onnelly Group, Northern Ireland’s largest independent new and used vehicle retailer, has acquired SMW Suzuki in Belfast from the Agnew Group. The showroom on the Boucher Road will be the third Suzuki site for the Donnelly Group, alongside Eglinton and Newtownabbey. Located next to Donnelly Honda, the outlet, which will have frontage on the Boucher Road, will be known as Donnelly Suzuki. Paul Compton, Site Director at Donnelly Group, which is this year celebrating its 70th anniversary, said the newly acquired site strengthens the Group’s existing relationship with Suzuki: “Suzuki has been a manufacturing partner of Donnelly Group since 2005 so we are delighted to build on that partnership with the addition of a third Suzuki showroom,” he said. “The Suzuki brand is one that
matches very much with our own ethos of offering our loyal customers the best value, services and choice available anywhere in Northern Ireland. “It is an exciting time for the manufacturer with the launch earlier this year of a new Swift model while vehicles such as the S-Cross, Vitara and Ignis continue to win awards and plaudits from those in the motor and consumer industries. “Donnelly Suzuki is also offering customers the opportunity to avail of the Suzuki Scrappage Scheme which provides an allowance of up to £2,000 off selected new models.” Many of the existing employees at the Suzuki showroom will be transferred to Donnelly Group. Stephen Robinson, National Sales Manager at Suzuki GB PLC,
commented: “The opening of the Suzuki showroom on Belfast’s Boucher Road by the Donnelly Group ensures a smooth transition of the business for its employees and customers alike. “With new Suzuki vehicles
already available at Eglinton and Newtownabbey, we have first-hand knowledge of Donnelly Group’s strong track record. “We look forward to further developing that relationship at the new Belfast site.”

CARLUBE
CARLUBE INTRODUCES NEW ENGINE OILS TO THE TRIPLE R RANGE
T
he new Carlube Triple R ECO-flo is a range of ultralow viscosity engine oils designed for use in the very latest fuel efficient engines. The ultra-low viscosity ensures the engine oil has rapid circulation around the key engine components from cold start up and offers supreme protection from wear at high temperature long distance driving. The ECO-flo range sees the introduction of 4 new engines oils into the Carlube Triple R range including a 0W-16 engine oil, a first on the UK market. The range also includes a 0W-20 targeted at Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota petrol engines. Vehicle manufacturers such as Honda have been recommending 0W-20 grade lubricants going as far back as 2002. The range is completed with two 5W-20 oils targeted at Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. The ECO-flo range has been formulated to achieve minimal
8- GARAGETRADER
friction and maximum fuel economy. The switch towards thinner oils is driven by the desire to improve vehicle fuel efficiency, however their low viscosity can also lead to a compromise in engine durability. Therefore these products must be carefully formulated to achieve the fuel economy benefits without compromising on wear protection, deposit formation and sludge build-up to enable longer engine life. For example the 0W16 delivers over 70% more wear protection when compared to the API SN test limits ensuring the customers will receive complete engine protection. The advanced additive technology used in these oils also helps provide full engine emissions systems protection. This results in less harmful pollutants and emissions being released into the atmosphere, along with the reduced CO2 emissions from the fuel economy benefits make these the most ecofriendly lubricants that we produce.

