Shelbourne Motors has officially opened its new £5million multi-brand complex in Newry. The state-ofthe-art facility features Renault, Dacia and Kia showrooms, and a purpose-built Autoselect Used Car Supermarket.

COMMENT

Our congratulations go to the Ward family who have invested £5m in their new state of art multi-franchise site in Newry. The all new facility features Renault, Dacia and Kia showrooms, and a purpose-built Autoselect Used Car Supermarket and the 50,000 sq ft development also includes new car handover bays, drive-in service centre and lounge-style waiting area. The family owned business has come a long way since it opened its first Toyota dealership in January 1973 and remain the longest established franchised Toyota dealer in Northern Ireland. It’s all the more impressive given the uncertainty in the motor trade both north and south caused by Brexit. Hopefully 2020 will see the motor trade bounce back. The Kia, Renault and Dacia partnerships position Shelbourne Motors as the only dedicated dealership supplying new and used vehicles for the global car manufacturers in the Newry and Mourne area. -Pat Burns, Editor

Lookers boss departs after another profit warning Andy Bruce

A

ndy Bruce, the chief executive of Lookers, owners of the Charles Hurst Group, has departed after 19 years with the company recently as the company warned the challenging car market is continuing to hit the business. The company, which had already issued a profit warning in July, said trading since mid-September had “been much more challenging than expected”. Boss Andy Bruce, who has been with Lookers since 2000, taking the top seat in 2014, and chief operating officer Nigel McMill left the company towards the end of 2019. Chairman Phil White said: “It is disappointing to report this downturn in trading, but we have taken action to drive the future financial performance of the group. “The board is resolute in its determination to restore the Group’s fortunes with market leading practices in the sector.” Mr Bruce said: “After nearly two decades with Lookers, it is now

time for me to move onto new ventures and allow new leadership to take the business into its next chapter.” Mr McMinn added: “I have enjoyed helping to build the business at Lookers and working with a great team of people.” Management said it now expects underlying pre-tax profits to hit just

£20 million in 2019, compared with £67.3 million in 2018. Lookers blamed the poor performance at its 150 showrooms on “ongoing weakness in consumer confidence in the light of political and economic uncertainty, pressure on used car margins and retail cost inflation”. It added that due to these ongoing

challenges, the board has sped up the sell-off of non-core assets in the business, or “portfolio consolidation”, to improve the company – although site closures are expected to cost £8 million this year. The car market has been struggling recently, with environmental concerns and Brexit playing a part, especially with families putting big ticket purchases on hold during the uncertainty. Lookers is also under investigation by the FCA over the way it sold car loans between January 1 2016 and June 13 2019. The company said it continues to “fully support” the FCA, but added “we are unable to predict what, if any, impact the outcome of the investigation may have”. Independent analyst Nick Bubb said of the announcement: “It would be easy for the car dealer Lookers to blame ‘Brexit uncertainty’ for today’s profit warning, but the fact that the veteran CEO has stepped down implies that the problems are company-specific.” New car sales across the UK fell by 2.36% across the UK as a whole in 2019, with Northern Ireland new car registrations dropping by 1.94%. Worst hit was Scotland where new car sales were down by 5.45%. The Ford Fiesta was the top selling car in Northern Ireland in 2019, followed by the VW Golf.

CONTINENTAL Continental Launching Multi V-Belt in OEM Quality on the Agricultural Spare Parts Market

C

ontinental is launching a wide range of OEM quality multi V-belts on the agricultural spare parts market. This means that, in the future, farmers will benefit twofold when replacing their multi V-belts: powerful belts as installed by the manufacturer and cost-efficiency. Safety during operation Multi V-belts assume a central function in driving components in agricultural machinery. They transfer engine power to auxiliary units such as dynamos or generators and provide the entire energy supply in modern harvesters. Multi V-belts ensure that harvesting operations run smoothly, safely and trouble-free. In modern combine harvesters and tractors, they are subjected to increasingly powerful forces and thus higher levels of wear and tear. This makes it all the more important that the belts are of a high quality standard. Continental uses its many years of experience gained in the automotive OEM market for the benefit of the agricultural spare parts market.

