AN INTERNATIONAL CITY Today, Greensboro is a city of 270,000. The textile industry no longer reigns supreme, but the city’s location at the center of the eastern United States has been a big draw for the transportation and logistics business. The city has also proven a big draw for people from outside the United States. The local school system boasts students from more than 140 countries. More than 100 languages are spoken in the area. Travel down the city’s main thoroughfares and you’ll find banh mi, Korean barbecue and tacos al pastor. At the National Folk Festival in September, you can catch Jamaican reggae artists, Rwandan dancers and Tibetan opera.
The City of Greensboro was founded in 1808, made up of 42 acres purchased for $98. But the area had long been a crossroads for indigenous groups on the east coast, and Germans, Quakers, and Scots-Irish began arriving in large numbers in the 1740s and 1750s. Colonial officials established Guilford County in 1771, and set up a county seat in what is now the north side of Greensboro. In 1781, 4,400 troops under the command of Continental Army Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene (for whom the city was later named) faced off against 1,900 men under Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Though Cornwallis emerged victorious, he lost a fourth of his troops, and wound up surrendering at Yorktown later that year. The conflict is commemorated at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, as well as at an annual reenactment. Throughout the early part of the 19th century, the area served as a way station for the underground railroad, with the Quaker-run Guilford College providing shelter for many an escaped slave. The Civil War brought a number of refugees to town, which ultimately included Confederate President Jefferson Davis. A few days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Davis and his cabinet arrived in Greensboro hoping to continue the war, but Confederate Gen. Joseph Johnston and Union Gen. William Sherman soon worked out a peace. The industrial revolution took hold in the late 19th century. The textile business became king, and brothers Moses and Ceasar Cone became the largest producers of denim in the world. On Feb. 1, 1960, four black students from N.C. A&T University took a seat at the Woolworth’s whites only lunch counter, and refused to leave. Their action sparked a wave of sit-in protests across the south, helping bring an end to Jim Crow. The Woolworth’s closed in 1993, but the site now houses the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, where visitors can see exhibits about the sit-in movement and learn about other Civil Rights heroes.
The city has long been a breeding ground for the arts. Short story writer William Sydney Porter, aka O. Henry, was born in Greensboro in 1862 and remains the namesake of a local hotel and magazine. Bronze sculptures of him and his dog, Lovey, reside downtown. Visitors will find original productions at Triad Stage, recognized by the New York Drama League as one of the best regional theaters in the country. Or they can spend an evening with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, Greensboro Ballet or Greensboro Opera. Around town, sculptures by internationally renowned artist Jim Gallucci are on view. And galleries along Elm Street offer plenty of wares by local painters, potters and woodworkers. ARTISTIC IMPULSES EXTEND INTO THE CULINARY REALM AS WELL. Enjoy a unique take on ramen or the Cuban sandwich at Crafted - The Art of Street Food. Or admire the hickory and porcine arts at Stamey’s Barbecue. Maybe engage in a little culinary artistry of your own by picking up some locally grown produce at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market. In recent years four craft breweries in and around downtown Greensboro have joined local mainstays Natty Greene’s and Red Oak, and more are on the way. In 2016, the city’s first legal distillery in more than a century, Fainting Goat Spirits, opened up, producing a line of vodka, whiskey and gin. And to work off any extra calories, take a hike along the garden and tree-lined trails at the 17-acre Greensboro Arboretum. Experience Greensboro, and experience a proud history, experience a hub of innovation and artistry and experience the world.