SDC TRAILERS REDUCES WASTE AND INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY WITH 3M PPS PAINT PREPARATION SYSTEM
A
s one of Europe’s leading trailer manufacturers, SDC Trailers is constantly on the lookout for innovative ways to improve efficiency and reduce waste. The company prepares and paints up to 35 trailers a day at each of its facilities in Toomebridge, County Antrim and Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. With such a high workload, every litre of paint thinner adds up, as does every minute of unnecessary downtime. Recently, the company, which specialises in curtainsiders, box vans, and skeletal and platform trailers, began searching for ways to reduce waste. Its aim was twofold – to increase productivity
and to manage waste. Declan Sheridan, a technical officer at SDC Trailers, said: “On the one hand, our painters were spending a long time cleaning out spray guns, which meant they had less time to spend painting and doing other work. “At the same time, we were wasting a lot of thinner, which was costing us a significant amount of money. For this reason, we also wanted a solution that could help us to reduce waste.” By this point, SDC Trailers had been working with 3M for around 20 years. The trailer manufacturer decided to trial the science-based
check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
technology company’s Paint Preparation System (PPS), which is designed to tackle exactly the kinds of problems SDC Trailers faced. The innovative system from 3M helps increase efficiency by eliminating the need for traditional mixing cups and paint strainers. Unlike traditional spray cups, paint is mixed in and sprayed out of the same liner, with a lid and built-in filter. This can reduce the amount of cleaning solvent required by up to 70 per cent, as well as enabling painters to mix less paint and drastically cutting the time needed for gun cleaning, improving operator efficiency by as much as 15 per cent. Having now integrated 3M PPS into its everyday operations, SDC Trailers says it is saving nearly 100 litres of thinner a week. As well as helping SDC Trailers to
achieve its two original aims – improving productivity and reducing waste – PPS has also benefitted the company in other ways. For example, by cutting the company’s use of thinners, it has also significantly reduced VOC (volatile organic compound) levels in the workplace. In addition, one of the system’s key advantages is that it enables a painter’s spray gun to function at any angle. Specially-designed adapters allow painters to use the PPS system with virtually any spray gun. Declan said: “Our painters really enjoy using PPS. They need something easy to work with, and 3M’s system is exactly that. “Most importantly, it allows them to get jobs done quicker and easier, without sacrificing quality, particularly as less time is needed for the paint preparation and cleanup processes, which leaves more time to give the customer a perfect finish.” To discover more about 3M and its product range, visit www.3M. co.uk/bodyshop GARAGETRADER - 9

Batteries CHARLES HURST TO PROMOTE BANNER’S NEW TRIO OF NEW EFB BATTERIES
W
ith a third of group sales volume today emanating from environment friendly start-stop batteries, leading European manufacturer of batteries and battery accessories, Banner Batteries, is extending its Running Bull EFB product offering with the launch of three new aftermarket 12V part numbers. And looking to promote the new-to-range batteries across Belfast has recently appointed as Banner stockist, the Charles Hurst Group. Available with immediate effect and providing comprehensive coverage of Ford vehicles with start-stop systems are two type number Running Bull EFBs with 65 and 75Ah rated capacities respectively. And scheduled to be introduced to coincide with the impending battery season is an additional Running Bull EFB battery rated at 80Ah that is suitable for a raft of models from leading manufacturers such as Audi, VW and Skoda. Indeed all three batteries destined for the aftermarket reflect Banner’s developing and established O/E pedigree, the Austrian-based manufacturer today being the preferred original equipment choice of Audi, Aston Martin, BMW, Caterham, Lotus, Mercedes, Morgan, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Seat, Skoda, Volvo, VW and many more. Commenting on the newlyestablished association with Banner Batteries, Cyril Morrison, Parts Manager at Charles Hurst Group, said: “We set our sights on dealing with a manufacturer that had an established and prominent OE pedigree and one that could deliver on quality. As a result, and having looked at a number of possibilities, it was Banner Batteries that interested us most. Not only do they
12- GARAGETRADER
supply their batteries as original equipment to many of today’s leading car and CV manufacturers, our research clearly demonstrated that their products are proven in terms of their performance. We are therefore optimistic that their products will be well received across our customer base.” BANNER EFB BATTERIES Used mainly in today’s midrange and small cars that operate simple Start/Stop systems, but without any energy recuperation requirement, Banner’s EFB batteries – available with 60-80Ah capacities – are proven in terms of their performance characteristics. In addition to offering high levels of vibration resistance and twice the cycle life of a conventional battery, EFBs features a double-lid design to safeguard against leaks, whilst also delivering maximum operational safety. Furthermore, the use of modern mesh calcium technology makes the battery maintenance free. Given that battery technologies deployed in Start/Stop vehicles cannot be interchanged, Banner is actively promoting its web-based VRM (Number plate) battery application guide, available at: www.bannerbatteryfinder.co.uk. Commenting on the new EFB batteries, Country Manager for the UK, Lee Quinney said: “The importance AGM and EFB battery technology continues to gain momentum in the aftermarket and we are confident that the new Running Bull part numbers will help consolidate Banner’s position within what is an increasingly important sector. Furthermore, the new-to-range part numbers not only demonstrate Banner’s standing as a complete solutions provider, they reflect and support the Group’s growing OE pedigree.” CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE: www.garagetrader.co.uk

ith so many developments across all product groups, it’s very easy to overlook the humble battery in terms of both its technical development and profit making potential. As a result, ECOBAT Battery Technologies (EBT), formerly Manbat, is highlighting some key principles that will help factors refocus on the opportunities that this ‘cornerstone’ product offers. The first area to highlight is the technology, because although for many years the traditional SLI (starter/lighting/ignition) battery had remained remarkably unchanged in terms of its core design, the vehicle manufacturers (VMs) needed a viable battery solution for the start-stop vehicles they had developed in order to meet the increasingly strict emission targets implemented by European legislation. This changed the
landscape significantly.