“Thanks to the technology transfer, farmers also have the opportunity of obtaining high-quality multi V-belts from their dealers without compromising on quality,” emphasizes Alexander Behmann, application engineer for agricultural belts at Continental. “OEM quality gives operators even more certainty that there will be no unplanned downtime during the short harvest period, which could mean high financial losses for a farmer.” The multi V-belts are specially designed for the requirements of the agricultural sector. “High resistance to dirt and dust is particularly indispensable to agricultural machinery,” says Behmann. “Just as much as the reliable transmission of power in cold and wet conditions and a high tolerance for disk offset.” The multi V-belts also have a special cover fabric made of polyamide. This ensures that the belt runs particularly quietly and is wear-resistant. The machines are generally serviced after the season in the Autumn, when the heavily stressed multi V-belts are also replaced. With the new belt range, farmers now have access to multi V-belts in

OEM quality that are available as regular spare parts ex-warehouse. The multi V-belt portfolio is available from fall 2019 for the markets of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Finding the right belt – in the online catalog Practical service: registered customers can easily find the right drive belt for the agricultural sector in the new Continental Online Catalog. Users are provided with an overview of the complete range and can quickly find a suitable replacement product by searching by manufacturer, model or OE article number. This is because the catalog includes the latest models from manufacturers and offers convenient decryption and translation of the OE article number for the spare parts market. Multi V-belts from Continental also have a QR code on the packaging that customers can use to obtain an overview of the systems that use the

corresponding belt. Continental will also be showcasing the new multi V-belt portfolio at the world’s leading trade fair, Agritechnica, in Hanover from November 10 to November 16, 2019 (Hall 4, Booth C22). Experts will be available to provide more information about drive belts for the agricultural sector. The online catalog is available at agridur.continental.com .

ith a new MEYLE KIT, Hamburg manufacturer offers another costsaving repair solution in line with the current market value: the ABS sensor kit in quality enables targeted replacement of the defective ABS sensor and the sensor ring – a solution that’s currently only available through. Up until recently, if an ABS sensor had been damaged by a defective sensor ring, it would have been necessary to replace the entire wheel hub, which is expensive for both the driver and workshop. The comprising ABS sensor, sensor ring and installation materials can help: most of the time, the wheel hub is still fully functional and can be used. This solution is currently available for the vehicles Audi A3, VW Golf, VW Jetta, SEAT Altea and SEAT Leon, whose ABS

Dominik Overmann, Head of the Electronics & Sensors Product Team. All electronic parts fulfil OE specifications 100% and are only incorporated into the portfolio after extensive functional testing, with additional focus on the quality of data. Thanks to detailed research on application and vehicle data, guarantees an accurate fit – a key criterion that enables fast and correct parts identification for workshops and minimises return costs. ‘Particularly in electronics, the right data forms the basis for selecting the appropriate parts for models and thus ensuring seamless communication between components,’ explains Overmann. Practical helper for everyday workshop operations: ABS detector card, ABS detector card is a practical helper for everyday

workshop operations, promoting fast identification of ABS sensor ring defects. The card can be used for a whole host of applications, including testing magnetic sensor rings, identifying the installation side of a wheel bearing with integrated sensor ring and revealing sensor ring damage. This, in turn, simplifies the time-consuming process of searching for defects and failures and allows more time for subsequent steps. That’s because sensor rings have been integrated into more and more car parts such as crankshafts and wheel bearings for years. These compact sensor rings for measuring speed and position are used in many vehicles. These days, most wheel bearings are equipped with a magnetic sensor ring.

MEcTEC

MECTEC Show a massive success

Comline team with Kevin O'Kane

019 came to a close with a bang as aftermarket leaders FG7 introduced something new and exciting to the Irish Automotive Aftermarket. MECTEC 2019 was pitched as an all-new expo designed to showcase the automotive aftermarket in a fresh and engaging manner, and boy did it deliver. Welcoming over 3,500 attendees the event, which was held at FG7’s Mid Ulster HQ, brought together Suppliers, Motor Factors, Dealers, Garages, Technicians and Students. On arrival it was clear to see this was more than just the ‘traditional trade show’, with the standard of exhibitions on offer exceptionally high, similar to that seen at international motor shows The level of support was evident with over 40 of the industries top suppliers in attendance. Setting the event apart even further was the ‘TEC’ in MECTEC delivering a seminar programme which saw leading industry experts providing insight into topics such as, friction materials, filter technology, battery care advice, training services, all vital information for those working in the industry. Speaking live from the event Kevin O’Kane, FG7’s Chief Operating Officer, and the man responsible 12- garageTRADER

