JKC WIN BMW NATIONAL AWARDS JKC BMW Coleraine has plenty of good news to celebrate following another successful night at the “BMW Retailer of the Year Awards,” held recently in Barcelona. The family-owned firm from Coleraine were able to hold off stiff competition from over 140 BMW UK Retailers to claim the top prize in not just one, but three award categories: •

UK Retailer of the Year Customer Champion

UK Retailer of the Year – New Retail Sales

Overall UK Retailer of the Year Award – Runner Up The Customer Champion Award recognises an outstanding level of customer service across all areas of the business, whilst the New Retail Sales Award recognises excellence in key performance indicators across all aspects of the New BMW Sales operation. This accomplishment is made even more impressive as this is the third consecutive year that JKC has been recognised at the UK awards. These latest achievements build on JKC BMW’s New Retail Sales Award in last year’s ceremony and the Overall Dealer of the Year Award which they received in 2014.

Niall MacFlynn, Head of Business at JKC said “At JKC, we have some of the best people in the industry, so I am incredibly proud of what our team has achieved. To win even one of these categories would be great, so to bring three awards back to Coleraine is a fantastic honour for both our dedicated team and our loyal customers alike. Delivering a premium experience each and every time a customer visits JKC is at the very core of everything we do, so it’s great to have those efforts recognised by the manufacturer. Also, to finish as a runner-up in the most coveted award of the night, the Overall Retailer of the Year demonstrates the strength and depth of performance we have right across our business” BMW Group - The JKC team being presented with the awards. The first survey, completed by new car buyers, rates dealers on factors including the demeanour of sales people, price negotiation, after-sales service and the likelihood of recommending to a friend or family member.

The second survey targets industry associates, including car dealers, garages, repair shops and auto parts suppliers. As a ‘peer-topeer’ survey, this allows those in the industry to identify which car dealers (other than themselves) they would recommend to their family and friends. Based just off the M1 Motorway near Dungannon, Saltmarine Cars was established in 1969 by Neil Salt.

News NORTHERN IRELAND IS FAILING TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES Electric and hybrid cars have seen a 47% growth this year. Yet, according to the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), more still needs to be done to encourage motorists to make the switch from diesel and petrol engines to electric and hybrid alternatives. Though an increasing number of motorists are choosing alternatives, Northern Ireland is failing to keep up with the demand as the number of Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) significantly outweighs the number of charging stations with 5 plug-in vehicles to 1 charging connector. The IMI says Britain will fail to remove diesels and in turn improve air quality, if significant investment isn’t made to the number of charging stations across the UK. Furthermore, the IMI found insurance costs for ultra-low emission vehicles can be up to 50% higher than for petrol or diesels equivalents and warns these won’t become more competitive until more people are qualified to work on them.

Currently only 1% of all technicians have been trained to work safely on the highvoltage technology, of which almost all of them work exclusively for manufacturers franchised dealers. The IMI believes that the UK will fail to keep up with the global competition for the adoption of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) if the charging infrastructure isn’t drastically improved - and more technicians are given the training required to service these high powered vehicles. A government-commissioned report estimates that the new vehicle technologies could contribute £51bn to the UK economy by 2030. Steve Nash, Chief Executive at the IMI, said: “Much more needs to be done if the UK is to realise the £51bn contribution from new vehicle technologies that the government is pursuing by 2030. That is contingent upon the UK being a

leading player, but we must start with the basics by ensuring that we have the infrastructure and skills base to support motorists making an easy transition from petrol and diesel to electric and hybrid. A greater and more rapid investment in the charging infrastructure and financial support to help those working in the service & repair sector, most particularly the independent operators, to gain the skills to work on the new technologies.

“The IMI is continuing its campaign for the introduction of a licensing scheme for those working on the high voltage vehicles, and we’ve asked the government to contribute £30m to support the uptake of the necessary training. In order to facilitate this and help clarify the competencies required for working on these vehicles, the IMI has launched a new Electric & Hybrid Vehicle qualification along with the appropriate support materials.”

In March 2017, Givran Autoparts (Belfast) rebranded to Car + Color Ltd and moved to new purpose built, state of the art premises on Belfast’s Boucher Road. The name change was planned over the past few years as it was felt that it better represents the diversity of the product base that the company offers. The new premises better accommodates the business needs of Car + Color, along with facilitating its continued growth. The new premises were purpose build for Car + Color based on the functions of the business on a day to day basis. Work started last November to what was an empty shell of a unit, with the steelwork being brought in to create a new mezzanine level as well as shelving to hold the company’s ever-increasing range of stock. To cope with demand, a pallet racking system was added which can hold up to sixty pallets. Original Parts