history
History in the center of it all. HISTORY OF GREENSBORO Saura and Keyauwee Indians called North Carolina’s Piedmont region home in the 1600s and early 1700s, then Germans, Quakers of Welsh and English descent and Scotch-Irish from the northern colonies, and African Americans began to move here around 1740. These pioneers worked the land and shaped the future for generations to come. In an effort to thwart the invasion of North Carolina by 1,900 redcoats under Lord Cornwallis, American Major Gen. Nathanael Greene deployed 4,400 rebels at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. Cornwallis held the field after an intense fight, but he lost a quarter of his army, which hastened his defeat at Yorktown seven months later. In 1807, the residents of the area voted to create a new, more centrally located seat of government. The following year, elected officials mapped out a 42-acre tract of land, paid $98 to purchase it, and suggested that it be named “Greensborough” in honor of Major Gen. Greene. A CENTER FOR EDUCATION By 1767 Presbyterian minister David Caldwell and his wife Rachel had started a local school that prepared young men to study at the university level. By 1837, Quakers in the New Garden community had formed a boarding school for training teachers. Known today as Guilford College, it was the first coeducational institution in the South. A tax-supported public school system was started in 1875, but schools remained segregated until 1957. In 1971, Greensboro redistricted its schools and implemented a busing plan to achieve full school integration. Greensboro was ahead of most cities in placing emphasis on higher education for women and African Americans. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (originally the Normal and Industrial School for White Girls), North Carolina A&T State University (formerly the Agriculture and Mechanical
G SO 8 | www.VisitGreensboroNC.com
College for the Colored Race), Bennett College for Women (originally Bennett Seminary), Greensboro College (originally Greensborough Female College) and Guilford College continue to play a vital role in the city today. As do the newly formed (2005) Elon University School of Law and (1958) Guilford Technical Community College. A CENTER OF ECONOMIC GROWTH The railroad was a key factor in Greensboro’s prosperity and industrial growth. John Motley Morehead, a North Carolina governor and former student of David Caldwell, campaigned for two decades to have Greensboro included as a stop on the North Carolina Railroad. Finally, in 1856, a special east-west line of tracks was completed. During the Civil War, Greensboro was both a storehouse and a railroad center for the Confederacy, a vital source of supplies and troops for Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Civilian refugees and wounded soldiers were transported and sheltered here. Greensboro became the seat of the Confederacy on April 11, 1865, as Confederate President Jefferson Davis arrived here after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox to discuss the military situation of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and the weakened Army of Tennessee. Later, all Confederate forces in North Carolina were mustered out and paroled in Greensboro. William Sydney Porter was an eyewitness to the occupation of Greensboro by Union troops. Years later, using his pen name “O. Henry”, he recounted these experiences in some of his short stories. Porter’s uncle ran a successful town drugstore in the 1890s. Lunsford Richardson, one of the store’s investors, developed a line of “Vick’s Family Remedies.” Vicks VapoRub was one of his successful creations.
history Textiles were important in Greensboro as early as 1828 when Henry Humphreys built North Carolina’s first steam-powered cotton mill. In 1895, Moses and Ceasar Cone selected Greensboro for their Southern Finishing and Warehouse Co., forerunner of Cone Mills. By 1920, Blue Bell was a successful maker of bib overalls. In 1935, attracted by the city’s railroad and airport, Burlington Industries moved its headquarters to Greensboro. Guilford Mills began operations in 1946. VF Corporation’s world headquarters are now located in Greensboro. Another strong manufacturing base in Greensboro and the South has always been cigarettes. ITG Brands is headquartered in Greensboro. Greensboro was again a military center during World War II when railroads brought thousands of soldiers here for army training. In 1944, the training facility became the Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD) for the Army Air Corps in the Eastern United States. A CENTER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE A quest for diversity is a part of Greensboro’s past, with significant events forming the content and context of African American history.
Two college communities also have played a part in shaping the area’s African American history. Bennett College now is a liberal arts school for African American women. North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, the largest African American school in the state, boasts alumni astronaut Ron McNair and civil rights activist and Minister Jesse Jackson, among many others. One of the most significant civil rights protests in American history began with the birth of the nation’s sit-in movement at the segregated lunch counter in Greensboro’s downtown F.W. Woolworth store on Feb. 1, 1960. On that day four North Carolina A&T State University freshmen sat down at the counter and asked for service, an act of courage that ignited a spark that fueled protests across the country, ultimately breaking down barriers across the South. To commemorate this momentous event, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum has opened in the former Woolworth Building in Greensboro’s center city. The Museum and its associated programmatic and archival units not only chronicle civil rights history, but also focus on current civil right issues and freedom movements around the world.
