Used Car Sales Down 4% V
ehicle history and data expert Cartell. ie recently announced the findings from the latest state of the market report in conjunction with BAC Auto Consulting. Used car sales for the first seven months of 2019 are down 4.2% including imports and down 4.4% excluding imports.
Used car sales have fallen every month this year over the same period in 2018 except for March, where the fall in used car sales in March 2018 helped deliver a 9% increase in total used car sales in March 2019, 6.3% increase excluding imports. Total used car imports hit 22.9% of all used car sales to the end of July 2019. This is up from 21.9% of all used car sales in 2018. The figure of 22.9% constitutes a record since Cartell has started recording this figure. This increase of imports impacting used car sales is expected to continue whilst the UK border stays open and the euro remains strong against the pound. The report states: “While the issue of an open or closed border between Ireland
and the UK is seen as the biggest issue facing Brexit, there is some irony that a closed border could actually be a good thing for parts of Ireland’s automotive industry according to the latest data from Cartell.ie Carstat database. Back in 2013, with a relatively strong euro against the British pound imports were flooding in at a rate of 2 for every 3 new cars sold. The collapse of the Euro in 2015 saw this drop to a ratio of 1:3 before rising again to a record of
almost 4 imports for every 5 new cars sold in 2018. However, the UK stumbling over Brexit saw UK businesses stockpiling in the run-up to the original March 2019 Brexit data which boosted UK GDP growth and strengthened the pound against the euro.” Despite the pound weakening since March total imports remain 5.4% down over the first six months of last year. The UK car market fell by 4.3%
for the first half of 2019 compared to the same period last year. Both markets are also seeing the introduction of the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test. This could see some UK dealers and manufacturers pushing new car sales in the run-up to September to clear out stock before the new regulations are mandated and to recover some lost sales. The political brinkmanship over Brexit could also keep the pound weak adding to the attractiveness of importing.

As a brand-new TPMS diagnostic tool with strong competitiveness, it provides automatic VIN identification and can achieve full-model, full-system automotive fault diagnosis, and has six types of commonly used service and reset functions. To complement Pilot TPMS, Launch has also unveiled the new RF-Sensor, a convenient and powerful solution for service shops that provide TPMS service. The universal TPMS sensor covers 95% of OE Parts, and as a radio frequency sensor it can be
programmed by Pilot TPMS for OE sensor replacement, via Over-theAir Programming (OTA). Offering over five years of battery life, key features include program capability before or after tyres’ mounting, alongside sensor activation that reads tyre pressure data, including pressure, tyre temperature and battery state, covering more than 98% of models with a tyre pressure system. Woodford Diagnostics was formed in 1994 by Robert Keith who has
been working within the motor trade from an early age. Initially the company’s main business was workshop based and carried out diagnostic work on motor vehicles. This also gave a great insight into various pieces of diagnostic kit. As Woodford Diagnostics grew, the workshop business was separated from the diagnostic equipment sales. 12,000 MOTOR INDUSTRY JOBS UNDER THREAT
T
he Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) recently issued their Quarterly Motor Industry Review Q2 of 2019 composed by Economist Jim Power. The main findings of the report are:
with the exception of electric cars and used car imports. External threats such as Brexit uncertainty, greater consumer caution and the ongoing growth of used imports continue to undermine new car sales.
The report makes for stark reading, despite the economy performing strongly, the environment for new car sales continues to remain very challenging.
Another factor dampening demand was the increase in the VRT on new cars in last year’s Budget, arising from the fact that no allowance was made by the Irish authorities for the first step in the move to the new WLTP testing regime.
Since the announcement of Brexit both new cars and commercial registrations continue to decline
Economist Jim Power has warned
check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
that “If the Government does not adjust VRT bands in Budget 2020 to take account of the WLTP
(Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) changes, the average price of a new car could rise by at least €2,500. While the recently published InterDepartmental Tax Strategy Group (TSG) paper on motor vehicle taxes makes a number of suggestions about taxation, this does not mean that these suggestions will eventually become part of Budget 2020. The price increase for the more popular mid-range model could rise by significantly more. In the current environment, such price increases would have a devastating impact on new car sales.” garageTRADER - 5