for the creation and delivery of MECTEC said: “We are truly delighted with the response to our first MECTEC Expo. Right from the start, our goal was clear, MECTEC needed to be bigger and better than any trade event in the Irish Automotive Aftermarket space. We identified a gap and frankly a need for something new, we didn’t merely want to provide a shop front for our suppliers. “For me, MECTEC needed to add benefit to our audience, it had to deliver education, provide a platform for business interactions, and of course, bring everyone together in a fun social environment. “Judging by the reactions we have seen here over the three days, I feel we have successfully ticked all of these boxes. “I would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend, our groups members, staff & customers and I also would like to extend thanks to our exhibitors who raised the bar and helped us make MECTEC 2019 a success.” One such supplier was Comline; commandeering two exhibition spaces, the first comprising of an interactive garage scene complete

Brain Newell of ZF with technicians and a championship rally car, the second a 45sqft product display showcasing their high-quality range alongside a 6ft cyclone machine which challenged visitors to ‘become the filter’. Leigh Davies, Comline’s Group Marketing and Communications Manager, commented: “FG7 is a longstanding and extremely valued customer, as such, MECTEC was quickly identified as one of the most important dates on our calendar. “When Kevin introduced the

concept to us, it was immediately apparent that his ambitious plans closely aligned with our fast-paced business, and we were determined to work with him to make the most of the opportunity. “I am delighted to say the finished product has surpassed our expectations; the footfall has been excellent, the engagement is fantastic, and the whole event has been delivered to an extremely high standard. “We would like to congratulate Kevin O’Kane and the entire FG7 team for a job extremely well done.”

How to cure brake noise with Allied Nippon

A

llied Nippon is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of automotive friction products, supplying a plethora of OE, Private Label and Aftermarket clients. Famed for delivering premiumquality reliable products, the brand is well positioned to speak with authority on friction products and as such we have spoken with their director of braking Keith Ellis to ask for his insight on the historic problem of brake noise.

“Brake noise has been a common problem for drivers since motorised vehicles started to replace the horse and cart.” Said Keith Ellis, Allied Nippon, Director of Braking “Arguably, the most common form of noise is brake squeal; put simply, squeal is caused by vibrations that result from the interaction between a brake disc, brake caliper, and brake pad. This squeal is moreoften-than-not directly influenced by various internal and external factors including the temperature

of the disc or pad, the ambient temperature in which they are operating, the speed that the vehicle is travelling at and the pressure being exerted under braking. “The shape of a brake pad can also influence brake noise, particularly under light braking pressures; the wrong shape can result in excessive noise which is why you will see such a variation in pad shape by make and model. Here at Allied Nippon we fully appreciate the issue braking noise presents and have invested heavily in an array of noise prevention technologies including the development of our OE-type RMR backing shim which is fitted to the most popular references in our Aftermarket range.

Workshops that choose LuK clutches can ‘fit and forget’

R

EPXPERT, Alistair Mason, speaks candidly to Garage Trader about the quality of LuK clutches and why trusting the same components that were originally fitted by the vehicle manufacturer (VM) can save time and money for workshops: “Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) design, engineer and produce clutches to the strictest material and quality standards available – which is demanded by the VMs that place their trust in the likes of Schaeffler. “Price is and always will be a factor – we can’t escape that; however, 20- garageTRADER

quality, availability and valueadded services also play a crucial part when it comes to technicians selecting the components they choose to fit. In addition, from my experience, a good technician wants to complete the job first time, every time, to ensure their reputation remains intact amongst their customers. “A workshop can make good money by offering the best quality components available, as well as service, to guarantee customer satisfaction and loyalty.” Schaeffler offers a ‘complete repair solution’