The case for Original Equipment promoted at Automechanika The Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) attracted a record number of garage owners and technicians onto its stand at Automechanika Birmingham 2017. OESAA’s very own on-stand seminar theatre proved to be a popular hit at the event as industry expert guest speakers Andy Savva and Frank Massey drove home the benefits of buying genuine parts from OE suppliers to a garage’s reputation and profit-margin. Andy and Frank offered valued tips and advice to help educate garage owners and technicians about the confidence-boosting effects of choosing genuine OE suppliers’ parts from their local motor factors, while also warning about the potential pitfalls of cheaper alternatives. “We’re explaining how genuine parts can benefit your workshop businesses in terms of reputation and the profit margins they can bring,” Andy explained Demonstrating the shocking reality of sub-standard ‘equivalents’, examples of cross-sectioned OE and vastly inferior non-OE components were also a big talking point at the exhibition. OESAA’s Eunan MacGuinness said: “We’re getting garage owners and technicians to understand why they should be using genuine parts from OE suppliers. “We’ve got a non-OE torsional vibration damper that, from the outside, looks like it’s got a rubber seal in but actually it’s just a little groove that’s been cut out. “It weighs twice as much as the OE part, there’s no dampening in it at all so it’s actually going to create more vibration somewhere else on the vehicle.” Other cross-sectioned components appearing on the stand included wheel bearings and gearbox mountings. “The majority of technicians will have only ever seen a complete part before, so the when they look inside these parts and see the difference, it is quite shocking for them,” Eunan added. Andy added: “We saw a lot more 20- GARAGETRADER

garages this year and we had some really interesting conversations with them on the OESAA stand. “If you want to stay in this industry and succeed, it’s essential to be aware of what you’re fitting.” Presenting at several seminars during Automechanika Birmingham 2017, Andy Savva held his audiences with his usual captivating and upliftingly positive views on the talents of the trade and with the backup of OESAA, help protect the interests of motor businesses.

factory originally, the OE part. Then, at least I know it has passed through some kind of a process or assurance to reach a level that is suitable for the likes of BMW/

Another frustration for me is the constant use by most garage owners who use terminology like fullyskilled technicians, fully-equipped workshop; it’s impossible for the

Mercedes/Citroen etc. to use in the production of their vehicles. And that is how I base it. OESAA has come together to try and urge people to listen, to give them an opportunity to understand that some aftermarket companies and their components are really not good enough. And, the price gap between an aftermarket and an OE part is shrinking.

consumer to differentiate. ‘Fullyskilled’ is a myth as our industry is an environment of continuous learning. By associating yourself with OESAA members and OE parts, you have the ability tap into their academies and the people who physically make the parts, along with cost-effective (and sometimes even free) training.

Q - What were the highlights of your presentation? A - The essence really is first of all; that like-minded Tier 1 parts manufacturers have come together as a group to form OESAA (Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association) to try to dispel some of the claims made by some aftermarket parts manufacturers suppliers that their parts are of matching quality. My view is that because the industry at the moment doesn’t have a standard i.e. parts are not certified, everybody’s perception of quality varies massively. There are so many aftermarket parts manufacturers suppliers where, when a part is copied, there is always an influence of price, and I think when there’s always an influence of price, there is always a compromise somewhere. As a garage owner, and as someone who wants to give an expert service, value for money, and do the job right, I advocate fitting the same parts that were fitted in the

Q - How does this affect the market? A - For example, the difference in clutch prices could be £45 or £65, so when the job takes four to five hours, is it really worth the risk? The fact is most garage owners using these aftermarket parts are not even making sufficient profit on these parts; Our industry, as a whole, has always been very price-sensitive. Consumers come to us already in that price-sensitive mode.

Why shouldn’t we, as garage owners or technicians, tap into that? I’m only as good as my stakeholders; that’s my staff and my parts suppliers. The only commodity that garages sell is labour, parts are a by-product of how much labour you sell. The garage business environment is already challenged by the lack of skill across our industry, why would anyone make the job harder and possibly leave themselves vulnerable by not using the right OE part?

Adhesives PREVENTING NUT & BOLT SELF-LOOSENING – WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS? Many applications require a dismountable, yet durable, screw joint but often this freedom to dismantle comes at a price because the chosen securing method has limitations. Many of the traditional thread locking devices are unable to maintain bolt tension and clamping forces resulting in premature failure and potentially, costly downtime. Why assemblies fail Threaded assemblies generally fail because of a loss of bolt tension, the main causes of which are relaxation and self-loosening. Relaxation results in a change in bolt tension which leads to reduced clamping forces. This effect is mostly triggered by settling – pressure-induced smoothing of the surface roughness – or creeping, the time-dependent yielding of substrates when loads exceed the compressive strength of the material; clamping gaskets are a typical example. If the elastic capacity of the assembly is inadequate, for example, if bolts are too stiff or the wrong length to diameter ratio is selected, there can be no compensation for loss of bolt tension. Self-loosening is caused by any type of dynamic load, such as vibration or changes in temperature, insufficient clamp load and poorly fitting parts, allowing relative movements to increase the risk of self-loosening. These load changes lead to short-term frictionless situations where the bolt unwinds from the nut. The sum of these very small movements ultimately results in the loosening of the threaded assembly. While relaxation can only be reduced by changes in parts design - such as the length to diameter ratio - or the use of elements, selfloosening can only be avoided by using appropriate thread locking devices. Thread locking options Essentially these fall into two