The absorbed glass matt (AGM) battery that was developed to fulfil the requirement is a formidable piece of engineering that, unlike the SLI battery, is designed with a high cyclic (charge/discharge/ recharge) capacity and the ability to recharge extremely quickly. This is needed because, over their design life, which was originally projected to be around four years, they are expected, due to the vehicle’s start-stop system, to make 350,000 engine starts, compared with the 30,000 expected by an SLI battery in a non start-stop vehicle. However, because most drivers tend to deactivate the start-stop system, the battery is under used and in effect, over engineered, as it
COMPLETE WORKSHOP BATTERY TESTING KIT LAUNCH POWERS UP
G
S Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd have launched their ‘Always Check The Battery’ initiative with the release of a low-cost battery testing kit for workshops. The kit, which includes a battery tester, guide book and various POS material is designed to encourage workshops to join the scheme and see the customer service and battery revenue benefits for themselves. Yuasa’s major battery testing workshop trial revealed that 11% of vehicles going into a workshop require a replacement battery, and 27% required recharging or reconditioning. It also demonstrated that an average garage could increase battery related revenue to over £30,000 a year. Despite this, workshops rarely check batteries regularly. By checking the battery of all vehicles prior to an MOT or service and repair work, workshops can unlock this potential year-round battery revenue and improve customer service, enhance reputation and drive long-term loyalty.

Batteries
TESTING TIMES
W
ith winter upon us, the key season for battery failures is here. Irish workshops are well placed to support their customers in avoiding the hassle and unnecessary expense a dud battery can present, says Martin Gray, CEO at Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly. “Car breakdowns due to flat batteries will soon be flooding workshops. An annual event, we expect around one in 10 cars to need a replacement battery in the next 12 months. We are encouraging workshops to carry out a complimentary battery health check at the same time. As well as saving motorists from the inconvenience of a breakdown, and the expense of a distress purchase, it will help you to maximise sales – a win-win.
“There is a range of quality battery testers to choose, from including such brands as Bosch and Exide. A battery low on charge might just need a recharge, but technicians need to be aware that, just as battery technology has moved on, so too have chargers. “Smart chargers that are capable of five or even seven-stage charging are required to not only charge modern batteries but keep them topped up with a ‘float charge’. Bodyshops will recognise the need to keep a battery charged because some jobs can take several days or even weeks. Preventing a battery from discharging is key if you want to avoid the complication of fitting a new battery. “That’s because installing the right battery is not as easy these days. Demands on batteries have increased as more electricallypowered systems have been fitted to cars and different cars place different demands on their batteries, to the extent that replacements hav become almost model-specific. The knock-on effect is technicians need to be able to access a wide range of stock to ensure they can complete jobs. 16- GARAGETRADER
That’s why, as part of Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly’s commitment to support customers, it keeps over 400,000 batteries in stock. This includes products from big-name brands like Bosch, Exide, Duracell, which have OE pedigrees and are the same product supplied to vehicle manufacturers, through to aftermarket batteries such as Lion. The Lion range, exclusively available from Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly, includes Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) types for the ever-increasing stop-start. It’s not just about accessing the right stock, but also about understanding which battery is required to meet a vehicle’s electrical demands. The most significant trend, in terms of electrically taxing systems, is the increasing adoption of stop-start fuel saving systems. By 2020, more than half of all
cars produced in Europe will have stop-start so it’s imperative that replacement batteries can cope with the continuous on/off action. The leading stop-start battery technology, for the most exacting requirements, is AGM, followed by EFB, which satisfies requirements somewhere between conventional batteries and AGM. Importantly, they are both capable of powering the electrics when the engine is in ‘sleep mode’, at traffic lights or stuck in a tailback, even when lots of energy consuming technology – lights, air con, stereo, etc. – are functioning all at once. Some car owners, however, might not even realise their car has stop-start or believe that when the system kicks in and cuts the engine that they have a battery problem! As such, technicians should always correctly identify the make, model and derivative to ensure the right battery is selected – one with at least the same specification as the
one it replaces. Despite the ever-broadening range of motorcycle makes and models, bikers can be well served with a comprehensive range of batteries. The 10 most popular references in the Lion motorcycle range, for instance, cover 55-60% of the market, including many popular 400-900cc models from Ducati, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. A relatively new addition to our range is Exide Lithium Ion motorcycle batteries. Originally developed for racing, the superlight Lithium Ion batteries weigh between 0.4kg and 1.5kg. This represents a massive weight saving over standard lead acid motorbike batteries, which generally weigh around 4-5kg but can be as heavy as 8.7kg. Thanks to an innovative design, just ten-part numbers cover virtually every post-2004 bike on the roads. They will accept a faster charge too, so they’re a great allround upgrade.