“Schaeffler’s LuK brand is the market leader in the UK and one of just a handful of manufacturers producing genuine OE clutches. Every single component conforms to OE specifications and quality standards. “We believe technicians should make an informed choice as to whether they fit a genuine OE standard of clutch from an OE supplier, or one from an unapproved source that may not include all of the components required. The latter may not deliver the same drivability, reliability and durability expected by a vehicle

owner and the supplier may also not have the support systems needed in place if anything goes wrong. “Our objective is to deliver a ‘complete repair solution’, with everything needed to carry out a professional repair in just one box, all to 100% OE specifications. From a LuK perspective, that means technicians receive a complete clutch kit, including every ancillary component, free technical information, available through the REPXPERT service portal (www. repxpert.co.uk), direct one-on-one telephone support, live and online training opportunities – some of

McMillan

George and Jamie McMillan the autotesting Engineers

Jamie McMillan hard at work in Catalunya

G

eorge McMillan is well known in the Northern Ireland motor trade for his work, but many may not know that he is also an accomplished autotester. But it isn’t just behind the wheel that George McMillan shows his automotive expertise. He has developed a successful business at his workshop in Antrim that

36- garageTRADER

specialises in the maintenance and repair of luxury and performance cars. His son Jamie works for the M-Sport Ford Rally Team, and tells us, a bit like Jamie’s own path to M-Sport, McMillan Specialist Cars grew from a passion and interest.

Well known autotester George McMillan is Jamie’s father

“Dad used to work for the local Porsche dealer long before I was born, and then moved on to do teacher training with Toyota,’’ said Jamie. ‘’He was asked to carry on servicing Porsches for people and he did it as a hobby. He got a small workshop at home, and then a bigger workshop eight years

ago. Now he’s working out of Antrim with a number of full-time employees.” “He probably has forty-odd cars at any one time. Seventy or eighty per cent would be Porsche and the rest are Ferrari, Aston Martin and then a few Mercedes Benz and Audi.”

McMillan Jamie McMillan with M-Sport supremo Malcolm Wilson

Jamie reiterates that he was never forced to follow in his father’s footsteps, he’s always been allowed to make his own name and he has had the full support of his family the entire way. Having grown up in a family with motoring heritage, it might sound natural that Jamie would take such a move and make a career out of a passion. But his path was never paved for him. Despite his father George’s connection to the sport, it wasn’t always the obvious step. “He is really proud of what I’m doing. He’s always been really supportive, there’s no pressure to come back and work in the family business. He’s never been pushy; it was my choice to do what I’m doing.” He got a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University which led straight to his graduate role in M-Sport. He made the most of his time in education, and took on the role of team leader for Formula Student while in final year. It was an intense undertaking, but one that he says made him very aware of what he was getting himself into. “Formula Student was hard work. You can do it and say you’ve done it but not get involved in the project. I did football coaching but had to give it up for Formula Student. Unless you throw yourself

a driver. So to be making setup changes and running the car, it ticked all the boxes. People hear about the travel and think it’s the glamorous side of motorsport, but you learn that it’s not like that. Some places are nice but it takes it out of you, and you do have to do a lot of work. It’s not as easy as people think. You’ve to be

India in Formula One, there is the option for him to move across to the other opportunities open to him as engineer, but he maintains he’s happy to be rallying. Jamie also competes in autotesting with George when he can, and while he hasn’t had the opportunity to get home to do any autotest events in 2019 due to his extensive travelling, he does have the desire to get back to his roots and what got him hooked on the sport. “Dad has been involved in motorsport since he was a youngster. He did rallying, autotesting and night navigations. I was big into football when I was young and he never pushed me. But I did my own research and found out you could do autotests at 14 years of age.”

at it, you’re not doing it or yourself justice. Being able to work long hours and show dedication put me in good stead.” From the way Jamie talks, you can tell he was never forced to work with cars. His passion is undeniable and infectious. He has a desire to get as far up the ladder as he can, and do the best job he can. Since joining M-Sport two years ago, Jamie McMillan has got to travel the world and support the team in all sorts Jamie gets to compete in the occasional autotest when he is not of engineering roles. “I’ve away at a rally been mega busy. Between doing tests and events I’ve been out of the country for committed to long hours.” “I asked a few questions, showed 22 full weekends this year. I’ve an interest and he was happy to enjoyed it. On the face of it, being paid to travel to these exclusive locations and be around rally cars sounds like a lottery win in terms of careers. That’s true to a certain extent, but Jamie is keen to point out that although he does appear to be in an enviable situation, there is a lot more to it than that. “When I was at university it was my dream job to work directly with