As early as 1830, Quaker anti-slave advocate Vestal Coffin was prominent in the movement of slaves from Greensboro. From 1830 until the end of the Civil War, Vestal and his cousin Levi took part in an informal network known as the Underground Railroad, providing shelter and assistance to hundreds of slaves seeking freedom. Levi later relocated to Ohio, where he was known as “President of the Underground Railroad.” Greensboro’s Guilford College campus was a location known as a hiding place for runaways. In the early 1900s, Dr. Charlotte Hawkins founded a preparatory school for African Americans called the Palmer Memorial Institute. Located just east of Greensboro, the school operated until 1971, when integration and adequate high schools lessened the appeal of a separate black school. The school now is the site of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum at Historic Palmer Memorial Institute, the first state historic site honoring an African American woman.
A CENTER OF DIVERSITY Greensboro traces its origins to people with distinctive cultural backgrounds. Today that influence has multiplied tenfold, as immigrants and refugees arrive from across the state, the nation, and the world. Greensboro’s cultural life, public schools, and even restaurants shine with an exciting international hue. Well-known Southern traditions flourish, too.

GREENSBORO: MINIVAN ADVENTURES!
Pack the Van, Load Up the Snacks and Make Way for Greensboro By Lexi Hotchkiss, Charlotte Moms Blog Trust me. As a mom of two toddlers, I know that family travel can be the ultimate test of wills. The minivan is packed to the gills. The snacks are pre-portioned by the dozens. The iPad is loaded with more CGI animation than you care to admit. And, your wallet is working overtime. But you know that any given moment, the wheels could come falling off the whole operation thanks to unexpectedly long wait times, limited physical activity, a hangry meltdown or high-priced/low-value entertainment. So, it’s critical that your destination offers a well-rounded assortment of attractions that aren’t just flexible, easy to access and family-friendly—but, frankly, a lot of fun. And, as a mom blogger who does a lot of family travel, rarely do I stumble upon destinations that can offer all three.
way for the Museum where the youngsters will go nuts for the gigantic T-Rex replica, slithery little frogs and freaky-deaky snakes (gulp). Greensboro Children’s Museum & Edible Schoolyard In the world of mom blogging, we do a lot of traveling to try out new destinations, activities and attractions. So, visiting children’s museums has practically become a skill set on my CV. I’ve seen tons of them and, frankly, they’re a dime a dozen. Enter: The Greensboro Children’s Museum & Edible Schoolyard. From someone who knows, I can tell you that this place is a cut above the rest.
But, Greensboro is that diamond in the ruff. Whether you’ve got toddlers spellbound by sharks or a teen with a proclivity for art, your family is going to find their travel niche in Greensboro. WHERE TO GO? When asked “Why Greensboro?” when planning my family vacation, I can provide you a whole list of amazing attributes. But, if we’re being honest with each other, it’s because the attractions were so appealing to my kids that I didn’t have to forcefully extract the screened devices from their vice grips. In Greensboro, they handed them over willingly. Greensboro Science Center Calling this place a science center would be like calling the Mall of America a shoe store.
I spent an entire morning dining on (pretend) chocolate cake in a 1930s home, watching a three-year-old newsperson deliver televised (faux) weather reports in the Media Room, helping insulate a (miniature) house in the Construction Zone, roasting (imaginary) s’mores at the Campsite, sitting shotgun in a (model) 16-wheeler and giving standing ovations in the Our Town Theater.
Yes, the innards of the Greensboro Science Center revolve around the subject of science. But, let me tell you, it’s oh-somuch more.
Parents with little bambinos will love—make that adore—the Tot Spot, a fantastically HUGE gated and padded play area for babies ages two and younger.
The Greensboro Science Center effortlessly combines an aquarium, zoo, natural history museum, 3-D omnisphere theater, children’s play area and even a massive outdoor ropes/obstacle course. [Impressive, eh?]
