The history of Greenwich House Music School stretches back to 1905, when we were founded in the settlement tradition with a mission to provide arts and cultural programs to help our community expand experiences and help individuals lead more fulfilling lives. The goal at GHMS is to teach students the beauty and transformative power of music, art and dance and make them lifelong lovers of the arts. GHMS serves the community through diverse programs, including private and group instruction in piano, violin, cello, viola, woodwinds, brass, guitar, drums, harp and voice, as well as early childhood programs in dance, visual arts and movement. The school is proud to offer over $50,000 each year in financial aid for students based on merit and need.

Pre-Twinkle thru Book 1 Ages 3½ and up A method for instruction and a philosophy based on the belief that all children are innately talented. Pieces are learned by ear and played from memory. Note reading is incorporated later on in the child’s training, when they begin to read words. Parent, teacher and child are all active participants in the learning process; parents or caregivers must be willing to attend lessons. In addition to individual lessons, young Suzuki students are required to attend a repertoire class to strengthen their musicality and ensemble playing skills.

Movement for Adults Yoga
Fridays 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. $300 per trimester/$25 per drop-in class GHMS ballet instructor Julie Granger is a RYT-200 yoga instructor who graduated from the Pure Yoga teacher training program. She teaches a Vinyasa flow class, including elements of her training in Anusara, Hatha, Yin and Restorative. Classes feature an emphasis on alignment, purity and quality of movement, as well as injury prevention.
Student Recitals We encourage students to participate in recitals, held monthly on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. for senior students and Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. for junior students. The Annual Junior and Senior Honors Recitals in May feature students who have demonstrated exceptional progress over the course of the year. All recitals take place in the Renee Weiler Concert Hall at Greenwich House Music School.

Financial Aid
Register online at greenwichhouse.org/music, in person, or by phone at 212-242-4770, Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classes are divided into three 12-week terms with an additional 6-week summer term.
In keeping with long-standing tradition, GHMS grants financial aid on the basis of both need and merit. Students are eligible for financial aid after having studied at the school for one full year. An application for financial aid must be submitted by July 15. Notification is made before the first week of classes.
Payments
Absence
Annual non-refundable registration fee: $25 per individual, $30 per family. Greenwich House accepts cash, checks and credit cards. There is a return check fee of $35.
There is no refund of tuition for student absence. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson or substitute teacher will be arranged. If the instructor is not able to offer a make-up class, the school will issue a credit to the student.
Students may enroll for lessons and classes, as space and schedules permit, at any time during the year. Tuition will be prorated if registering after the first week.
Withdrawal
If a student withdraws before the end of the fourth week of the current term, he/ she will be charged for the lessons taken, plus two additional lessons. No refund will be made after the fourth week. GHMS reserves the right to discontinue any student who falls behind in his/her payments, has three unexcused absences for the term or is consistently tardy. Any student who shows a lack of interest, behaves in a rude or abusive fashion, or does not demonstrate active progress in their studies according to the teacher’s assessment may have their lessons discontinued.

Music School Concerts and Events Uncharted
Uncharted is GHMS’s very own annual spring concert series featuring high-profile local artists debuting first-time performances of new work or new collaborations. Uncharted covers a broad selection of genres, from jazz to R&B, folk to pop, theater to world music. Highlights from the 2015 season included a performance by legendary guitartist Marc Ribot with special guest Emeline Michel (left).
Sound it Out
Sound It Out, founded by series curator Bradley Bambarger in June 2012, continues GHMS’s tradition as a focal point of the downtown arts scene. The series hosts musicians from jazz and other venturesome genres, that further bind the School with the progressive scenes across New York City.
Caffè Vivaldi
Caffè Vivaldi is a cultural institution for New Yorkers and creative people from all over the world. The partnership between GHMS and Caffè Vivaldi brings popular artists to the Village while keeping the original spirit of the Caffè alive. Practice Rooms
14 practice rooms are available for rental at $10 an hour, with a one-time registration fee of $25. All rooms have pianos. Rooms are available on a firstcome, first-served basis, with a minimum room rental of one hour. Practice rooms are generally open from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Evening availability is contingent on live performances in the Renee Weiler Concert Hall.
Conference Room
20’ x 14’ A large and open space, our conference room has seating available for 10 – 14 people, and is an ideal setting for local business or community group meetings. Adjacent to our double-wide brownstone’s patio garden, this space is also perfect for artist receptions pre- or post-concert.

36’ x 24’ With beautiful flowering cherry and dogwood trees shading the original brick patio, and plenty of space, the backyard garden is available for receptions, cocktail parties, and small open-air concerts. This picturesque outdoor space has a seating capacity of up to 70, or can welcome up to 120 for a cocktail reception. The garden is also perfect for children’s birthday parties. Parents with children enrolled in any of our programs receive a 50% discount on rental fees. The garden can be rented separately or in conjunction with the Renee Weiler Concert Hall for an additional fee.
20’ x 15’ Stage Present your concert, reading or event in the Renee Weiler Concert Hall, located on the 2nd floor of GHMS. With a 20’ wide x 15’ deep stage that contains two Steinway Model B pianos and seating for up to 74 guests, the hall combines excellent acoustics with an intimate atmosphere to accommodate all forms of artistic expression. Green room with bathroom, modest lighting and sound are available with rental.

With a long history of providing arts programming to New Yorkers, Summer Arts Camp at Greenwich House provides young people, ages 7-14, access to different artistic movements to help them develop their own visual voice. Students work on collaborative and individual projects in disciplines such as architecture, painting and drawing, cartoon art, ceramics, printmaking and animation. All levels are welcome; the only requirement is an interest in the arts! Throughout camp, weather permitting, campers also take field trips to movie theaters, museums, galleries, parks and neighborhood attractions, including a weekly pool trip. Counselor-in-Training Program
Our eldest group of campers, aged 13 and 14, can work more independently from the younger campers, engage in in-depth art projects, and participate in counselor training workshops to learn how to supervise young campers. The CIT program requires maturity, encourages independence and provides an enviornment for growth and selfdiscovery. As space is limited, interested teens are required to apply for this program.