The next step in the game for Jamie would be to work as an engineer on the World Rally Championship Fiesta full-time. Having done a one-year placement with Force

In the meantime, George has continued to compete at a high level. He was the reserve driver for Northern Ireland in the 2019 Ken Wharton Memorial International Autotest in Birmingham, a role Jamie has also played in recent years. When using a cordless sander the operator can freely move around the object. As no pneumatic hose is needed the risk of the hose causing defects on the surface being sanded is removed. Cordless sanders are more energy efficient compared to pneumatic tools. The sanders do not require oiling, which removes the risk of contamination from compressed air

supply. The Mirka DEROS electric sander has been used by thousands of professionals and been awarded with both the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award since its launch in 2012. At the time, Mirka was the first company to introduce brushless motor technology in a sander and the ergonomic Mirka DEROS is the lightest random orbital sander on the market. The Mirka DEROS now comes with smart features; it has an integrated vibration sensor and Bluetooth connectivity. Download and install the free myMirka app on your mobile phone and you can monitor the vibration levels of your Mirka DEROS in real time. By keeping track of vibration levels, you can make informed decisions that affect your health. Those in the sanding industry recognize that long-term exposure to vibrating hand-held machinery can be damaging, with health issues such as vibration white finger (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affecting thousands of industrial workers. At Mirka we put your health in focus. That’s why Mirka DEROS has low vibration levels when compared to other sanders on the market. With this new smart feature for measuring vibrations, however, it’s easier than ever to avoid the kind of long-term exposure that may be harmful. myMirka gives you real values in real time and a simple way to keep track of daily exposure levels. TRICO

TRICO: ‘Rear wiper blades an excellent upsell opportunity’

Rear wiper blades should be changed just as frequently as the blades at the front-end of the vehicle, according to the experts at TRICO, an original equipment (OE) manufacturer and supplier of wiper blade systems. That philosophy is not always followed, though, according to TRICO Senior Product and Brand Manager, Sam Robinson: “I’ve spoken to motorists in the past where their rear wiper blades haven’t been changed for five years! Therefore, there is definitely room for some education from both the motorist and technicians’ point of view, with the latter reaping the rewards.”

It’s an excellent upsell opportunity, while it ensures drivers have the best visibility possible. According to Sam, rear wiper blade sales account for just 10% of all blade sales, so workshops should offer a comprehensive service check and choose a brand that offers an extensive wiper programme to cover the needs of the market and seize their opportunity to earn extra revenue. Sam added: “Rear and front wiper blades should be changed annually. If not, aside from the obvious issue of impeding visibility, severely worn blades have been known to become damaged on metal or

plastic components, which may damage the windscreen or cause the blade to disengage. “There is an increasing number of vehicles with unique rear wiper blade designs. Although many blades look similar, they’re specially designed and manufactured, plus they’re specific in their fitment. The TRICO Exact Fit rear blade programme, for example, boasts excellent coverage to accommodate the eclectic mix of applications.” Indelibly marked with a yellow flash on the packaging, the Exact Fit rear blade programme contains

48 part numbers, all to OE quality, which provide even pressure distribution on the windscreen, are lightweight and protected against high UV. TRICO also offers unique connectors that cover up to two different arm types with the same connector, thus reducing the number of stock keeping units necessary. Sam said: “The range of specialty blades are designed exclusively for Exact Fit rear applications. These blade types cannot be serviced with a standard conventional wiper blade and, instead, have various connection styles and blade types, such as plastic, beam or metal.”

EXCELLENCE in every blade

Global leaders in wiper blade technology since 1917 For more than 100 years, TRICO® has been trusted to deliver premium wiper blade products to almost every major vehicle manufacturer worldwide. Today, we use this Original Equipment expertise to bring you reliable, innovative wiper blade products that come through at the moment you need them most.