camps, mechanical methods and adhesives. There are benefits from using mechanical devices but due to gaps between the threads, their ability to withstand vibrational loosening is compromised. Thread locking adhesives resist vibrational loosening as they fill all the voids between the nut and bolt. This can be demonstrated by comparing a range of joints, secured in different ways, in accelerated vibration tests on a transverse shock machine. Initially the time taken to loosen a nominal ‘naked’ nut and bolt, tightened to a typical 80% proof load, was determined. From a bolt tension of 30kN, it came loose after just 15 seconds. As you can see from the graph, a spring washer fared no better, while a nylon ring nut lasted around 25 seconds. A distorted locknut achieved a little longer, although most of the bolt tension quickly disappeared. However, the joint secured with thread locking adhesive did not fail at all and exhibited no loss of bolt tension. Quite simply, this is because the joint is completely filled with adhesive, presenting no opportunity for loosening. Better and better All thread locking adhesives under the Loctite brand are anaerobic, which means they only cure in

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

the absence of air. Indeed, it was the very problem of vibration that led Dr. Vernon Krieble – the pioneer of Loctite adhesives – to develop anaerobic adhesives. This technology enables the adhesive, when applied to a bolt, to stay liquid almost indefinitely until the nut is applied. With no air in the contact areas, the adhesive soon solidifies to a tough thermoset plastic. Although this is a relatively mature technology, advancements continue to be made. There is now a huge range available offering differences in viscosity, strength, temperature resistance, chemical resistance, oil tolerance, cure speed and hardness/ flexibility. Products are now also rated for higher temperature use and are more tolerant of surface contaminants. Continuous development of product chemistry is especially important in the light of changes relating to CLP Regulations. This is a European Regulation on classifications, labelling and packaging of chemicals that has been implemented in stages since 2009. The Loctite Health and Safety range is a good case in point in this regard. When these products were introduced, their chemical components required no hazard Figure 3 labelling but that would not

be the case today. Continuous development, however, has seen their formulation change in line with these new regulations and users can therefore be assured they are adopting the best practice in terms of workplace safety. Real life applications So how is adhesive thread locking being applied in the engineering world? An example that demonstrates this method’s ability to withstand an extreme, high vibration environment is on a snow drive jam nut within the clutch assembly of a snowmobile. In a similarly safety-critical application, a manufacturer of tow hitches and couplings is using a thread locking adhesive to secure the grub screw in the pin that retains the trailer on the vehicles. Again, there is no margin for failure. In summary, thread locking adhesives not only resist vibration but also protect against shock and thermal cycling, seal against corrosion and prevent galling. In addition, the joints provide better clamp retention than mechanical clamping devices and offer straightforward disassembly using correctly specified tools. Tech Tips

First Line Technical Tips

What Technicians Need To Know About Installing Land Rover Handbrake Shoes

First Line, is dedicated to assisting its customers with as much information as possible, which has recently been demonstrated through their rejuvenated WebCat portal. As part of this development, the company has released technical information regarding the handbrake shoes on the Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery, which addresses the complete process of inspection, adjustment and bedding in of the parking handbrake shoes (First Line part numbers BBS6394 and BBS6416). Both of these applications are fitted with Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) modules, which control the handbrake shoe mechanism electronically via an actuator. EPB problems will develop if the handbrake shoes are worn, in need of replacement, corroded, or more importantly, if the adjustment is 24- GARAGETRADER

not checked and set correctly. An incorrect adjustment can cause the small teeth inside the unit to break or the small adjuster nut to over tighten and become jammed at its maximum travel. If the vehicle is fitted with new rear brake discs or parking brake shoes, it is imperative that the parking brake shoe adjustment and bedding in procedures are carried out in full. Failure to do so may result in the premature failure of the EPB module, which is not a handbrake shoe fault. First Line also advises that every two years, or if the vehicle has been driven in muddy conditions for more than 50 miles, a full inspection of parking brake shoes is carried out. If the vehicle is stationary and there is a screeching noise when applying or releasing the EPB - possibly with a parking sensor flashing on