Parents deserve a night off, but kids look forward to a Friday night full of fun! Kids, grades K-5 can enjoy spending a Friday night at Greenwich House. Kids will be grouped by age for an evening of crafts, games and pizza. Friday Night Fun is $30 and runs from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Visit our website for program dates.
For those parents who may need childcare support during school holidays, Greenwich House offers Holiday Camps which run concurrent with most New York City Department of Education holidays including Rosh Hashanah, Veterans Day and Winter and Spring Recess.
Greenwich House Girls Basketball is a non-competitive league that gives young women a chance to have fun while enhancing self-esteem, teaching them to win and lose gracefully, working well with others and instilling the discipline to faithfully attend practices as well as games.
Weekend Workshops
Holiday Camps combine Greenwich House’s signature arts curriculum with structured games, sports and field trips (during longer holiday breaks). Running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an option for Extended Day, children have the opportunity for in-depth exploration of different artistic mediums. Each Holiday Camp is $75 per day.
No experience is necessary as our volunteer coaches, who have a love for basketball, are hands-on in teaching the fundamentals of the sport. All participants receive a team trophy at the end of the season. Players also benefit from an annual clinic run by the Columbia University Women’s Basketball Team.

Gamecraft
Transform a video game into a real life board game. In the six-session Saturday workshop students will delve into the logic behind the popular computer game Minecraft using the 3D printer to create their own game board and working with advanced 3D design software to create the intricate pieces needed to replicate video game mechanics for real world play. At the end of the workshop students will have their own personalized game to take home. Space is limited to six students. Gamecraft is $325 per child.

Greenwich House Pottery is the oldest non-profit studio in the country dedicated to the inquiry and advancement of the ceramic arts. An internationally recognized center that offers a diverse range of classes, exhibitions, residencies, lectures, master workshops and community outreach, the Pottery’s goal is to meet the needs of newcomers, amateurs and professional artists alike. Founded in 1909, its unique history encompasses the evolution of American Ceramics. With roots as a craft program in a Greenwich Village settlement house, the Pottery quickly became a hub of the post-war studio crafts movement and is today a vital center for art and inquiry.

Incentives
The Regular: Sign up for Fall, Winter and Spring 12-week classes, or any three 12-week classes, all at once and receive a $100 firing credit. The Devotee: Sign up for two 12-week classes in one term and receive a $50 firing credit. The Enthusiast: Sign up for one 12-week class and one special topics course in one term and receive a $25 firing credit. Refer a Friend: Get a friend who has not previously taken classes at the pottery to sign up for a 6 or 12-week class and receive a $75 firing credit. Plus, your friend will receive a $50 firing credit.
Financial Aid
The Pottery offers financial aid for children and adults. Applications (available online on the Resources page) must be submitted every term: Fall: September 1, 2015 Winter: December 4, 2015 Spring: March 8, 2016 Summer: June 10, 2016
Refunds, Reimbursement and Transfers
All requests for refunds must be made in writing. For a 100% refund, requests must be received one week prior to the start of class. Written requests received less than one week and at least one day prior to the first class will receive a 75% refund. Written requests received at least one day prior to the second class will receive a 50% refund. After the second day of class no refunds will be issued. Refunds are subject to a $25 administration fee. Refunds for special workshops and events must be received three weeks prior to the event. Students enrolled in 12-week classes are permitted to transfer to another 12-week class within the same term up to the second week of class. Students enrolled in 6-week classes are permitted to transfer to another 6-week class prior to the second class within the same session (subject to instructor approval). Transfers to alternate terms or sessions are subject to refunds and registration policies. Visit the website for complete guidlines. Classes with inadequate enrollment will be cancelled and students will be issued a refund or have the option to transfer to another class.

Greenwich House accepts cash, checks, and credit cards. There is a returned check fee of $35.
There is no refund or credit for student absence. If a teacher is absent, a make-up lesson or substitute teacher will be arranged.

The Pottery features two handbuilding studios, two wheel-throwing studios, a mold-making and slip-casting studio, 28 potter’s wheels, two gas kilns, five electric kilns, two slab rollers, two extruders, two clay mixers, three deairing pug mills and a spray booth. Five clay bodies are available: white stoneware, throwing stoneware, sculpture stoneware, red earthenware and 25-pound bags of porcelain can be purchased at the Pottery. GHP has a large selection of high and low temperature glazes, slips and washes and offers low, mid and high temperature firings.
Firing Policy
Firing charges are 5 cents per cubic inch for two firings, or 2.5 cents per cubic inch for a single fire. There is a $1 minimum charge on all pieces, including singlefired work (i.e., stacked greenware). GHP offers incremental discounts for individual pieces that cost over $10 to fire. For pieces over $10: 10% discount of the amount in excess of $10 For pieces over $50: 25% discount of the amount in excess of $10 For pieces over $100: 35% discount of the amount in excess of $50
Open Studio
Open Studio is an exclusive benefit for our currently enrolled students. On occasion, Open Studio may be cancelled for special classes, projects or functions. The GHP residency fosters an artist’s development by providing time and space in the center of the art world, culminating with an exhibition of works produced by the artist during their residency. The resident has access to a large studio during the Pottery’s business hours, uuse of gas and electric kilns and a firing stipend. This residency is partially supported by the Allan Buitekant Fund for Ceramic Art and Inquiry.
The GHP internship program offers high school, college and graduate students short-term work experience in studio operations and arts administration.
