-competitive. “We’ve had parents tell us that their children don’t even realize they’re learning because they’re having so much fun,” says Anson Lee-Pearn, Gym Director. “At The Little Gym, children learn to listen, follow directions, interact with other children emotionally and socially, and develop their physical capabilities. We’ve seen this happen, quite literally, one cartwheel or somersault at a time.” The Little Gym was founded in 1976. Since that time, the company has seen tremendous growth and success with its curriculumbased programs targeting children from four months to 12 years old. The Little Gym in Oakville opened in 2008 using the same successful formula to benefit the community’s families and children. “Each week, we offer classes with themes like Eye Can ‘Hand’-le It, and High Spirits on the High Bar that engage children and teach them new motor skills,” Anson says. “The curriculum is almost like a recipe –

as children progress through the program, we add just the right amount of new ingredients or activities to strengthen and build upon what they’ve already learned.” Highly trained instructors supervise all activities which may include tumbling, balance beam exercises, mats and other gymnastics equipment. Recreational equipment such as balls, scarves and bubbles also are used to help younger children develop skills like hand-eye coordination. Parents are welcome and encouraged to get involved with many activities along with their children. The non-competitive environment at The Little Gym provides a level of comfort to which children immediately respond. They are not afraid to participate or try new exercises, and instructors reward their efforts with consistent, positive feedback. “Children thrive in this type of environment,” Anson says. “We gauge success of our programs in terms of the self-confidence that children gain as a result of the skills that they learn, not in terms of winning or losing. The Little Gym’s primary goal is to provide children with a foundation in selfconfidence that they’ll carry with them into adulthood.” For more information about The Little Gym of Oakville and its variety of courses that include gymnastics, dance and sports skills, call 905-8158151 or visit www.tlgoakvillecan.com.