Shipping of waste tyres to India to be banned C

ustomers in tyre depots rarely consider what happens to their old tyres when they purchase a new set, but this about to change…

In many instances, old tyres are shipped out to India where they are burnt, but new legislation in India looks set to ban this happening. India’s National Green Tribunal has directed the country’s Central Pollution Control Board to regulate the import of waste tyres, to prevent India from becoming a dumping ground for highly polluting hazardous waste material from other nations. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that he wants to ban the export of UK waste tyres to India. Portglenone company PPP are registered to safely and legally dispose of old tyres. Peter O’Kane is the managing director of PPP and he commented that, “With PPP managing your waste tyres you can have peace of mind that your waste stream is fully documented from collection to disposal insuring

your company fulfils its responsibility by disposing of its waste tyres at an approved and fully licenced facility. “The correct processing of used tyres minimises the impact on the environment and converts them into a useful, sustainable and valuable commodities and benefits the economy. However, this is only possible if used tyres are returned to responsible retailers who abide by a strict code of conduct and practice.

“To avoid used tyres entering illegal waste storage sites, it is the retailers’ responsibility to ensure their waste is transferred to an authorised waste carrier and check their transfer documentation to determine the end facility that will ultimately receive their material is licenced and is actually affiliated to that carrier. Your duty of care for the material you generate is not discharged simply transferring it to a carrier. “With PPP managing your waste tyres you can have peace of mind that your waste stream is fully

PPP also recently received a top award from Sustainable Ireland. This award recognises companies who can demonstrate a commitment and proven business case for sustainability.

Judges looked at how PPPs sustainable approach has improved performance, employee engagement, and investments that have enabled environmental, waste and energy efficiencies. RIVERPARK

Record Intake at Riverpark Training September 2019

S

ince January 2019 and with the appointment of Clare Murdock as Training and Development Coordinator, Riverpark Training has engaged with over 30 schools and attended various career events to promote motor vehicle apprenticeships. We have conducted over 120 personal interviews with applicants and have increased our 2019 intake to over 60 students this year. While industry-set entry tests can indicate a young person’s prior knowledge, it cannot truly reflect the individual and their career aspirations. Each of these interviewees were then put though a 1-day induction prior to engagement with an employer, or after employer acceptance, to ensure they had the employability skills to get the best start. As a dedicated and determined full-time team of three, we are delighted that all the hard work has appeared to pay off. We believe this commitment is necessary to provide the industry with the young people that best suits their needs. Our Vehicle Parts and Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair groups continue to grow; this has been 42- garageTRADER

possible as employers in this sector are starting to realise the benefits of investing in someone from the beginning of their career. As of December, it has all started over again with many school visits booked for the new year, many of these Colin and Clare will personally meet individual groups to discuss how a career in the motor industry can be a career for life. More medals this year again at World Skills UK Live Birmingham Our 5 strong team headed off to the UK National Skills Final held in the NEC Birmingham on the 20th-23rd November and were joined by their tutors on their final day to provide encouragement and support.

RIVERPARK This competition continues to grow stronger in skill level year on year and 2019 was no exception. On observing the competition from the side lines, it was anybody’s guess who would come out with the medals. On the Saturday after the main competition was over the vehicle refinishers had an additional skills challenge of celebrating the 100th year of the I.M.I. and had to place a design on a bonnet to reflect this. This challenge was won by Aubrey Whiteside who was awarded a professional airbrush kit. The results were: Gold in Car painting (Craig Kennedy Howell ARC) Silver in Autobody Repair (Conor Davison Nigel Whann ARC) Bronze in Autobody Repair (Graeme Nevin Wrights ARC C/ Duff) This latest medal tally at the UK National final brings the current medal total to 45, not including the 7 World Skills International medals over the last 10 years. This also places Riverpark Training ranked

12th out of 119 positions from 579 colleges and training providers submitting competitors for this UK final. Following their magnificent performance and being ageeligible for the next World Skills International event in Shanghai China 2021 the following have also made it into Squad UK to training for this event:

It is highly advisable that if you are a Senior Panel ATA

or have technicians requiring this as a re-accreditation that you register for this course. The new Senior Panel ATA has changed to incorporate joining materials by different rivet and bond techniques. Working on vehicles with high voltage will also be available as this is now becoming a risk to technicians and to employers, the module currently can be added to Senior MET but is not yet compulsory.

TTS

IMI Accredited Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Upskill Training Available at TTS

extremely positive, with post-training questionnaires, which cover TTS facilities, course content and trainer knowledge, rating all aspects highly. One trainee commented: “I found the assessor’s information relevant to my field and I’m very happy with the information I’m leaving with”, while others commended the trainers with comments such as “helpful”, “knowledgeable” and even “witty”, and for making them “feel comfortable”. TTS is also committed to integrating EV/hybrid training into its technical apprenticeships for those already enrolled on its technician apprenticeship programmes.