And, if that isn’t enough, the museum offers this interesting concept called the Edible Schoolyard, the first of its kind in the nation. It’s within these gorgeous, lush outdoor gardens where my brood got schooled on planting, tending, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking fresh veggies straight from the ground.
Designed for lads and lasses of all ages (no, really!), The Greensboro Science Center is worth an entire day on your GSO itinerary. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Start in the gorgeous outdoor Animal Discovery Zoo where you’ll find large-scale exhibits dedicated to gibbons, lemurs, meerkats, tortoises, birds, wolves, tigers and even a petting zoo. For you stroller-pushing mommas who need to lull the little one into naptime, saunter through the zoo’s lush, wooded landscape—perfect for a shaded, afternoon walk among the wildlife. Inside the Carolina SciQuarium, come nose-to-fin with sharks, fish, stingrays, otters and—our favorite—penguins. Or, make

Celebration Station Maybe you’ve got a preschooler with a penchant for mini golf. Or, perhaps you’re the parent of a teen who’s fanatical about gocarts. Either way, Celebration Station is your jam. Go for an hour or spend the whole evening; this place is like Vegas for kids. Enter Celebration Station ready for sensory overload— complete with the ping-ping-ping of arcade games, flickering lights emitting from redemption games, the intoxicating aroma of cheese pizza and birthday fetes galore. ArtQuest at Greenhill If you’re anything like me, you’re ready to put your Pinterest fails and crafting disasters to rest once and for all—and so are your kids.
family Thankfully, ArtQuest at Greenhill provides a place where kids and their ‘rents can create art in an experimental, self-driven environment.
If you’re not up for those kinds of heart-pumping escapades, dear parent, then catch up on your tan and celeb gossip in a poolside cabana.
Kids can mold something original in the ceramics area, weave colorful strands in a giant loom, use mirrors to draw a selfportrait, put on a puppet show or even create their own book.
National Folk Festival One minute your kids are learning to hula from a traditional Hawaiian performance group. The next, they’re working up a sweat as they jam out to a lively zydeco band.
Who says art has to be stodgy? LeBauer Park If Junior’s been cooped-up in the hotel for far too long, consider burning off that pent-up energy with a jaunt through the absolutely lovely LeBauer Park, a new $10 million investment to Greensboro’s quaint downtown. The four-acre park is considered an active outdoor space with dedicated areas catering to children, families, young professionals and even dogs. The nouveau kids area, which encompasses about 20,000 square feet, isn’t a collection of your typical polyvinyl slides and clunky play structures. Nope, this place is totally different. A miniature climbing wall, kids-only repelling ropes, roller slides, sandbox and other sensory activities for the little ones stand out. If you’re there in the summertime, be sure to check out the full-scale splash park—complete with a fog feature. In the wintertime, it’ll transform into an ice skating rink. From firsthand experience, I recommend coming prepared with plenty of bribes (preferably in the form of candy). Because—trust me—prying your little cherub away from the grips of this awesome play area will require next level persuasion.
That’s the scene at the National Folk Festival, which takes over Greensboro’s downtown during an entire weekend every September. And, to call it “family-friendly,” would be an understatement. Eight stages situated around the walkable downtown churn out folk music every 30-60 minutes—totally free of charge. You’ll hear everything from Southern bluegrass and traditional New Orleans jazz to Mexican mariachi and Sudanese music and dance. Take a dance break with a walk through the NC Arts Marketplace filled with vendors showcasing their handcrafted treasures, quench your thirst with a few craft brews, nosh from local food trucks and even spend some time on a kids crafts in the dedicated family area. WHERE TO CHOW? All too often, the term “family-friendly dining” equates to fast food restaurants stacked with indoor playgrounds that practically beg for antibacterial gel or the smörgåsbord of less-than-appealing chain restaurants that offer little by way of flavor or uniqueness. So, you might imagine my jubilation upon discovering that Greensboro is not only a burgeoning culinary hot spot (with great beer), but one that accommodates families, too. Dame’s Chicken and Waffles If the very name of this place doesn’t conjure up a special kind of OMG-anticipation, then perhaps you’re a newbie to the whole chicken and waffles concept. Dame’s takes Southern fried chicken and pairs it with decadent, thickironed waffles that are delightfully smothered in a selection of sweet crème butters. Heavenly. Added bonus, they have an entire Chick-A-Dees menu for the young’uns.
