Concept

Deliverables

The concept for the publishing house was to focus on the design of limited edition zines and books. These would be primarily self-published by myself but it could evolve into the publishing of others.

- Logomark - Identity - Website w/ E-Commerce - Journal Press - Volume One - Journal Press - Volume Two

The concept for the banding was to create a simple and versatile logomark that could be applied to a variety of mediums and at varying sizes, due to the nature of it being applied across print books and web.

Research

Research & Context

During the research for this brief i looked into small zine publishers and independent publishers to see how they worked and how they outputted their content. I found that most sold their publications in small numbers from their own website, and others would accept submissions and acted as publishers and a distribution network.

OUGD603

From looking at the layout and format for existing zines there seems to be a successful formula, keep the format fairly small and just one or two printing colours, so this is something i will keep in mind when i am designing and developing this brief.

Development

Development

The development of the branding was one of the primary tasks within this brief, i wanted to logomark to resemble a publications/paper/zines through a minimalist approach and then i wanted the typeface used to have a not too polished feel and slightly DIY feel to it due to the heritage of zines being quite a DIY thing to do.

OUGD603

This is where the use of the mono typeface came into the logo it gives the correct amount for do-it-yourself feel because of it being a mono typeface resembling typewriter style lettering, but also has enough polish for it to be used within a culturally relevant and progressive brand.

Logomark

Outcomes

This is the final logomark and i think it works really well giving the right sort of aesthetic and feel to the brand. It is culturally relevant but also has nods to the do-it-yourself heritage of zine and self publishing culture.

OUGD603

The use of the logomark and type works well and for smaller application such as the inside page of a zine the type part of the logo can be omitted to provide a cleaner use of the brand mark.

Journal Press - Volume One: Escape

Concept

Photography

The concept for volume one was to be an investigation into the idea of escaping, journeys, through myself discovering a new journey. This would give an investigation into the people and their surroundings and produce images that would try to provoke thought about the journey of the people in them.

All the images where shot on the Liverpool Underground between Liverpool Lime Street Station and Moorfields Station, this was a new journey for me so i was as much a part of the project/concept as the people in the photographs. I feel that the photographs produced are good and they achieve the concept and some of them are quite thought provoking. It was also really good to get back to doing some photography again.

Journal Press - Volume One: Escape

Outcomes

The images above show the final outcome for the Escape zine, the format was kept to A5, saddle-stitched zine and they are printed in black and white, for a couple of reasons one being that i like to shoot black and white photography and also because it keeps the production costs of the zine down, but it doesn’t sacrifice any quality.

OUGD603

I am really happy with the outcome, i think the zine fulfills the concept really well and the arrangement of the imagery in the layout carry a narrative throughout the zine.

Journal Press - Volume Two: Beacons 2013

Concept

Photography

The concept behind volume two was two-fold, i wanted to create a zine that showed the adventure, enjoyment and portray a section of popular youth culture that is the music festival. But i also wanted something to remember a period in time that was spent with friends.

All the photography for this zine was shot over three days at the Beacons Festival in Skipton, Yorkshire. The photographs were captured using a 35mm SLR with black and white film. I am again happy with the outcome of these photographs, i think they capture what i wanted to achieve and they also show what was a fantastic and enjoyable weekend.

Journal Press - Volume Two: Beacons 2013

Outcomes

Again the format of the zine was kept to an A5, saddle stitched zine and again printed in black and white as this made sense due to the use of black and white film within the camera.

OUGD603

I think the zine really achieves the outcome and communicates the good times had at Beacons, and also portrays a realistic view of the popular music festival. As with Volume One the chance to be doing some photography again was very much welcome by myself on this brief.

Website w/ E-Commerce

Outcomes

The website is designed as a one page scrolling site, this provides ease of use to the user and a pleasant browsing experience. The site is just for a temporary basis until i have fully finalised how i want this to appear, this is an ongoing part of this brief.

OUGD603

The website uses paypal functionality so that for the time being the site can function as a shop as well without it being hosted on a dedicated shopping platform.
