TAKE FIRST STEP HERE

GREENWICH is a world-leading dance centre and was the place where legend Matthew Bourne learned his craft. And you can learn too. Trimity Laban offers dance classes – taught by professionals – this autumn. There’s a new general-level Jazz class where you can learn routines to the chart-topping music to get fit and have fun. Other classes range from ballet to yoga and pilates, street dance, contemporary dance and hip hop – all at a variety of levels to cater for different abilities. “Our adult classes are taught by some of the industry’s leading practitioners and offer a perfect antidote to a day sat at a desk or time-out from a busy lifestyle,” it says. “And who wouldn’t want to take classes at Matthew Bourne’s alma matter?” Courses renew every six weeks but bookings can be accepted between if there’s space. And there are pay-on-the-day courses. Info: www.trinitylaban.ac.uk

THERE’S an extra incentive to try archery in Greenwich this month – you can put an arrow right between the eyes of evil Warcraft villain Gul’dan. Indoor club Archery Fit has teamed up with Universal Pictures as the new blockbuster movie launches. There are Warcraft-themed giveaways as fans who fancy themselves as the next leader of either the Alliance or the Horde can put their archery skills to the test. Archery Fit, based in Merryweather Place, just off Greenwich High Road, has two world championship standard ranges and is open seven days a week. The new movie – based on the classic video game series – is directed by Duncak Jones, son of David Bowie, and stars Greenwich actor Dominic Cooper. Info: www.archeryfit.com

The huge outdoor family food and music festival finally had its first downpour which made for a subdued Day One atmosphere... although it was easy for fans of Roisin Murphy, Hot Chip and Primal Scream to find a spot near the stage, writes MATT CLARK. Day Two was a scorcher...and the festival feel was back, with thousands partying to fine bands and fine food – eating it or watching star chefs in action on the John Lewis stage – and their youngsters enjoying children’s activities. South East London legends Squeeze never fail to please – playing crowd-pleasing classics or beloved covers they feel fresh and invigorating as the New Wave they surfed in the late 70s (which so many of the family crowd recall with affection). Glenn Tilbrook’s voice is still a wonder – and when they invited Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir back to join

Day was the perfect collaboration. “Do you think they’ll help me with a new hip?” deadpanned Chris Difford. Magic! Next up were James – with charismatic frontman Tim Booth in crowdpleasing, crowdsurfing mood. Their catalogue of quirky anthems should perhaps have seen them top the bill. Instead the honour went to cerebral Scots Belle & Sebastian, who performed their best party pieces but were more for afficionadoes than the general festival crowd. Highlights of the Heavenly tent were an inspiring performance from Edwyn Collins and a hit-packed session from Saint Etienne. Food fans had a feast of fun, writes SOLANGE BERCHEMIN. And so did the chefs. Hemsley & Hemsley told me: “This year, we were asked to pick one festival only and we chose OnBlackheath. We love the organisation,

the crowd is fantastic and the location amazing.” Ping Coombes brought her family too. “My daughter has been running around all afternoon, trying all sorts of activities.” Noise is, understandably, an issue for many locals – it was one of the reasons groups like the Blackheath Society campaigned against a Festival. This year Saturday’s music could be heard across the area. The Society says it is liaising with Lewisham Council. But festival organisers said they were delighted and were looking forward to a new chapter. Terry Felgate, one of the team who fought to hold the first event in 2014, said: “In our third year we were able to offer the most complete and cohesive content line up yet, across all areas. This was the closest we’d come to fully realising the vision that Tom, Alex, and I set out some six years ago. “Our contract with (promoter) Harvey Goldsmith’s company has come to an end so we’re exploring new options. Watch this space...but OnBlackeath will return in 2017.”