AUTOELECTRO
AUTOELECTRO IDENTIFIES STARTER MOTOR AND ALTERNATOR FAILURES LINKED TO FUEL INGRESS

he number of starter motor and alternator failures attributed to fluid contamination is rising, according to Autoelectro, the UK’s leading independent remanufacturer of rotating electrics. The supplier says many vehicle manufacturers now install these parts either under or close to a lubricant or fluid component or pipe. Fuel filters and lines, power steering pumps or pipes and coolant pipes are all examples of potential parts which can leak onto the starter motor or alternator, triggering damage and premature failure. Autoelectro, boasting more than three decades of technical knowledge and professional customer service, has identified two vehicles and how they’re commonly affected by this type of fault: Ford Mondeo 1.8 TD (1993-2000) Due to a connection fault at the oil supply line and leaking oil from the filter, fluid can enter the alternator. As the component is located under the turbo, any oil leakage from the turbo will enter the alternator, causing accelerated wear and

3M ADHESIVES GT
THE GROWING ROLE OF ADHESIVES WITHIN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
S
teve Hollowell, an application engineering specialist at science-based technology company 3M, discusses the increasing use of adhesives within automotive manufacturing – and what this means for the aftermarket repairs industry Adhesives have been used within automotive manufacturing for many years, but traditionally only for jobs requiring relatively low strength. Nowadays, however, adhesives are being used much more widely, often for joining large parts, such as chassis and panels. This is because vehicles today house more equipment than ever before, from airbags and CD changers to safety cages and computerised crash avoidance systems. All this equipment adds weight, which reduces fuel efficiency, costing drivers more and harming the environment. In order to reduce weight while having the equipment, manufacturers are turning to alternative materials for parts that have otherwise been made from mild steel ever since the late 19th Century. Such materials include carbon fibre, aluminium, magnesium and high-strength steels.
The problem is that often these cannot be welded together, because they are dissimilar materials. A new wave of high-strength adhesives made from chemicals like epoxy is helping to solve this problem. These can keep their strength and flexibility to enable cars to function in virtually the same way as they did years ago. Such adhesives allow manufacturers to safely bond, for example, aluminium to steel, which previously carried a high risk of causing galvanic corrosion. They also do not damage or distort substrates, as there is no need to drill holes or warp metal during welding. However, adhesives must never be used by themselves for such structural purposes. Rather, they should always be used in conjunction with a mechanical join, whether rivets, welds or laser welds. The trend for using adhesives to join larger automotive parts began around 15 years ago, when parking sensors first entered the market. As technology advanced, with features such as self-parking systems becoming relatively commonplace, the trend continued. With the reality of automated vehicles getting closer every day, the need for adhesives within
check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
vehicle manufacturing looks set to grow even further over the coming years. This presents a problem for the automotive aftermarket repairs industry, which is already starting to feel a knock-on effect. Because of increased adhesive use within automotive manufacturing, many heavy structural repairs, such as chassis replacements, now require highly specialist tools, including selfpiercing riveters. To ensure their vehicles are safe after repair, some manufacturers are now moving towards giving such equipment only to approved dealer networks, cutting out many smaller businesses. Even those dealers who are approved must upskill their staff and pay for more labour time. According to Thatcham Research, the motor insurers’ automotive research centre, the average repair bill has risen by 32 per cent over the past three years. Announcing the findings in June, Peter Shaw, Thatcham Research CEO, said this had been driven, in part, by the “increasing complexity of vehicle materials and technology”. Of course, adhesives are also used for multiple nonstructural purposes within the automotive aftermarket. There is now a trend within the aftermarket to use both non-structural