the dashboard - it’s likely that the EPB actuator needs replacing. In this instance, the EPB module has over travelled and become jammed, locking on the brakes and triggering the parking sensor to flash on the dashboard. This can happen as a result of the vehicle being driven with the handbrake applied, causing excessive lining wear, noise and heat build-up, ultimately damaging the rear braking system. Early stages of this problem can be identified when the vehicle is moving, if there is a screeching or rubbing noise coming from rear brakes and the EPB actuator is working fine, then a full inspection of the parking brake shoes will need to be carried out and corrected as soon as possible. If there is no screeching but there is shoe drag, then the technician will need to carry out an inspection and evaluate and fix problems caused by any

heat damage. Carrying out an inspection of the parking brake shoes: 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Using a suitable diagnostic tool, drive the parking brake to the mounting position. 3. Take out the 30amp fuse for the EPB from the battery junction box to isolate the EPB electrical circuit. 4. Remove rear wheels, calipers and discs. 5. Check condition of the parking brake shoes, springs and back plate. 6. Look for signs of shoe drag. This may be evident through excessive shoe lining or drum wear. There may also be evidence of heat buildup on the shoes, drums, discs or other internal components. 7. Remove the shoes from the back plate. 8. The shoe linings should be a minimum of 2mm thick. If there is

Tech Tips

evidence of heat build-up damage to any of the components, replace the shoes. 9. Clean any build-up of dust from drum and shoes. Clean the friction face of the shoe and remove any metal shards from the shoe lining. Make sure the back plates and shoe supports are free of corrosion, as these should be smooth and clean. 10. Lubricate the backing plate shoe support platforms with appropriate brake grease. Care should be taken with the hold down clips during fitting, as they can become over stressed. Always make sure the parking brake shoes are held against the back plate. If in any doubt about the clips then replace with new ones. 11. If there is evidence that handbrake shoe drag has caused excessive heat build-up in the disc, i.e. brake shoe linings separating from the shoes, and if the brake discs are significantly discoloured, the brake discs should also be changed. 12. If there is evidence of heat damage then also check the parking brake cables. Look for heat damage at the cable ends. Check that the cables are correctly attached by releasing the outer cable retaining nuts from the back plates and pulling on the cables. The cables should not detach from the handbrake. 13. Ensure that the E clips are

installed to the outer brake cable ends in the correct groove. If the parking brake cables are damaged then they will need to be replaced. 14. Refit the outer cable retaining nuts and torque to 8Nm (6lbft). 15. Re-fit the brake discs and calipers. Refit the 30amp fuse. 16. Carry out the parking brake shoe & lining adjustment procedure in full. The parking brake shoe & lining adjustment procedure 1. Raise and support the vehicle. 2. Remove rear wheels. 3. Using a suitable diagnostic tool, drive the parking brake to the mounting position. 4. Line up the access hole with the indicators located on the back plate. 5. Remove the access plug. 6. Locate the parking shoe adjuster. 7. Use a flat blade screwdriver as a lever to displace the parking brake shoes. 8. Note: The movement of the parking brake shoe will be small and may not be felt when levering, but failure to displace them will result in incorrect clearance at the adjustment step. 9. Using the screwdriver, rotate the handbrake shoe adjuster to extend it until the brake disc is locked ‘hand’ tight. Do not apply excessive force to the handbrake shoe adjuster, as this may result in damage to the

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

parking brake system. 10. Using a suitable marker, mark the position of the brake shoe adjuster. Rotate the adjuster back EXACTLY one full revolution (10 clicks) until the mark can be seen again. 11. The wedge adjuster must be correctly seated to make sure the parking brake cable is correctly adjusted. 12. Loosen the wedge adjuster Allen screw half a turn. Tap the brake disc lightly with a soft face mallet around the parking brake shoe location within the brake disc. 13. Tighten the wedge adjuster Allen screw to 6Nm (5lb.ft) Re-fit the access plug. 14. Repeat for the other side. 15. Take the vehicle out of the mounting position using the diagnostic tool or by operating the parking brake two times. 16. Check the operation of the actuator. Check the Actuator Operation 1. Ensuring that all diagnostic codes are cleared from the EPB module fault memory, select gear position ‘Neutral’. 2. Select gear range ‘Low’ (There should not be any abnormal screeching coming from the EPB. If there is, then the EBP actuator may be damaged and in need of replacement).

3. Apply and release the EPB switch three times. 4. Recheck for fault codes, there shouldn’t be any! The parking brake shoe bedding in procedure This procedure needs to be carried out when the EPB, handbrake shoes or the rear discs have been replaced. 1. With the engine running, press the brake pedal fully on and off three times. On the third press, hold the brake pedal down. While the pedal is down, pull the EPB switch upwards four times, then downwards three times, within 10 seconds. 2. The dash display will then show ‘Parking Brake Bedding in Cycle Active’ or something similar. If this does not appear, release the brake pedal and carry out the first point again. 3. Drive at least 19mph up to a maximum of 29mph then apply the EPB switch until the vehicle stops. Then wait 60 seconds or drive one mile to let the brakes cool down, then repeat the process. If the engine stops or is driven at more than 30mph, the bedding in process will be cancelled. This procedure needs to be completed 10 times and after the 10th time, the bedding in mode will switch off automatically.