Wet’n Wild Proudly accept your Mom of the Year Award as you kick off a splashtastic afternoon at Wet’n Wild waterpark. For the littlest of swimmers, Wet’n Wild doesn’t disappoint with attractions like Happy Harbor children’s activity area, SplashZone interactive play area and the kiddie wave pool on Splash Island. The waterpark also affords the most fearless of adventurers with 15+ ridiculously insane, adrenaline-thumping water slides. Experience the feeling of free falling on the aptly named Daredevil Drop, complete a pair of 360-degree spins in complete darkness on the Tunnel of Terror or race other sliders down the terrifying Riptide Run.
The Iron Hen It’s all about the farm-to-table experience at The Iron Hen, a mainstay of Greensboro’s culinary scene. And, no, I’m not referring to your kids crooning out various barnyard sounds during a rousing rendition of “Old MacDonald” whilst dining. A great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, this place adds a dash of hipster panache to old-school Southern standbys. Better still, they’ve got a kids menu appropriately called “Little Chicks Feed.” Hops Burger Bar While burgers and beer might sound like the hub’s private paradise, Hops Burger Bar ensures the whole fam can get in on the foodie fantasia. At Hops Burger Bar, it’s nearly impossible to choose one of the dozens of burgers and craft beers populating their vast menu. While they don’t have a children’s menu per say, they do offer the three main food groups of kids food: (1) chicken fingers, (2) burgers and (3) grilled cheese. PS: If you’re not ordering a basket off the “Wall of Fries,” you’ve done lost your mind. 800- 344- 2282 | 19 GS O

GREENSBORO: THE PLACE TO PLAY A Visitors Guide to Tournament Town Fun By Juli Ann Patty, Writer It’s time to leave work and worries behind and get down to some serious play. What’s your heart calling for? Whether it’s a day spent paddling a lake, bombing down some mountain biking trails or taking in some top-notch sports matches, Greensboro has everything you need to fulfill your recreational dreams. ADVENTURE WITH A PLAN In 2001, Greensboro’s leaders decided that they wanted to bring new life to its downtown, like so many other cities that had revitalized along a riverfront or other unique feature. Before jumping into the project, though, they decided to take stock of what outdoor assets the city already had. What they found was surprising: before any plan was made, the city and its surrounding suburbs already had approximately 100 miles of trails. Those trails extended toward downtown from the area’s lakes, colleges and neighborhoods, and they had been built over many years due to community demand and enthusiasm for outdoor activity. The answer about what to do downtown became obvious: connect all of those trials with a hub that would encircle downtown. The Downtown Greenway, as the project was named, is already in progress, with 3/4 of a mile of the Greenway completed in 2016. The entire four-mile trial is slated for completion by the end of 2017, but the Downtown Greenway will offer much more than just a place to walk, run and ride. “We want to tell the stories of all the communities that the Greenway connects, “says Dabney Sanders, project manager, “so the Greenway will include lots of public art, even bike racks made by local artist we/ve commissioned.” In the center of the Greenway and downtown are two of the city’s newest parks, Carolyn & Maurice LeBauer Park and Center City Park, built and managed through a public/private partnership between Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department and the nonprofit Greensboro Downtown Parks, which are also partnering to build the Greenway. LeBauer and Center City Park include an array of features that bring both Greensboro citizens and visitors together for a unique and exciting downtown experience.
GREENSBORO’S GREEN SPACES LeBauer and Center City Park are just two of Greensboro’s many parks and green spaces. Greensboro parks range from neighborhood parks, the perfect place for playing nearby, to large recreational spaces with professional staffs and a wide variety of facilities, including fishing, boating, swimming, golf, hiking, biking, disc golf, dog parks, volleyball and tennis. And, in typical Greensboro style, more outdoor activities, opportunities and facilities are being added all the time. For those looking to check out some of the city’s more than one hundred miles of trail, there’s an app for that as well.