and structural adhesives. Only the use of structural adhesives within the aftermarket is affected by the trend to use more adhesives within vehicle manufacturing. This is because in structural cases aftermarket professionals are required to follow manufacturers’ processes. When selecting adhesives for either purpose, there are many things for aftermarket professionals to consider. These include work times, sand times and cure times. Automotive adhesives can also be epoxy or urethane based, flexible or rigid. Several adhesives are available with corrosion inhibitors or with an ability to featheredge and fill. Furthermore, some can adhere to wood, rubber, glass, metal, sheet moulding compound (SMC), fibreglass, and a range of plastics, depending on use. Another point to consider is that super-fast-setting adhesives can eliminate the need for a separate accelerator, reducing preparation times. Products that enable workers to rebuild, reshape and bond all kinds of plastic without running or sagging can make jobs cleaner and more durable. 3M has many years’ experience creating innovative solutions for the automotive industry, including a wide range of adhesives, and are always happy to offer free advice and product trials. MINTEX
MINTEX PERFECTS THE 100% COPPER FREE BRAKE PADS
A
s part of its extensive R&D programme, renowned aftermarket brake brand, Mintex, has developed its own unique formulations to ensure all of its pads are 100% copper free. Copper, which is inherently a good conductor of heat, is extremely damaging for the environment due to the deposits left on the road as the brake pads wear down. The small amounts of copper wash away into the waterways and are highly toxic to fish, invertebrates, amphibians and phytoplankton. To ensure its products are more
environmentally friendly, as well as complying to the Better Brake Rules, Mintex has developed a friction formula that eradicates 100% copper from its pads, without compromising on the quality of performance. as taking our responsibility to the wider environment seriously. “Through extensive research and development we have found the perfect formula to replace the copper content within our friction. This ensures that all Mintex brake pads are 100% copper free, whilst still achieving the same renowned quality our customers have become accustomed to.”

materials, but also brings about improved braking reliability.
The Better Brake Rules regulation is a law passed in Washington in 2010 to reduce the use of toxic material in automotive brake pads and shoes. This law restricts the use of several heavy metals and asbestos and provides a phase out of copper. Vehicle brake pads manufactured after 2021 must contain less than five per cent copper. By 2025, brake pads must contain less than 0.5 per cent copper.
TEXTAR COATED BRAKE DISCS RISE ABOVE THE COMPETITION IN TMD FRICTION TEST
T
MD Friction, has put the quality and performance of its Textar brake disc coating to the test; comparing thickness, uniformity and corrosion against three competitor products as part of its benchmarking series. TMD Friction defined 20 measuring points, including four at the contact surface of the disc top hat, and four on the visible outer surface of the disc to evaluate coating thickness and uniformity. The results showed that Textar had the thinnest coating in all measuring areas, with only a slight variation in data, indicating high uniformity. Textar had the most even coating while proving equally resistant to corrosion when compared to its thicker-coated competitors. The test also highlighted that coated discs have equivalent break-in properties to uncoated discs. Results revealed that thinner coating does not lead to higher corrosion, and despite having the thinnest coating among the tested products, Textar had similar results to its competitors. To determine corrosion resistance, the brake discs 20- GARAGETRADER
Both coating thickness and uniformity make a real difference to brake reliability. If the coating is too thick and uneven on the contact surface of the brake disc top hat, it can have a huge impact on runout. Too much runout causes brake growl and leads to steering wheel movement and/or vibrations in the brake pedal. The thinner coating not only ensures efficient use of
Vincenzo Di Caro, development engineer at TMD Friction, said: “Coated brake discs can be used as and when you need them, without preparation. To protect from corrosion, uncoated discs are stored in oil, which must be removed from the disc before assembly. “Coated discs don’t require oil removal, reducing workload and making the process more
environmentally friendly through reducing oil waste. We recommend garages always clean the existing hub and remove corrosion before assembly so that the new brake disc can reach optimum performance.” TMD Friction regularly carries out tests within its benchmark series to secure and develop the high quality and performance of its products. TMD Friction always chooses a balanced mix of competitors, including well-known OE and aftermarket manufacturers.