Aftermarket TRICO EXACT FIT BLADES AWARDED FOUR STARS IN AUTO EXPRESS WIPER BLADE TEST

KYB Suspension Solutions TRACK ROD REMOVAL TOOL KIT (4 PIECE) STOCK No. 42397

TRICO is delighted with the results following the recent ‘Best wiper blades: 2017’ group test, in which the TRICO Exact Fit range was rated four stars out of five. Whatever conditions and treatment the wiper blades are subjected to, Trico recommends that for optimum safety and performance, wipers blades be changed every six to twelve months. Auto Express tested nine sets of wiper blades and key benchmarks were: a clean wipe that did not

leave smears, quietest designs on a dry screen, good clear instructions which are essential for simple fitting, and the price. ‘Auto Express reported: ‘A very impressive debut for TRICO’s Exact Fit. The blade performs exactly as the name suggests – it was the easiest on test to install. There are no added adaptors, and the blade simply clicks into place with ease. The jointless structure gives the Exact Fit a good balanced wipe.’

Lock Wire Kit Although primarily used in motor racing, using safety wire to secure components finds many applications in high performance and classic road cars also. Lock wire or safety wire is a type of positive locking device that prevents fasteners from loosening due to vibration as well as other forces. Safety wiring also serves as a visual indicator that the fasteners have been properly tightened.

Typically, the wire is threaded through a hole drilled into a fastener or part, then twisted and anchored onto a second fastener or part, then twisted again. It’s especially useful for critical areas such as suspension and brakes, but it’s also very useful for securing other components, such as keeping exhaust manifold bolts, or remote oil filter mounting bolts from becoming loose. The two drilling jig kits from Gunson (part number 77080 Metric or 77118 Imperial), include both a nut jig and a bolt jig. The metric bolt jig suits six bolt sizes: 6 x 1.0, 8 x 1.0, 8 x 1.25, 10 x 1.25, 10 x 1.5 and 12 x 1.5mm. The imperial

The nut drill jigs clamp the nut very securely and lets an accurate hole be drilled through two adjacent flats of the nut. Autoelectro identifies and solves Toyota and Mini technical challenges Autoelectro, the UK’s largest independent remanufacturer of starter motors and alternators, continues to provide technicians with the latest up-todate technical information, to ensure accurate diagnosis and correct fitting, with the latest two bulletins focusing on Toyota and Mini models. Focusing on the Toyota first, a problem has been discovered with the ignition switch and wiring harness on the Aygo 1.4 D-4D (2005-2012). The issue can cause various complications, which can prevent the vehicle from starting: the vehicle could ‘crank’ but fail to start; the ignition switch could stick in the start position, or the starter motor could run but not disengage. If these problems arise, the technician should replace the ignition switch and check the wiring harness – replacing it if required. There are other symptoms, associated with the ignition switch and wiring harness, which could indicate a starter motor failure: • • • • • •

Blue colour on armature shaft Rattling when the starter motor is shaken Burning smell emanating from the starter motor Damaged teeth found on the starter motor Leaking varnish from the starter motor Melted, burnt, discoloured or broken wire connected from the solenoid to the starter motor body

Should the symptoms show, the starter motor should be replaced 32- GARAGETRADER

– with Autoelectro part number AEU1260. ‘Fitting error causing engine coolant leak’ Meanwhile, Autoelectro has recognised a trend – affecting part number AEC1868 – that has prompted the Bradfordbased remanufacturer to release another bulletin. It was created after reports surfaced of alternators fitted to the Mini R50/R52/R53 1.4 and 1.6 petrol (2001-2009) – and all vehicles with W10 engine codes from 2003-onwards – being returned, subject to warranty claims, due to the drive belt slipping and, consequently, causing a charging fault. After an investigation conducted by Autoelectro’s team of experts, it has been determined that a fitting error – rather than a fault

with the unit – was causing the vehicle’s engine coolant to leak onto the drive bracket, causing the drive belt to slip. During its analysis, the experts discovered that the coolant pipe, which runs parallel above the alternator and across the mounting brackets, was not being detached or moved into a safe position when removing the original alternator. Therefore, the pipe rubbed against the alternator mounting bolts, causing a coolant leak, which

dripped onto the alternator and drive belt and resulting in the drive belt slipping. In all cases, the technician must ensure that the pipe is clear from the mounting bolts when replacing the alternator; if the pipe is damaged, it must be replaced. Failure to abide by the diagnosis and fitting instructions of both technical bulletins, may cause the replacement parts to fail and the warranty become invalid.

