Literarti v2.0: A New Journal of St George’s Creativity

AN ACT THAT PRODUCES EFFECTIVE SURPRISE (Jerome Bruner) Surprise is not easily defined. It is the unexpected that strikes one with wonder or astonishment. What is curious about effective surprise is that it need not be rare or infrequent or bizarre and is often none of these things. Effective surprises ‌ seem rather to have the quality of obviousness about them when they occur

Principal outcome: A physical journal - in conjunction with Drago Labs. High production values – hardback. Special edition versions (boxed with original artwork by ex-students etc – auctioned for ZOA)

Who else will be involved? A Literarti 2.0 committee or working group – ideally a teacher from every department Special events within subject areas might be encouraged to generate suitable content (photo competitions, creative writing and so on) However, the project should primarily encourage and record teaching for creativity and creative thinking within existing projects – rather than being an additional task Student Literarti Group – involved in some aspects of the final design & layout Beyond teaching and learning: creative action across the whole community – Parents, ex students, peripatetic staff, support staff, admin, co and cross curricular I have worked with several generations of our Alumni artists and designers on previous projects such as ‘Gallery Dreaming’ at the MAXXI. This project would help to bring their work and the SGBIS lifelong creative mind-set to the attention of current students. Other staff may gather contributions from alumni working or studying in their own fields.

Foci/purpose: Partially a celebration/record/audit of interesting work Partially a vehicle or approach to focus thought and action Encouraging students, teachers and the wider school community to recognise, explore and document diverse forms of creativity. Celebrating curiosity, divergence, critical thinking, original processes and outcomes in a full range of fields.

Promoting an Artist-Teacher approach – regardless of discipline teachers drawing upon the creative approaches of their own current or future specialisms