F
or the past ten years, OSRAM has been writing success stories with the product family NIGHT BREAKER all over the world and this has intensified in the last few years. NIGHT BREAKER was first launched in September 2007, and today NIGHT BREAKER LASER is the top product in the halogen performance range from OSRAM; providing up to 130 percent more light compared to standard OSRAM halogen bulbs enabling drivers to see further and keeping them safer on the roads. “The great and continuous success of the NIGHT BREAKER family has highlighted the many opportunities for our partners and their customers to maximise their sales and profit potential” said John Lancaster, Speciality Products (SP) Business Unit Manager for the UK. Since the market launch in 2007, the NIGHT BREAKER product family has continually developed and expanded. Currently, the halogen portfolio consists of the product families NIGHT BREAKER LASER, providing up to 130 percent more light and NIGHT BREAKER UNLIMITED, which completes the portfolio providing up to 110 percent more light compared to standard OSRAM halogen bulbs. Both ranges are available for almost all current ECE bulb types. The advantages of increased light output are obvious and depending on the type of headlight, the NIGHT
BREAKER LASER product produces a beam that is up to 40 meters longer compared to standard OSRAM halogen bulbs, enabling obstacles and pedestrians to be recognized sooner. With the above-average brightness and whiter light, drivers will also feel fatigue-free when driving for long periods of time at night. A combination of a highly engineered filament and pure xenon gas filling help the LASER bulbs achieve the extra light output. They have a unique design with a laser etched precision window providing maximum performance and the leading brand name ‘NIGHT BREAKER’ has also been etched on to the glass of the bulb giving them a very distinctive appearance. For vehicles with Xenon (HID) headlights, OSRAM offers the XENARC NIGHT BREAKER UNLIMTED range, which provides up to 70 percent more light compared to standard OSRAM Xenon bulbs. Headlights fitted with XENARC NIGHT BREAKER UNLIMITED (depending on the type of headlamp) produce a light beam that is up to 260 meters long, which is equivalent to the length of 2.5 average football pitches. DAYCO
THE ‘CHECK & CHANGE’ RULE
O
verview There are few product groups within the aftermarket that are overlooked in terms of their regular examination and replacement, but the auxiliary belt and the drive system, are certainly among them. Why the auxiliary drive system has traditionally been ignored can be largely attributed to the fact that it is generally a very reliable system and few vehicle manufacturers (VMs) specify its change in their service schedules. However, Dayco, a leading engine products and drive systems supplier for the automotive industry, is urging technicians to turn their attention to the auxiliary system for the benefit of the motorist and provide a business opportunity for themselves. Check & Change Unlike the previous generation neoprene rubber based belt, the EPDM formulated belt used nowadays, wears very differently. So whereas during use, the previous technology would gradually lead the belt to perish by cracking or chunking – when a section of belt 24- GARAGETRADER
actually comes off – the current EPDM technology belt wears gradually, not unlike the wear to a tyre, which actually makes it more difficult to detect. As a result, technicians should use the vehicle’s mileage as their first point of reference, which means that if the vehicle has covered 60,000 miles or more, the belt
should be thoroughly inspected and if it shows any sign of damage or wear, should automatically be replaced. To help technicians correctly assess the condition of the belt, Dayco has designed the aWEARness® gauge, which provides them with three ways to check whether the belt needs to be replaced or is okay
to be reinstalled. The two most relevant to an EPDM belt are the wear indicator bar, which highlights material loss and the profile indicator, which reveals whether the belt retains its correct form. Both reflect the level of wear and if the belt fails either check, it must be replaced. Market Opportunities

ENGINE EGR AND TURBO ISSUES CURED BY BLUECHEM
I
f you are working on an engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or turbo issues, carbon build up in the combustion area or contaminated valves then Bluechem has the answer. Carbon X was specifically developed in the Bluechem CTP research centre in Germany for a global motor manufacturer and now after lengthy testing is available to the worldwide motor trade. Carbon X is a 2-component, simple to use product that cleans and clears contamination quickly and thoroughly. It cleans the combustion chamber without complex dismantling of the engine being required and is suitable for turbos, EGR and inlet and outlet valves. Component K1 (cleaning foam) is a specially developed high-performance formulation that dissolves and removes all operationally caused contaminations in the entire combustion chamber of an engine. 26- GARAGETRADER
