Welcome! to the seventeenth annual edition of The Upper Valley Guide to Holistic Health Services. Complementary and alternative, now mainstream terms, place these health care modalities in relation to allopathic medicine rather than standing on their own as they have for millennia. Holistic Health better defines the guiding principles of the healing modalities represented in this Guide—those which address the whole person rather than separate parts and take into consideration the body, mind and spirit. It is exciting to have so many practitioners and businesses in our area working with natural, holistic therapies and approaches to health care. While it might be easy to become overwhelmed by all the different categories and techniques, please bear in mind that they all have common threads, which include: working with the body, mind and spirit as a whole being; viewing the whole as an energetic being and doing work that harmonizes and balances that energy; and emphasizing the use of natural, non-invasive therapies. The goal of this guide is to be comprehensive— including as many practitioners and businesses as possible—so it is a useful tool for those searching out holistic health care. It is a joy to compile this guide and learn more about all the work being done in the Upper Valley. However, it must be clear that no endorsement of therapies, practitioners, products or businesses is intended or implied by inclusion in this guide. No unethical or misleading listings or ads have been knowingly included. Definitions of services are for educational purposes only. ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is a healing art that has been used in China for thousands of years. An acupuncturist diagnoses and treats the body based on the theory that our body and life processes are a unified system of energetic relationships. Central to this energetic theory is the concept of Qi (“chee”)—the basic life force. Qi flows through specific pathways in the body called meridians. These meridians and their numerous branches form an energetic network which traverses the entire body and joins together all of its organ systems. Along each meridian’s course, near the surface of the body, are points at which the Qi is most accessible for stimulation. To stimulate these points, thin, sterile needles are inserted at specific points determined by the acupuncturist’s examination and diagnosis. When Qi—the life force—is blocked or out of balance, diseases and disorders develop. The purpose of acupuncture is to move and balance the Qi, thus restoring health and harmony in the body.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE The Alexander Technique is an educational method used worldwide for over 100 years. By teaching how to change faulty postural habits, it enables improved mobility, posture, performance and alertness along with relief of chronic stiffness, pain, tension and stress. Athletes, singers, dancers, and musicians use the Technique to improve breathing, vocal production, and speed and accuracy of movement. The most far-reaching reason people study the Technique is to achieve greater conscious control of their reac-

At our Holistic Integrative Practice we offer a wide range of treatment options to improve the quality of life for our patients: homeopathy & homotoxicology, herbal remedies & Bach Flowers, glandulars & nutritional guidance, veterinary orthopedic manipulation, bioresonance, and conventional medicine & surgery.

APITHERAPY Apitherapy involves the use of bee stings, pollen, propolis and royal jelly to treat such diseases as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and others. It is a therapy you practice on yourself or with the help of a friend (who’s not afraid of or allergic to bees). Information is available on-line at the American Apitherapy Society—www.apitherapy.org. If you’re not ready to set up a hive of your own, you can usually find a local beekeeper who is willing to supply you with bees for a fee, which varies depending upon the beekeeper. Bees in a jar usually last about one week to ten days. If after you try it you feel it’s effective, it makes sense to invest in a hive of your own.

AROMATHERAPY Aromatherapy involves the use of fragrances from pure essential oils of plants. Essential oils are the hormones and concentrated active ingredients of plants and they can effect our moods, minds, bodies and healing. Japanese studies have shown that different fragrances produce different brain wave patterns—some are calming, some are stimulating, relaxing, etc.

ASTROLOGY Astrology is an ancient art which analyzes the energetic qualities of a particular day or period of time. Birth charts provide insight into a person’s character and soul path. Astrologers use the position of the planets at significant times to advise clients on the best way to move through periods of challenge, growth, and opportunity.

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE Ayurveda means the “Science of Life” and is a comprehensive medical system. It originated in ancient India and is one of the oldest medical systems in the world, dating back thousands of years. It has common themes with Chinese/Oriental medicine systems, including working with the life force/energy (prana in Ayurveda, Chi/Qi in Chinese). It includes working with different body and personality temperments called doshas, which are similar to more modern metabolic typing and blood type systems.

BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE Biological medicine looks at and treats the individual person, not a specific disease or diagnosis. It is a very comprehensive, wholistic approach which involves a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment techniques, including dentistry. These address the inner biochemical environment of the individual, as well as structural, energetic and emotional aspects. Dysfunction or disease is multicausal. Assessment and treatment focus on understanding and changing the toxic load, blockages, deficiencies, and physiological and mental stresses that the body is trying to cope with. See Web Resources on page 34.

BODYWORK (Also see MASSAGE THERAPY)—Bodywork is a broad term covering many different techniques of physical touch and manipulation. Sometimes traditional massage is used in conjunction with one or more of these techniques.

