DAS HAUS DER KUNST

Way back when, Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe – iconic in the world of German literature – already said that art is the go-between for the inexpressible. The inexpressible is also what lies at the heart of the Aaartfoundation Kitzbühel, which has made this house with a soul its home to touch art lovers with modern-day art.

Situated in Kirchberg in Tirol in Austria’s Kitzbühel district on a beautiful green piece of land with a view of the mountains, stands a house that is young and old at the same time. It can be defined as young since it has not even been 15 years since art lovers and collectors Mieke and Theo Jongen had it built. It can be defined as old, since it has been built from timbers that are more than 100 years old – dense heavy wood whose time as harbour moorings for ocean liners had long expired. Whoever enters the space gets the feeling of being time-warped to the past, thanks to the old-world charm where everything comes across quieter, slower and more meaningful. Which is not a bad thing, for this is where art happens and art needs plenty of space and time to transport its observers into a state of timelessness where space does not exist.

A place of dialogue

The young old house is home to the Aaartfoundation Kitzbühel – AAA being a play on the best reviews by rating agencies. It is a house of art, a meeting place for artists, art lovers, collectors and the artworks themselves – a place of dialogue. It houses paintings, photographs, sculptures, multi-media and conceptual art. The works that are exhibited here is art by people who want us to think. Contemporary artists who are not afraid to overstep boundaries to expand our horizons, especially when they violate existing taboos or force us to look into the mirror!

“Truth Reality Certainty”

This is the name of the exhibit of photographic artist Helmut Grill and sculptor Friedrich Sebastian Feichter currently on display here. Grill’s art entails details that he removes from their usual context and places in a strange setting. This play with fragments tends to irritate, raise questions, provoke. By contrast Feichter’s sculptures, a blend of soft and severe forms, represent beings caught between the past and the future. In combination with one another, the two styles unfold an entirely idiosyncratic dynamic that resonates with the house.

That which is exhibited is not only about the pure display of art or about the conveying of expertise. “Demanding art does not have to be understood at a first glance. If it has us preoccupied, but we cannot put a finger on why, then the chemistry is right and it warrants us delving into it further,” is the view of art broker Martina Dorner-Bauer. In this respect, the house of art is also a house of beginnings, of stimuli that are planted in the mind that you then take with you to your own world – in turn touching others from there.