G SO 2 2 | www.VisitGreensboroNC.com
Gateway Gardens The Greensboro Parks and Rec trail mapping tool makes it easy to find a trial in any area of the city and surround communities and to get step-by-step directions to its trailhead. Whether you’re looking for a garden trail, paved greenway, or hiking/mountain biking trails, Greensboro has your ideal place to play. There’s a whole other kind of trail in Greensboro, just a quick drive from downtown, and it’s more like a Blueway than a Greenway. The area is home to a chain of lakes and rivers that offer some of the state’s best kayaking, canoeing and fishing.
THRILL-SEEKERS TAKE NOTE Greensboro has recently added a new attraction for visitors who want a little thrill with their outdoor recreation. It’s a ropes course called SKYWILD located at the Greensboro Science Center, and it’s drawing an enthusiastic and adventurous crowd from children to adults. The courses, which include beginner, intermediate and advanced routes, all simulate movements that different animals have to make in their daily lives, but just because this ropes course is educational and located at the Science Center, don’t make the mistake of assuming its courses are just for kids. Kids do love to swing from the ropes high in the trees, but the advanced courses are physically demanding enough that most participants only do just one. When they are finish, their arms and legs are a bit wobbly, and their faces are flush with the thrill of it all. And they’re already talking about when they’re going to come back next.
outdoors SPECTATOR RECREATION If you’re looking for a sport that lets you do more of the cheering and less of the actual playing, Greensboro has that, too. The Grasshoppers, the Marlin’s Single A affiliate, play each summer at NewBridge Bank Park, while the pro Carolina Dynamo soccer team draws a devoted fanbase at Macpherson Stadium at Bryan Park every year. And in 2016, the NBA made Greensboro home of one of its new NBA D League teams. The Swarm (developmental team for the Carolina Hornets) played their first game in their new facility, the nearly 38,500 square-foot Field House, in November 2016. If golf is your thing, you can both tee off and cheer on the pros in Greensboro. Home to the Wyndham Championship, the city’s top-notch golf venues host both thrilling PGA matchups and provide opportunities for local and visiting golfers to experience their challenging and beautiful courses as well.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO PLAY? It might be a long walk through winding greenscapes, a run or bike through wooded hills or city streets, a night with a hot dog, some popcorn and good old-fashioned baseball, or something altogether different. Whatever your favorite way to play Greensboro has it, and the city is always adding more. To plan your perfect day or trip to Greensboro, visit www.VisitGreensboroNC.com

EATS. TREATS. DRINKS.
A travelers guide to some local favorites By Jason Frye, Writer Hungry in Greensboro? Thirsty? Look around, on every corner, in every section of the city there are homegrown places dishing up delicacies and pouring pints that embody the culture, community and creativity of Greensboro. Here are few places you should stop and why they need to be on your culinary roadmap. GREAT GRUB: Crafted: The Art of the Taco Tacos are transformed from the ordinary to the outstanding at Crafted: The Art of the Taco, and the emphasis here really is on Art. As in every taco on the menu is a work of art. Fish tacos, a seared tuna taco with kimchi, a falafel taco and a taco with mac n’ cheese are all on the menu, as are sweet potato “nachos,” a mason jar filled with bacon, and even a vegan burger. The décor and the crew are as hip as the menu, and don’t’ let the artsy flair fool you, the grub, the people and vibe are all as chill as chill can be. Crafted: The Art of Street Food Chef Chris Fuller’s love for tacos grew and so did her restaurant empire with the opening of Crafted: The Art of Street Food. Here she celebrates global flavors and simple dishes from around the world with an amazing— and tasty—menu. Korean meatballs, Egyptian-style shrimp skewers, ramen, Nashville Hot Wings, poutine, street corn, Thai-style pork ribs and even corndogs grace the menu that’s as vibrant as the mural and art on the walls. Pair any dish with a beer from their neighbor, Preyer Brewing, and you’ve got a winner. Sticks and Stones Pizza may be the perfect food, well, the pizza from Sticks and Stones may be, anyway. Always seeking flavorful perfection, Sticks and Stones pours pints of local and regional beers to accompany their outstanding pizzas. And they’re all about the fresh North Carolina ingredients: the flour in the dough, the greens and produce, the beef and pork, cream and butter, even eggs all come from within the state. Best of all, these quality ingredients make a pizza you’ll dream about.