T

ransport Training Services is responding to industry demand by offering training on electric/hybrid vehicles for fully qualified technicians needing to upskill and qualify to work on electric/hybrid vehicles. Driven by targets set by government to enable adoption of zero emission cars and vans, there is a very real need to increase technician competence and in turn, consumer confidence that electric and hybrid vehicles can be maintained properly and safely. Recognising this early on, TTS set out to address the issue within Northern Ireland and now has trainers suitably qualified to deliver Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) TechSafe™ courses.

44- garageTRADER

As Northern Ireland’s premier motor industry training specialist, TTS has acquired three hybrid vehicles, including a brand new, top of the range Toyota RAV4, plus an additional new plug-in hybrid to ensure that learners are training on the most up-to-date vehicle specifications. TTS can offer a range of electric/ hybrid courses but for now is focusing primarily on the Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement qualification (ref 603/1468/0), since this is the most relevant and in-demand requirement currently. This is a two-day course for experienced mechanics/technicians, which enables successful candidates to work safely around EV/hybrid vehicles and includes vehicles that

may have damage to their high voltage system. This training reduces the risk of accidents with these high voltages and the qualification helps employers meet their ‘duty of care’ under the Electricity at Work Regulations, to prevent danger when carrying out work on electrical systems. Participants will be issued with internationally recognised certification upon completion of an EV course delivered at TTS’s Nutts Corner training facility, and their details will be held on the IMI Professional Register so that motorists can check if technicians at their chosen garage are able to work on their vehicle safely. So far, feedback from industry and from course participants has been

The Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has given its endorsement to the IMI TechSafe™ standards for people working on electrified vehicles. Martin Hutchinson, CEO of TTS added: “We continually strive to deliver practical training to Northern Ireland’s motor industry technical personnel so they can stay relevant in an industry that is making rapid technological changes. Giving technicians the necessary skills to safely work on high voltage vehicles is just one area that we are currently focusing on”. The next Level 3, two-day course at TTS, Nutts Corner is 28 and 29 January 2020 and is being offered for the introductory cost of just £299+VAT (including registration and certification fee) for a limited time only. Courses are limited to 10 delegates to ensure sufficient practical work opportunities.

Willis Insurance

Key Person Cover

I

f an employee that is crucial to the function of your business becomes disabled or dies, would day-to-day activity continue as usual or would disorder and uncertainty ensue? Would you be able to maintain the same level of business expectations and revenue stream? How will you cover for the financial loss of the employee or pay for a temporary replacement during his or her recovery? Key person insurance could help you answer these questions with confidence. It is designed to provide financial stability in a time of stress due to the sudden loss of a vital employee. Who Needs Key Person Cover? Many businesses benefit from key person insurance, such as those with the following employees: • Employees who would be

extremely difficult, time-consuming or expensive to replace (ex: central decision makers, chief executives and directors, vital sales managers or employees whose ideas have critical commercial impact) • Highly skilled employees with unique training • Employees with exclusive ties to key clients • Narrow profit margins where a staff loss would mean financial trouble • A need to protect their revenue stream from loss (for example, hospitals protecting against the loss of a high-earning, respected surgeon) • Concerns that a high revenueproducing client (ex: actor, writer or other entertainer) became disabled

or died and was unable to perform In the event a vital employee becomes disabled or dies, this type of insurance provides the company with income to make up for financial loss or use for temporary replacement costs. Before Purchasing Key Person Insurance • Estimate the value of your key employees. Think about the projects that would be lost without them, the amount of sales generated by them and the costs associated with replacing them. • Think about the amount of protection needed. There are several methods to calculate this, including using a multiple of salary or profits, payroll proportion, and the actual impact method.

• Create a business continuity plan that outlines business functions if you lose key employees. In addition to cover, having such a plan is vital. Requirements and Cover Options To obtain key person cover, the individual must usually be a consenting employee and you must illustrate that would incur substantial financial loss without him or her. To qualify as a key person, most insurers require that the employee’s salary be in a top percentage of the company. Qualifications vary based on the insurer. All key person policies are written specifically for the employee in question. To learn more, contact us at 028 90 329042 and talk to an expert at Willis IRM.