Compressors Independent garages urged to rethink compressed air systems to enable growth

Independent garages and body shops are being urged to rethink their compressed air systems if they are to create adaptable and flexible premises, which can accommodate rapid growth as the electric vehicle market experiences unprecedented growth. The message comes from air and pneumatics specialist John Guest, at a time when the independent garage sector is proactively upskilling vehicle technicians to cope with a projected increase in electric vehicle enquiries. An independent academic report published by Professor Jim Saker of Loughborough University recently estimated that 320,000 jobs could be created and £51bn per year generated for the UK economy if the government backs electric cars. If the independent sector is going to enjoy some of these rewards, John Guest insists that garages and body shops need to be able to scale up their premises 34- GARAGETRADER

very quickly, and that having rigid, inflexible compressed air systems could stall this growth. Roger Goodwin, Business Development Manager for Compressed Air at John Guest commented: “Many independent garages are operating with limited space and constantly looking for new ways they can refit their workshops to gain greater space for customers, vehicles, and staff. However, many workshop owners have limited budgets and resources, making it difficult to repeatedly uninstall old metal or glued compressed air systems, and fit new systems as the interior of the garage changes. By investing in more modular and re-usable type compressed air systems, independent garage owners can exercise greater control over their working spaces, and quickly adapt to the immediate and planned garage needs, in a very costeffective way”.

John Guest recommends that garages seek out more modular compressed air systems, such as those that utilise innovative push-fit fittings and pipe. These provide a secure connection from the compressor receiver to airline service components, through to the complete ring main and take off points. And because they can be installed using a push-fit connection, complex systems can be installed, uninstalled, and refitted more rapidly, reducing operational downtime. The fact that many garage and body shop owners can self-certify themselves to re-install pipework and re-fit compressed air systems is also an advantage and can further help owners refurbish and expand their workspaces quickly. Any system which puts the business owner in control of installation can help to create more flexible and adaptable workspaces, conducive to growth and expansion.

Roger Goodwin advised: “As the electric vehicle market grows, independent garages and body shops will want to take advantage of increased business and will be looking to re-evaluate their working spaces to ensure that they can accommodate these projects. Whilst it is often safe for some technicians to install their own compressed air systems, they need to have a level of understanding of how the system works. It’s important to always decompress the system, and ensure there are no mechanical obstructions in the pipework. When you connect the pipes together again, always let the compressed air system reach its operating pressure (generally up to 10 bar) so that you can perform an accurate pressure test. Follow this up with a proof pressure test at 1.5 x working pressure to ensure that the system is operating to its optimal level.”

3M Painting

World Class Painter appointed 3M’s new NI Manager Former World Skills bronze medallist and Bodyshop Painter of the Year Jonathan Lloyd is the new Area Manager for the Automotive Aftermarket Division (AAD) of 3M. Trevor Doyle previously held that position but he retired at the end of last year and Jonathan was appointed to the post in March, having had a very successful career in a number of bodyshops in Northern Ireland. Jonathan’s father was a painter in Dencourt Motors and by the time he reached A Levels, Jonathan knew he wanted to pursue other passions. He joined up with Colin Hagan at Riverpark Training (then known as Blackwater Training) and in 2004 he was a finalist in the Bodyshop Young Painter competition. Jonathan scored back to back wins in that competition in 2005 and 2006 and qualified for the 2006 World Skills Finals in Japan where he won the Bronze Medal for painting. After graduating from Riverpark, Jonathan worked firstly at Prestige Cars in Carrickfergus, then for Agnews Bodyshop in Belfast and then for nine years in Nigel Whanns Accident Repair Centre in Ballymena. In between time, he also won the 2011 Professional Bodyshop Painter of the Year Award and an IMI Special Achievers award Jonathan pays particular credit for his enormous success to Colin Hagan at Riverpark and his tutor at the time, Jonny Bradley. “Without the two of them, I would never have succeeded at the level I attained,” says Jonathan. “Their commitment and the time they put in was fantastic.” 3M products are used at Riverpark Training and Jonathan knows that the company produces top quality equipment. “I used 3M products when I was painting so it’s great that being a world class painter I can recommend 3M as world class products for painters,” comments 38- GARAGETRADER