the classic NY Style or with Oreo crust or with chocolate chips or like a crème brulee or swirled with blueberries or chocolaty, this is the place. Add to that a selection of layer cakes (oh, that strawberry red velvet…) and cookies and turnovers and brownies and some mighty fine coffee drinks and you have a place perfect for a quick bite in the morning or an afternoon pick-me-up. Hops Burger Bar There are burgers then there are the burgers at Hops Burger Bar. It’s as if the burger wizards in the kitchen here have decided to work on perfecting this all-American sandwich masterpiece and they’re getting closer every day. Ten burgers, a daily special and the ability to build your own means you can have a burger with almost anything on it, but if you feel bogged down by burger options, go for the Hops Classic—cheese, bacon and all the toppings—or try the North Carolinian—topped with a fried egg, applewood bacon, pimento cheese and a fried green tomato. Whatever you get, don’t forget the Wall of Fries, the selection of French fries (there are a dozen) that ranges from the simple—fries with sea salt—to the international—Poutine or Fries Cordon Bleu anyone?— each one more delicious than the last. Come thirsty, they serve some of the best local beers to go with these burgers. Scrambled Southern Diner Elevate your diner game at Scrambled, where they put a chef’s twist on diner classics. Breakfast has the usual pancakes and bacon or sunny side up options, but they also have a half-dozen benedicts—like the fried green tomato benedict or meatloaf benedict—that will make you wish for breakfast all day. Then there’s vegan chili, a lobster roll, blackened catfish and a shrimp po’boy; and don’t forget the drinks, they put a spin on the bloody mary that’ll have you coming back again and again, and the Lemon Flower brings cava, elderflower liquor and lemon together for a sweet and sour bubbly treat that was tailor made for brunch.
Maxie B’s Bakery Who knew there were such things as swank cupcakes? Robin, the owner and baker extraordinaire at Maxie B’s does. Her vision of a bakery selling outstanding treats—cakes, cookies and to-die-for cupcakes—in a chic and stylish setting is a testament to her vision and her taste buds. Any time you go in you’ll find a tempting array of cakes on stands and platters, a rack of cupcakes and mini-cupcakes that will have your stomach rumbling, and some of the sweetest people you’ll meet in Greensboro. Enjoy your cupcake—from the classic vanilla to the 19 Carat carrot cake to a lemon curd cupcake—here or on the go. Cheesecakes by Alex When cheesecake makes you pause after every bite and give thanks, you know it’s special. That’s Cheesecakes by Alex. There are 20 flavors available on a daily basis, so whether you like your cheesecake in

cheers Smith Street Diner
Sometimes you want to keep it simple, and that’s what they do at Smith Street Diner. This spot is a diner, plain and simple, so when you need two over easy with toast and hash browns to start your day, this is the spot. Or when you decide you need some comfort food in the form of meatloaf or a country-fried steak, they have got you covered. And when what you really need is a straight up cheeseburger that will send you on your way satisfied, what you need is their signature Smith Street Burger. THE PERFECT PINT: Natty Greene’s Brewing Company Named for Greensboro’s namesake, Nathanael Greene—he’s the fellow on the label—Natty Greene’s has been pouring pints of craft beer since 2004 and they just keep getting better. At their downtown location grab a burger to go with your pint or just sit and sip, there’s plenty to chose from on their beer and food menu. Their Buckshot Amber Ale is a crowd pleaser and the Mount Mitchell Single-Hop IPA shows off the best of one hop varietal. Every season their annual releases match perfectly the weather and activities, so cool off with the Freedom American IPA, get a taste for fall with the Thicket Autumn IPA or open up the new year with an Old Town Brown Ale. They’ve broken into sours with some delicious inaugural selections like the Wooden Ladder Kriek (that’s cherry) and the Flanders-inspired American Sour that’s true to style and tasty as the day is long.
