In Thailand, tourism has long been considered the ‘Great Multiplier’. As revenue from tourism increases, this positive stimulus is amplified, injecting international income directly into Thai households, and job growth in our sector predictably leads to job growth in other important industries too, including the transportation, wholesale, retail and agriculture sectors.
However, for the past 3 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically disrupted our industry, bringing increased financial and operational burdens to hotels. Even now, as we inch ever closer to fully recovering from the pandemic, new threats to tourism loom on the horizon from a pending global recession, to rising inflation and falling domestic purchasing power here in Thailand.
Fortunately, the number of foreign visitors continues to rise and many hotels are currently enjoying decent occupancy levels. Asian markets are beginning to travel again and we can look forward to increased numbers of travelers from China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea. We can also expect a significant increase in visitors from our ASEAN neighbors.

This early demand is a pleasant reminder of the everlasting charm of Thailand, as we still rank among the most attractive global destinations for international tourists. Add to this our position as one of the first countries in the region to open up, reduce obstacles to travel and welcome all tourists, and it is no surprise that visitors are confident to return here first. But make no mistake, we have strong competition in the race to attract these visitors, with Vietnam just one country that is emerging as a popular alternative destination.
As visitor numbers bounce back, we must meet the challenges of operating normally, especially in the major tourist provinces. Our first priority is to safeguard a resilient and capable work force in order to maintain the excellent levels of hospitality that Thailand is famous for. We need the government sector to help ensure sufficient numbers of competent workers (both Thai and foreign) are available to our hotels and tourism businesses.
With this kind of strong and enduring collaboration from all stakeholders in our industry, our path out of this crisis is guaranteed. On behalf of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), we truly appreciate the efforts of so many people in both the private and public sectors who have helped the country to overcome the difficulties of the past few years. And to our members, be assured that the THA will continue to work diligently so that together we can once more act as the Great Multiplier and help to sustainably, powerfully and profitably drive Thailand’s economy again.
