World Food Day 2015
SGBIS Art & DT: World Food Day Poster Project 2015 Description of the project:
World Food Day takes place on October the 16th. You will investigate the ideas behind the World Food Day theme and then carefully produce a poster to support and communicate this theme and the work of The United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) All of your posters are eligible for online entry in the 2015 World Food Day Poster Competition
Product/outcomes This project will be developed in either your Art or DT lessons for around 3 school weeks. You may focus on graphics and lettering in DT and imagery in Art, although both areas might mix and can overlap. Use this link to see the constantly growing gallery of entries to the competition by students from different age ranges from all over the world. You will produce several ideas for different compositions, images and lettering in your Art and Design Technology sketch books and folders. The final poster can be produced in any combination of materials (paint, collage, photography, digital media, markers etc). There is no size limit. However, in school we shall be working on A3 paper format.
Investigation & Preparation The 2015 World Food Day theme is “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle Of Rural Poverty” Social Protection has been chosen as the theme of this year’s World Food Day (WFD) to highlight its importance in reducing rural poverty and granting access to food or means to buy food. Social protection can be defined as a range of solutions, often combined with each other’s, —such as work opportunities, provision of food, money and services— that are designed to support the vulnerable and help the poor in society move out of hunger and poverty. To help you get acquainted with the 2015 theme, we have prepared two short briefs that you can read for background information, ideas and suggestions. You will review and compare the work of a number of other artists in order to help make sure that your own original poster is as effective as possible. Investigation extension task Produce an extended research scrap book/journal that contains phrases, poetry, photographs, sketches, paintings, found items, song lyrics, etc. relating to the WFD theme
Design Criteria for the poster:
“Social Protection and agriculture: breaking the cycle of rural poverty” o is the theme for this year’s poster and this can be clearly visible and readable on your poster in any language (however you may decide not to include text) o No other text should be included. o Imagery should reflect the theme of the title with the emphasis being on people working together for a better future. o Your poster should be presented carefully and to the very best of your ability. Best results will be achieved after you have researched and selected imagery and fonts to help you to produce a well-planned, creative response to the task. o The size of the poster should be no bigger than A3 o Your design should not be offensive to others. o Your poster must be finished by Monday September 28th
SGBIS Art & DT: World Food Day Poster Project 2015 Preparing for your own design, including image and font/text gathering Using imagery provided in class you will produce a variety of thumbnail sketches as initial ideas for your posters. You will then evaluate your ideas and decide which ones are the best to develop and improve before planning your final posters. A research task to find lettering/font styles and images to help you to develop your poster will be set as homework – it is really important that you complete this research carefully as you will need to use your findings to help you get the best results you can in the next lesson.
Techniques, Skills & Knowledge Creative divergent thinking (having lots of ideas – even crazy ones!) After an initial introduction to the topic in class you will work in small groups to quickly produce mind maps of ideas that you might want to consider when designing your poster. Further poster and image examples will be shown in class to inspire you. Creative Critical Collaboration: Sharing ideas, comments and helpful suggestions with your peers. This means that your own work and that of others can achieve the best possible result.
Extension Task: Testing your ideas: Create a survey/questionnaire about your poster designs and those of some of your friends and present your main findings graphically using ICT. You might use Survey Monkey to do this.
Use of a range of media: You can use a variety of media and techniques to produce your poster including, digital (computers), drawing, paint, collage, stencil, sponging, photo montage, etc. Be experimental! Working to a specific project brief in a short time frame Some Art and DT projects start with more personal, open and individual themes. However, this project is more like those given to a professional artist or designer. Digital Poster extension task: Use computer aided design software such as Photoshop, Corel Draw or Pixlr (online and free) to create a digital poster design for the project. You might also photograph or scan in parts or all of your painted, drawn or collaged work and use computer image manipulation to experiment with different colour combinations or composition
