The Piedmont region was home to Saura and Keyauwee Indians and other European settlers in the early 1700s. However, it wasn’t until the pivotal moment that Major General Nathanael Greene of the American revolutionary forces led the Battle of Guilford Courthouse that distinctly marked the early beginnings of our great city. Although this battle ended in defeat for Greene’s soldiers, the British General Cornwallis sustained so many soldier casualties that he was forced to retreat into Virginia. This retreat paved the way for ultimate defeat and surrender by Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. Our city was originally named Greensborough in honor of General Nathanael Greene.
Have you ever wondered why Greensboro has been nicknamed the “Gate City?” This nickname dates back to the 1840s when Greensboro was included to be part of the new railroad network leading to its role as a major transportation hub for North Carolina. Textile manufacturing was the main industry during the mid-1800s resulting in our city being one of the nation’s biggest textile manufacturing centers.
The American Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s hits close to home. While economic momentum was taking off, social justice also followed suit. Four African American college students initiated the movement here in Greensboro when they led a massive sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s restaurant in 1960 that resulted in similar protests throughout the South. The original location of the restaurant can be toured during a visit at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.

Known as the birthplace of the sit-in movement, Greensboro’s place in African American — and U.S. — history is well-known. But, African American history in Greensboro goes back to the Revolutionary War and continues to shape the Gate City today. The New Garden Woods, now known as the Guilford College Woods, were a known meeting place on the Underground Railroad where Levi and Vestal Coffin assisted runaways going to Indiana from 1819 to 1826. Within these woods remains a champion tulip poplar tree, over 300 years old, known as the Underground Railroad Tree. Today, you can navigate the trail as a simulation of how fugitives seeking freedom navigated the same woods. The trail leads to the tree standing as a silent witness to Underground Railroad activities on the land that served as a crossroad to freedom.

With temperatures dropping, Greensboro has a range of activities to help beat cabin fever. Round1 Bowling and Amusement offers fun the whole family can enjoy with its bowling alleys, karaoke booths, billiards, ping pong tables, top-of-the-line arcade games, and darts! If browsing is more of your go-to, visit Replacements, Ltd. and take a free tour every hour from 10am-5pm. With more than eight football fields of dinnerware, collectibles and estate jewelry, pet-friendly Replacements is a one-of-a-kind shopping destination. Come November, start the season out bright by visiting McLaurin Farms, which is transformed into a Country Christmas festival with hayrides and over 1 million Christmas lights. You can ride the train, make crafts, participate in activities, and visit Santa Claus and the Grinch! ·Afterward, warm up with a hot treat from one of our local coffee shops: A Special Blend, Common Grounds or Green Bean.
This time of the year is the perfect time to soak up being outdoors! Experience a downtown local family hotspot LeBauer Park & check out the interactive water feature, dog park, playground, and its close proximity to downtown shops & restaurants. Head to the Greensboro Grasshoppers Baseball Stadium for some affordable entertainment that all ages will enjoy. ·Finish it off with some good Southern cooking at Stamey’s Barbecue. It has even got the stamp of approval from several presidents who have dined there!
FALL Take a drive and soak in the beautiful colors of fall & the crisp air on your way to the Old Mill of Guilford. This working gristmill and country store is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a tasty piece of North Carolina with you when you purchase their grits, flour, pancake or muffin mixes among many other options! With 3 city lakes including Lake Brandt, kayak, fish and hike around as the season changes. Looking for seasonal family fun? J. Razz and Tazz Farm features a 10-acre corn maze, cow train ride, hayrides, corn bins and a Haunted Forest Hayride offered at dark. Brave the Woods of Terror and replace any nightmares with sweet dreams by grabbing a slice of pumpkin cheesecake at Cheesecakes by Alex afterward.