Air Plasma’s Versatility makes it the Perfect Choice for Automotive Repair
W
hether you need to fix an exhaust system, remove a bent or crushed bracket, replace a body panel, or fix up a frame; there is one tool that can do it all: air plasma. Its versatility makes plasma an indispensable tool for people who work in automotive There aren’t many other tools that can do what plasma can do. Today’s plasma systems are portable and efficient and come with many features to benefit auto repair shops. One such feature was created after work with the military. A product development team from Hypertherm, a leading manufacturer of plasma systems, was working to make it easier for the military to repair armored vehicles in remote locations. Going in, the team thought the military would want something that was extremely lightweight and compact. 66- garageTRADER
What they learned was quite different. Following a demonstration in which the team showcased a lighter, more portable version of its Powermax air plasma system, one of the service members held up his hands, separated them by about 76mm, and said, “The biggest improvement you could make, is to give your torch about this much more reach, with a really narrow tip.” This simple gesture and single comment prompted the design of extended length Powermax consumables. The extended consumables provide users with extra reach when cutting
or gouging in hard to access or confined spaces, such as inside an engine compartment or wheel well. It also reduces secondary operations and the need to utilize other equipment like a grinding wheel or oxy acetylene torch. Though plasma is best known as a cutting tool, plasma systems are also great at gouging. Plasma is an effective method of removing spot welds. Another benefit of plasma is its ability to cut the wide range of metal types found on today’s cars. From mild steel, to stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized, copper, cast iron, and even painted, rusted,
and dirty metal, plasma will cut it without damaging or warping the metal surrounding the piece getting cut. Auto repair shops also appreciate plasma’s ability to work anywhere that compressed air and an energy source are available. When hooked to a portable motor generator and a portable compressor or gas cylinder, a plasma system is truly mobile. And unlike oxyfuel cutting, which requires the use of a flammable gas, plasma is safer. When choosing an air plasma system, there are several factors to consider. Cut capacity and cut quality are at the top of most lists,
check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
HYPERTHERM
GT
Duty cycle is an approximation of how long a system can operate in a continuous cut within a 10-minute period before overheating. A duty cycle of 50 percent means a system can cut continuously for five minutes at full output before needing five minutes to cool down. A 50 percent duty cycle is normally more than enough for repair shops. Beware though as not all manufacturers determine duty cycle the same way. Some manufacturers will use a lower ambient temperature rating and/ or lower load voltage rating when testing to make their duty cycle appear higher.
ITS POTE THE POSSIB
EASE OF USE Simple operation is a requirement in a plasma tool as it allows you to get the job done faster with less headache and frustration. It also means people with little or no experience can get good results. Regardless of experience level, operators using plasma can get jobs completed quickly and with good quality, keeping time-sensitive projects on schedule. OPERATING COST
but system reliability, duty cycle, ease of use, and operating cost are also important. With that in mind, here are some additional factors you should consider before buying a new system. POWER OUTPUT AND SPEED People often equate system power with amperage. The thinking is that the system with the highest amperage will provide the most power. That isn’t necessarily true. What really determines power output is watts (or kilowatts.) To get that number you need to multiply amps by volts. It’s possible for a 30-amp system to
have more power than a 40-amp system if the 30-amp system has more volts. Another tip: look at cut speed ratings when comparing advertised cut capacities between manufacturers. If a manufacturer says a system can cut 13mm material, you’ll want to understand how fast the torch was moving as some manufacturers will overstate cut thickness by moving the torch at a very slow speed. PORTABILITY REQUIREMENTS Obviously, if you don’t plan to move around a lot, you can get away with a larger system.
check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
However if you plan to move your system around or use it in the field, you’ll want to take system size and weight into account. Fortunately, engineering advances mean you can now get a lightweight system without sacrificing power and performance.
When it comes to cost, it is ENDLESS P tempting to buy the system that CUTTING, E costs the least. However, it’s important to understand how much MARKING, M a system will cost over time. For instance, a system that costs less money to buy initially, but cuts slowly, inconsistently, or even stops working a few years after you buy it, is no bargain. You also need to look at consumable cost and consumable life since it can vary significantly from one brand of plasma to another. Longer consumable life reduces downtime for change-outs and lowers your consumable costs . In conclusionplasma’s ability to perform various applications, in almost any location, and on most Portable, state-of-the-art and endlessly metal types, forms and thicknesses gives it distinct over ® family deliv choose from, advantages the Powermax other cutting technologies.

TRICO launches new two-metre display that stocks full Exact Fit range
T
RICO has unveiled its new planogram design with signage, which allows retailers and motor factors to display the entire Exact Fit programme to their customers – using just a single two-metre bay.
The Exact Fit programme is a comprehensive range of direct fit, original equipment (OE) replacement blades, with almost 150 references giving 99% front and rear wiper coverage. This new display system means motor factors and retailers can display this full programme without compromising on space inside their branch – perfect for walk-in customers. Reducing stock keeping units (SKUs) by up to 35% compared to other OE brands is also a critical advantage for stockists, and TRICO is able to achieve this because its
unique clips will fit up to three arms in one. It also has a single pack philosophy, which gives added flexibility with stock and drastically reduces the number of SKUs required.
TRICO Senior Brand and Product Manager, Sam Robinson, said: “We’re delighted to reveal this new display and stylish consumer display signage. It is vitally important that we listen to customer feedback and show them that we’re working on new innovations, as well as continuously improving our products, to help them increase their sales and stock levels, and continue to provide the best tools to support their wiper blade sales, which we are confident we have achieved with this new layout.”