RAPID REPAIR UNIT FITS DYNAMIC WORKSHOP Based on traditional down draft spray booth air flow, the LAGOS rapid repair system can recycle up to 100% of its own air flow, depending on the application. From sanding to painting, this unit reduces process costs by as much as 85%. The industry as we know it, is under massive pressure to reduce costs in order to sustain a profitable future. Repairers are wasting valuable resources by continuing to paint small jobs/ low cost jobs in a traditional spray booth. LAGOS is one of the world’s only true bespoke repair facilities producers. Jonathan Penny, MD of Shop Bodyshop Direct said, “We are seeing an increasing demand from customers to reduce repair process times and costs. To this end, we have worked tirelessly with LAGOS to produce a Rapid Repair system that truly is a perfect fit for our dynamic market”. Denis Dineen, owner of Dineen Crash Repair, Co. Cork said, “We decided that fast repair processes were an absolute must for our organisation. When we set out on the path to look for such equipment, we had no idea that we would end up with such a unique

piece of equipment. We had noted smaller and less expensive units but feared that our technicians would underutilize them after a period of time. Our technicians now prefer

Product compatibility can impact quality refinish outcomes Axalta Coating Systems has specifically formulated the individual products in each of its three premium global refinish brands – Cromax, Spies Hecker and Standox – to achieve outstanding results while helping refinishers to work productively, energyefficiently and quickly. However, that outcome can be compromised if products are used in the wrong combination or with nonproprietary, inferior paint products. Kevin Welling, Training Academy Manager for Axalta Coating Systems in the UK and Ireland, explains, “most paint systems consist of a coloured or clear varnish which is mixed with a so-called ‘cross-linker’, usually an isocyanate, to form chemical bonds with the resin in the paint. The formation of these chemical bonds determines the hardness of the paint. If too little isocyanate is added, the necessary chemical bonds between the varnish and the resin are not formed and the paint stays ‘soft’. Our technical data sheets specify exactly what ratio of hardener needs to be mixed with a given topcoat to produce a finished 42- GARAGETRADER

paint that is hard, but still flexible enough to resist scratches, the effect of stone chips, etc.” Axalta calculates the ratio of the hardener based on its isocyanate content. If refinishers substitute the recommended hardener with another one, the isocyanate levels may be completely different and the refinisher is at risk of facing drying issues, problems of paint adherence, insufficient hardness of the dried paint, amongst other things.

activated properly.” To achieve correct activation, the refinisher would have had to use two to three times the amount of non-proprietary hardener than he did. Had he done so, the large volume consumption of hardener would have resulted in significantly higher costs to the bodyshop and led to VOC emissions that contravene regulations because of higher solvent use. “What might initially have

appeared as a cost saving – buying a cheaper hardener - turned out not to be one. The incorrect product mix severely compromised the quality of the repair and cost the bodyshop time and money, and could have affected the relationship with the vehicle owner if it had not been resolved. This is an excellent example of how vital it is to adhere to product data sheet recommendations and to use fully compatible systems,” concludes Welling.

Welling says, “recently, a bodyshop contacted the UK team because it was suddenly experiencing problems. The topcoat was taking a long time to dry and was not adhering to the substrate properly. After investigation, our specialist technician discovered the refinisher had used a nonproprietary and incompatible hardener with an isocyanate content that was less than half that of the recommended product. As a result, the topcoat had not been CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE: www.garagetrader.co.uk

Riverpark Training

Riverpark Training now set to train Vehicle Fitting, Business Administration and Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. Riverpark Training now have a contract with the Department for the Economy to deliver additional areas in the “Motor Industry” We will be rolling out new training areas in September this year and these will include light vehicle mechanical and vehicle fitting. Built on the close working relationships we have developed with the accident repair sector, we now intend to develop a bespoke training programme for light vehicle maintenance and repair and vehicle fitting. We will be seeking good quality apprentices and setting specific practical and theory tests prior to admission on the course. We have gained support from three vehicle manufactures to date, to supply training vehicles and manufactures training material.

44- GARAGETRADER

As our fundamental training is accident repair we have hired a new tutor to develop this strand and the emphasis will be on quality. Quality of selection, quality of support, quality of training and quality of outcome. The number of candidates will be limited as we believe that it is better to have limited class sizes with dedicated students rather than larger class sizes and more distracted students. To attract the good calibre of student they need to be employed and therefore we have decided to use the ApprenticeshipNI strand. We will be interviewing potential students between now and September and we will be interviewing and assessing each one with a vocational tutor present. Then a 3-day induction and only after this stage will be suggesting offers of employment. I am aware there are training programmes that offer students to employers at no cost but these were only devised to provide work placement experience and a stepping stone to employment. An apprentice that is employed has more commitment to his employer and to his training, as we have proven in our accident repair strands, we can make these apprentices profitable to their employer within three months.