impresses with a broad range of styles and flavors. IPAs from west-coast style to a hoppy double IPA to an experimental IPA-sour hybrid will make hop-lovers rethink their current favorite. Their porters, stouts and brown ales throw a curveball in the darker beer game, brining in new and unexpected flavors and malt-hop mixes to create brews that get more complex with every drink. And their wheat and rye ales are completely unexpected in their subtlety and layers of flavors. If you’re hungry, or just want something to perfectly pair with you pint, Crafted: The Art of Street Food is right next door. Gibbs Hundred Brewing Co. Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to Greensboro beer, and Gibbs Hundred rounds out the town’s offerings with some intriguing pints. With a dozen recipes in rotation, they play with the IPA, experiment with combinations of hops and malts giving them a range from the smooth and sweet signature Blind Man’s Holiday Greensboro Pale Ale to the hoppy and aromatic Hypothesis of Failure IPA. Their on-draft offerings also include a silky and spicy Saison, a milk stout that’s sippable in any season, a lemony blond that begs for warm weather, and a Berlinerweisse that’s a fun take on this traditional German style. Throw in food trucks making an appearance nearly every night of the week and a taproom that’s energetic and friendly and you’ve got an ideal spot to spend the evening.
Pig Pounder Brewery Authentic UK-style beers reign supreme at Pig Pounder Brewery. They pour eight year-round brews and six seasonals at Pig Pounder, and there’s not a bad one in the bunch. Try the ESP—Extra Special Pig, their take on the classic English ESB—for a balanced pint of malty, hoppy goodness. Their Snout Stout is a spin on the milk stout, and it packs in plenty of chocolate and coffee flavors. The Golden Gilt, a take on Kolsch, and Swinestein, a Belgian-style Wit, stretch beyond the UK onto the European continent, demonstrates their range. The taproom is fun and interactive, and the bar staff are happy to pour tastes and flights and chat about the styles and the Pig Pounder take on each. Joymongers Brewing Co. Joymonger’s philosophy is simple: Spreading Joy One Pint at a Time. When you walk in, it’s hard to say what will put a bigger smile on your face, the dozen plus beers on tap or the friendly, fun vibe. They pour their take on some taproom standards—IPAs, brown and American pale ales, goldens and some session IPAs— but then they go above and beyond, brewing unusual styles like the Plum Grisette, the Hefetrit and their series of table beers (think saisons but not so strong). Ask for a taste of anything and you’ll get it, ask for a pint of anything and you love it. Love it so much you want to bring it home with you? Not a problem thanks to their crowler—think can + growler—machine, you can enjoy a glass or two anytime, anywhere. Preyer Brewing Co. Just across the street from NewBridge Bank Park, home field of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Preyer Brewing is both a game day must-visit and an anytimeyou-need-a-beer watering hole. Their lineup of brews
Crafted: The Art of the Taco
SMOOTH SIPPING: Fainting Goat Spirits Greensboro’s only craft distiller has a funny name but what they put in the bottle is no laughing matter. Fainting Goat’s gin, vodka, single-malt whiskey, rye whiskey and bourbon are distilled using 100% USDA certified organic grains that were North Carolinagrown. Their gin, a balance of floral and herbal notes, not without that signature juniper sting, works neat or in a cocktail; and their vodka is a smooth sipper that finishes with a big bite at the end. As for their whiskeys, their rye packs in plenty of spice, the single-malt whiskey will have a permanent home in your bottle collection, and their bourbon tastes like it was born in Kentucky but grew up here in Greensboro. 800- 344- 2282 | 31 GS O