Rising star at Albany’s relaunch THE Albany relaunched its theatre space after a summer revamp with a party featuring stars of the future - absolutely appropriate for this cutting-edge organisation. The biggest star, of course, was the performance area itself, which is now free of intrusive columns, is decked out with comfortable seating, has better access to the bar and boasts sparkling new loos - facilities never to be underestimated. Two works in progress kicked off the party, which was officially launched by former Deptford MP Dame Joan Ruddock, who has taken over from Claire Pritchard as chair of the Albany Board. Adam Kammerling, Eric Mitchell-Johnson and Jacob Smart combined rap, dance and acrobatics for a fascinating piece called Shall We Take This Outside before Eleni Edipidi and

Bethanie Harrison gave us The Band, a dazzling cocktail of mime, comedy and choreography. They were followed by former Albany employee Kimberly Anne, a singer-songwriter with a brilliant gift for engaging with an audience, who played a marvellous set with guitarist Rhiannon Mair. And they were joined on stage by Jay Johnson, for whom this gig was a homecoming because he is one of the youngsters who has benefited from the Albany’s Young Creatives programme. I saw him a couple of months ago at the Maverick festival in Suffolk and was struck by his originality and virtuosity. His performance at the Albany reinforced that reputation - and leaves me convinced we will hear much more of him in the coming years.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Is there a more loved novel in the whole English-speaking literary canon? MISS JULIE

Faultess debuts

MISS Julie is a tough ask for even the most experienced actors, so you’d think rookies would be overwhelmed by August Strindberg’s intimate, furious class war tragedy. Yet incredibly all three roles in the latest production of this Swedish classic at the London Theatre in New Cross featured youngsters making their professional debuts, two of them having completed one of the acting courses run by this great little venue. Shereener Browne, Robert Eadon and Selwaj Jghalef barely faltered as they mined the darkest corners of their characters’ souls. In fact, it became almost impossible to believe the trio hadn’t been treading the boards for years. The title role, with its tricky balance between aristocratic arrogance and desperate desire, was neatly played by Browne, whose rage and tears were equally affecting. Eadon, as her valet/lover Jean, needed to show an ounce or two more compassion to explain just why his boss found him so irresistible. But he absolutely nailed the manipulative and gleeful sense of power of a working class man seduced by a beautiful toff. And Jghalef was terrific as Kristine, Miss Julie’s cook and Jean’s put-upon fiancee, capturing first her heartbroken resignation at Jean’s callousness and finally her outrage at the cheating lovers. I’ve seen some big, big names come to grief in this play in the past. It’s a tribute to the skill of these three newcomers and director Harry Denford that the only grief they caused here was the suicidal despair Strindberg meant us to see.

Protests save Blackheath Post Office from tacky revamp as it becomes a WH Smith IT’S A STICKER UP: Post Office windows covered with ads

QUITE A COME DOWN: Ads are removed after residents’ protests

A “TACKY” revamp of Blackheath’s Edwardian Post Office has been overturned by public protest.

The building – built in 1911 and designed by architect John Rutherford – is now a WH Smith Local. It has lost its row of counters to a single booth and the original oak doors have been replaced with sliding glass panels. But it was the boarding up of its seven splendid sash windows – which were then covered with advertising stickers – which caused the biggest protest. The Blackheath Society – which works to retain the area’s village feel – wrote to councillors

calling the new look “grossly out of keeping with the architecture of the building and the general atmosphere of the Village.” The Society says it has received complaints about the “unfortunate development” and adds: “It seems extraordinary that there was no prior consultation before such far-reaching

changes were made. We would be interested to know if any form of permission was given.” On Twitter @catdeans said: “This is horrific! From our lush little village Post Office to this monstrosity!” @livesinselondon said: “Mortified at your dreadful makeover.” And days later the

stickers were peeled off. Local councillor Kevin Bonavia Tweeted: “Thanks to @PostOffice for quick response & removing window hoardings. Now for a touch of paint!” WH Smith would not comment but it is understood that the refit was not carried out by them. Info: www.blackheath.org

From Saturday October 29 to Sunday November 20 there will be fabulous theatre, live music, singalongs, dancing, heritage walks, author talks, art, craft, festival food and much more – all showcasing the SE9 area’s creative talent, writes REEVA CHARLES. Eltham Arts Winter Festival founder Gaynor Wingham said: “Last years’s festival was so popular, with thousands of people taking part or supporting us last year and it’s incredibly exciting to be holding our second Winter Festival.