If you are considering investing in the future of your business and would like to hear more about what we have planned for this September’s intake, please contact us and we will explain how we could tailor the training we do to suit your needs. Colin Hagan Training Manager 02890342400

He had to complete colour matching, wet on wet application, masking tasks and carry out a spot repair and polish to a quality standard. Connor was well prepared as he attended a pre-competition day with David Frizell. This paid off very well as not only did Connor win as the highest score on the day he also was highest score overall of the three day SkillAuto competition. Connor will now have to wait until September to receive official confirmation of his place in the national final that could see him compete in “World Skills 2019”. Two other competitors from North West Regional Collage who are carrying out their apprenticeship at Lloyd Cooke ARC have also got through to the regional heats. That represents a total of six apprentices out of eighteen throughout the UK in this selection heat are from Northern Ireland. All to date have attended training at Riverpark to prepare them for the challenge, usually on Saturdays to tweak their skills and improve their chances of getting through to the SkillAuto final, if they are successful and are age eligible they could be competing in Kazan Russia 2019.

She has also been informed that if she is in the top four, that means she will now be invited to the “Bodyshop Awards” in Birmingham in September. Ruairi was in a similar situation up against Thatcham trained Level 3 apprentices, he like Rachel performed very well on the day and is also predicted to be in the top 4. Ruairi is also in the SkillAuto competition at the end of June and could end up in a national final as well.

Riverpark Training GT we always have done and repair as we did 10 years ago. Well I have found such a candidate, Arthur Tussik on youtube will show you how he can replace a second-hand section to a modern BMW vehicle. The really scary thing is that this could be any untrained technician who does not understand the vehicle they are repairing. A lot of vehicles offered for salvage at cat “D” or cat “C”, are currently being purchased by people who do not have a good understanding of correct repair methods and salvage auctions are happy to offload these vehicles to anybody without any traceability of where they have gone or how they potentially could be repaired. These vehicles are currently ending up on our roads, as a cheap purchase but potentially a very dangerous vehicle not only to the owner but to whoever they have a collision with. We expect high quality of safety in the cars we now drive and manufacture’s have made incredible efforts to meet this

demand. Why then are vehicles that have structural damage to complex steel allowed to be sold to anyone who pays a £50.00 joining fee. The photo below is of a 2004 Vauxhall Vectra repaired incorrectly and subsequently damaged on a Thatcham test rig, the video is on BBC Poorly repaired car on youtube. The “B” post’s high strength steel was welded using MAG welding and poor spot welding technology, therefore on impact this steel no longer elongates but becomes like ceramic and breaks. This then changes the scene of the accident from a minor injury to a possible fatality. No technician wants to perform a bad repair but without the knowledge of how the vehicle should be repaired how can they perform structural panel replacement correctly. The answer is to have a repair method either from a manufacturer or from a data source such as Thatcham

There is a high risk to the “Accident Repair Industry” if they do not head this risk they potentially could have badly repaired vehicles on our roads, for example some bodyshops have not invested in “Inverta Spot Welders” that are designed to weld these complex steels instead they revert to traditional MAG plug welding. The vehicle below was welded using this method, you can judge

for yourselves the result. Riverpark Training are committed to helping any bodyshop understand the repair methods now needed to repair modern vehicles and will supply this advice F.O.C to any repairer who has doubts on repairing vehicles or specific vehicles, we will even hire out the welding or riveting equipment to you to ensure you repair the vehicle correctly.

Jonathan Murphy, Managing Director at David Murphy Towing Name and Job Title Jonathan Murphy, Managing Director at David Murphy Towing Tell us about your career so far? I joined the family business, owned by my mother Muriel and father David in 2005 after reading Physics at Strathclyde University. I am committed to developing the business to continue to provide service excellence to our clients and as a great place to work for our staff into the next generation. Did you plan to get involved in this industry? After my dream job of being a fast jet pilot for the RAF, joining the family business was a natural step for me after university and David Murphy Towing has recently 46- GARAGETRADER

celebrated its 50th anniversary. I’m proud that I’ve seen the business through the recession and since I became a director we’ve experienced an increase in turnover and profit consistently. What was your biggest disappointment? Not becoming a fast jet pilot for the RAF! What was the best piece of advice you ever received? I’m inspired by the advice of our very own CS Lewis – integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Whom do you most admire? My wife Nuala. She is CEO

and founder of new technology company Moment Health. Dedicated to making Maternal Mental Health mainstream through early intervention for new and expectant parents. She is also very committed to empowering and supporting women to achieve their ambitions through the Belfast chapter of the global non-profit LeanIn.org What is the most difficult aspect of your job?

communication skills to effectively exceed our customers’ expectations You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? I’d love to rush out and buy an Aston Martin DB11 but it doesn’t tow so I’d treat myself to the first towing car in the Maserati range – the Levante SUV. How do you relax?

Having only 7 hours in the day to provide our customers with an excellent service.

It’s a cliché but when I’m not at work I find spending quality time with my wife and our two sons is the most enjoyable way for me to unwind.