The product removes carbon residues in the cylinder head area, in particular on the valves, the piston crown, the piston top land and in the area of the first piston ring. It also cleans the seats of intake and exhaust valves (if they are open). Residues in the EGR valve, the turbocharger and the air intake system (intake manifold to intake valves) are also reliably eliminated. Carbon X does not attack seals and is compatible with all engine components. Component K2 (neutralizer) causes a chemical reaction which liquefies the previously introduced cleaning foam (K1) and binds the dissolved contamination. With the Carbon X Extractor, the resulting emulsion and the dissolved deposits can be removed safely from the combustion chamber. Since K2 has highly efficient lubrication additives with exceptionally high cohesion (extreme pressure additives), Carbon X protects the engine from high friction during the start-up process, thus preventing wear of the mechanical
components. In addition, the seals are effectively protected. Full details and a video is available through the company website, www.bluechemgb.com Bluechem has been distributed in Ireland for over 25 years. NEW DEOS FROM MIRKA SET TO SHAPE THE FUTURE
A
new Direct Electric Orbital Sander (DEOS) with a revolutionary design has been launched by Mirka. The Mirka DEOS gets closer to the surface, easily accessing hard to reach areas and delivers a flawless smooth finish quicker than other sanders. The DEOS is available in two sizes, DEOS 383 CV 70 x198 and DEOS 353 CV 81x 133, making it suitable for use across multiple applications, including body filler and primer sanding. The DEOS is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. When the tool is combined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, it offers an excellent scratch pattern and a dustfree work environment. Its innovative features incorporate a powerful brushless motor which provides a high power to weight ratio when in use. The design team has been able to reduce the weight, size and 30- GARAGETRADER
height of the sander, providing customers with a compact, lightweight and easy to use tool. In addition, it has an integrated vibration sensor with Bluetooth technology that can be connected to a mobile device with the new myMirka app to give guidance on vibration levels.
Craig Daycock, managing director of Mirka UK, says, “We listened to our customers and have now developed an industry classleading tool that will help improve production, output and profit. The addition of the DEOS will meet user demand for both fine and tough applications, while still having the ability to deliver the
high-quality finish that is expected from Mirka’s tools.” Mirka offer a 2-year warranty as standard, with an additional year given subject to the tool being registered within 30 days of purchase on the Mirka website.

REFINISH GT
REFINISH TIPS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES E xceptional repair results at low temperatures is the challenge for refinishers when they carry out paint repairs on electric and hybrid vehicles. And coordinated product solutions from Spies Hecker provide the answer. The number of registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles is growing steadily; it has more than quadrupled since 2010. However, the refinishing of these vehicles presents new challenges. “The drying process in particular is affected. The temperature limits are clearly set by the vehicle manufacturer and of course must be observed. Overall, for the exact manufacturer’s recommendation on how to carry out a proper repair, refinishers must look at the vehicle’s documentation,” says Kevin Welling, Training Academy Manager for Axalta in the UK and Ireland.
Integrated refinish system solutions can deliver exceptional repair results on paint damaged electric and hybrid vehicles, even at low temperatures. “The Spies Hecker Hi-TEC Performance System provides a refinish system that meets many car manufacturers’ specifications. Permahyd Hi-TEC Base Coat 480 and Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 – both part of the Hi-TEC Performance System - are particularly well-suited for use at the low temperatures required during the repair of paint damage on electric vehicles,” explains Welling. In addition, Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 provides fast drying at low temperatures. “When Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8800 is used with Permasolid VHS Speed Hardener 3250, it can be sanded and polished after between 35 to 50 minutes at 21oC,” adds Welling. The air-drying option
also helps save energy compared to forced drying.
The rule of thumb, however, when repairing electric vehicles is safety first. Basic procedures must be adhered, including switch off power, ensure there is no voltage, and ensure the power can’t accidently be switched on during the repair. Welling concludes, “only when the refinisher has carried out all these
safety checks should the repair commence.”
VALSPAR AUTOMOTIVE BOOSTS PROSPRAY RANGE V alspar Automotive has demonstrated its dedication to the Prospray refinish system with a series of major changes and investments aimed at boosting the quality of this growing brand. At the start of 2017 Valspar made the confident move of transferring all production of Prospray products to its state of the art facilities in Lelystad, Netherlands. The factory is fully certified to the latest quality and environmental standards (ISO 9001 and ISO14001). This means Valspar will have even tighter control of performance, helping to boost consistency for all Prospray products. Moving Prospray closer into the Valspar family also means the
company can improve its service to customers in terms of R&D, colour and technical support. Dipan Haria, Valspar’s Commercial Director, Automotive, EMEA, confirms: “We are continuously raising standards to meet today’s market needs with the aim of delivering a world class experience for our customers. Prospray is a global automotive refinishes brand and this investment highlights our commitment to its future.”