BODYWORK—Biodynamic Alignment Therapy Biodynamic Alignment Therapy is a personalized health and balance treatment based on traditional osteopathic philosophies and techniques. It embraces the osteopathic philosophy that the body has a natural ability to self-regulate and heal itself. To empower this ability, the body must have an unrestricted circulation of fluids including the blood, lymph and digestive juices. The focus of Biodynamic Alignment Therapy is the identification and treatment of physical and/or emotional obstructions that impede the circulation of fluids.

BODYWORK—CranioSacral CranioSacral therapy involves gentle, subtle hands-on work to balance the system of membranes connecting the cranium and sacrum bones and the cerebrospinal fluid which bathes the brain and spinal cord. Imbalances in this area can effect the central nervous system. There are different schools of this therapy—the Fluid Model Sutherland Sills Craniosacral Therapy, Osteopathic Craniosacral Therapy, and Upledger CranioSacral Therapy. The Fluid Model and Osteopathic Therapies are similar, but only doctors can practice Osteopathic Craniosacral Therapy.

BODYWORK— Structural Integration: Rolfing® and KMI™ There are different types of body work called structural integration. One of these is Rolfing®, a specific kind of structural integration technique which involves hands on therapy to lengthen and loosen—stretching and moving the connective tissue to balance the body along its natural, vertical axis. Another type is called KMI™ taught by Thomas Myers, a Rolfer® who developed a theory of Anatomy Trains or myofascial meridians which focuses not on individual muscles but on the connections of muscles and tissues within and across the body.

COLON HYGIENE Colon Hygiene includes Colon Hydrotherapy, also known as Colonics, which uses special equipment to bathe, flush and cleanse the colon/large intestine. It washes away old, toxic, fecal matter, helping the body with detoxification and cleansing. There are two types of Colon therapy techniques and machines. One uses a pressurized water system. The other uses a gravity, natural flow water system. A colonic session usually takes from 30 to 60 minutes. Also see DETOXIFICATION.

DENTAL CARE Biological Dentistry emphasizes the use of nontoxic restoration (filling) materials for dental work, with a particular emphasis on not using silver/ mercury amalgam fillings. It also takes into consi deration the impact that dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on overall health. Mercury has been recognized as a poison for hundreds of years and in 1988 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared scrap dental amalgam a hazardous waste, requiring special handling and disposal. In early 1992, Germany banned the manufacture and sale of amalgams and in Sweden a ban is pending and the government pays 50% of the cost of removal of amalgam fillings. While mercury amalgam fillings are still quite common in the U.S., there are dentists who understand the health implications and have stopped using them. The book, Whole Body Dentistry, by Mark Breiner, DDS is an excellent resource.

DETOXIFICATION Detoxification is generally used to describe a group of therapies and approaches that help cleanse the body, reduce toxins in the body and help the organs of elimination (skin, lungs, liver, kidneys, bowels) to work more efficiently and effectively. Detox therapies include cleansing diets, nutritional supplements & other cleansing and draining herbs and remedies, saunas, foot baths, whole body and colon hydrotherapy, bodywork, infusions, chelation and oxygen therapies. See also COLON HYGIENE.

FAMILY MEDICINE Also see NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE and HOLISTIC MEDICAL DOCTORS—these days of ever-increasing medical specialists, it is rare to find a doctor (M.D.) in general family practice. A Family Medicine doctor is one who serves the general needs of the whole family and takes into consideration emotional and lifestyle concerns, as well as physical. And, as is the case with the category in this guide, one who is also open to using a noninterventive approach and natural therapies—keeping prescription drugs to a minimum.

HOMEOPATHY Homeopathy is a specific healing system in which minute doses of specially prepared natural remedies are used to trigger a healing response in an individual. A homeopath prescribes a remedy based on the pattern of symptoms with which a person presents. Homeopathic remedies can be used for a wide range of conditions, from acute illness and injury to complicated chronic conditions. This therapeutic approach was developed over 200 years ago by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, and it remains in wide use throughout the world.

LYMPH DRAINAGE Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) can prove beneficial in the correction of numerous conditions and be a useful tool in preventive health maintenance due to the nature of the lymphatic system and its role in the body. LDT works to activate fluid circulation and stimulate the functioning of the immune system and parasym pathetic nervous system. Some of the conditions for which it is effective include: edema or swelling and lymphedema, detoxifi cation of the body, regenerations of tissue (including burns and scars), venous conditions and chronic inflammation and pain. It is also effective for deep relaxation and stress relief.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE Naturopathic medic ine treats health conditions by utilizing the body’s inherent ability to heal. It involves a variety of therapies including diet, herbs, homeopathy, hydrotherapy and more. There are six basic principles to Naturopathic medicine: to work with the healing power of nature; to treat the cause rather than the effect; to first, do no harm; to treat the whole person; to have the physician be a teacher; and that prevention is the best cure. The Naturopathic doctors in the Upper Valley all practice Family Medicine/Whole Family care.