Eltham Arts aims to bring the community together through the arts and there is no better example of this happening than at the Winter Festival.” The fabulous array of over 150 events over 23 days offers something for everyone – adults, families and children – and many events are free. There are shows at the Bob Hope Theatre, music concerts from opera to folk and Jazz, heritage walks and talks and art exhibitions. There will be an Art Trail, another Song Challenge and, for the first time, Festival Foodie Events. The Festival kicks off with the Festival Opening event on 29 October featuring a day of live entertainment and

kids’ activities in the heart of Eltham high street in Passey Place where you can also find out what’s going on. Another highlight is Eltham Lights Up – the colourful Christmas lantern parade and live entertainment – on November 17 in Eltham High Street. And it all wraps up with a celebratory Festival Finale event at the White Hart on November 20. Read all about the Festival – and how you can get involved – in this special Greenwich Visitor pull-out programme, which has a map and full listings. For updates visit the Eltham Arts website www.elthamarts.org or follow on Twitter and Facebook using hashtag #ElthamWinFest2016. Enjoy!

CREEP UP CASTLE STEPS

SEVERNDROOG Castle has breathtaking views...and a haunting history. The 18th Century tower in Oxleas Woods holds an after-dark opening on October 31 – Halloween night. You’ll love the creaky climb to the top. Info: www.severndroogcastle.org.uk. There’s more Halloween fun at the GPO pub where there’s a prize for the best Halloween-themed act on its Sunday Open Mic on October 30.

TIME TO GET ART & ABOUT ART abounds in Eltham where we have great and unique gallery space that will host Winter Festival events. Two schools have their own galleries: SE9 Container Gallery – made from former sea containers (below) – and Gerald Moore Gallery at Eltham College. And a new commercial space Capital Art Gallery opened last year in Well Hall Parade. There are Open Houses with glass artist Jean Bright in Heatherbank and artist and ceramicist Sylvia Stevens in Glenhouse Road. You can try painting and art too, with events for all ages. And you should spot displays of local art and photography in shop windows and cafés around Eltham High Street which are part of the unique Art Trail. You can’t miss us!

MADRIGALS IN A TUDOR Madrigals will again be heard in the Great Mediaeval Hall at Eltham Palace during the Winter Festival. The wonderful Grove Singers have devised a programme of unaccompanied choral music on the theme of King Henry VIII, who spent some of his childhood in Eltham Palace. The performances are in two parts, on Sunday October 30 at 1.30pm and 2.30pm If you are not an English Heritage Member, take advantage of the half price entry for Greenwich residents on Sundays during the Winter Festival, when Eltham Palace is open.

Food & music FOOD is creative too! And to celebrate our diverse and wonderful local community there are festival foodie events from around the world. All About Taste – the independent coffee shop with lovely cakes and coffee in the daytime – has a Taste of Europe evening on November 4, with European Platters, writes REEVA CHARLES. And you can bring your own wine! The Nepalese community holds Taste of Nepal at Age UK Bromley & Greenwich on November 3, which includes a Chutney Challenge. Diwali falls within our Festival and so there’s a Taste of India event on November 5. There is Ready Steady Cook event on November 3. Some restaurants are featuring special Festival Menus. And Kevin Godby – our wonderful local forager – follows his Gardening Talk on

DIWALI DISHES, PLANTS & PUB SINGALONGS!