STP STEPS IN TO REDUCE STOP-START ENGINE WEAR AND TEAR
E
uro Car Parts Team P R Reilly have just introduced a brand-new product from STP to help motorists reduce the added wear and tear on petrol and diesel engines because of increasingly-prevalent start-stop technology. STP Start-Stop Engine Cleaner, available from September 2017, is designed to keep the fuel intake system working at top performance levels despite the extra strain.
While start-stop technology has the benefit of reducing fuel consumption and emissions, some experts believe it could increase the number of start-stop cycles by ten times* over an engine’s lifetime –
increasing the build-up of harmful deposits. By adding STP Stop-Start Engine Cleaner to a full tank of fuel every 2,000 miles, key engine parts are protected, helping motorists to avoid expensive repair bills. Otherwise, motorists could suffer from potential power loss, driveability issues and increased emissions if they don’t take steps to maintain their engine. And, with air quality now such a key concern in our cities, it pays to ensure your vehicle is compatible with new emissions regulations – and performing at top levels whatever the traffic. Damage to key start-stop engine parts can be caused by wear,
harmful deposits and poor fuel quality. STP Start-Stop Engine Cleaner can assist with preventing such issues.
Part of a new range of easily accessible fuel additives, STP Start-Stop Engine Cleaner is a key example of how interservice car maintenance can be carried out by motorists at home. The brand is keen to emphasise that fuel additives are not just for older vehicles, and has introduced several products designed specifically for modern engine technology. They are Cillian Campbell (Wrights ARC Dromore), Scott Patterson (Wrights ARC Dromore), Ruairi Neeson (Agnew ARC) in the Autobody Repair section and Conor McKevitt (Wrights ARC Dromore) in the Car Painting section. Training for this will now commence on Saturdays to prepare these skilled apprentices to showcase their skills to a possible audience of over 100,000. If they score higher than 60% they could also progress to Squad Selection for World Skills 2019 which is being held in Kasan, Russia. Two other apprentices from North West Regional College will also be joining our boys at Skill Auto 2017, they are Jordan Barlow (Lloyd Cooke Motors) in the Autobody Repair section and Dylan Russell (Kerr Bros Omagh) in the Car Painting section. This leaves 4 of the 6 final competitors for the
Autobody Repair section are from Northern Ireland and 2 of the 6 in Car Painting are also from Northern Ireland. Proving yet again that the skills set in Northern Ireland punches well above its weight in Accident Repair. All of the competitors from these groups who achieve the necessary percentage at Skill Auto 2017 and are age eligible for World Skills 2019 will be selected from this group. This is now the only list of apprentices from Northern Ireland that can possibly progress to the world stage. We have decided this year to offer this additional strand of training to vehicle dealerships and repair workshops. This group has been carefully selected and only 12 students will be selected to join this group. practical skill ability. Vehicle Parts and Administration Course Riverpark Training have noticed a significant drop in numbers applying for the “Parts” course, this mirrors a noticeable drop in young people applying for apprenticeships in general at Riverpark Training this year. The main cause seems to be that students have decided to return to school. The knock-on effect to the Motor Industry could have staffing issues in later years, young people applying for an apprenticeship is not a numbers game it is about supply of the right person to the employer. This year we have noticed that the quality young person is harder to find therefore we have invested in significant time with a new school engagement programme that will target the genuinely interested young person. Careers Fair 2017 As part of a new incentive for careers engagement the Riverpark Training team have just completed a 2-day event at Titanic Exhibition where they provided hands on practical demonstrations on vehicle panel polishing and plastic welding to school leavers from all over Northern Ireland. techniques. The stand has proved very popular with over 100 students completing an expression of interest. This is the message we need to get out to school leavers. University is not for everyone and apprenticeships can deliver an alternative route to higher education. We have seen time and time again that young people with good hand skills can develop very well in a practical career, but this also needs to be supported by employers engaging in apprenticeships rather than providing work placements that have no career progression. We at Riverpark, will be over the next 9 months, working hard to ensure we can supply the Motor Industry with good quality young people for their future developments.
