Attrition and Cancellation Policies ATTRITION: The Sheraton Greensboro Hotel is pleased to be able to offer groups booking guestrooms more than 12 months out a 20% attrition policy. The policy asks for a review date of 10 months prior to the event with a voluntary 10% reduction at that time followed by an additional 10% allowable at the conclusion of the event. CANCELLATION: Any cancelled event that is not covered by the Force Majeure/ Act of God clause is subject to liquidated damages. These liquidated damage fees are proportional to the amount of lost revenues that were anticipated by the Hotel and the amount of time prior to the start date of the event that it was cancelled. Alcohol Laws

North Carolina Safe Road Laws

North Carolina law states that the driver may turn right on red unless otherwise posted. Seat belts are required for the driver and all passengers. Children under age 8 or 80 lbs. must ride in a child-restraint device that meets federal standards. Motorists will be fined $25 for failure to obey seat belt laws. Drivers must use headlights whenever windshield wipers are used for inclement weather. Motorcyclists are required to wear a helmet and to use headlights at all times. If they can safely do so, motorists must move over to one lane away from any law enforcement or other emergency vehicle that is on the side of the highway.

Speed Limits

The citywide speed limit is 35 mph, unless otherwise posted. School zone speed limits are 25 mph. The statewide speed limit is 55 mph, except where posted on certain sections of interstate highways.

Famous Residents Andrew Jackson

Horse racing and cockfighting are said to have been Andrew Jackson's favorite pastimes while he lived in Guilford County. His old race tracks are still pointed out around Summerfield.

Dolley Madison

Dolley Payne Madison, North Carolina's only first lady of the United States, was the wife of President James Madison. Local church records show that Dolley was born on May 20, 1768, in a log cabin at Guilford College.

Edward R. Murrow

Edward R. Murrow was born in the community of Centre Friends Meeting House in Guilford County. He achieved worldwide fame as a radio and television personality on CBS, and was a famous World War II reporter and news commentator. Murrow Boulevard in Greensboro is named for him.

General Nathanael Greene

Gen. Nathanael Greene is famous for defending this country during the Revolutionary War. On March 15, 1781, an American army commanded by Greene made its stand at Guilford Courthouse to contest the invasion of North Carolina by British forces.

John Motley Morehead

John Motley Morehead, North Carolina governor from 1841 to 1845, met and married Greensboro resident Anne Eliza Lindsay. They assumed residence at Blandwood Mansion, which is open to the public for tours today. Morehead also was the first president of the North Carolina Railroad and founder of the Edgeworth Female Seminary.

William Sydney Porter "O. Henry"

William Sydney Porter was born on Polecat Creek in the Centre Friends Meeting House community in southern Guilford County on Sept. 11, 1862. The store that O. Henry worked in can be seen in the Greensboro Historical Museum. O. Henry wrote steadily up to the time of his death. In total, he wrote between 250 and 300 stories.