November 15 with A Walk for All Seasons from Eltham Station to Eltham Park South on November 16, identifying edible plants. The Long Pond – the much loved micropub which opened in 2014 in a previously “dry” area – is partnering with the event a second time with a special Beer Festival. It has a Traditional Pub Singalong around a vintage piano on November 1 with popular local pairing Pytchwood. And on November 15 it celebrates Songs of the Shows with Dangerous Dan Jenkins. Entry

TOMAS PROMISES PENINSULA SURPRISES I WAS impressed with the dining possibilities at the new Intercontinental Hotel at North Greenwich. The elegant new Peninsula Hotel has particularly fine views of the Thames and glittering Canary Wharf outside now has a new Head Chef – Tomas Lidakevicius. And, appropriately, Tomas says his menu is inspired by our historic Martime setting, with spices, exotic fruit and fresh fish – just like the

T won’t just be popcorn on offer at Eltham’s new cinema when it opens in late 2018. Pizza Express will be at the Vue Cinema, alongside Nando’s. The chains are coming... ublic houses have a had a hard time over the last couple of decades, with closures, new laws and tax rises. But are things looking up? Deptford has acquired a new pub, The Brookmill on Cranbrook Road. Sister to the Great North Wood in West Norwood, the Brookmill promises gastro food and beers in a cosy environment. Check it out and let us know. he Bugle Horn Pub in Charlton has re-opened after a £305,000 refresh and is promising a “quality community pub offering great service, a homely setting and a great range of ales, wines and craft beers.” Good luck to manager Martin Lee and his team. Meanwhile... ot £390,000 to invest? The lease of the Pelton Arms in Greenwich is up for sale. ach year, the Dog & Bell Pickle Festival grows. It takes place at the Deptford pub on Saturday October 12 (7-11). I’ll be there...will you? alking pickle, there has been a lot of social media buzz about All in A Pickle deli in Westmount Road, Eltham, selling unusual cheeses and...pickle, of course.

Starters include sweet corn textures accompanied by doughnut and wild mushrooms, and scallop ceviche with chilli dressing, fennel and lemongrass snow. Main courses include British Isles Lamb

Desserts include sticky toffee cake served with apple, banana and vanilla ice cream or poached cucumber with aerated yoghurt, white chocolate mango and passion fruit. WE’VE COME A LONG WAY FROM KEBABS... Once upon a time, Turkish food meant kebab joints – they didn’t look much but nobody went there for the decor.

Doner Kebabs grilled on an upright spit in a rotisserie were mostly consumed for the fat and the salt. Not a healthy option but a welcome stop on the way home after a night on the razz. Fast forward to the new millenium when Turkish restaurants appeared in our streets in ever-increasing numbers. M a n g a l b r a z i e r – t h a t ’s a barbecue to you and me – replaced spits. Hot or cold meze grew in popularity. Menus got longer. Kofte, mixed grills and variations on the kebab appeared. The addition of mouthwatering, vegetarian dishes bought in a new clientele – people looking for a healthy and balanced diet. To understand a little better the renewed popularity of Turkish TRANSFORMED: restaurants I visited the latest Ye Olde Turk in Trafalgar Road outlet in Greenwich: Ye Olde Turk on Trafalgar Road, where the old K i n g Wi l l i a m I V p u b h a s b e e n of Raki. Now that the old kebab cafe is transformed into an airy, roomy restaurant. replaced by newer and larger restaurants it “First,” chef Ahmet Karalar tells me, is not unusual to witness two generations “you need good quality meat. For centuries, Turks Turkish cuisine has a range of sweet have had a tradition called the Raki table. pastries, each more tempting than the Friends and families get together around other. One of the best known is Baklava, the table while sharing meze with a glass a cake made of layers of filo pastry filled

Turkish delights with chopped nuts, sweetened with syrup or honey. Rich, creamed rice puddings, yogurts and fruits are popular too. My all time favourite is Kemalpasa, dough balls soaked in sherbet. So what do you need to look for in a Turkish restaurant? Quality and freshness are paramount. Word of mouth is the best guide. When I asked on Twitter for your favourites a dozen or so were mentioned, including a few recommendations for Ziyafet on Eltham High Street. Have you been? ast week, we had a first and a last in the same week at Greenwich Park – it was the first day of autumn on Thursday September 22 when there is twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night. This was followed on Sunday September 25 by the last cricket match of the season. Truly the end of summer. ur cricket pitch on Rangers Field is let out to visiting teams from the first weekend of May to the end of September. It’s a great setting and with the teams all in whites – something The Royal Parks insists on – it helps give Greenwich Park that “heritage” feel. Not surprisingly it is very popular. Bookings are accepted five days a week, giving the groundsmen time to prepare and repair the wickets for the coming matches. ubs, clubs and work teams make up the bookings. We could fill the slots twice over and restrict teams to three bookings each. One of which is the annual Royal Parks cricket team against an invited opposition. This year for the first time we managed two games. The first was a very special occasion which marked the retirement of John Newton, Chairman of our grounds maintenance contractor Turfsoil. John’s association with Greenwich Park goes all the way back to 1992. As a big cricket fan it seemed appropriate to mark the occasion with a celebratory cricket match with a Royal Parks team captained by myself against the Greenwich Park gardeners, captained by John. In a close fought match The Royal Parks just came out on top, winning a 20-20 match with ten balls to spare. On the way we discovered some hidden talent. Mark, the Park’s tennis coach, proved to be a sporting all-rounder and Greg, the cleaning contractor supervisor, was also an effective batsman and a fearsome fast bowler. On the gardeners’ side, new driver Stuart stands out and grounds supervisor Barry proved that his talent extends beyond preparing the wickets. or my own part I experienced the highs and lows of sport. Coming in as a tailender when the Parks team was chasing a total, I ran out my colleague, Assistant Park Manager Michael, for nought. Things were looking bleak with only a couple of wickets left but Supervisor Alan and I dug in, ran the wides and then I hit a four to win the match. This has never happened before. It’s right up there as my greatest sporting achievement with the 1987 Wisley-Kew Relay race which the student team won for the first time in years (I still remember collapsing with exhaustion on Kingston Bridge at the end of my five mile leg) and the 2004 Farther-Daughter badminton club trophy (runner-up). y success was short-lived. A few weeks later we played a London Marathon staff team and although the Parks team won I was dismissed first ball and dropped a catch, admittedly not an easy one, but I thought I had it covered. n the coming weeks Barry and his colleague Steve will start the programme of renovations to level the cricket table and renovate the wickets so that they are ready for the new season in 2017. I’m already planning my practice schedule...

A Boy George B Kim Wilde C Damon Albarn D Jools Holland Q2 An elderly man here once told me that in the early 1900s his dad who lived near The Pilot Inn sometimes travelled to the old Calvert Road School by an unusual mode of transport? Was it? A Cavalry Horse. The army would exercise their horses at daybreak in the marshland beyond the pub and treated children to a ride to school. B Hearse. A horse-drawn hearse and horses were stabled nearby. A morning burial meant a lift for kids on the way to pick up the body. C Ice Skates. There was an open ditch that ran from The Pilot to Calvert Road – in the winter it formed a skater’s highway directly to school. D Brewer’s Drey and horses delivered beer to The Pilot. On some hot mornings the kids were treated to a cup of beer when cadging a ride. E Calvert Rd School had a horse-drawn school bus that would pick children up from all around the neighbourhood. F Gangster’s Car: The Dawson Gang had a motorcar in the area and liked to give kids a free ride. It later emerged the gang – two of whom were later hanged – disposed of bodies in the marshes. The Blog of Samuel Pepys will be back next month

Neil says: “The Quiz is part of our general neighbourly banter, like requests for people to take parcels or put bins in when on holiday. And I’ll admit it, the GV is the best source of quiz questions I’ve got!”
